"The author object follows the structure of the user object, but is only a valid user in the case where the message is generated by a user or bot user. If the message is generated by a webhook, the author object corresponds to the webhook's id, username, and avatar. You can tell if a message is generated by a webhook by checking for the webhook_id on the message object."

grave crest
#

So....either my macbook is finally starting to go on the fritz....or there's something seriously wrong.

I closed the lid on the google "blank page"....and about 2 minutes later, it opened the plex page for my plex server, and jumped to the crime movies folder I have....and started to play reservoir dogs.

while the lid was closed.

#

I've also noticed several times after opening the lid, something was clicked -- like a note in Google Keep, or a random webpage loaded (like the trackpad went on the fritz)

#

but today's Reservoir Dogs scared the poodle outta me, since my speakers were still connected.

proven olive
#

@grave crest I've had a laptop do similar before. Basically, it was the track pad becoming super sensitive and going berserk when the lid was closed.

grave crest
#

I've tried telling it that everything was allright...not to panic....but I think it's secretly reading russian classic literature when I'm not looking.

#

Or it was reading Camus and having an existentialistic crisis.

#

"Does it really matter that I'm a trackpad?"

dusty citrus
#

My thumb invariably touches the trackpad when I'm typing, unless the trackpad is situated off to one side (as on the Logitech K400 keyboard).
So I often disable it, when using the laptop as a laptop (somewhat rare; I use it as a desktop, mostly).
I think I've found two different ways to disable the trackpad.

grave crest
#

Eh, I've had this machine since late-2013. If this is the worst that is happening to it, I really can't complain.

#

In terms of raw power, it's more than sufficient for anything I throw at it for a daily driver.

dusty citrus
#

In Linux it is usually possible to disable the PC speaker by unloading the kernel module, or blacklisting it so that it never loads in the first place.
On my microwave oven, however, a pair of side-cutters was required to silence itt. ;)

#
 $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nobeep.conf
blacklist pcspkr
#

It takes a lot more effort to nail down all the ways the computer can beep at you, if you do not disable this kernel module.

OTOH, disabling the module is so effective, I've forgotten all the things that needed to be done, otherwise, to avoid beeps.

#

I don't think I've seen a Canadian coin in, like, three years or more. That's astonishing.
There was always a certain amount of it given as change by mistake.

There are ways to cough unlock features on the Rigol. I'll leave that to you and Mr. Google to figure out.

The Saleae -- It went from $479 to $700. Ooph.

https://blog.saleae.com/pricing-update/

#

There are also Saleae clones that spoof a valid Saleae so they can use the same absolutely gorgeous UI.

That's a very gray area...as it doesn't compensate the creators for their commercial product.

fluid forum
#

omg it's so warm out

#

it's nearly 18c

karmic kite
#

Whats the price and condition @grave crest

grave crest
#

@karmic kite Not too sure on the price - less than list of $500. Possibly as much as 30-50% off that, depending on the sales presented at the time. And the condition is brand new, sealed.

karmic kite
#

If I'm not mistaken there going for more then that in CAD

#

500 USD = 640 CAD. So for here it sounds about the going rate

grave crest
#

If things work out, I might be able to get it for $250-350 USD + 7% taxes (can't dodge feeding the Governor).

karmic kite
#

Ah Uncle Sam likes his fair share. But that doesn't sound like a bad deal at all. blades and battery included?

grave crest
#

I'd assume so, as it's a factory sealed retail box.

#

I'm not well-versed in drones. I'm not exactly pinching pennies, so I don't mind springing for a little bit more in cost if it'll net me a worthwhile performance gain. But common sense tells me, even being totally ignorant, that a DJI Phantom for $250-350 isn't bad. Especially on the $250 side of that.

karmic kite
#

The biggest thing is for a new pilot batteries and blades tend to be the biggest lament. unless you're flying somewhere with out obstructions. and battery life is usually only about 20 minutes on the phantom 3 iirc.

#

So for 250 that sounds like a decent deal to me

grave crest
#

Just spoke with a friend who works at the place...they have a few current sales which stack.... $286 out the door.

#

Hmm. It's tempting.

karmic kite
#

Other thing to note with the phantom 3's if you fly in a no fly zone (Here its 9km from an airport or hospital) it'll cut power to the motors

#

I've seen more then one drone needing surgery because of it

grave crest
#

Oh really? That's programmed into its GPS?

cursive pike
#

Resistance is futile.

karmic kite
#

@grave crest indeed

#

you can override it, but 1) voids warranty 2) causes backlog in airports

grave crest
#

Yeah, well...I have no intention of causing that. There are some old "airports" in rural PA that might still show up on GPS maps, but they're nothing more than an abandoned cleared field. Being within 5 miles of them is a non-issue. But as always, play nicely with the law kids 😃

covert spire
#

I usually try not to Map those

#

Although, some tend to be crop duster “airports”

#

Really, to Map each rural airport, it really is per one to check on

#

As for that being said, I know that has been hot topic to some drone fans in rural areas, as you normally just see open land, but sometimes has no fly zones

#

I’ll still to RC planes

#

Same fly zone restrictions (for most part in rural)

karmic kite
#

I mostly use planes as well, but for heavy lift we need a decent runway

fluid forum
#

What about heavy lift helicopters? Do cranes strapped to gas cans with roters

#

Okay that's not RC, but it's sorta on topic.

covert spire
#

Way random, Hahahahahahaha!

#

Any RC plane with good bit weight to it needs fairly long enough run way, in rural, there’s plenty of clearings you can find that works

#

Although, I do know of RC air field place in North Carolina

#

I think Meccano is referring to gas powered RC planes that have bit of stronger frame, I got looking into RC bomber as I like WWII models, and a bomber can be used for candy drop

karmic kite

Balsa and sitka is the way to go

covert spire
#

Trying to calculate if you can push for 28 lbs?

karmic kite
#

By our competition carbon fibre isn't allowed but for personal use it could be fun

#

the birds I've seen with carbon fibre only usually use it for the fuselage and have the wings and tail out of balsa

covert spire
#

The ones I seen use carbon fiber is large scale warbirds, for quick connect wings

#

Otherwise it’s just balsa frame

#

They use fiberglass for fuselage

#

That is kit I would like to use for candy drop

#

Tho, it may more do like 2 lbs of candy

karmic kite
#

Those landing gears make me nervous but I've seen quite a few of those at the flying field!

#

They're pretty neat!

#

I kinda wanna play with a dual motor/prop plane and remove the rudder. IE. control the yaw with motor differential

covert spire
#

That sounds like swapping out the controller board to play with motor drive

#

Or being able to at least have each motor on different channel

#

Then 2 throttle sticks for them

karmic kite
#

Most controllers support channel mixing, might need to get creative and swap channels around. As typically your right stick has a lot more mixing with split channels

covert spire
#

You had to mention playing with motor speeds

#

I’m not fan of small blades on Osprey tho

karmic kite
#

VTOL's need fast and small props

#

they'd need larger wings, pushing the turbulence away from the fuse in vertical flight

#

its only 5 channel??

Yea, he explained how the flight controller had most of the angles pre-programmed, so the tilt isn’t among the channels needed

I suggested before I seen the video

I still want one

karmic kite

its tempting

covert spire
#

Just the blades seem weird compared to real Osprey

#

But you know there is the temptation of having both vertical & horizontal flight

#

Why have choice?

#

Both!

karmic kite
#

Gyros and Flight Stablizers are usually external to a reciever, so could probably get some channel mixing external baords as well

#

I have a couple cheap quad copters that are really similar

covert spire
#

May have to, to dual channel the motors on that

karmic kite
#

transistioning from vertical to horizontal is actually really easy

covert spire
#

Well, it’s matter of buying one or building one

#

In RC, it is easy

#

Especially in electric

karmic kite
#

Electric makes everything so much easier

#

Just bought a ton of new motors on sponsorship to try for next year. from 90kV up to 500kV

covert spire
#

Except flight time

#

Hahahahahahaha!

That’s a slight “Jolt”

Fair price for :

AMD Phenom II
Quadro FX580
8 GB DDR3
1 TB 7200RPM HDD
500 Watt Power Supply
PCIe USB 3.0
#

I was thinking 150$ CAD just as its still a half decent drafting station

dreamy solstice
#

in all, just from a basic guess, $800 or so

#

wait

#

which version of the phenom 2?

x4? x2 etc

the gpu is about $100

the ram would be about $80

oh

karmic kite

x4 phenom

dreamy solstice

yeah, the cpu would be about $30

the hdd would be about $50

the pcie usb card might be around $30

Not as far as Im aware, I know your getting a new card soon but have you considered a usb bluetooth?

dreamy solstice
#

from my experience, dongles dont last long

#

I had a DESKTOP

karmic kite

Bluetooth in general with peripherals doesnt typically last long imho.

dreamy solstice

it was a wifi dongle, and it ended up snapped in half

karmic kite

dreamy solstice

it got kicked

it was also manufactured with a crooked connector

dongles are also slow

It’s a magnetic charging cable that can universally charge Micro USB, Lightning, and USB C. Unlike competitors, they offer a lifetime warranty to replace any damage whatsoever. I already use a cable daily for charging a phone and plan to use Micro USB tips to charge my Adafruit projects. The cable is Quick Charge 3.0 compatible and makes plugging electronics in easier. It seems I'm so musically challenged, I have a hard time playing the radio. Literally.

Anyone use CubicSDR on MacOS? I can't seem to get any "click & drag" functionality to work. It clicks & drags, but only for a fraction of a second (as if I lifted the mouse button really quickly, but I didn't). If I move the click & drag fast, I can get a larger movement...but still, only for a brief moment.

So I figure I'd ask if anyone else has the same complication. I'm currently running Sierra (haven't upgraded to High Sierra yet -- maybe that's the issue?)

@dreamy solstice Yes. I use TeamViewer just in the same fashion. The Virtual Machine is just a windows or Linux install -- it has virtually no idea it is not "real". So you give it an IP address, etc just like a real bare-metal computer....and you install the software you need.

As long as there is network connectivity between the VM and the computer you're using, you're golden.

if I overclock my raspberry pi 2(700 mhz- 1ghz) if I clock it to 1ghz, could it run minecraft java with optifine?

#

for instance, the latest snapshots of 1.13 perform very well compared to other versions due to being optimized,,, finally.

A little late to this but @sleek urchin I've put my keyboard in the dishwasher before (top rack) to clean it. Just make sure it's completely dry before plugging it in.

sleek urchin

heh, didn't want to risk it

early production Model Ms are hard to replace

plush musk

Yeah, with that keyboard I can understand.

sleek urchin

plus, if water gets between the front plate and the back plate, it gets trapped in the membranes

would then have to pop all the plastic rivets (which, granted, break anyways due to age)and replace them

@sleek urchin , approx. what year was it manufactured? Is it PS/2 interface?

sleek urchin

AT cable, actually, but that's electrically the same

18 FEB 86 specifically for the manufacture date, according to the label on the bottom

OK, was wondering if these were what we had in my lab in grad school, but I think this is ~5 years older. We had a few IBM RS/6000 workstations and then a bunch of IBM X-station client terminals.

So, I just got a phone call from the "IRS" demanding that I pay back taxes that I owed -- exactly $4987.32 cents worth. Must pay right now. Or they'd call my local police department to have the sheriff arrest me for intentionally defrauding the government.

Of course it was a scam. It was a glorious 47 minutes I wasted on the phone with them -- if they were talking to me, they weren't trying to intimidate someone else. And make no mistake, they were rather brutish and mean, yelling at me, bullying me, threatening me. All water off a duck's back 🦆.

But I wanted to use this as an opportunity to ask a favor of everyone -- remind your family, your loved ones, your grandmas and grandpas -- that the IRS will never call you. [All of their correspondence is officially done via postal mail].

Same goes for "you have a virus" scams from people falsely claiming to be "Microsoft", "Dell", etc. They'll never cold call you claiming something is wrong.

fluid forum

I have been getting callas every day on this one

I have herd reports of people getting money out of the scammers

vestal phoenix

@grave crest Bravo! I like to top off those scam conversations by asking "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"

#

Getting on the Do not call registry leads to more calls.

fluid forum
#

it's soposed to reduce them, thing is they are on the hook for $1,500 per call if they call you

grave crest

I think the law is the last thing the IRS scammers are thinking about -- between fraud, impersonating a federal agent, and being unable to sleep at night for stealing from poor ol' granny.

@unkempt shoal When it comes down to it, it's their call because they're writing the cheques.

unkempt shoal

But even if there was a misunderstanding, and by clearing it up

#

can we still move forward positivel?

cursive pike

If you end it cleanly and professionally, they might come back to you later for more work. Who knows.

It's possible, yes. But from what you've said, I'd go in assuming it'll be wrapped up.

If so, shake hands and move on.

as of 2018, is 8gb of ram enough for, modern software needs?

pure topaz
#

Yeah, will do most things just fine, as long as you are not doing extreme thing such as rendering and like machine learning

#

or 100 google chrome tabs

sleek urchin
#

I'd say 8GB is a perfectly fine baseline for long term relevance

pure topaz
#

LTT did a video on just that

sleek urchin
#

if you open 300 tabs...

#

well, that's just bad coding on chrome's part

pure topaz
#

I think it is because chrome seperates each tab into their own enviroment

#

so it keeps malicious code away from other tabs memory

sleek urchin
#

I ended up getting some more RAM and bumping my PC up to 16GB.

#

but then, I do way more than just game

grave crest
#

8gb is fine for me, unless you are doing complex tasks for graphics/video, massive number crunching, virtualization, etc. For a non-technical college curriculum, high school, or casual use machine, it'll be perfectly fine.

Though, you cant do any harm going to 16gb - especially if this is a new purchase you plan on using 2-5 years.

sleek urchin
#

heh, this was an older one, but I always figured it was a reasonable upgrade path

#

just didn't think it'd cost as much as it did at this point...

grave crest
#

Ram prices, like ssd prices and graphics card, have been rather high - each for various reasons

sleek urchin
#

add to that passive component prices

#

=p

#

but yeah, 16GB, was a nice upgrade

#

but then, I've never been one to constantly leave dozens and dozens of browser tabs open

hey, so if I were to connect an ipad to a computer via a lightning cable, could I set up a usb ethernet connection and control the pc using the ipad, over the lightning cable?

sleek urchin

doubt it, apple wouldn't allow for it most likely

grave crest
#

I don't think you can do that -- the closest I could suggest would be to install teamviewer (or a similar remote control program) on the computer, and the iOS compatible client on the tablet. I know for sure teamviewer has compatibility for iOS->computer, as I use that frequently.

dreamy solstice

I was wondering if there's means of doing that over a wired connection

@willow anvil 6??

#

dont

#

6*35 is about 210, you can get a server off ebay for about 250-300 thats probably much better

#

or just rent something in the cloud

willow anvil
#

I mean for fun mostly

sharp tartan
#

expensive fun project

willow anvil
#

true

sharp tartan
#

i wouldnt

willow anvil

but I have access to a free 200mbps and 50mbps upload line

and free power

sharp tartan

then buy a 2u style server

the cloud is not secure

barren hemlock

*cores

sharp tartan

not in all cases

willow anvil

I suppose, but I also use the pi for a lot of random other stuff

sharp tartan

you can get pretty cheap dedicated servers nowadays

willow anvil
#

hosting game servers mostly

sharp tartan
#

i would get a 2u style server still

#

but you do you

willow anvil
#

I mean I have cloud stuff already

sharp tartan
#

so whats the reason for this?

willow anvil
#

they have trouble hosting game servers

sharp tartan
#

who do you use

#

almost all cloud platforms will let you upgrade

willow anvil
#

aws

#

but the costs get out of control

sharp tartan
#

their serverless platform?

willow anvil
#

standard EC2

sharp tartan
#

hmm, never used, my digitalocean droplet has always been fine, and my friend used to run a server hosting company and used ovh dedicated servers

willow anvil
#

droplets for hosting games?

sharp tartan
#

why not? what game is it

willow anvil
#

starbound, KSP with a windows instance, etc

#

OpenTTD

sharp tartan
#

maybe that could help?

willow anvil
#

yeah

#

I have one running on an old pi

#

it does fine

#

but AWS struggled

sharp tartan
#

oh

#

that seems like a good option then, to host at home

#

what about just buying a server instead of many pis?

willow anvil
#

pi's are smaller

#

and more customizable, at least so it feels like

sharp tartan
#

pi's are relatively overpirced

willow anvil
#

they do feel as such

#

so buying old model 3 b's are on the cheap

#

since people are selling for then new ones

sharp tartan
#

you do you

willow anvil
karmic kite

dusty citrus
#

why is there no bots in an engineering server?

dreamy solstice
#

probably because it's either not that great of a server, or they have no need for bots

#

if a server has no bots, it's either young, poorly developed, or lacks the need for bots

dusty citrus
#

bots are fun and fun is important so bots are a must.
