Eeeep I am cranking out projects and spreadsheets and emails like a crazy person... one more week until Seattle Mini Maker Faire! Gonna be fun though ๐
need any help at your booth @tulip bear ?
I think you and @wise fog 's presentations are on sunday so I'm planning on being there then mostly
yes our presentations are one after another
๐
Yes, we can use help on Sunday! Anytime you want to come by is good for us! I'll be heading to prep for my presentation at 1:30 I think
and then I want to watch Tony's presentation
I have another friend coming to cover during that time
any advice for a first time booth at seattle mini maker faire?
have fun and don't forget to take breaks
is your booth outside? we had it rain the night before so keep everything off the ground
our booth is inside in Sky Church
we asked for inside because we're mostly making blinky LED things lol
breaks! yes... i'm not very good at taking breaks hehe
nice! that'll be nice
I'm sure it'll be awesome @tulip bear
Say, I'm looking for a ride over to the Maker Faire on Saturday. If anyone can give me a lift from Redmond I'd really appreciate it!
Hey @gleaming umbra - do you work at Microsoft?
Indeed I do, @viral zealot
@gleaming umbra - yah know, we don't really have a maker space on the East side...any change Microsoft wants to lead the community and opening theirs up to locals?
@gleaming umbra but what would be even better...i have to pause a minute because this totally excites me ... Home Depot partners with Adafruit where DIY meets DIY...at least before Amazon buys Home Depot ๐
LOL re: Home Depot
@viral zealot I don't speak for Microsoft on this one, but since Microsoft provides the materials and equipment (and liability insurance) for the Maker Garage, I can't see them opening it up to the public. Also, it's in controlled work space so you have to have a badge to get into the building, and then you have to badge in again to get into the Maker Garage.
Now, I will suggest to them that we (Microsoft) partner with local organizations to sponsor a public-access maker space on the east side. That would be a fabulous marketing opportunity since we could plaster advertising all over it. (Just trying to think of the business case). It would also create additional community good-will.
The Shops of Redmond would be too high-rent, I think, but I'm sure there's some industrial space along 520 that we could rent.
And there would be plenty of volunteers to staff the maker space.
PT (Mr. @tidal fiber ) has a guide on "how to build a maker space" from a business, legal, and insurance perspective. I'll go read through it and see what it would take. Then I'll talk to some people here and see how we can move this forward, approvals, reviews, business cases, etc.
This issue has come up before - the general community grumbling about Microsoft's full-time-employee-only maker space....
That said, I'm not sure the Microsoft leaders are aware. I'll see if I can rectify that.
@gleaming umbra Thank you! What would be AMAZING if...what if the youngsters on the Eastside (and Seattle) through the maker space got internships at Microsoft when they got older...then full time jobs....WHOA - employees at Microsoft who actually went to school in the area! Oooh....a company town....now we ALL can afford rent :-). You know who has space? Home Depot. What if their Halloween department became the Microsoft/Home Depot/Adafruit DIY space? Big Eyes....blinking pumpkins....I mean...sad really the Halloween display at Home Depot...and we all go there anyways....
@gleaming umbra there are two awesome Home Depots that I shop at (Bellevue and Redmond)...well look at that...both where Microsoft has extensive office space (of course, Google is right down the street from me...no wonder my daughter can't afford to live here).
It would be interesting to collaborate with Google, Amazon, and SpaceX/Tesla on that project, as well as Home Depot....
@gleaming umbra you know how we are all on this "buy local" trend? Oohhh how cool - "hire local" (I mean for the jobs that get respect - engineering, project manager...)
It would be a fabulous STEM (or STEAM) outreach.
Yah - @gleaming umbra We have AMAZING talent. And guess what? They go to our local schools too.
We do use the intern program as a hiring vector.... Getting local interns would be cool (speaking as myself here). I'll look into pursuing this.
@gleaming umbra The other thing I LOVE about Home Depot is - while I could be a light switch for example on Amazon.com - I can go into my Home Depot and talk with Bruce and Ken and they'll explain all about electricity...These guys have a SIGNIFICANT background in electricity. Ken ran some company with like 100 employees. Can you imagine a Ken partnered with you partnered with us?
Home Depot might have insurance issues, but I can ask their HQ legal team. Or better, their HQ marketing team. Best to not ask lawyers if at all possible. (Nothing against lawyers, but once they give you an answer you have to live with it.)
I do like this idea.
@gleaming umbra Lawyers are necessary but my challenge with them is 1) billable hours. Closing on something is not in the interest of them making money. 2) risk adverse 3) not subject matter experts.
Right on the money.
@gleaming umbra I have found what works best is to get to the point where you write up a LOI...which is way after all the partners have opened the wine and passed the cheese.
They also tend to be extremely bivalent. Things are always yes/no with them. Very little room to maneuver.
I'll also talk to Phil T. and see what the official Adafruit stance would be.
@gleaming umbra my experience has been more like with a psychologist. Not taking a side because that would be a liability.
(Oh, I'm Phil M., so we (Adafruit) have at least three Phils - T, B, and M.)
@gleaming umbra with that said, a GOOD LAWYER - like any domain expert - is a tad hard to find - but TOTALLY AWESOME.
Ahhh, my experience with lawyers has been adverse (divorce) or in terms of business risk (professional).
@gleaming umbra in my generation the name was Dave (notice how the name isn't something like - oh i dunno....Nancy ๐ ).
@gleaming umbra marriage is hard. I've been married for 32 years. My husband says 3 of them have been good ๐
Ouch.
@gleaming umbra with that said, we're all so sarcastic it's hard to know what is real versus imaginary.
[I have found a Discord bug. My Avatar shows me as "idle/away" even though I'm active in this channel.]
@viral zealot Sarcasm is a healthy sign of intelligence! ๐
And a good stress-reduction strategy.
@gleaming umbra you know what lowers stress? Figuring out how hw/firmware works. Now that is fun...just the other day a capacitor just blew up...scared the crap outa me.
@viral zealot Firmware is interesting to me. I know little to nothing about it, other than what it does. I need to research the security of system firmware, particularly that which controls servers in lights-out data centers.
Electrolytic?
@gleaming umbra what interests me is devices telling me who they are through the powerline so i can do targeted energy monitoring.... http://ubicomplab.cs.washington.edu/pdfs/electrisense.pdf
@gleaming umbra consumer level. I have this dream where my neighborhood plays this game where we compete who saves the most trees, uses the least amount of oil, uses the least amount of CO2. The winner feels superior.
@gleaming umbra both grid and consumer exist. One I just ordered for consumer is this one. https://sense.com/product.html
@gleaming umbra I mean change behavior through knowledge and competition....
@viral zealot Why is it important to signal through power lines instead of other communication channels?
... That Sense device looks interesting.
@gleaming umbra it doesn't matter. It's just I found this document and it seemed worth exploring. Personally, it seems a bit dangerous. I'm looking for a non-invasive easy to set up way. Sense seems to do this. I am not happy all is proprietary. I don't know but I am wondering if I can use CTs then get the EMI outa that to figure out the device signature. I think my problem is I don't have the background/not smart enough. I'll just keep bumbling and plodding and perhaps I'll get there.
[Re: grid monitoring. I am a complex adaptive systems researcher and have done work with Paul Hines at University of Vermont and MITRE to study the behavior of power grids. Thus, I'm sorta familiar with the monitoring capabilities. The details are classified, unfortunately.]
@gleaming umbra whoa. Congratulations. I can't even do adaptive systems let along complex ones. Awesome background.
@viral zealot Do a search for "Santa Fe Institute" if you're curious. I was a visiting researcher there annually for eight years.
@gleaming umbra Santa Fe? Are you KIDDING ME? What a beautiful place. So artsy. I am off to search.
@viral zealot You might also look into "TSCM" since there is a technical surveillance method that puts the listening device in the wall outlet, which then is powered by the mains. It modulates signal on the mains, and the demodulation device sits just inboard of the building transformer. It allows surveillance of rooms without using RF.
@gleaming umbra re: TSCM thank you.
You're welcome. Just a tidbit from a past life. ๐
@viral zealot I'm thinking more about the maker space idea of yours. I would think we'd want different sections: wearables, electronics, 3D printing, PCB design and fabrication, laser cutter, OtherMill, and a machine shop. Thoughts?
Another possible partner: TAP Plastics....
@gleaming umbra all great ideas. I'd start however at the maker space scenario. For example, if it is Home Depot (my preference ), it would align to sections. They have the Halloween (seasonal) section, the plumbing/outdoor gardening section, etc. Then there would be projects for each section....building on the DIY projects they already do (e.g.: installing motion sensing switches, Nest devices...). So - imagine a section either within the store layout or within their DIY space where folks blink out their Halloween things, do costumes, etc. Then another space where gardeners do hydroponics as well as auto irrigation using the Feather m0 and moisture sensor, etc.
@gleaming umbra now PCB design is wonderful...and would fit in with the electronics section....there we could go from breadboard / wire prototyping to Kicad + Othermill.
@gleaming umbra and of course the lumber section could do with a CNC machine where we could make really cool enclosures and nifty stairs....
@gleaming umbra and of course, we'd all be plugging in some Microsoft/Google/Amazon/(name the partner) product so that we can do stuff like "Alexa - start the coffee machine..."
[Oooh that reminds me of an aquaponics project I wanted to do.]
@gleaming umbra i mean...the area we are in and the people here and the resources. Speaking of people, did you read the NYT article where they compared a janitor at Apple with one at Kodak? Same for Microsoft. But imagine if that janitor could get an internship at a maker space...now they can be looked at as potential employees instead of no different than any other physical asset.
I didn't see that article.
@gleaming umbra re: aquaponics...i've got circuits for pH and EC..
@gleaming umbra NYT article (was republished in this Sunday's Seattle Times): https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/03/upshot/to-understand-rising-inequality-consider-the-janitors-at-two-top-companies-then-and-now.html?mcubz=3
@gleaming umbra now tell the truth...do you know the name of the person who cleans your floors at Microsoft?
I do not. He's Russian, though, and I speak to him every time I see him. I should ask his name so I can address him properly.
@gleaming umbra Whoa - GOOD FOR YOU! Also, I wonder if he has kids that could benefit from a maker space. Does he want a better job (and all that American Dream stuff that we have all profited from)?
@gleaming umbra I actually am speaking for myself. For many years of my life I didn't seem to care that the other person deserves to be happy. Deserves to live their dreams. I gave it lip service. But it was more about me. So sad. Well, moving forward I just want to repeat and rinse and think about how that person has a family a name ...all that.
Same here. I smile and speak to everyone because that's how you have a warm and welcoming work environment, regardless of the task you're doing. I hate it when people treat service personnel like invisible furniture.
@gleaming umbra we all do better when we all do better.... https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/a-conversation-with-al-franken-on-trump-the-senate-and-his-dehumorizer-machine
Whoops! Time to get ready for work. I need to test the high power rocket flight controller in the elevators before I get started for the day. ๐ I think the building is tall enough to trip the altimeter parameters....
@gleaming umbra thank you very much for your time and conversation. Enjoy the day.
Thanks! You, too, @viral zealot !
@gleaming umbra find a ride? I was planning on going sunday but may be able to do saturday for part of the day
Not yet, @pliant narwhal. I could go Sunday instead. I'm flexible.
kk, if you don't find anyone else let me know. tony is coming from that side but I'm not sure what his plans are
Ok. I'll let you know. Thanks!
np
oh i'll probably be there all day sunday, talk is in the afternoon
i was thinking i might try to go to portland for their mini maker faire saturday
but yeah i can carpool someone over from east side if they want to be there all day sunday
I'd appreciate the ride Sunday, @wise fog ! I can always sit down if I need to. ๐
sounds good, yeah if you want to ping me maybe friday or saturday and we can figure out the logistics
@wise fog I'll send you e-mail Friday afternoon and we can solidify plans!
w00t!
I'm going Sunday if any needs a ride. I don't plan to be there all day though. Also - anyone on Eastside want to meet up say at Victor's Redmond (I'm thinking most folks are in Redmond?) either Friday/Saturday/Sunday morning (before you leave for maker-faire?)
You're up early, @viral zealot ... What's Victor's? (I just moved here)
He @gleaming umbra The early hours are the best (that and I go to sleep WAY early ๐ ). Victor's is a coffee shop in Redmond. I just picked it because it seemed close to you all. And I figured it meant we could meet in the morning ...
@viral zealot I'm going over on Sunday with Tony and meeting up with Scott. I can grab an Uber over to Victor's on Saturday if you want to meet up for coffee and a chat.
@viral zealot DM me the address and time, and I'll be there Saturday morning.
@viral zealot I think we should meet arouns @tulip bear and @wise fog 's talks
Learn about new maker hardware that's programmed with the Python programming language. Beginner and experienced makers alike can build fun projects with blinky lights, interactivity, and more using the simple and expressive power of Python code.
RIchard is also from Adafruit Show & Tell: https://seattle.makerfaire.com/maker/entry/194
Yay! So glad you guys are coming to the Faire ๐
I'll be there all weekend at my booth in Sky Church, running the fashion show on sat, and doing that presentation on sun (and then I will collapse into a puddle on Monday) Hope to see you!
@wise fog and I will be there all day Sunday if we want to have a meet-up someplace.
Awesome! Do you know where you will be?
I'll be there most of sunday as well
sophy and tony's talks are a good place to meet up
I'll be at both!
Just stupidly excited to be going to the Faire tomorrow! I can't wait to meet up with everyone. Many thanks to @wise fog who is giving me a ride....
I'm hoping to talk to folks today...I'll be at @tulip bear and @wise fog talks ...mostly afternoon... I wear a black t-shirt that says "BE KIND" (to remind myself ๐ ).
I'll be wearing a white circuit diagram T-shirt.
I've got a grey tshirt, red jacket and digikey bag. Should be there in an hour or two
Hey, @pliant narwhal , Tony and I are in the Armory working on electronics. We'll be back over in time for the talks starting at two!
At the Seattle Mini Maker Faire
TonyD at the Maker Faire
Chalk art (such amazing skills!)
I'll be there at the auditorium at 2 for @tulip bear then @wise fog after.
Cool! See you there!
Inbound on Future Train.
At @tulip bear's talk. Down at the bottom left.
@viral zealot did you make it to seattle mini maker faire?
That was awesome!!! I had a great day meeting old and new friends, and hanging out with other techies!
@pliant narwhal and @wise fog at the Maker Faire
@pliant narwhal sadly no. We spent the day finding (and we did find one!) an apartment for our daughter.
@viral zealot We looked for you! Wish you could have made it. It was a blast!
There were some awesome robots. There was an extremely realistic set of working Star Wars robots. R2-D2 was rolling around "talking" to people. There were also a set of robots that moved around and shot wiffle balls at people. Imagine a tennis-ball-thrower that instead shot 6-inch wiffle balls. People would try to catch them and throw them back in the bin. Massively entertaining. Tony got video that was better than mine.
There were also Daleks! (Though I didn't see them moving around trying to ex-ter-min-ate people.)
Also exciting, the King County Libraries are starting to build maker spaces in the libraries. They're starting with Bellevue and targeting January-ish for an opening. They had a table full of Lil' Bits to play with. Scott and I chatted with them for quite a while. It will be good to have more maker resources on the East side.
THANK YOU for the info on what went on. Go KCLS! That is great news about building a maker space. It makes sense to start in Bellevue. Bellevue is the largest of the KCLS libraries I have been in.
My favorite part was Scott and Tony handing out some CPXs to a few lucky and excited kids after Tony's talk (which was great!). ๐
oh the whiffle ball robots were amazing! so many great things at the faire this year, i was blown away, just like last year
and it was so awesome to meet you guys! ๐
@tulip bear SOPHY!!!! Gang, this is Sophy! She's AMAZING!!!! You should see the products she makes! They're absolutely production quality. The goggles she has with LEDs inside are absolutely commercial quality (rather, better than). And Sophy gave a wearables talk that got me excited about wearable opportunities.
@gleaming umbra omg thanks dude! it was super awesome to meet you in person! Thanks so much for coming to my talk and hanging out at my booth ๐ what a great weekend!
I missed the faire this year (I've attended in the past), but @pliant narwhal was kind enough to add me anyway. I was wondering if anyone here knows of a local source for thermoplastic sheets?
Worth giving them a call! Thanks. I ran across Calsak Plastics in Kent, but their hours are limited and location inconvenient. I left them a message and they never called back.
Yeah, website looks promising, and much better location.
TAP plastics has worbla (definitely regular, black, and they might have clear) TAP employees are very helpful and knowledgeable, I like the Lynwood one for parking, but the South Lake Union location is great too!
And they don't charge crazy rates to ship custom product (for those of us without cars) ๐
I was heading downtown anyway, so stopped by TAP and got some HIPS. Employees were very helpful. Thanks, guys! P-Body costume is a go...
woohoo! can't wait to see it ๐ @potent tartan
Hey all, those of you who have access to a 3D printer. The accessibility folks are looking for help printing devices for folks here in the Seattle area. Here is their email from them:
ALS Association Evergreen Chapter
Harborview Medical Center
Seattle Childrenโs Hospital
PROVAIL
These open-source devices offer a low-cost option for people with disabilities with limited income. We can provide the hardware required for some of the devices.
It would be fantastic if you could ask around and spread the word.
Thanks!```
3D printers printing 3D printers? My god. It has begun.
By when would these devices be needed?
@elder fractal Whenever you can print them I think. I can connect you directly with the person from maker making change to coordinate
Thanks. I am working on a couple of projects for kid's christmas, then I would love to send a few prints a month. this seems like a cool program.
@elder fractal email me and Iโll connect you. My email is scott@adafruit.com
Thanks I will. I am busy for a the next couple weeks, but will get at it when I can
sounds good @elder fractal
Any Seattle-ites planning to go this year? I'm going for at least one day, hoping to meet up with some friends.
I was planning to but haven't bought a ticket
I will be there. I think I am going Saturday
Iโm hoping to go one day since it takes only 45min to get there
I have tix for both days since I plan to hang out with friends a lot and may not get the full immersive experience with just one day. ๐ So I'll definitely be there Saturday, and may be there Sunday, too.
Early bird ticket prices were extended to this Friday so can can still get tickets for either or both days at a reduced price.
I may only go tomorrow. Its not very smokey today so I want to get outside
I will be there Sunday, donโt know exact time but I figure I will show up around lunch. For anyone there today, if there is something I shouldnโt miss seeing please share.
me too @glass temple . we rode bikes today instead
@glass temple @gleaming umbra leaving now. one stop on the way
@pliant narwhal @gleaming umbra on my way now. Wearing a bright green T-shirt.
I wish there were a reason to have new messages. But no seattle maker faire at this time
tear
Ok I just joined but is it a coincidence that a maker faire is in Seattle, where I live, or does discord have some geolocation powers to auto assign roles? :)
Most likely a coincidence, since it says Seattle for me too and I don't live there. ๐
I live in seattle too which is why this on here. I suggest: https://www.meetup.com/Seattle-Hardware-Happy-Hour-3H/ for local folks
!
I didn't realize we had a seattle thread
I think it used to be...
