13 years ago, on September 5th, 2004, I published the first post on a new site called Hackaday.com (RADIOSHACK PHONE DIALER – RED BOX). I wanted to create a cool place online and beyond for hackers…

#

ok @austere temple done

happy 13th, hackaday! 🎉

Interesting.

we also talked about hack-a-day vs hackaday

but hackaday is what i thought was easier to remember at the time

It's cool that its still going, is there many websites that are still relevant 13 years later!?

My video that has the most views is the only one that was featured on a hackaday article

#

how long did you work on it @neat pebble ?

neat solar
#

Do you see many cultural differences between HackADay and Adafruit communities?

Id like to see your answer for the questions

#

@neat pebble Can we get a copy of that 10 year plan? It sounds pretty impressive that the thing you started made it through so much.

timber storm
#

@neat pebble what inspirations did you have when you designed the logo? was there different versions?

rancid depot
#

@neat solar the Adafruit community is a little more supportive and welcoming. Hackaday has a pretty critical crowd, but offers very complex projects. Adafruit is a good starter-to-intermediate community, whereas Hackaday leans more towards intermediate/advanced.

Hello!

delicate portal
#

@rancid depot @neat solar Looks like I wasn't the only one. I expressed the same sentiment just a few days ago.

neat solar
#

I have to say I am very comfortable in the Adafruit community. I learn new things every day!

delicate portal
#

Same here.

neat solar
#

Yeah, the community is fantastic and helpful. And I still can't get over how much energy Phil and LadyAda put into community relations. It's a brilliant marketing move.

#

(not that that was their motivation)

rancid depot
#

@delicate portal I have adjusted to it, but perhaps it's a call for some of us to provide more encouragement and help tilt the scales a little. Hackaday is also much closer to criticism of other social networks, like Reddit, which can be brutal if an idea isn't taken well. Both Hackaday and Reddit are huge sources of traffic, and I know the stuff I've posted on both has gotten silly criticism, but also valuable feedback.

neat pebble
#

these are all great questions, i'm gonna do them here and maybe on a show, keep them coming!

woven shoal
#

But of a time warped response re: community style

#

The problem I have with the Reddit and to some extent Hackaday style is the hostility is, intended or not, a selection mechanism.

#

If you want to be inclusive and promote equality, you have to have a style that is compatible with that

#

Not one that completely favors aggressive behavior etc

terse kindle
#

It's all about community building. How the top people handle things determines that. And not handling it is handling it in a certain way.

keen shard
#

Maybe a little off topic, but what sub reddit's to you see hostility on? I find r/arduino and r/raspberrypi pretty decent

deep granite
#

All of them if you post the 'wrong thing'

#

One issue I have with reddit is misinterpretation and then the lynch mob that occurs, if you don't come across in a neutral unbiased manner, or agree with the collective you will be downvoted and shadow banned if you have an opposing opinion or experience.

woven shoal
#

I have a friend (female) who was pretty well blasted on the 3D printing reddit

#

Point being, she actually knows what she’s doing and produces innovative things

#

She isn’t a n00b

keen shard
#

I find the 3d printing one a little snobby OK

tranquil stream
#

@keen shard you can only take so many hows my benchy or heres a failed print picture, now you try figuring out why it failed. or I want the cheapest 3d printer, then a week later, why do my prints fail or look bad

keen shard
#

I guess if it was being used "right", benchys and other low quality posts etc would just be down voted

low heath
#

What is the definition, in your mind, of the word "Hack"???

#

Anyone...

#

Hackaday is a teenager. Perfect, that's when the mind is to be set FREE....

terse kindle
#

somebody give hackaday a ramones album

low heath
#

Hey, that reminds me. Ann and I are going to see Frankie Vali tonight.

#

Anyone remember The Four Seasons? I used to listen to them on 8-Track tape.

#

Sorry, I digress...

#

It's just that when my fingers get on a keyboard, they just can't stop hacking...

long tinsel
#

30 years ago it was cool to be called a hacker. Then in the 90's it was media associated as a deragatory tearm. Today it seems more and more going back to it original usage which I like. Someone who knows their stuff and can get things done 😃

low heath
#

@long tinsel Bingo! We need to change the stigmatism. I say we use the old reference of a "Safe Cracker", one who opens safes illegally, and say "Web Cracker", one who opens websites illegally. To hack is to persist at making the "non-working" into the "working". Wether it be hardware or software, we hacked at it. Think about that for a minute. We hacked "at" it. Not on it or through it or some other verbage. We hacked AT it until it worked. And worked for the good of all mankind. 😃

delicate portal
#

I think I read somewhere that you are only a hacker if someone else who is a hacker calls you one.

#

I thought that was a pretty cool idea

Who becomes the first hacker then?

The question that @outer moon asks,"What is the definition, in your mind, of the word "Hack"??? " strikes me as the question we need to answer most. In MY mind , "hack" is using a tool to whittle away, to hack is to get to the core of an issue. Be it code or an ice creme cone. So, a "Hacker" is someone trying to get to the core by whittling away the outsides. Make sense?

low heath
#

@rancid depot Yes, makes perfect sense. As I said upstairs, we "hacked" at the code and boards until we got to the core of the matter so things would work.

meager zealot
#

According to Webster, "hack" means "to cut with repeated irregular blows" , which is a fair description of some of mine.

shrewd marten
#

Anyone that studied Computer Science in the 80's knows exactly what "hack/hacker" means.

#

But it's definitely morphed since then.

#

It started out as a somewhat mildly pejorative term. Something done in a way that didn't follow best practices, but ended-up being functional "enough". If the solution was at least marginally unique or creative, it might be a "clever hack". But the majority of hacks don't go into serious use unless you're desperate, knowing full well that it really needs to be replaced/cleaned-up in the future.

#

"Hackers" didn't write the most elegant code, but got most of it working well enough to be useful. They author the one that really should be thrown away.

rancid depot
#

YAY

stable fjord
#

“Hacker” started out at MIT in the 60s IIRC. See the book “Hackers” by Steven Levy, and the “jargon File”/“Hacker’s Dictionary”. It was far from a pejorative term in the beginning.

rancid depot
#

There is a much more nuanced vocabulary available to the public with regard to ad hoc solutions to technical problems.

#

This was a news cycle that ended a long while back. 😉 It made people some money, to get them discussing this term.
