#

That's... gross.

#

Definitely one from the 'Fascism 101' playbook.

tardy badger
#

Yeah, it’s a skewed concept

#

If you took it literally then of your parents said “go rob a store of all their meat” you’d then be obligated to rob that store

delicate stream
#

I've known people in their 20s who were more wise and mature than people in their 60s, so age and experience isn't everything

tardy badger
#

You can not and should never conflate honoring one’s parents with strict obedience. It simply is not in the meaning.

blissful roost
#
  1. I'm 43.
  2. I never "obeyed" my parents when I was young.
#

When my wife and I got married, I insisted that "obey" be omitted from the wedding vows.

wooden schooner
#

did you still vow to worship her?

#

"I'll worship you, but you still ain't getting my side of the bed"

thick wind
#

Taking the opposite extreme and assuming that your parents ARE always right, you also miss the fundamental reasoning behind their commands if you depend only on strict obedience. You need to process and learn from those with more knowledge and experience, not just blindly go "monkey see, monkey do."

blissful roost
#

And, yes.. I do.. but that wasn't in the vows. 😄

wooden schooner
blissful roost
#

Heck.. I'd rather we hadn't gotten married in church.. but a Star Trek themed wedding was a longshot anyway. 😛

tardy badger
#

Lol

blissful roost
#

At least I got a Star Trek cake. 😄

wooden schooner
#

People could just throw random crap in their wedding vows

blissful roost
#

Well... keep whatever meaningful, traditional vows you like.. but..

wooden schooner
#

"I vow to love you, and also, every second Thursday of the month, I'll cook dinner"

blissful roost
#

Lots of people write their own vows anyway.

#

We did.

wooden schooner
#

"also, I'm not a good cook"

blissful roost
#

That's ok..
People are often shocked when they find out I'm not a good electrician.

wooden schooner
#

I put that up on a poster in my bedroom when I first heard you say it

blissful roost
#

😄

#

Pretty sure that one is older than me..

jovial path
#

someone here could contact the governor of New York, I think he can do it.

#

But why?

blissful roost
#

Hahahahhaaa... No.

#

I was just thinking about what to cook this weekend.....

Indeed, but.... I'm not that much of a nerd anyway. 🤣

delicate stream
#

Lol

#

Same

#

I love Trek, but not enough to theme a wedding

tardy badger
#

Yeah

blissful roost
#

We will do a vow renewal, so.. that could be something different.

delicate stream
#

Hehe, that's a good time to just have fun with it

#

I wonder what would happen if you put signs up that said "litter" and "don't litter" right next to each other -- would they cancel the effect of? Confuse people? Expose the robots that are hiding in plain sight but can't handle a paradoxical order?

wooden schooner
#

pretty sure people would assume the first one was a "don't litter" sign that had been vandalized

delicate stream
#

Lol

blissful roost
#

I tend to ignore signs if they don't offer any new or useful information.

#

"Don't litter" beside a trash can is pointless to me.
I know what it's for.

blissful roost
#

shrugs

tardy badger
#

Okay so here’s a question.. if you obey your parents/spouse absolutely… do you buy a Ouija board to communicate with them for what you’re supposed to do if they die?

blissful roost
#

Oof

tardy badger
#

Serious question though

#

Because there comes some point where they won’t be able to guide your life

blissful roost
#

I'd expect my parents to leave a will, with instruction.

stray wind
#

Ok folks, this has gotten beyond off topic, and is inching in on being inappropriate for this server. Please stop engaging in this conversation. Thank you.

delicate stream
#

I want these numbers to be lower

#

I wonder if you could mod a MagTag to be tri-color

tardy badger
#

Would be cool to try

delicate stream
#

Oh oh oh, I can just connect a tri-color display's ribbon like I did with the flexi-eInk!

#

If it's the same driver

tardy badger
#

I think it would be a different driver but possibly the same pin connection

delicate stream
#

Lemme see...

#

I can't find the controller on the MagTag

#

Actually, I think they're all the same controller and connector -- the guide for eInk is vague and works for both

tardy badger
#

Well, the controller is embedded in the e-ink itself

#

It’s not physically on the board

#

I would check the tricolor schematic to see if the pins and overall design is the same

#

I imagine both are from Good Displays which probably means they are at least similar

thick wind
#

They should all be the same

delicate stream
#

Oh, what does the eInk friend do then? Just a breakout?

tardy badger
#

🤷‍♂️

thick wind
#

It's all SPI communication

delicate stream
#

Oh yeah RAM buffer

tardy badger
#

Yeah, it is all SPI

thick wind
#

Same pinouts for all of the ones sold by Adafruit, anyways

tardy badger
#

But voltages might be higher with tricolor vs monochrome

delicate stream
#

To the data sheets!

tardy badger
#

But I really feel like in general they should be the same

#

I just haven’t designed around more than monochrome

thick wind
#

The eink friend handles tricolor displays, so I'd be surprised if MagTag didn't...

delicate stream
#

Oh... No data sheets

#

I'mma just try it

tardy badger
#

Worst that could happen is a temporary smoke machine

#

Or sparks

#

But probably a smoke machine

delicate stream
#

I'll put it on your tab

tardy badger
#

Lol

#

My tab is already saturated from Medical bills

delicate stream
#

Nothing happened

tardy badger
#

Nothing?

delicate stream
#

Tri-color plugged into MagTag did nothing

tardy badger
#

Hmm. Did you look at the library for the tricolor e-ink to see if there is anything different in initialization

delicate stream
#

I literally just plugged it in and saw if it booted XD

delicate stream

I don't have a quarter and a Zero to compare, but I think that's a tad taller than a Zero and like 2/3 as wide?

Smol, yet powerful

lusty fossil

I have food allergies so I can't answer this myself. I want to get full size candy bars to give to the kids in my complex. If you were trick or treating what candy bar would you be super stoked to get?

delicate stream
#

Personally, Hershey bars are my absolute favorite. But I too have an allergy, so any of the popular peanut things are off my radar

lusty fossil
#

I was considering snickers

#

I figure one nutty bar, one full chocolate and one pure sugar

delicate stream
#

I think they're popular, I never had an issue trading when I was younger

lusty fossil
#

Lol I vividly recall trading my snickers to friends for the pure sugar candies

delicate stream
#

Lol. So yeah, Hershey bars, Snickers, and sugar-blasted sugar bars would probably make most happy

#

One of the nice things is you don't have to worry about pleasing everyone -- someone else will give something you don't, kids will trade, and all will probably be happy

lusty fossil
#

I hope it isn't weird to give kids this much candy

delicate stream
#

Lol, no, you'll be super popular for giving out such a rare and generous treat

lusty fossil

#

I actually got a great idea from my mom, who is NOT technically or mechanically inclined -- I was trying to make a full wrap case, and she suggested just a top cover that straps it down to my wrist like the bandages do, lol

#

Getting the bottom, which is curved, to fit properly... that would have taken forever

#

I tried to organize it some XD

#

V4-V6 actually stemmed off of V2

tardy badger

We’ve sort of reached an ideological inflection point with Covid in which we won’t see enough people vaccinated to tamp it down below endemic levels

@tardy badger do you buy and solder everything yourself or send off to one them PCB fabs?

tardy badger

Yeah, I buy parts in bulk, use a stencil, and cook on a hot plate

idle iron

Very cool, that sounds like a fun project

tardy badger
#

I’m pretty efficient for my overall process

lusty fossil

What hotplate?

tardy badger

I also use mini panels rather than assembling individual boards

idle iron

Well, there are diy pick n place machines

lusty fossil

Could you possibly point me to the hotplate? I need one for far lower duty cycle than you're using and I may as well get a good one

i'm teeling you with the garbage design idea's they have.. makes me believe the average IQ is 60 everywhere

#

Sales monkey "hey jim we need a bad design idea"
jim: "hold my beer"

#

no hope for these developers as they make everything worse over time, and i think it's all in the ego and "yep our customers are dumb and we love e'm"

#

They know what they are selling is garbage.

delicate stream
#

I mean, it's not all garbage. But that was a very "whhhhyyyy" moment for me

#

I just want my phones to be Nexus 6P form factor and my laptops to be the same general thing laptops have been for decades...

#

No notches, no rounded screen corners or curved edges, no pinholes, just flat rectangle screens, on all devices

dusk oracle
#

i think is garbage as you paid for hole in your screen

#

aesthetics is nice for a monkey that wears a ring.

delicate stream
#

I meant their products aren't all garbage. iPad Pro and iPad Mini 6 are magic

#

I do think notches are a garbage concept

dusk oracle
#

i agree

#

next they will make circular screens

#

"some guy reading this from apple" i should have thought of that!

delicate stream
#

I do remember a phone with a smaller secondary display above the main one, but that was independent of the Android display -- it didn't mess with the original experience, and added something

#

Circle displays are for watches

dusk oracle
#

thats fine at the end of the day think about how many applications written for that OS will never expect a gaping hole in the centre of the display

delicate stream
#

Yeah... All of them until now

#

But you'd think the OS would handle it

tardy badger
#

It’s just a UI problem with the notch, easily fixible

dusk oracle
#

no one is going to rewrite their video game just to compensate for a design oversight

tardy badger
#

You’re acting like it’s so hard to fix that

delicate stream

Apple will probably patch it, but I still think it's a worse experience for no real benefit

dusk oracle
#

day one me at apple at design meeting.
here is a sword harakiri pls

delicate stream
#

I give it a few days or a week or so before they fix it

tardy badger
#

It’s a neutral experience because not everyone will be bothered by the design choices

#

Or the UI issues

#

Which are fixible

#

And the notch? Also not a big deal. It’s a better use of space than a chonky bezel

delicate stream
#

They didn't have chonky bezels before...

dusk oracle
#

just to be a iritation.. i'm putting all my status information in that spot right ther

tardy badger
#

Well, regardless there is more usable space in a smaller overall format

dusk oracle
#

XD

#

i'm laughing so hard

tardy badger
#

It’s a suboptimal UI experience at the expense of space optimization

#

But it still really isn’t that big of a deal

dusk oracle
#

aesthetics destroy function

delicate stream

tardy badger

blissful roost

It affects the aesthetics

And then there is no running away lol

#

I’m not understanding how a notch gives an inferior experience?

dusk oracle

O_o

tardy badger

Other than UI adjustments, it’s just the top of the screen. People rarely use the top of their screens.

blissful roost
#

A notch removes useful screen space.

dusk oracle

blissful roost
#

^

tardy badger
#

Okay… bad visuals and not a great argument

dusk oracle
#

apple not longer needs 1KB removed to get a os to work

#

why continue this tradition

tardy badger
#

If you covered the notch, you would simply have the screen you had before. Notches simply allow more usable space and less dead space.

#

It’s not an insane or ill purposed design choice

#

Maybe not as optimal because it takes more effort to design around.

I don't think they'll come as close as they did before Jobs came back in 97

I like Tim Cook as a person, not so much the CEO of apple

I think apple has horribly drifted from where Jobs had the company in 2011..

Sure Apple Silicon is great, but it feels like for as large and moving as apple is, that should have come years ago

I think it's a huge improvement since Jobs went away..

Sure, it’s a more human environment there

While that is a joke, you’re actually right

My wife and I play animal crossing and they have a new DLC coming next week. Fun little game if you like doing real life stuff in a game where it’s more fun

First big paid DLC aside from the Sanrio amiibo cards

dusk oracle

sadly you want the next AAA game... time to get robbed everywhere.
Cant just have propper game code.. you need a 3090.
Cant have a physical copy "not that it ever stopped piracy"

#

Can't have a complete game "were gona cut it up and make you keep paying"

delicate stream
#

I don't do downloads because I don't want to risk losing access to the games 10-20 years from now, and we know they'll probably shutter the service at some point -- they can't support devices forever, unless they figure out an easy way to make systems be able to do all the new things but also support legacy without extra work

real falcon
#

animl crossing is still way too expensive

delicate stream

It's all about settings. I can tell you a 3090 doesn't get you so far when you're playing Minecraft at 4K with max everything and raytrace shaders, lol

tardy badger

Lol

dusk oracle
#

i can beg to differ

#

modern warfare "needs a cpu running atleast sse2"

or some games needing DX12

#

it's a good example of how new standards create paywalls

tardy badger
#

DX12 was supported all the way back on Radeon HD 6770

delicate stream

10 series has DX12 support (shipped with it) and SSE2 is a CPU feature

#

Also SSE2 has been standard for 20 years

tardy badger
#

DX13 is another topic

dusk oracle
#

i know it's still a fact that you are too lazy to code propperly so you deny a entire generation of cpu's

#

like win 11 is

tardy badger
#

Win 11 is just just stupidity under the guise of consumer safety

#

Forcing someone to have a TPM for an upgrade doesn’t make computers safer

#

And a handful of security researchers even showed that TPM2.0 modules or firmware rarely slowed down attacks where it supposedly was supposed to help

delicate stream
#

And it's ugly too

tardy badger
#

Mostly because hacking and malware grows at a much faster rate than hardware and Os software

delicate stream
#

I'm leaving Windows because of all the 11 crap

tardy badger
#

The fact that if your computer is stolen, a TPM2.0 module can be circumvented with hardware is another reason requiring it is just plain stupid

#

Wrong plain lol

delicate stream

Lol

#

The fact that I'm now very upset with Microsoft and not a huge fan of MacOS is driving me to be a Linux person

I stopped doing end-user support when 7 ended, so.. meh

tardy badger
#

Windows 10 was okay

delicate stream
#

I skipped 8 unphased. If they do come out with a Windows 12 and reverse the crap, or just reverse it in 11, I'll revisit my choice... But right now, 10 will likely be the last version of Windows I'll use (daily driver anyway)

tardy badger
#

It was a far cry from 7

blissful roost

I'll probably use Win10 as a secondary when I get Ryzen, but.. kinda need it for DX12.

tardy badger

I just dislike how difficult windows makes it to get Development environments going

i have to agree developing on windows due to it's multitool like existence is not fun

Yeah, that's basically what I've tried but had a noticeable amount of slippage. My next attempt will probably feature scrap wood clamped to both sides so that there is only one way for the knife to go

fast sedge

That's not a bad idea

quartz wren

if either of you have a 3D printer, you could probably make a knife guide for it

wooden schooner

Oh wait this was actually when I was trying to cut acrylic, which might be more finicky

But similar concept

quartz wren

in fact, that sounds like something that could be super useful for me to print off...

just a block of plastic that's thicker than the depth of the sharp bit of the blade, with a gap in it that's just wider than the blade

#

clamp that to your board

fast sedge
#

That's a pretty good idea too @quartz wren . I actually bought an ender 3 V2 awhile back but have not had the motivation to put it together and learn how to use it yet lol. Hoping to do that before the end of the year

I took the 20-40 extrusions from the vertical section of a Tronxy X5S to replace the ones it had

added like 150mm to it

on the vertical

#

oh also snagged one of the Tronxy's lift rods to replace the original with

#

I'm going to rebuild the one I snagged those parts from in a prusa-style kinematic with the bed space of a Tronxy X5S but the build height of an Ender 3

yeah, I could print a to-scale model of my arm from my elbow to my outstretched fingertips in the upgraded Ender 3

(just rested my elbow on the bed and set my arm vertical and my finger tips don't touch the top of the build space)

@quartz wren Not gonna lie, I don't know what most of that means, but hopefully in a few months it will make sense to me. It sounds awesome though 😮

wooden schooner
#

First q: how much does it cost to make a first 3d printing project

#

Is joining a makerspace the only cost effective way for an individual?

#

Do I need to run windows and/or pay for commercial cad software?

quartz wren
#

I mean, that depends

#

oh

#

no paid software needed

#

you can model in blender if you really want to

delicate stream
#

You can get $100 printers, 1kg of filament is usually like $10-20 and makes a great many things. All FOSS software

quartz wren
#

but for CAD I use OpenSCAD

delicate stream
#

Well, there are paid options, but you don't NEED them

quartz wren
#

^

wooden schooner
#

Does the cad tool typically compile to 3d printer instructions or is that a separate tool

quartz wren
#

that's separate but free

#

that's called a slicer

delicate stream
#

Many projects, just from cost of filament, cost a few pennies to a couple dollars

wooden schooner
#

Also does each printer have its own quirks for instruction language

quartz wren
#

generally no

#

but there are some exceptions

delicate stream
#

Slicer takes your model and turns it into code. There are standards, and the slicer usually does all the work for weird printers anyway

quartz wren
#

but for most ones you're going to buy at consumer level they'll be standardized

#

yeah, as long as you've got things set up correctly for the flavor of GCODE you're good

wooden schooner
#

Oh I thought g-code was for cnc

quartz wren
#

3D printers are CNC

#

CNC just means computer numerical control

wooden schooner
#

Well uh

#

Yeah but 3d printing is,

#

Actually can you correct me here

quartz wren
#

additive versus subtractive CNC

delicate stream
#

CNC printer vs. CNC router/mill

quartz wren
#

and this is a place where the term "same difference" applies

wooden schooner
#

Ok so, for around $150 I could get a printer and some filament, compile a cad model to g-code using foss on Linux and print it?

quartz wren
#

because there's the same difference between CNC printer vs CNC router as additive versus subtractive

wooden schooner
#

And then future projects would be only the price of filament

wooden schooner
delicate stream
wooden schooner
#

How is that possible

quartz wren
#

because capitalism

#

a lot of initial demand without so much initial supply, so the supply rises to meet the demand and the demand wanes a bit so things are cheap

#

which is why they went from thousands of dollars to the hundred dollar range

wooden schooner
#

I meant more the, how could someone build their own

delicate stream
#

It's just a microcontroller and some motors and rails

wooden schooner
#

But yeah low prices are nice

wooden schooner
quartz wren
#

this is achieved using steppers

#

and microstepping

wooden schooner
#

What about precision assembly

#

Like I can't put a thing exactly into a place

quartz wren
#

don't need as precise of assembly if you have extrusions with good 90 degree references to work from

delicate stream
# wooden schooner Yes but what about precision

Commercial units can be more precise, but off the shelf parts can be amazingly precise. Stepper precision is more important than, say, frame size precision, because it's all relative to the print head, not the frame

wooden schooner
#

Ah, that makes sense / I think I basically get that

quartz wren
#

also frame precision really only matters when it comes to having your axes perpendicular to each other

#

which is made easy with extrusions that have 90 degree corners built in

delicate stream
quartz wren
#

yeah, I've been wanting to do an upside down printer for a while (one that wasn't SLA)

#

this is actually a solid concept and I might just nab it

#

for the tiny print bed I have

delicate stream
#

That one is also tiiiiny

#

I could fit dozens in my shelves

quartz wren
#

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3356860 this one's pretty cool as far as small designs

delicate stream
#

I want to design a self-replicating printer

quartz wren
#

you mean fully self replicating or just can print all its own elements?

delicate stream
#

Fully

quartz wren
#

yeah, I feel that

#

I'm working toward it but I'm starting with one that prints all of its own frame

#

and all that's required is a 3D printer electronics kit

#

kind of hard to print motors

#

but once I figure out multi-material SLS printing

#

with ceramic and metal

delicate stream
#

Hmm

#

That's rough on nozzles

delicate stream
#

Gotta aim for infinity

quartz wren
#

@delicate stream for the record, self replicating printers is one of the main goals of the lab I'm building

#

and I'm more than willing to share my designs

tardy badger

tardy badger

So color struggles in transmission. Such a funny thing to think about

So... Doing background checks for my new job... signed up for an account on a state site, which required creating security questions... picked 3 that are not easily guessed... and then I go to log in with the temp password that was emailed in plaintext, and then it asks you to verify, so I pick security questions, and it asks me questions that were not the ones I chose, and thus it has no answers for.

#

Also, it has a password checker to create a new password, that has pretty simple requirements:

  • at least 8 characters
  • at least one capital
  • at least one lower
  • at least one special character
  • doesn't include your username or first/last name
Put in a 16 character randomly generated password... It says it doesn't adhere to the policy... But doesn't tell you why.
#

And then it reloads the page showing 8 dots instead of the 16 I typed in.... Does that mean MAX 8 characters?!

#

Max 14.... stupid

stoic mesa
#

it doesn't require unicorn hair as part of the password?

delicate stream
#

It needs to be 8-14 characters BUT NOWHERE DO THEY MENTION AN UPPER LIMIT AND WHY WOULD YOU MAX IT AT 14 ANYWAY

#

And then I put in one it says is strong [14 characters] and then it kicks me out!

#

Like, just said "you are successfully logged out!", like it logged me out when it changed... but no, still the temp password!

#

Ok, second time worked... I guess it timed out after too many tries because it's dumb? Also it keeps taking you to logout pages when you do anything with the password that says "close this window and open the application again" instead of just taking you back to the login....

#

Why are government sites so bad

crystal ore
#

No doubt behind the scenes it prints out a password change form which has to be faxed to another office so that someone can process the change in an Excel spreadsheet...

delicate stream
#

Also, when you INITIALLY click the login link, it says "your attempt to log in has failed. Please try again."

#

dusk oracle
#

why do you think certain routers are banned in certain countries?

blissful roost
#

blissful roost
#

I hate waiting for deliveries. lol

real falcon
#

yeah waiting for deliveries suck

blissful roost
#

Especially when it's a Pixel 6 Pro. 😄

dusk oracle
#

spamming away the truth

blissful roost
#

CAn't wait for it to arrive.

5G speeds are quite fun

blissful roost
#

I should watch Will Stelter's new video

dusk oracle

You should visit youtube and watch ColdFusion

He's been restoring a big ol' power hammer.

#

Beaudry.. Not seen any of those 1st hand.

real falcon
#

dusk oracle
#

blissful roost
#

Yeah, but.. it's definitely a nice to have, especially when I have to use it at work.

#

I can't connect personal devices to the company network, so.. shrugs

dusk oracle
#

makes sense

#

if it makes you happy and makes life easier

#

10/10

#

i wish we had quantum entanglement figured out

#

blissful roost
#

I think one of the Nexus models was made by Motorola?

real falcon
#

dusk oracle
#

moto used to make the nicest device with a slide out keyboard

blissful roost

real falcon
#

blissful roost

Lovely spec... until I get to the screen.

#

Display Type IPS LCD
Size 6.8 inches, 109.8 cm2 (~83.1% screen-to-body ratio)
Resolution 720 x 1640 pixels (~263 ppi density)

#

If that's the right one, I couldn't deal with that.

real falcon
#

well never had any problem with thjat lol

blissful roost
#

Subjective, innit.

dusk oracle
#

is the pi zero 2 out yet?

blissful roost
#

Still makes me laugh.. My wife got the iPony 12 Pro Max..

#

Larger screen than the P4XL... at lower resolution. 😛

dusk oracle
#

blissful roost
#

P2XL, P4XL, P6Pro...

#

What's next? 😄

dusk oracle
#

#

@blissful roost i hope you know you broke a rule here

blissful roost

#

delicate stream
#

Slow boi

dusk oracle
#

i wonder if it will beat my bpi m2z

blissful roost
#

I might still get the original, for the sake of it.

#

But.. the new one is actually useful.

dusk oracle
#

@delicate stream remember i said i want pi zero 2

delicate stream
#

One time I under locked a Zero to 1MHz and it took over an hour to boot

blissful roost
#

hahaha

dusk oracle
#

so nice to feel heard

delicate stream
#

It was only a matter of time

dusk oracle
#

@delicate stream how even

blissful roost
#

And I thought a Z80 was painful at 4MHz

dusk oracle
#

ahh my z80 those were great imes

delicate stream
dusk oracle
#

my mind was so young

blissful roost
#

Of course, being limited to whatever fits on the ROM helps keep the boot time down.

delicate stream
#

Same as overclocking

dusk oracle
#

i have never tried going down in speed

blissful roost
#

Indeed

delicate stream
#

Generally you wouldn't, lol

blissful roost
#

quartz wren
#

why does discord just like

#

not show previews sometimes?

stoic mesa
#

they show previews from "trusted" sites, iirc

quartz wren
#

it's a mixed bag with imgur from what I've seen

#

they usually show it

#

but when they don't

#

sometimes it gets fixed by adding a space or a newline at the end

#

which is why it's confusing

blissful roost
dusk oracle
#

@quartz wren i recently found my DNS is a constant target

quartz wren
#

It's dark, cold, and rainy...

#

One thing I do miss about Florida is the more consistent sunrise time throughout the year

Soon coffee tho

delicate stream

My body is not built for it...

F

quartz wren
#

I like bad weather if I don't have to be in it. If I can watch safely from an insulated and regulated box.

#

Because if you go to extremes of insulated and regulated boxes for survival of environmental factors, having that on earth is nothing in comparison to the bad weather you'll have in a space colony

#

And that's what I'm gearing towards.

#

No clue if any of that makes sense I still haven't finished making coffee so brain is still cycling for a boot device in bios

#

Booting from local drive C:\offee
