Yeah, it’s a skewed concept
If you took it literally then of your parents said “go rob a store of all their meat” you’d then be obligated to rob that store
I've known people in their 20s who were more wise and mature than people in their 60s, so age and experience isn't everything
You can not and should never conflate honoring one’s parents with strict obedience. It simply is not in the meaning.
- I'm 43.
- I never "obeyed" my parents when I was young.
When my wife and I got married, I insisted that "obey" be omitted from the wedding vows.
wth, just looked up the traditional vow text
did you still vow to worship her?
"I'll worship you, but you still ain't getting my side of the bed"
Taking the opposite extreme and assuming that your parents ARE always right, you also miss the fundamental reasoning behind their commands if you depend only on strict obedience. You need to process and learn from those with more knowledge and experience, not just blindly go "monkey see, monkey do."
"Traditional" to whom? 😉
And, yes.. I do.. but that wasn't in the vows. 😄
Idk, searched the wikipedia article on wedding vows for "obey"
Heck.. I'd rather we hadn't gotten married in church.. but a Star Trek themed wedding was a longshot anyway. 😛
Lol
At least I got a Star Trek cake. 😄
People could just throw random crap in their wedding vows
Well... keep whatever meaningful, traditional vows you like.. but..
"I vow to love you, and also, every second Thursday of the month, I'll cook dinner"
"also, I'm not a good cook"
That's ok..
People are often shocked when they find out I'm not a good electrician.
I put that up on a poster in my bedroom when I first heard you say it
someone here could contact the governor of New York, I think he can do it.
But why?
Hahahahhaaa... No.
I was just thinking about what to cook this weekend.....
YouTube:
🧐
Star Trek weddings are a thing... Just need both parties to be super Trekky types
Indeed, but.... I'm not that much of a nerd anyway. 🤣
Yeah
We will do a vow renewal, so.. that could be something different.
Hehe, that's a good time to just have fun with it
I wonder what would happen if you put signs up that said "litter" and "don't litter" right next to each other -- would they cancel the effect of? Confuse people? Expose the robots that are hiding in plain sight but can't handle a paradoxical order?
pretty sure people would assume the first one was a "don't litter" sign that had been vandalized
Lol
I tend to ignore signs if they don't offer any new or useful information.
"Don't litter" beside a trash can is pointless to me.
I know what it's for.
In this example, it's rhetorical.
If there's a trash can, both are redundant.
If there's no trash can, both are redundant.
shrugs
Okay so here’s a question.. if you obey your parents/spouse absolutely… do you buy a Ouija board to communicate with them for what you’re supposed to do if they die?
Oof
Serious question though
Because there comes some point where they won’t be able to guide your life
I'd expect my parents to leave a will, with instruction.
The contract expires at death
lol
“There’s shares.. in a small tech company.. Google.. it won’t go anywhere just sell them..”
"'til death do us part"
Butchered reference to Superhero movie
Lol
That works for spouses but not parents I bet
Oh
Indeed
Oh no
I mean, unless you're really off the wall and marry your parents. 😛
O_O
Probs >~>
Ok folks, this has gotten beyond off topic, and is inching in on being inappropriate for this server. Please stop engaging in this conversation. Thank you.
I want these numbers to be lower
I wonder if you could mod a MagTag to be tri-color
I think it’s a different driver maybe different or more data lines used? Or it’s just SPI and you use a different library
Would be cool to try
Oh oh oh, I can just connect a tri-color display's ribbon like I did with the flexi-eInk!
If it's the same driver
I think it would be a different driver but possibly the same pin connection
Lemme see...
I can't find the controller on the MagTag
Actually, I think they're all the same controller and connector -- the guide for eInk is vague and works for both
Well, the controller is embedded in the e-ink itself
It’s not physically on the board
I would check the tricolor schematic to see if the pins and overall design is the same
I imagine both are from Good Displays which probably means they are at least similar
They should all be the same
Oh, what does the eInk friend do then? Just a breakout?
🤷♂️
It's all SPI communication
Oh yeah RAM buffer
Yeah, it is all SPI
Same pinouts for all of the ones sold by Adafruit, anyways
But voltages might be higher with tricolor vs monochrome
To the data sheets!
But I really feel like in general they should be the same
I just haven’t designed around more than monochrome
The eink friend handles tricolor displays, so I'd be surprised if MagTag didn't...
Worst that could happen is a temporary smoke machine
Or sparks
But probably a smoke machine
I'll put it on your tab
Nothing happened
Nothing?
Tri-color plugged into MagTag did nothing
Hmm. Did you look at the library for the tricolor e-ink to see if there is anything different in initialization
I literally just plugged it in and saw if it booted XD
I've seen the occasional person come in and use (at)everyone, which is strongly discouraged/not allowed. Is it not possible for admins to turn this off? I assume not. Seems like an odd choice
It is turned off. It still shows the message but it does not ping anyone.
Ahhh I must have been thinking of another discord
Probably 27MHz
For terminals like this am I supposed to get the cable under the clamping plate?
Oops wrong channel
Hopefully someone can help here lol
Lol
Yes, the little plate prevents the screwhead from grinding into the cable. Plus sometimes the round screw squeezes the cable out more than the flat plate
Thanks!
if you're looking for more counter space
just grab a few fermions
or more accurately, counter-space
revisiting a design i worked on during a few live streams
the RealTime Pi
CM4 carrier board with an RP2040
supposed to have USB type A adapter and ethernet
Is the CM4 that small?!
yeah, surprisingly
I thought it was closer to a Pi A+ size!
Dang
I don't have a quarter and a Zero to compare, but I think that's a tad taller than a Zero and like 2/3 as wide?
Smol, yet powerful
I have food allergies so I can't answer this myself. I want to get full size candy bars to give to the kids in my complex. If you were trick or treating what candy bar would you be super stoked to get?
Personally, Hershey bars are my absolute favorite. But I too have an allergy, so any of the popular peanut things are off my radar
I was considering snickers
I figure one nutty bar, one full chocolate and one pure sugar
I think they're popular, I never had an issue trading when I was younger
Lol I vividly recall trading my snickers to friends for the pure sugar candies
Lol. So yeah, Hershey bars, Snickers, and sugar-blasted sugar bars would probably make most happy
One of the nice things is you don't have to worry about pleasing everyone -- someone else will give something you don't, kids will trade, and all will probably be happy
I hope it isn't weird to give kids this much candy
Lol, no, you'll be super popular for giving out such a rare and generous treat
I saw some costumes in the making, real cute
Older trick-or-treaters and bigger costume parties seem to be coming into fashion... Halloween is becoming a cosplay holiday
thats not bad really. better than just gimme candies
Best to either give full size candy bars or big handfuls of the small things
prints revision 6 of watch case, crosses finger
Lol, I've made some major changes... now it's tweak time
I actually got a great idea from my mom, who is NOT technically or mechanically inclined -- I was trying to make a full wrap case, and she suggested just a top cover that straps it down to my wrist like the bandages do, lol
Getting the bottom, which is curved, to fit properly... that would have taken forever
I tried to organize it some XD
V4-V6 actually stemmed off of V2
If this isn't a winner, I think it's close at least...
That's not bad! The clouds are like, floofy 8-bit
Love the warm feeling from my ear buds after they've been charging with the case connected to power
Yeah, I wasn’t able to make it as truly cloud like as I wanted
Maybe I’ll make a version that is more cloud like
I wish I could afford a sitter to go see Eternals next week 😦
And also to see Spider-Man No Way Home
In December
I still don't feel safe with the idea of going to a theater
Yeah I'm at the waning edge of vaccine effectiveness but I think I can wiggle my way into a booster if I explain my work environment
Lots of ppl
I need to see if I need a booster
I think everyone does
I haven't read the article I saw past the headline but I think mix'n'match between brands is also allowed per the CDC
Obvy doesn't apply outside the US
I know it was being looked into at least
I got Pfizer for both shots, but I'll take whatever they'll give me
I got Pfizer in august
I think I was mid July? There were .5k-1k people in line it was awesome
modernia for me. while ago. if they recommand booster for me, ill take it
I had to get a covid test recently (turned out to be some other virus) and they promised it would be better than the one that samples your gray matter. It wasn't lol
I think it was July for me? I know it was mid July or earlier, 'cuz I was at a con in August and was fully vaxx'd before that
Julyish is when my county started allowing ppl in my age group
I just hope we don't need boosters every 3 months forever
I am worried about CV becoming endemic like the flu
It will be
If we get to July 2022 and it's still a problem I'm just going to another planet
We’ve sort of reached an ideological inflection point with Covid in which we won’t see enough people vaccinated to tamp it down below endemic levels
Yeah the reports of people deny covid as they are being put on a vent are wild
And it’s really sad that it’s just a political statement now to avoid the vaccine
Like.. it blows my brain to pieces
I know one guy for whom it isn't but he also day trades crypto so not the best decision making
Anyway, can anyone recommend any good dog treats? I need to shake things up
Not for me, for the dog
My dad likes Milkbones, he'd steal them from the dog
lol
There's a place in town that does handmade baked goods for dogs (I live in a very bourgeois area). For her 1st year home with me celebration she's getting some of those
I should make the bunnies a nice salad for Xmas.
Yum for buns!
Trying to find more of these 3.3V buck regulators in stock andddddd there is none except a few obscure sellers lol
Lead times of November next year
At least the linear regulator I use is available via LCSC.
Almooost...
Print time?
Lol googly eyes
last time I felt like this - hunting for goods all over the place hoping you might get lucky somewhere - was in Moscow in 1991
3D printers don't work right unless they have googly eyes on them
I feel it
Yeah
So far everything I've needed has been available but it could affect future projects
TreeHouse terminal will probably end up going to a LDO for the 3.3V supply if I can’t find my 3.3V dcdc regulator
Dang this is a nice 3.3V dcdc
I found this part with the Digi-Key mobile app. https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/XCL224A333D2-G/893-1419-1-ND/8256121
Integrated inductor and whatnot
Just needs two caps
And 11k in stock
Ugh, might need to respin my treehouse terminal with this and just try and get a bunch of these DCDC converters
Can anyone recommend a WWI podcast? I've listened to Dan Carlin's too many times now lol
I can recommend tech news podcasts
when i used to get spam emails, what i did was tell them I have successfully contacted their lawyer. then couple days later, tell them that i got bonus of getting 10x the amount they told me id get
lol
pretty often they get angry and demend their share. thats when i told them that I was very generous and sent 20% to lawyer to split between them
Lol
Lol
all emails after that I said look, I already got my money, you already your yours via layer, dont contact me again
Heheheh
I hope that frustrated at least a few. There's a great video out there of a guy leading on one of those fake Microsoft scammers for a long time. At the end he asks "should the computer be turned on?" And I think he got hung up on lol
lol
one time I was curious so each time I said how much money it'd be, i doubled money amount
guy never complained that I doubled money each time lol
You put all the winnings into dogecoin, clearly
lol
anyway yet other time I randomized number each time. i'd think that would make guy correct me. nope
Lol you have a lot of patience
Me: “I’m tired of waiting for the ESP32-s2 feather from Adafruit”
Also me: designs one with the ESP32-s2 mini module
Adafruit: “we did it! :D”
lol
Best not to reply to scammers... but if James Veitch did the smart thing, we wouldn't have this gem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usiyADqD7XQ
Looks like it's going into the shadow dimension
Maybe it is
lol
Need to order my PCB and parts to test
No way I can beat Adafruit to market though
SUCCESS! Now to print a nicer version, file, and make a proper strap
nice
Why not make a leather band? 🙂
And expensive
And that
You need like 100 dollars in tooling to get started
I do have tools for leatherwork...
Plus the leather
Might do paracord
Paracord is cool
Need a not hard plastic strap...
You could braid the paracord
I mean latch
Those plastic clasps a lot of cheaper watches have would irritate my wrist
Could do a button
Oh sorry I meant that as an addendum to the comment before
Hmm... button....
Simple, elegant, easy to integrate
Hmmmmm.... But is it secure?
very nice, i made a display for itsybitsy 2 years ago but havent tried to make it... idk why but i really enjoyed designing it and still havent tried designing anything since
https://github.com/hexthat/Bitsy-Display-Add-On
@tardy badger do you buy and solder everything yourself or send off to one them PCB fabs?
Yeah, I buy parts in bulk, use a stencil, and cook on a hot plate
Very cool, that sounds like a fun project
I’m pretty efficient for my overall process
What hotplate?
on nice, that seems like easier for bulk
A cheap Chinese one off of Amazon
Despite Limor and/or PT telling me it's too complicated for DIY, I want to build a picky-place machine
Notice the mini panels lol.. more Bread 2040 that need to be made
Well, there are diy pick n place machines
Could you possibly point me to the hotplate? I need one for far lower duty cycle than you're using and I may as well get a good one
Maybe they meant for Adafruit scale...
Oh I see
Nooo
Skerrs scale
I'm lower scale than that but I might as well buy optimistically
Lol
yeah would suck to have to buy and upgrade later on?
I was talking about picky-place machines XD
Oops

Wow, that's a lot of watts
The temp is off by ~10°C but some have reported it being off by as much as 40°C
can you mod a 3dprinter some how, seems like alot of coding for pick and place
You should be able to tune it though
That's what a few folks seem to have done
And then there's this! https://hackaday.com/2020/05/11/open-source-pick-and-place-has-a-450-bom-cost/
how many hours to get it working though?
35 youtube videos of it on his channel....
I'd guess that involves development time
Thanks buddy
WTF HAHAHAHA HOW IS THIS SHIPPABLE? WHAT IS THIS?! https://t.co/epse3Cv3xF

i'm teeling you with the garbage design idea's they have.. makes me believe the average IQ is 60 everywhere
Sales monkey "hey jim we need a bad design idea"
jim: "hold my beer"
no hope for these developers as they make everything worse over time, and i think it's all in the ego and "yep our customers are dumb and we love e'm"
They know what they are selling is garbage.
I mean, it's not all garbage. But that was a very "whhhhyyyy" moment for me
I just want my phones to be Nexus 6P form factor and my laptops to be the same general thing laptops have been for decades...
No notches, no rounded screen corners or curved edges, no pinholes, just flat rectangle screens, on all devices
i think is garbage as you paid for hole in your screen
aesthetics is nice for a monkey that wears a ring.
I meant their products aren't all garbage. iPad Pro and iPad Mini 6 are magic
I do think notches are a garbage concept
i agree
next they will make circular screens
"some guy reading this from apple" i should have thought of that!
I do remember a phone with a smaller secondary display above the main one, but that was independent of the Android display -- it didn't mess with the original experience, and added something
Circle displays are for watches
thats fine at the end of the day think about how many applications written for that OS will never expect a gaping hole in the centre of the display
It’s just a UI problem with the notch, easily fixible
no one is going to rewrite their video game just to compensate for a design oversight
You’re acting like it’s so hard to fix that
Apple will probably patch it, but I still think it's a worse experience for no real benefit
day one me at apple at design meeting.
here is a sword harakiri pls
I give it a few days or a week or so before they fix it
It’s a neutral experience because not everyone will be bothered by the design choices
Or the UI issues
Which are fixible
And the notch? Also not a big deal. It’s a better use of space than a chonky bezel
They didn't have chonky bezels before...
just to be a iritation.. i'm putting all my status information in that spot right ther
Well, regardless there is more usable space in a smaller overall format
It’s a suboptimal UI experience at the expense of space optimization
But it still really isn’t that big of a deal
aesthetics destroy function
I don't think it's worth it, but I'm not buying one, so I don't care that much
Sure, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it
pats 2018 MacBook Pro
It’s not for everyone.
I for instance like the 13” MBP
I wouldn’t be mad if someone game me the new 14” one
It just sucks for those who need that class device and the bigger screen, but don't want a notch
Because my computer is coming up on 4 years
Give it a week for someone to create an app that moves the status bar down a notch
😉
Pixel 6 Pro should be arriving tomorrow. 😁
Anyway, more than likely if you’re using it you’ll get used to it
Yeah... But I still won't like it. Stares at rounded corners of Pixel 2 XL with disdain, 4 years later
You’ll honestly find that most design choices we don’t like, we simply omit that it’s there
Doesn’t save our disdain
Rounded corners is a good example
Feels like a suboptimal use of space in the corners but in reality I rarely touch the corners
I still hate it. I can live with it because it doesn't actually impact functionality like notches
Yarp
Notches don’t really affect functionality. The screen still works.
It affects the aesthetics
Huge difference
Or affects the experience
But just you wait, everyone will go to notched laptop displays
Just like everyone did the camera in screen/notch stuff lol
When sony gave me a inferior experience, i told them.
When samsung gave me a inferior experience, i told them.
When LG gave me a inferior experience, i told them.
people choose looks over function.
and i hate it
And then there is no running away lol
I’m not understanding how a notch gives an inferior experience?
O_o
Other than UI adjustments, it’s just the top of the screen. People rarely use the top of their screens.
A notch removes useful screen space.
you paid for someone to take a bite out of your screen
^
Okay… bad visuals and not a great argument
If you covered the notch, you would simply have the screen you had before. Notches simply allow more usable space and less dead space.
It’s not an insane or ill purposed design choice
Maybe not as optimal because it takes more effort to design around.
A nicely seasoned pan to cook it in does also make a world of difference in flavor too. Nicely done
I'm somewhat lacking in cast iron pans, but.. this will do.
did you know apple offered rossman 10mil $ to remove his youtube content?
Sure, and Google just suppresses bad press in search results
I’m cynical of most tech companies
facebook and google were outed for supressing any 3rd party advertizing
Apple seems more the type to murder you with lawyers than to give you a bunch of money to go away
I use primarily apple products but I am very critical of overall apple experiences with products and the “Gucci push” in pricing new products
@delicate stream to be honest they are in trouble
But all companies seem to be doing the “Gucci push” with driving phone costs into the 1000’s of dollars :/
and i hope this changes the for the better good
Apple might be obstinate now, but they'll pivot before they die
but as i said old habits die hard and time makes fools of us all
I don't think they'll come as close as they did before Jobs came back in 97
I like Tim Cook as a person, not so much the CEO of apple
I think apple has horribly drifted from where Jobs had the company in 2011..
Sure Apple Silicon is great, but it feels like for as large and moving as apple is, that should have come years ago
I think it's a huge improvement since Jobs went away..
200% less human sacrifice on a daily basis..
😋
Sure, it’s a more human environment there
While that is a joke, you’re actually right
But leaking is so bad, that someone leaked the memo about needing to stop leaking products
I think it’s a contractor overseas who is getting paid big bucks to “accidentally” send large tech firm details of products to the press or experts
Oh, man... That was good steak.
I had a coffee cake and coffee... Still on the first cup
Lol coffee cake
Delicious
I love a good coffee cake
Mmmm
Uhh, why did that get censored? DX
If so, are you upgrading to the more premium version of Nintendo switch online with the DLC stuff
I have a Switch, I don't have Online
And I don't download games I can get in a physical format... And I only have like 3 games
And I haven't played it in like 6 months again
Lol
i do have downloaded games bu only free or cheap
im not paying $50 for downloaded ever
I was up briefly at 6am.. rolled a small J and poured a little Chianti.. Finished that and went back to bed. 😛
My wife and I play animal crossing and they have a new DLC coming next week. Fun little game if you like doing real life stuff in a game where it’s more fun
First big paid DLC aside from the Sanrio amiibo cards
sadly you want the next AAA game... time to get robbed everywhere.
Cant just have propper game code.. you need a 3090.
Cant have a physical copy "not that it ever stopped piracy"
Can't have a complete game "were gona cut it up and make you keep paying"
I don't do downloads because I don't want to risk losing access to the games 10-20 years from now, and we know they'll probably shutter the service at some point -- they can't support devices forever, unless they figure out an easy way to make systems be able to do all the new things but also support legacy without extra work
animl crossing is still way too expensive
I mean... You really only need a 3090 if you're trying to play like, max all the things at 4K or higher. I don't think there are any games you CAN'T play at all with like, a 1060 right now
It's all about settings. I can tell you a 3090 doesn't get you so far when you're playing Minecraft at 4K with max everything and raytrace shaders, lol
Lol
i can beg to differ
modern warfare "needs a cpu running atleast sse2"
or some games needing DX12
it's a good example of how new standards create paywalls
DX12 was supported all the way back on Radeon HD 6770
10 series has DX12 support (shipped with it) and SSE2 is a CPU feature
Also SSE2 has been standard for 20 years
DX13 is another topic
i know it's still a fact that you are too lazy to code propperly so you deny a entire generation of cpu's
like win 11 is
Win 11 is just just stupidity under the guise of consumer safety
Forcing someone to have a TPM for an upgrade doesn’t make computers safer
And a handful of security researchers even showed that TPM2.0 modules or firmware rarely slowed down attacks where it supposedly was supposed to help
And it's ugly too
Mostly because hacking and malware grows at a much faster rate than hardware and Os software
I'm leaving Windows because of all the 11 crap
The fact that if your computer is stolen, a TPM2.0 module can be circumvented with hardware is another reason requiring it is just plain stupid
Wrong plain lol
Lol
The fact that I'm now very upset with Microsoft and not a huge fan of MacOS is driving me to be a Linux person
Windows 8, and then 8.1…. Such a huge mess
I use windows for work, I use MacOS and Linux otherwise
I stopped doing end-user support when 7 ended, so.. meh
Windows 10 was okay
I skipped 8 unphased. If they do come out with a Windows 12 and reverse the crap, or just reverse it in 11, I'll revisit my choice... But right now, 10 will likely be the last version of Windows I'll use (daily driver anyway)
It was a far cry from 7
I'll probably use Win10 as a secondary when I get Ryzen, but.. kinda need it for DX12.
I just dislike how difficult windows makes it to get Development environments going
The circus and maze of features you have to download and enable just to have a solid dev environment…
Makes me glad I don't do Dev. trollololol
With my MacBook Pro, I just had to install Xcode developer tools and I was off and running
Doing things in Linux, even easier
I'm hoping I get a push-up to 3rd line, DevOps.. but that won't require any coding skills on my part.
i have to agree developing on windows due to it's multitool like existence is not fun
I think 7 had DX12 support? But you should NOT use it for anything online
7 seconds to crack win 7
It will take you longer just to find it.
Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!
Windows 7 and earlier should only be used in offline environments... Too many unpatched security issues
Oh, yeah, I was half right -- 7 got DX12 support for some games
Yeah, it's way too niche
talking about win 7.
i had a key but now suddenly microsoft wont accept it
even tho it's on the laptops sticker
One thing I definitely prefer about 10 over 7 is the start menu -- I can make it soooo much cleaner in 10, feels like the 95/98/2000 days, but better
agreed
You can call Microsoft about your activation issues
tried i sent them a photo
they said the sticker was too warn and they cannot be sure it's legit
@delicate stream really appreciate it
thank you
i'm trying to keep my retro laptop going
and alot of software wont run on win 10
I've mostly had issue with pre-7 software on 10
Finalized my lighting interface
Now I just need to connect the Pico, power, NeoPixel connection, and program!
Nice!
I shall endeavor to make as many things in this style as possible to use up the half PermaProto boards I'm collecting, lol
I've got a pretty big collection of them myself nowadays 😂
They certainly pile up quick XD
I just finished building the controller for a motion-activated neopixel setup I'm putting under the handrail in my staircase. Had to chop up the protoboard a bit lol
Hopefully you'll find a use for the other half XD
For real 😂
I'm thinking of doing "throw-away" projects -- things of no practical value, because I can
I believe this was made by Nintendo
I love making little "toys" with no practical value lol. I bought one of those rotating siren LED lights and now I want to install it somewhere and build a way to trigger it remotely. I have no idea why I want to do this 😂
Uh idk, the simply-connected topology of a rectangle is pretty thoroughly baked into X11, for example
Welcome to Apple-flavored futurism
Every usability report I've heard of the Galaxy Edge has been quite scathing because everyone accidentally touches the Edge
There is a difference between visuals that further a functional purpose and visuals that eat energy/compute solely for eye candy and further the agenda of planned obsolescence
They would get extremely sued if they did this
Great - reference please!
chop up
Cutting fiberglass?
Well, I scored it with a utility knife and then snapped it apart
Oh that's the good case
I don't know how to do that well. Did you have guide wood on both sides to make a straight cut?
I made a couple of marks on each edge and then used a straight edge on one side, holding it down with one hand while I scored it with the other. Wasn't perfect, but still trying to figure out a better way to do it with the tools I have lol (or figure out what I need to do it better)
It was actually this video that gave me the idea lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sovxWSPrVLU
Need to fit a small enclosure? or just build a separate circuit? Thankfully, trimming perfboard is a snap. #adafruit #collinslabnotes

Yeah, that's basically what I've tried but had a noticeable amount of slippage. My next attempt will probably feature scrap wood clamped to both sides so that there is only one way for the knife to go
That's not a bad idea
if either of you have a 3D printer, you could probably make a knife guide for it
Oh wait this was actually when I was trying to cut acrylic, which might be more finicky
But similar concept
in fact, that sounds like something that could be super useful for me to print off...
just a block of plastic that's thicker than the depth of the sharp bit of the blade, with a gap in it that's just wider than the blade
clamp that to your board
That's a pretty good idea too @quartz wren . I actually bought an ender 3 V2 awhile back but have not had the motivation to put it together and learn how to use it yet lol. Hoping to do that before the end of the year
I have just a regular Ender 3
used to have 3
but I gave two away for christmas
because I was planning on moving and wouldn't've have been able to bring them with
Ah yeah that makes sense, it definitely needs some room
even disassembled to extrusions
it was more the shipping that was an issue
because I was going halfway across the US
and now I'm not
oh dang
meh, at least I've got one
and I made it taller
I took the 20-40 extrusions from the vertical section of a Tronxy X5S to replace the ones it had
added like 150mm to it
on the vertical
oh also snagged one of the Tronxy's lift rods to replace the original with
I'm going to rebuild the one I snagged those parts from in a prusa-style kinematic with the bed space of a Tronxy X5S but the build height of an Ender 3
yeah, I could print a to-scale model of my arm from my elbow to my outstretched fingertips in the upgraded Ender 3
(just rested my elbow on the bed and set my arm vertical and my finger tips don't touch the top of the build space)
afaik they did do this, and did get sued for it
@quartz wren Not gonna lie, I don't know what most of that means, but hopefully in a few months it will make sense to me. It sounds awesome though 😮
For my part I'd just like to be able to build gadgets that don't have to fit in a pre-made plastic project enclosure box lol
If anyone is picking up the Guardians of the Galaxy game, there's a code in the front for a rewards program - if anyone doesn't need it, can you DM the code to me?
Multiple times
They have deep enough pockets that there are many people looking for creative lawsuits against them
And additionally, there is a whole industry of SEO that will notice this even if they aren't primarily looking for lawsuits
Okay, so at the beginning of Monsters Inc., sully says good morning to Ted who is a massively tall monster. Have you ever thought about what it would be like if he was a scarer lol
Oh, geez
Just open the door and you hear giant chicken noises
If you got any 3D printing questions, troubleshooting, etc. just ping me with what you need answers to and I'll walk you through it
done so for many others already haha
First q: how much does it cost to make a first 3d printing project
Is joining a makerspace the only cost effective way for an individual?
Do I need to run windows and/or pay for commercial cad software?
I mean, that depends
oh
no paid software needed
you can model in blender if you really want to
You can get $100 printers, 1kg of filament is usually like $10-20 and makes a great many things. All FOSS software
but for CAD I use OpenSCAD
Well, there are paid options, but you don't NEED them
^
Does the cad tool typically compile to 3d printer instructions or is that a separate tool
Many projects, just from cost of filament, cost a few pennies to a couple dollars
Also does each printer have its own quirks for instruction language
Slicer takes your model and turns it into code. There are standards, and the slicer usually does all the work for weird printers anyway
but for most ones you're going to buy at consumer level they'll be standardized
yeah, as long as you've got things set up correctly for the flavor of GCODE you're good
Oh I thought g-code was for cnc
additive versus subtractive CNC
CNC printer vs. CNC router/mill
and this is a place where the term "same difference" applies
Ok so, for around $150 I could get a printer and some filament, compile a cad model to g-code using foss on Linux and print it?
because there's the same difference between CNC printer vs CNC router as additive versus subtractive
And then future projects would be only the price of filament
Yeah I saw the emoji reaction high five between you two :p
Yup! You can even build your own printer if you want
How is that possible
because capitalism
a lot of initial demand without so much initial supply, so the supply rises to meet the demand and the demand wanes a bit so things are cheap
which is why they went from thousands of dollars to the hundred dollar range
I meant more the, how could someone build their own
It's just a microcontroller and some motors and rails
But yeah low prices are nice
Yes but what about precision
don't need as precise of assembly if you have extrusions with good 90 degree references to work from
Commercial units can be more precise, but off the shelf parts can be amazingly precise. Stepper precision is more important than, say, frame size precision, because it's all relative to the print head, not the frame
Ah, that makes sense / I think I basically get that
also frame precision really only matters when it comes to having your axes perpendicular to each other
which is made easy with extrusions that have 90 degree corners built in
I want to build this https://hackaday.com/2021/08/03/strangest-upside-down-3d-printer-fits-in-a-filament-box/
yeah, I've been wanting to do an upside down printer for a while (one that wasn't SLA)
this is actually a solid concept and I might just nab it
for the tiny print bed I have
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3356860 this one's pretty cool as far as small designs

I want to design a self-replicating printer
you mean fully self replicating or just can print all its own elements?
Fully
yeah, I feel that
I'm working toward it but I'm starting with one that prints all of its own frame
and all that's required is a 3D printer electronics kit
kind of hard to print motors
but once I figure out multi-material SLS printing
with ceramic and metal
Gotta aim for infinity
@delicate stream for the record, self replicating printers is one of the main goals of the lab I'm building
and I'm more than willing to share my designs
This is how we take over the universe
also with a computer chip 3D printer
I have a concept but I need to get good at vacuum tube manufacturing first
that's a nice BPM, jelly
which watch platform is this?
Garmin
oh cool
Forerunner 645, I love it
did you take the face off or is this an open source thing?
Dang too fast lol
Multiplicative CNC
You can’t say you didn’t laugh 😂
Okay, how about this one:
https://mobile.twitter.com/marcedwards/status/1450798991633833992
you can always build case around it
I prefer good old ch monitors
the rebels in star wars had mobile communication station case with notch
Less than a month before Wheel of Time comes to Amazon Prime!
They did a great job with the Shadowspawn, v spoopy
I was just offered a dead 2nd gen Roomba, and my immediate thought and reply was "sure, I'll try my technonecromancy on it"
does this link lead to a dead end to anyone else? https://www.ti.com/general/docs/suppproductinfo.tsp?distId=10&gotoUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ti.com%2Flit%2Fgpn%2Fsn7407

That's what I ended up having to do. No idea why the link was dead
Nice mathemarics book, it is called A Decade of the Berkeley Math Circle.
Zvedelina Stankova, she is a IMO silver medalist
yes, it is a nice collection
have you seen the classic "What is mathematics" by Courant and Robbins?
it looks very interesting.
it is a classic
this recent one is also highly recommended: Mathematical Omnibus: Thirty Lectures on Classic Mathematics https://www.amazon.com/dp/0821843168/
lol
when you want to test POV staff but never mastered how to twirl it fast enough by hand
You need to design a glove that has a set of magnets on a spinning motor so you can hold out your hand, staff attached to it by the magnets at your palm, and press a button with the other hand to spin it
"Holographic" spinning LED displays are commercially available. Annoyingly, they use a proprietary format and the software is pretty much unusable.
I know - so I made my own, open-source one. Right now I am working on version 2...
I quite appreciate that: it would be a great upgrade for my Doctor Strange costume.
I believe I had posted version 1 here before: https://www.instructables.com/Persistence-of-Vision-LED-Staff
It's a shame PoV is next to impossible to capture in photos and video... There was a Doctor Strange at Otakon [he's there every year] who upgraded to having a functioning portal into someone's refrigerator, lol
Couldn't tell in pictures...
I learned how to do that with photos, but never mastered video. But it is not impossible: this seller managed to make a decent video: https://www.etsy.com/listing/672695106/led-pixel-staff-transformer-pro-72-wi-fi
Pixel Staff Pro 72 is the perfect model of LED staff. Convenient easy click connection will not only disassemble the staff, but also transform it into poi in less than half a minute. Check our youtube video: https://youtu.be/ZySJ-ELWjiE The Pixel Staff Pro 72 assembled in staff can have a length
Oh yeah, possible, but I think you kinda have to sync the PoV device and camera's shutter/frame rates... Very hard to know what shutter/frame rates people might be using at a con
Especially when you have people like me who shoot video in 29.97FPS and most folks are 30 or 60, lol
Lol true true
I always wondered where this 29.97 fps comes from
From the broadcast TV days
It was easier to transmit apparently
Breaks down into frequencies easier I believe when modulated
Yeah that
Apparently introducing color messed it all up
Matt explains it well in his video, lol
Matt's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GJUM6pCpew
I look at the historical quirks which gave us TV at 29.97 frames per second. In North America at least. It's a comfortable 25 fps in Europe.
More on that thing I mentioned at the end of the video here:
https://www.patreon.com/standupmaths
Here is the spherical video I was making with Henry Segerman which made me research NTSC frame rates in th...
So color struggles in transmission. Such a funny thing to think about
Now we have color corrected displays at 120Hz or more
Technology is so cool
Now we fling pixels willy-nilly in 4K and are like "meh"
I believe another remnant of those days is video standard where pixels are not square but have 11:10 aspect ratio
mostly
Not all pixels are created equal
So... Doing background checks for my new job... signed up for an account on a state site, which required creating security questions... picked 3 that are not easily guessed... and then I go to log in with the temp password that was emailed in plaintext, and then it asks you to verify, so I pick security questions, and it asks me questions that were not the ones I chose, and thus it has no answers for.
Also, it has a password checker to create a new password, that has pretty simple requirements:
- at least 8 characters
- at least one capital
- at least one lower
- at least one special character
- doesn't include your username or first/last name
Put in a 16 character randomly generated password... It says it doesn't adhere to the policy... But doesn't tell you why.
And then it reloads the page showing 8 dots instead of the 16 I typed in.... Does that mean MAX 8 characters?!
Max 14.... stupid
it doesn't require unicorn hair as part of the password?
It needs to be 8-14 characters BUT NOWHERE DO THEY MENTION AN UPPER LIMIT AND WHY WOULD YOU MAX IT AT 14 ANYWAY
And then I put in one it says is strong [14 characters] and then it kicks me out!
Like, just said "you are successfully logged out!", like it logged me out when it changed... but no, still the temp password!
Ok, second time worked... I guess it timed out after too many tries because it's dumb? Also it keeps taking you to logout pages when you do anything with the password that says "close this window and open the application again" instead of just taking you back to the login....
Why are government sites so bad
No doubt behind the scenes it prints out a password change form which has to be faxed to another office so that someone can process the change in an Excel spreadsheet...
Also, when you INITIALLY click the login link, it says "your attempt to log in has failed. Please try again."
Wouldn't really surprise me...
I ran across a site recently that didn't even let you set up a password. Every time you logged in, it would just send a link to your email address of record.
Also the first site just has your social in plaintext across multiple pages...
I'm honestly amazed that the government computer systems haven't been exploded at this point
heh i use obne goverment site thats very secure
its good in most cases, except it couldnt remember the computer, so it keeps asking "remember this pc?"
"you cannot reuse computer name"
i got to just mashing random charactors for computer name
better than verify each danged time. but evenually they finally fixed that bug
Bleh
yeah. it'd expire on super verify if browser closed. it doesnt now
I hate tech sometimes
I just had to check my license because I forgot how to spell my middle name
lol
Lol. My middle name isn't hard to spell, but there are two different ways to spell it
lol its bit different for deaf
we have to memorize all words spellings
because theres no other way to do it
Don't you ever forget things you haven't used in a long time? XD
reason I cant remember how to spell my bro middle name because its been minium decade since i last saw it lol
My middle name is something I use on exceedingly rare occasions...
i cant remember last time i had to use mine
I'd probs not use my legal name if it weren't required for jobs and stuff
Gah, almost 1... need sleep... night night
lol night
throwback to the time I forgot to clamp a screw terminal & got vibechecked
It's Pixel Day! \o/
i don't mean to sound crazy but i am starting to think every piece of hardware that is internet connected has a backdoor.
mostly routers.
Certainly a million lightyears away from being correct.
and it's easy to call it a security flaw.
that way no one points a finger
but to be honest, fingers should be pointed.
Well, that would be a start.. if there was any credibility.
and as you can see now he goes on to troll me to hide his agenda
- No agenda.
- If you're going to make insane claims with zero factual basis, expect the truth.
yet the proof is all around you
every day
people want your data, people want to identify you and billions are spent on it
wanting does not nessicarily translate to having
Yeah, not seeing any of that.
I see data that is only pertinent to serving ads... Which means less than nothing to me.
dude do you know how many backdoors have been found in common hardware?
@blissful roost you are only lying to everyone here
you made a claim, its up to you to provide proof
its not my job to disprove or even prove it, toster
Literally how it works everywhere, xxcoder. 🙂
go read up on hackaday
That's simple logic.. as well as debate ethics.
i do
whats you talking about?
sure, few hardware have it. it does NOT translate to all of em
why do you think certain routers are banned in certain countries?
Plus... there's always doing.. gasp RESEARCH
ill stop debating this.
you posted a picture of it
Ohh!
see once again pulling out insults
much sad that its a utter faulure
Yarp
Is it bad that I keep reloading the tracking page, even though I shouldn't expect any movement at all for another.. around 90 minutes? 😛
5000
lol
I hate waiting for deliveries. lol
yeah waiting for deliveries suck
Especially when it's a Pixel 6 Pro. 😄
and this is another trick they love doing.
spamming away the truth
awesome
I should watch Will Stelter's new video
You should visit youtube and watch ColdFusion
He's been restoring a big ol' power hammer.
Beaudry.. Not seen any of those 1st hand.
yeah honestly who need 300Mbits everywhere to look at cat pictures with exploited meta data?
Yeah, but.. it's definitely a nice to have, especially when I have to use it at work.
I can't connect personal devices to the company network, so.. shrugs
makes sense
if it makes you happy and makes life easier
10/10
i wish we had quantum entanglement figured out
be connected anywhere
I haven't seen a Motorola since.. I can't even recall.
I think one of the Nexus models was made by Motorola?
moto used to make the nicest device with a slide out keyboard
🙂
my last phone was moto x4
it was a device darth vader would be proud of
Awww... it's all tiny and cute. 😄
G9?
omg
i hope some other ppl come online that are not sheep with their heads up the chimney
no idea its not numbered. fairly recent though
Hummm
G9 is a 2020 model.
Lovely spec... until I get to the screen.
Display Type IPS LCD
Size 6.8 inches, 109.8 cm2 (~83.1% screen-to-body ratio)
Resolution 720 x 1640 pixels (~263 ppi density)
If that's the right one, I couldn't deal with that.
well never had any problem with thjat lol
Subjective, innit.
is the pi zero 2 out yet?
Still makes me laugh.. My wife got the iPony 12 Pro Max..
Larger screen than the P4XL... at lower resolution. 😛
I should look for new KB & mouse.
<@&327289013561982976> * Trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
WOO-HOO! Delivery between 11:39-12:39 😄
Pi Zero 2 W ahhhhh
50% price increase for 400% speed improvement... Holy crap!
Slow boi
i wonder if it will beat my bpi m2z
I might still get the original, for the sake of it.
But.. the new one is actually useful.
@delicate stream remember i said i want pi zero 2
One time I under locked a Zero to 1MHz and it took over an hour to boot
hahaha
so nice to feel heard
It was only a matter of time
@delicate stream how even
And I thought a Z80 was painful at 4MHz
ahh my z80 those were great imes
You can set the clock frequency in the board config
my mind was so young
Of course, being limited to whatever fits on the ROM helps keep the boot time down.
Same as overclocking
i have never tried going down in speed
Indeed
Generally you wouldn't, lol
Of course.. I keep forgetting to buy moar solder. ¬_¬
I was just being dumb
lol
i have too much solder
Gotta get ready for work bbl
cheers gl

Baroque music is very nice : ) , they always tried to be impressive, radicals as I learnt in high school but this music looks so calm...
For those not in the know, PID stands for proportional, integral, derivative control. I’ll break it down:
P: if you’re not where you want to be, get there.
I: if you haven’t been where you want to be for a long time, get there faster
D: if you’re getting close to where you want to be, slow down.
Motors, in general, don’t start or stop on a dime...
Joins Pixel 6 Pro waitlist
they show previews from "trusted" sites, iirc
it's a mixed bag with imgur from what I've seen
they usually show it
but when they don't
sometimes it gets fixed by adding a space or a newline at the end
which is why it's confusing
It's ssssooooo beautiful!!! 🥰
@quartz wren i recently found my DNS is a constant target
It's dark, cold, and rainy...
One thing I do miss about Florida is the more consistent sunrise time throughout the year
Soon coffee tho
I like cold
My body is not built for it...

I like bad weather if I don't have to be in it. If I can watch safely from an insulated and regulated box.
Because if you go to extremes of insulated and regulated boxes for survival of environmental factors, having that on earth is nothing in comparison to the bad weather you'll have in a space colony
And that's what I'm gearing towards.
No clue if any of that makes sense I still haven't finished making coffee so brain is still cycling for a boot device in bios
Booting from local drive C:\offee
First part, yes. Second part, less so.
I like rain
