Thanks, I hadn't gotten that far. It might be more effective for me to try and use a matrix instead of $200 in neopixels

flexible matrixes are not very cheap either unfortunately...

you could reduce the number of leds by creating a smaller display area, like for only the front of the hat, instead of wrapping the whole thing in the strip

Alternatively you could also reduce the neopixel density and use 30/m reels, and adjust the spacing between rows.
