It could be trying to put 5A through a single 2-pin connector is ridiculous and I should up the voltage supply instead

There are connectors like xt30 and xt60 for delivering power to boards. Xt30 specs suggest up to 15A. They come in pcb mounts for the side of a board with bracing legs.
