#What trips Halfkay mode in Circuitpython8.0 on Teensy 4.0

Hi,
I'm trying to build a dev environment for an LED project using external USB power on Teensy 4.0 (pads cut). However, it seems to keep dropping to Halfkay boot mode, which kills my Teensy until I hit the reset button in the Teensy loader.
Any thoughts on what might trigger this? - It seems to happen with external battery rather than external PSU, and when I try to use an isolator.
Thoughts welcome.
