There are dire warnings in the learn guide on the matrix portal about connecting external power to the spade terminals. To isolate the usbCI either have to cut two traces on the Portal board and run a jumper from the spade terminal to the regulator, or cut the 5 volt wires in the usbC cable. I wish Adafruit had added an option jumper to power the Portal from the LED matrix instead of the other way around. I think I will just back feed the spade terminal and hope I remember to never plug in the USB at same time as the LED power. Maybe put a fuse in that wire.

I do think it's better to be able to plug in USB and run the LED matrix at the same time, for development/ debug/ upgrade purposes. Being able to try things in the REPL on the fly is such a powerful advantage of using Python. (And otherwise if you do forget and plug in your computer to the USB port, my understanding is that you're risking your computer.)
