There’s a nice “Adam Ruins Everything” episode about this

#

Unless it’s a bug based meal company

delicate stream
#

I don't think anyone is gonna eat mosquitoes

tardy badger
#

Some people might lol

delicate stream
#

Crazy people, lol

tardy badger
#

People eat weird bugs all the time

#

Some cultures, bugs are quite the delicacy

jovial path
#

I never ate then, it is disgusting.

delicate stream
#

Disgusting?

#

I don't want to eat bugs either, lol

jovial path
# tardy badger Some cultures, bugs are quite the delicacy

I respect these people.Oh... Let me tell you, I remember! There is a rain season in small cities in my state that people collect a bug called "Tanajura" and they ate them. A colleague offered me when I was a kid, I think ,but I could not eat it because it looked disgusting.I'll never eat this thing. Ever.

tardy badger
#

Ew

#

I have a slight bug phobia

#

When they’re alive that is

#

If they are dead not a problem

#

Or if they are contained where there is distance between me and them or they can’t fly at me or hurt me

#

I flinch at the slightest buzzing of wings if something is flying around my head

jovial path
#

I took out the photo because those insects were giving me freaks.

honest jolt
#

Some animals and pets eat bugs (idk if this has been mentioned before)

delicate stream
#

I mean, yeah, people do eat bugs... But now all kinds and all of them

I got a Pi-Top [4] and haven't done anything with it yet... partly because of the weird power requirements

median viper

@delicate stream I got Ubuntu-mate working on it, with VS-Code and miniconda

delicate stream
median viper
#

@delicate stream yeah it crashes on big datasets but I reduced my dataset to program the logic which is fine

delicate stream
#

Gotta keep projects small for Pi XD

median viper
#

Well they gave me an algorithm dataset of 10,000 rows and it crashes the pi

delicate stream
#

oop

median viper

So I reduced it to 100 rows just to program

#

I wish I could make crazy fakes like those. It's super impressive how they look like real cards, fans spin, things light up..

late fulcrum
#

It's similar to building movie props: it just has to look good, which often boils down to exactly that: some motion from spinning fans, a few LEDs, etc.

delicate stream
#

He has a lot of fine detail, too -- those look like he sent off to have a PCB made and then soldered the parts on

#

But yeah, def like movie props, it's all about the impression, no matter how much is being held together with paperclips, gum, and hopes and dreams in the background

late fulcrum
#

Oh, I've been known to have custom PCBs made and populate them to make movie props (and I'll do it again)

blissful roost
#

Think, McFly.. Think!

delicate stream
#

That's a little different, still actually a real working thing XD I mean, aside from time travel

#

[assuming it's all just for show]

late fulcrum
delicate stream
#

Mmmm

#

I'm trying to design what I think Loki's scepter would look like if it were made with Stark tech

late fulcrum
#

Awesome! I did a last minute Loki cosplay for a local theater, and whomped up a completely random sceptre. It looked neat, and most people liked it, but some folks were unhappy it was completely wrong.

#

I went down into the basement and took a pic so you can see it. The orb can light up with a constellation of LED lights, but I didn't put batteries in it for the pic. Handle is a pool noodle with a PVC pipe in it for additional rigidness. Angular piece is just foam board spray painted silver. The paint partially dissolved the foam, which gave an unintentional rough look to it that I find appealing.

#

Oh, I do have a pic of it lit

delicate stream
#

I've got glass bits I'm going to use to make a glowy bit, NeoPixels to animate it... Only have a couple days left DX

late fulcrum
#

I know that feel. That sceptre was thrown together in a few hours. The flux capacitor was a one-day build. The time circuits, however, were an on-and-off project for years.

delicate stream
#

I also need to print up some gauntlets... I was originally just gonna be Iron Man, but decided a Loki variant would be more topical and easier, since it isn't a full suit

#

Probably just gonna have an Arc Reactor chest piece, gauntlets, maybe thruster boots, mask/crown, and scepter

#

Scepter... Sceptre....

late fulcrum
#

I like it! I made an Arc Reactor out of a stick on LED light and a needle holder once.

delicate stream
#

Hehe

#

Going to try to get an Asgardian vibe

late fulcrum
#

Check out these instant gauntlets 🙂

delicate stream

Too many fingers :P

late fulcrum

That was a last minute hack. Now I'm making more authentic ones.

late fulcrum
#

Like many costumers, I have a real fondness for PVC pipe.

delicate stream
#

Is there anything you can't do with PVC?

late fulcrum

While it seems like it would be great for a weatherproof antenna housing, it turns out PVC tends to absorb RF energy.

More like if Asgard had a queen, who then fell in love with Howard Stark, who brought him to Asgard with her, he starts developing tech like what Tony did in the MCU to mix Asgardian magic/tech and human technology, then they find Loki and raise him to use that magic/tech combo, and he makes Iron Man like things. JavaScript is fast like C++ but it’s not multithreaded

late fulcrum

Java is a compiled language, and is fast like C++. Javascript is an interpreted language, and is, of course, slower.

wooden schooner
#

there are very performant JS runtimes, just as there would be very performant Foo runtimes for any language Foo that had that amount of market share

#

Facebook created an extremely performant PHP VM so that they wouldn't have to rewrite their entire codebase. Then they designed a language that was basically Java but was also backward compatible with ordinary PHP

median viper
#

Let’s just break this down into logical statements. 1. Java outperforms JavaScript in GPU programming [T/F]? 2. O [n] time complexity is incoherent when looking at the same algorithm in different languages [T/F]. Ok…

wooden schooner
#
  1. performance is a property of the program + runtime pair, not just the language
  2. not sure what you're asking
delicate stream

I'm sure you're saying something coherent and true, with implicit context that I don't have. I probably shouldn't have been so normative above when I stated "X is not a coherent concept," it's perhaps more that "I don't have the implicit context necessary to understand that statement"

tardy badger
#

You can do graphics in Java

#

JavaFX, Android relies heavily on Java driven graphics

delicate stream
#

You can do graphics in anything if you're crazy enough

median viper
#

From what I have been told [Dr. zhang@Winston-Salem Stste] for stand-alone runtime C++ is the GPU programming language. For anything that is not a standalone app do not use java or C# use webGL with Maya that what’s I was told

#

WebGL is JavaScript

tardy badger
#

That would still be a matter of opinion though

median viper
#

The article I linked surmised with the build times witth what she was saying it happened to coincide

#

With the O[n] time derivatives

tardy badger
#

I went to NC A&T and I could find plenty of professors with opinions otherwise.

#

And performance is heavily based on the system something is running on

median viper
#

I went to NC A&T too but I didn’t study computer science I was at JSNN and I bombed it hehe

tardy badger
#

Another factor to consider is that JS is very resource heavy

median viper
#

Discord is written in Js

tardy badger
#

It often requires a much higher resource load than other languages

#

And discord uses a lot of memory

median viper
#

Microsoft teams, slack, and

tardy badger
#

I often have to close my discord desktop apps because they use a lot of resources

median viper
#

How much ram you have?

tardy badger
#

16GB

#

Which is more than fine

#

Discord surprisingly uses more RAM than chrome

#

Gmail web client uses significant amounts of RAM

#

A single gmail web page can use as much as 1GB even idle

#

Whereas local mail clients performing the same tasks use significantly less

median viper
#

I wonder how much money Google makes off of G-suite

#

It’s all JavaScript

tardy badger
#

Backend is LAMP though

#

Only the front end and top layer backend of gmail is Js

median viper
#

LAMP I know how to use it

#

I am learning more lucee too

#

Lucee is free now

tardy badger
#

Facebook is a php monolith

#

Dang, discord bot won’t let me insult the Facebook stack

median viper
#

Look how much money they making off of PHP

#

It’s 30% of internet traffic

tardy badger
#

and the developers who write in PhP make a lot of money because no one wants to use the language

median viper
#

I can do it

#

I learned my first web Class that’s all I learned was XAMPP

#

But yeah JavaScript is a neccesary evil to do DOM scripting

tardy badger
#

Yeah, JavaScript is useful but it is process and resource intensive. That’s why datacenters are expanding so much

#

Also Facebook makes a lot money leasing the infrastructure it built to speed up traffic

#

Like.. they own a huge chunk of the fiber backbone of the US

median viper
#

Wow

tardy badger
#

They also own the fastest fiber corridor in the US

median viper
#

One guy from Winston-salem state got hired as facebooks North American salesperson

#

As their sales director

tardy badger
#

Nice

median viper
#

And T-Mobile and the bank employees

#

That’s all JavaScript and python

#

All the banks use JavaScript

#

I just don’t like react that much I really like electronjs

#

I have to learn react more

#

Like webworker and all that stuff

tardy badger
#

You’d be surprised that a lot of banks still use heavy C++/Java programming

#

I say this from experience

median viper
#

COBOL

tardy badger
#

Sure it’s still in there

#

But JavaScript is still mostly used on the front end

median viper
#

Yeah graphics and UI

#

I know java too

tardy badger
#

Most banks are using more robust backends that use Java, C#, and C++

median viper

Wells Fargo uses python

tardy badger

That’s why Wells Fargo’s banking services are slow 🤣

I found a great snack. Fresh homemade spaghetti sauce with lasagna noodles. You take the cooked lasagna noodle and roll it up on itself and dip it into your sauce. Yum.

I explained something to my friend preceding it with "to put it really basically for you:"

#

And he told me it's actually "basic", not "basically"

#

Who is right?

#

"To put it really basic for you" does not sound right

delicate stream
#

Neither sounds right, either "basically, explanation" or "to put it simply, explanation" sounds right

late fulcrum
#

I read "basic" as an adjective and "basically" as an adverb

delicate stream
#

"To make it basic for you" sounds better

#

or "To make it really basic for you"

#

But language is also subjective, and shifts, and the most important thing is that you're understood

#

I only correct someone if they're nowhere near any structure of grammar I'm familiar with

jovial path
late fulcrum
#

I would expect something like "basicamente" 🙂

#

I remember in one of Richard Feynman's books, he explained about lecturing in Brazil. He would lecture in his fairly poor Portuguese, but the students didn't have trouble understanding him, as native speakers have little trouble getting around awkward usages. Similarly, they would ask their questions in English, for similar reasons. As a bonus, they'd all get some language practice in.

#

They would end up using simple phrases like "goes up a little" instead of hunting for exactly the right words for "increases slightly", which works just fine.

delicate stream
#

Mhmm, precise wording isn't critical to understanding. There are many ways to say the same thing, particularly in English, and while some don't sound right, they get the idea across

“Your package is out for delivery”

My UPS guy is more predictable than any other courier service so I always try to receive a shipment only via UPS ground.

Once in a while it's 2 or 2:30 p.m. and every so often before 10:45 a.m. but not often.

Usually 11:00 a.m. to maybe 12:59 p.m.

And the telemetry update is fast. Within 2-5 minutes I'd say.

could be even sooner.
