ms!eval bot.sendMessage({to:channelID,message:"Who likes bot evals and cool features?"})
@mint trellis I wouldn't expose an eval function because it is a security hole. Look up SQL injection and xss for similar attacks.
eh it's only accessible by me @stuck moth
it checks your username?
ms!eval bot.sendMessage({to:channelID,message:"Who likes bot evals and cool features?"})
Only bot devs can access eval
ah nice
Anyone know a good way to track ePackages?
@mint trellis
"The author object follows the structure of the user object, but is only a valid user in the case where the message is generated by a user or bot user. If the message is generated by a webhook, the author object corresponds to the webhook's id, username, and avatar. You can tell if a message is generated by a webhook by checking for the webhook_id on the message object."
Gotta add a check for webhook ID else it can spoofed
@somber summit depends on the shipping company
China EMS, I think.
Most tracking systems I've seen from china are unreliable at best
They.... track through china, then go on a boat. Which takes a significant amount of time.
Then they get on via USPS.
I've had luck tracking them the whole way via USPS
Ah they don't track this side of the 49th
Might have to wait for tracking, ordered the 14th but 8-30 day shipping.
Invalid syntax. Please use ms!3D (id/search) (id/text).
Hopefully I got an early boat.
It’s a wholesale item so it ships in bulk. Either it’s on the move or it’s sitting in a shipping container.
shippers only make money if stuff is moving
I want to build an induction coil based sword, like hacksmith's proto saber....
@somber summit What did you get, and where did you purchase it from?
Dhgate, it’s like chinese eBay, shipped by seller.
He sells shoes and ships them in bulk to the continents.
400 orders, %98 rating, and trusted seller premium. Pretty good.
That %2 is just people complaining about the shipping.
Because they're used to Amazon shipping.
Out the door super speedy, super-quick shipping....
90% of stuff doesn't work like that.
There were 5 US buyer reviews so that was enough for me to go for it.
There’s of course DHL shipping that’s stupid fast international (talking 3-8 days anywhere in the world) but it gets expensive the bigger it gets.
My experience from AliExpress: DHL/etc is absurdly expensive.
it is in the us
it seem any time I get something from China they use DHL or DHL hand off to USPS
PCBWay uses DHL for their small orders. $5 for 10 boards, $25 for shipping.
AliExpress? The smallest thing costs $50+ for DHL/UPS/FedEx/TNT
Basically anything that isn't "Super duper slow"
DHL is by far my favourite, as they actually keep to timelines, and customs isn't outrageous even though the shipping is a few dollars more
EX. shipping with DHL for 3 motors, was 40$ of shipping with 17$ duties whereas UPS one motor was 10$ shipping but 95$ of duties.
(Of the same motor)

No wonder this 54GB rsync is taking forever. ;)
Stopped rsync for 10 mins to let it cool down. Restarted rsync -- the automated temperature monitoring did its job. Did not have to reboot or do any maintenance -- machine kept itself safe, and kept running just fine. ;)

@dusty citrus I see the temperature throttling occasionally on my Ubuntu Mac Mini - especially during large file transfers. The OS seems to handle it just fine.

No
IF you rotate it 90 degrees you short all the pins together on one side of the board. So you have that part right. ;)

@dusty citrus There is this guide https://learn.adafruit.com/stand-alone-programming-avrs-using-circuitpython/overview and note the subtle changes needed to work with a Trinket M0. Arrived from Amazon today. i may have an LED problem, but these are so nice and bright.
In the same package. I definitely have a breadboard addiction.
Saner, there was also a press and pan for making homemade corn tortillas. I finally had it with not having a reliable source of fresh corn tortillas.

I knew this day would come eventually.. I just didn't think it would be so soon....
I've had to move each LED colour to its own drawer!
You need a lab assistant. ;)
While I'm there, I decided to reorg my drawers of headers
Always good to have your drawers organized
@proven olive Everything in its place.
Indeed!
I dropped my drawers.
So....either my macbook is finally starting to go on the fritz....or there's something seriously wrong.
I closed the lid on the google "blank page"....and about 2 minutes later, it opened the plex page for my plex server, and jumped to the crime movies folder I have....and started to play reservoir dogs.
while the lid was closed.
I've also noticed several times after opening the lid, something was clicked -- like a note in Google Keep, or a random webpage loaded (like the trackpad went on the fritz)
but today's Reservoir Dogs scared the poodle outta me, since my speakers were still connected.
@grave crest I've had a laptop do similar before. Basically, it was the track pad becoming super sensitive and going berserk when the lid was closed.
I've tried telling it that everything was allright...not to panic....but I think it's secretly reading russian classic literature when I'm not looking.
Or it was reading Camus and having an existentialistic crisis.
"Does it really matter that I'm a trackpad?"
My thumb invariably touches the trackpad when I'm typing, unless the trackpad is situated off to one side (as on the Logitech K400 keyboard).
So I often disable it, when using the laptop as a laptop (somewhat rare; I use it as a desktop, mostly).
I think I've found two different ways to disable the trackpad.
Eh, I've had this machine since late-2013. If this is the worst that is happening to it, I really can't complain.
In terms of raw power, it's more than sufficient for anything I throw at it for a daily driver.
In Linux it is usually possible to disable the PC speaker by unloading the kernel module, or blacklisting it so that it never loads in the first place.
On my microwave oven, however, a pair of side-cutters was required to silence itt. ;)
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nobeep.conf
blacklist pcspkr
It takes a lot more effort to nail down all the ways the computer can beep at you, if you do not disable this kernel module.
OTOH, disabling the module is so effective, I've forgotten all the things that needed to be done, otherwise, to avoid beeps.
I don't think I've seen a Canadian coin in, like, three years or more. That's astonishing.
There was always a certain amount of it given as change by mistake.
@cursive pike How much did you get them for...?
@tender nimbus which? The LEDs, Breadboars, or Tortilla tools?
LEDs and Breadboard
$20 for the LEDs (90 of each colour), $11.50 for the 3 breadboards. All $ CDN.
OH...!
That not a bad price

my laptop restarts every time I shut the lid
it started doing this ever since I installed a UEFI hard drive into it
is there any way to fix this?
it's got something to do with the bios, but I dont know how to fix it
I have tried reverting the bios to default settings
is your bios up-to-date?
yes
and nevermind
I changed the power settings
closing the lid does absolutely nothing but turn off the screen now

@viral spruce What were the symptoms? I have one that isn't backlighting... from what I have been able to ascertain it works... just balck screen.
@cursive pike there was a faint hum coming from the top right side of the screen (I have REALLY sensitive hearing). whenever I maxed it the brightness out, it'd black out until I turned it back down

@viral spruce OK, I'm pretty sure my problem is the backlight.

I think I've reached the limit of my patience/frustration with bitscope. I need a real 'scope & logic analyzer.
Unless I can find some docs that have real information in them.
Rigol + Salae?
(this one...hurts. Right after christmas, they increased the price by several hundred dollars.) And they killed their lowest end non-pro 4 port version too.
There are ways to cough unlock features on the Rigol. I'll leave that to you and Mr. Google to figure out.
Official way is to buy licenses from Rigol, which we should all do to support the manufacturer.
The Saleae -- It went from $479 to $700. Ooph.
It was a difficult decision, but we ultimately (and begrudgingly) decided that to grow as a company and to develop the products we - and our customers - want, we need to increase prices. Here are the new prices: Logic 8 $399 ...
There are also Saleae clones that spoof a valid Saleae so they can use the same absolutely gorgeous UI.
That's a very gray area...as it doesn't compensate the creators for their commercial product.
Also, you're now adding in another element of uncertainty -- is it an issue with a cheaply made diagnostic tool? or is it actually an issue with your circuit?
@grave crest The DS1054Z. That's what I was just looking at.
1054Z is probably still the best bang-for-the-buck, before unlocking any features. and it's amazing after you unlock them.
4 channel? yes please.
Mr. SEM -- Adam -- uses that very model for his troubleshooting on his electronic microscopes. That kinda sold me on it.
Looks good. Once I have income stablized I'll get one.
And don't forget to use the adafruit discount code on it.
If you are a member of the EEVblog forums, I think they have a discount code for their reseller of choice, tequipment.
Whatever you do, buy from a reputable seller (Adafruit, digikey, tequipment, etc). There are many places that'll charge a few dollars less, but give you the China-version which carries absolutely no US warranty.
Hmm.. I see it on Amazon.ca for about the same amount but in CDN.
Interesting... I don't know if I'd be getting the US warrentee anyway... not being in the US afterall.
Good question -- TEquipment might be a canada reseller? I can't say for sure.
Just be mindful -- the chinese versions aren't even setup for English.
@cursive pike I'd start with the saleae personally too

I got mine black friday 2017 from Sparkfun.
Bright red Saleae Logic Pro 8 w/ 20% off...came out to $384. Now they're $700. When I saw the new price, I think I nearly fainted.
The Logic 8....old price was $220. Now they're $400. That's practically doubled. Don't get me wrong, they're good devices. But wow, if you didn't get lucky earlier....and if you don't qualify for the Student/Startup pricing....oofph.
Yeah, that's just rough
Anyone here familiar with drones (DJI's offerings)....or could point me in the direction of the right place to ask questions? I have an opportunity to get a DJI Phantom 3 Standard (an older-ish model) brand new, potentially at a discount.
Need to get some idea what a good vs great price is on that model....and if it's even worth looking at with the offerings out there today.
Whats the price and condition @grave crest
@karmic kite Not too sure on the price - less than list of $500. Possibly as much as 30-50% off that, depending on the sales presented at the time. And the condition is brand new, sealed.
If I'm not mistaken there going for more then that in CAD
500 USD = 640 CAD. So for here it sounds about the going rate
If things work out, I might be able to get it for $250-350 USD + 7% taxes (can't dodge feeding the Governor).
Ah Uncle Sam likes his fair share. But that doesn't sound like a bad deal at all. blades and battery included?
I'd assume so, as it's a factory sealed retail box.
I'm not well-versed in drones. I'm not exactly pinching pennies, so I don't mind springing for a little bit more in cost if it'll net me a worthwhile performance gain. But common sense tells me, even being totally ignorant, that a DJI Phantom for $250-350 isn't bad. Especially on the $250 side of that.
The biggest thing is for a new pilot batteries and blades tend to be the biggest lament. unless you're flying somewhere with out obstructions. and battery life is usually only about 20 minutes on the phantom 3 iirc.
So for 250 that sounds like a decent deal to me
Just spoke with a friend who works at the place...they have a few current sales which stack.... $286 out the door.
Hmm. It's tempting.
Other thing to note with the phantom 3's if you fly in a no fly zone (Here its 9km from an airport or hospital) it'll cut power to the motors
I've seen more then one drone needing surgery because of it
Oh really? That's programmed into its GPS?
@grave crest indeed
you can override it, but 1) voids warranty 2) causes backlog in airports
Yeah, well...I have no intention of causing that. There are some old "airports" in rural PA that might still show up on GPS maps, but they're nothing more than an abandoned cleared field. Being within 5 miles of them is a non-issue. But as always, play nicely with the law kids 😃
I usually try not to Map those
Although, some tend to be crop duster “airports”
Really, to Map each rural airport, it really is per one to check on
As for that being said, I know that has been hot topic to some drone fans in rural areas, as you normally just see open land, but sometimes has no fly zones
I’ll still to RC planes
Same fly zone restrictions (for most part in rural)
I mostly use planes as well, but for heavy lift we need a decent runway
What about heavy lift helicopters? Do cranes strapped to gas cans with roters
Okay that's not RC, but it's sorta on topic.
Way random, Hahahahahahaha!
Any RC plane with good bit weight to it needs fairly long enough run way, in rural, there’s plenty of clearings you can find that works
Although, I do know of RC air field place in North Carolina
I think Meccano is referring to gas powered RC planes that have bit of stronger frame, I got looking into RC bomber as I like WWII models, and a bomber can be used for candy drop
It's late, it took me to long to remember it was RC not actual...
Only 1 am
Heavy Lift is just nuts in that regard
And just taken me 20 times checking clocks to notice
True and my code is still broken so it must not be that rate
Yea, 20 lbs of candy payload affects a lot
Well in the big stuff it's like 20 tons
I have seen one once
But as soon as I had funds, I couldn’t find it again
Ouch
Yea . . .
Special order?
I'm the deets, I'll ask local for you
Well, right now I blown my funds again . . .
Dm
Ah
lol you should probanly come up with a name 😃
@covert spire @fluid forum saeaerodesign is the competition. 1000W electric motor for heavy lift. We were able to stable carry 22 pounds with a 10 pound bird
Noice
And as for helicopter heavy carry a6 motor quadcopter named franken stein
Yea, the kit I want is more like 30 lbs
Hahahahahahaha!
Which isn’t good considering it’s mostly foam
Balsa and sitka is the way to go
Not carbon fiber tubes?
We've tried that but for sake of structure it doesnt hold up as the wings are a moment arm and carbon doesnt like to bend
Ah
Maybe if we reinforce a carbon wrap with a sitka frame...
Trying to calculate if you can push for 28 lbs?
By our competition carbon fibre isn't allowed but for personal use it could be fun
the birds I've seen with carbon fibre only usually use it for the fuselage and have the wings and tail out of balsa
The ones I seen use carbon fiber is large scale warbirds, for quick connect wings
Otherwise it’s just balsa frame
They use fiberglass for fuselage
http://www.bananahobby.com/2286.html This video will speak for itself. Almost IMAA legal at 79" wingspan! Flight performance is amazing and to see where this...
That is kit I would like to use for candy drop
Tho, it may more do like 2 lbs of candy
Those landing gears make me nervous but I've seen quite a few of those at the flying field!
They're pretty neat!
I kinda wanna play with a dual motor/prop plane and remove the rudder. IE. control the yaw with motor differential
That sounds like swapping out the controller board to play with motor drive
Or being able to at least have each motor on different channel
Then 2 throttle sticks for them
This is the new Coast Guard Edition of the popular VTOL V-22 Osprey! The first ARF on the market with true VTOL (Vertical Take OFF/Landing) capabilities! In ...
Most controllers support channel mixing, might need to get creative and swap channels around. As typically your right stick has a lot more mixing with split channels
You had to mention playing with motor speeds
I’m not fan of small blades on Osprey tho
VTOL's need fast and small props
they'd need larger wings, pushing the turbulence away from the fuse in vertical flight
its only 5 channel??
Yea, he explained how the flight controller had most of the angles pre-programmed, so the tilt isn’t among the channels needed
I suggested before I seen the video
I still want one
its tempting
Just the blades seem weird compared to real Osprey
But you know there is the temptation of having both vertical & horizontal flight
Why have choice?
Both!
Gyros and Flight Stablizers are usually external to a reciever, so could probably get some channel mixing external baords as well
I have a couple cheap quad copters that are really similar
May have to, to dual channel the motors on that
transistioning from vertical to horizontal is actually really easy
Well, it’s matter of buying one or building one
In RC, it is easy
Especially in electric
Electric makes everything so much easier
Just bought a ton of new motors on sponsorship to try for next year. from 90kV up to 500kV
Well thats where heavy lift is nice, throw a fat 7Ah battery in there and go for an hour
motor kV - RPM/Volt (Dumb measurement)
huh its only a 3 cell
hey
anyone know of an affordable adapter that will give my laptop a pcie 1x slot?(no thunderbolt, my laptop doesnt have it)
because I am trying to make a solution for an egpu, that works on mpcie or expresscard34
thanks
lol
Fair price for :
AMD Phenom II
Quadro FX580
8 GB DDR3
1 TB 7200RPM HDD
500 Watt Power Supply
PCIe USB 3.0
I was thinking 150$ CAD just as its still a half decent drafting station
in all, just from a basic guess, $800 or so
wait
which version of the phenom 2?
x4? x2 etc
cause they go for about $30
the gpu is about $100
the ram would be about $80
GPU is like 20$
oh
x4 phenom
yeah, the cpu would be about $30
the hdd would be about $50
the pcie usb card might be around $30
its also depressing... this is the first computer I actually worked on and upgraded, so its about 12 years old
the psu iiiiis... around $30-50
What will you do with that pc....?
Getting rid of it, buying one brand new rig, and getting rid of 3 old ones
Hmmmm
so around $280, plus the case
So 300$ ish
yeah
I dont have any xp wid server grade things so bye....!

luckily I am working on getting an egpu for my laptop
got a pretty good radeon card
just need to hook it up to my laptop
once I get the right adapters
Ehhh... never a good experience with external GPU's
they are at least day and night better than the hd 3000
This is true
I'm sitting here staring at my I7-8700 and new RAM just patiently waiting on the MOBO to get here

oh hey, my new pcie wifi card wont arrive till either april 2-5
and I cant use a wee little bluetooth earpiece on my laptop unless I am no more than a foot away from the laptop, with the earbud perfectly pointed towards the laptop
it had like, bluetooth 2.0
the new card has 4.1
yes
for audio
cant even handle simple audio
it's not the 100mpbs router, or the 3.1 ghz core i5 in my laptop, it's the sucky wifi card that others have had issues with
some like, intel centrino wifi card from 2012
oof
what's weird is, the entire laptop is from 2012
yet it runs some stuff it shouldnt be able to run
like it runs starbound
even some big beefy desktops cry a little when they run that game

I sure hoped he retained his tag. Otherwise I'd have to talk to scott and have Andon reinstated. No way I'd take it from someone, never ask that of anyone.
Silly little thing, but still 😃

my bluetooth is so slow that my bluetooth mouse is lagging
is there anyway to fix this?
I have bluetooth 2.1
Not as far as Im aware, I know your getting a new card soon but have you considered a usb bluetooth?
from my experience, dongles dont last long
I had a DESKTOP
and the dongle died
Bluetooth in general with peripherals doesnt typically last long imho.
it was a wifi dongle, and it ended up snapped in half
Excuse the question, but user error?
it got kicked
it was also manufactured with a crooked connector
which didnt help
Ah. Cant blame one manufacturer flaw on the group. But it would be a quick upgrade
dongles are also slow
as usb is slower than pcie
I had a 76mbps wifi dongle, that couldnt even stream sd video
it was usb
Bluetooth doesnt need equivelant bandwidth of wifi
I was saying that usb tends to be slow
and if a pcie card lags on bluetooth
a usb stick probably would too
except the really good dongles
which I cant afford
@grave crest
@copper bobcat Very nifty
@grave crest That feeling when I've actually lost some capacity (or the reporting got better...). Used to say 31Wh (24 design). Now it's saying 25 (24 design).
did you know that macs can support windows?
both the software and, physical windows
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/409563999001116682/429094814005460992/574017db54691.png
this mac is supporting a window, literally
also is that netbook running linux?
@dreamy solstice aye. Linux (Arch), Android x86 (Oreo), and Windows.
cool
I wish my laptop could run linux AND windows, but virtual box doesnt want to work with any linux iso
Wat
I mean you could dual boot :P Wait WHAT? Seriously just 32bit CPU?
tried reinstalling virtualbox, updating it
didnt work, and I dont want to dual boot
I want to have both running simultaniously so I can instantly switch oses without having to reboot or anything like that
I mean that error would suggest you aren't even using a 64 bit CPU. There's also a setting for extended instructions. That might be it.
I have a 64 bit cpu
it's a core i5 2520m
I just had a thought, what if, a character on a discord rp server, joins the discord rp server that they were created in.
that'd be an interesting paradox
GPD Pocket
@grave crest little did I know the GPD was normal size and I'm just huge.
Palm a basketball? More like a spinning beach ball!
@grave crest overall I'd say worth it only if you can really find a use for it. Even I don't have a hard set use but I love electronics enough that I had to geek out on it ($450 secondhand)
If I saw this 8 years ago or so, I'd be drooling all over it.
It really is a netbook refined.
@grave crest Harks back to when I had this http://oldcomputers.net/pics/portfolio-hand.jpg
Quad core Atom (Cherrytrail)
It's not like the Atoms of old
what is the most demanding thing it can run well
It's a name now not a death sentence
I saw reviews of people playing Skyrim and Rocket League on it.
lol what?
Ultra low settings of course.
oh
Works fine for my SDR stuffs
But....for an atom with integrated graphics to even load skyrim...
One gig for every inch of screen, plus an extra for good measure.
Yep
128gb ssd emmc -- so a wee bit slow
yeah
but not a death sentence either
and that capacity is terrible
I can barely get away with a 300 gb hdd
my 500gb hdd is already filling up
What? 128 is great considering 32/64 in the related craptops
true
Also it's not really a main machine by any stretch. I still have my full laptop.
I'm just trying to think where something like that would outperform a 12" Macbook (non-pro)
Personal use case, of course.
my full laptop runs starbound at 20 fps
most laptops can only reach 15 or so on that game
I am intrigued.
Text one is a GPS module I cobbled together. Bottom is a TV tuner hooked up.
Also compatible with Thinkpad nubs
nice!
Screw that, spend the money on a Thinkpad lol
And as a DSLR controller

@grave crest re: the keyboard https://photos.app.goo.gl/KRx12ys00Qmeq4Zk1

really. They should've taken one more step and raffled off the letter ordering by a cold draw. ASDF? No let's do UBTJ there.
IBM did a good job on the Selectric keyboard. You would think that people would have respect, but they don't.

i couldn't sleep last night. total insomnia. hopefully i sleep well tonight.
i can recommend "boring documentaries" on YouTube as a sleep aid -- i finally fell asleep to a documentary on Egyptian History
@simple fable try Melatonin - safe and works
i have melatonin, but i think i might have become dependent on it. i took it for 3 nights running, and then when i didn't take it last night, i couldn't sleep. 😬
melatonin has a habit of becoming inoperative if taken too many nights in a row
Sleep cognitive behaviour therapy can work wonders as well
I find meditating helps more consistently for me -- counting breaths and reseting count if my mind wanders.
Melatonin is something that will make you somewhat dependent on it. It's useful for the occasional sleepless night, but if you use it regularly, you need it.
I've gotten very used to setting a 2 hour timer on my ipad to "stop playing", then I open twitch to a streamer playing a game.
It's not something I'm actively engaged in watching, and it turns off after I'm fast asleep so it doesn't wake me up later.
brightness on minimum, volume around 20% or so
Otherwise, I'm up all night thinking through things and can't "turn off". Put on something in the background, I'm out like an LED connected backwards. Poof.
Is advertising allowed on the forums? Nothing like an Adafruit competitor, just a useful accessory.
I don't speak for the admins here, but generally they're pretty chill about stuff like that. Use your best judgement. :)
Ask yourself -- is it relevant to electronics/topics at hand? Is it appropriate for all ages?
Thanks! Here it is: http://voltacharger.refr.cc/Giraffe
It’s a magnetic charging cable that can universally charge Micro USB, Lightning, and USB C. Unlike competitors, they offer a lifetime warranty to replace any damage whatsoever. I already use a cable daily for charging a phone and plan to use Micro USB tips to charge my Adafruit projects. The cable is Quick Charge 3.0 compatible and makes plugging electronics in easier. Plus, you won’t ever have to deal with the Micro USB locking system wearing out since you’ll never have to plug a cable in.
When your friends buy from your referral link, you get 10% of friend's purchase amount!
The link btw is a free 10% off and I get the 10%.
@proven olive If I'm not mistaken melatonin is naturally in your body and how you sleep, the supplement just gives you more of it no?
If you're taking the pills, then your body doesn't produce it as much.
Ah I see
Then you stop taking it and you have waaay less than you should
I spent nearly 22 years of my life with clinical insomnia, CBT was the only thing that really helped consistently
Sometimes bodies just don't make the stuff it should, such as insulin for diabetics
In those cases, supplements are amazing and great
in some cases yes!
It seems I'm so musically challenged, I have a hard time playing the radio. Literally.
Anyone use CubicSDR on MacOS? I can't seem to get any "click & drag" functionality to work. It clicks & drags, but only for a fraction of a second (as if I lifted the mouse button really quickly, but I didn't). If I move the click & drag fast, I can get a larger movement...but still, only for a brief moment.
So I figure I'd ask if anyone else has the same complication. I'm currently running Sierra (haven't upgraded to High Sierra yet -- maybe that's the issue?)
@grave crest are you using an actual computer mouse? not the track pad
@barren hemlock I used both, same result.
What program are you using?
one sec
Try sdr console v3
I have not had much problem with my RTL dongle with this program
That appears to be for Windows, is it not?
I really don't use software like that, it's usually a nightmare of compatibility & fit n' finish issues.
Do you have an old windows computer?
is there a way to remote control a virtual machine using vnc?
and only that virtual machine?
@dreamy solstice Yes. I use TeamViewer just in the same fashion. The Virtual Machine is just a windows or Linux install -- it has virtually no idea it is not "real". So you give it an IP address, etc just like a real bare-metal computer....and you install the software you need.
As long as there is network connectivity between the VM and the computer you're using, you're golden.
@barren hemlock I've pruned down my setup just so I wouldn't have to use a Windows computer. I could, but I strongly prefer not to.
@grave crest I am running both MacOS (High Sierra) and win 10 and have never seen this problem when moving a window ( btw I don't use CubicSDR). I can't find any forum posts describing this either. However there's this https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120148/cant-move-spaces-from-one-screen-to-another . ( I realize that this is not vary smiler to your problem but its something ¯_(ツ)_/¯ )
Lol now that I look more closely at the forum post it is not similar at all. welp
Haha, that's allright
The click and drag is behaving as if i lifted my finger from the mouse button -- even though I didn't.
Which is...weird.
shrugs cubicSDR works for the most part though! 😃
Linux is superior
I don't like apple that much. You cant tinker with them like other systems

Finally got my MOdel M I've had in storage after it was a dumpster rescue cleaned up
Such a nice keyboard.
pairs quite nicely with Cool Retro Term
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DZ9rycxXkAAfhHa.jpg this is hitting the spot
I've had a dumpster rescue model m sitting around in a container for years now
finally took the time to get it cleaned... pretty sure it was in a wood shop or something
so much gunk and other stuff
sooo hard to scrub it all out
I gave up and got it 'clean enough'
if I overclock my raspberry pi 2(700 mhz- 1ghz) if I clock it to 1ghz, could it run minecraft java with optifine?
for instance, the latest snapshots of 1.13 perform very well compared to other versions due to being optimized,,, finally.

A little late to this but @sleek urchin I've put my keyboard in the dishwasher before (top rack) to clean it. Just make sure it's completely dry before plugging it in.
Yeah, with that keyboard I can understand.
plus, if water gets between the front plate and the back plate, it gets trapped in the membranes
would then have to pop all the plastic rivets (which, granted, break anyways due to age)and replace them
@sleek urchin , approx. what year was it manufactured? Is it PS/2 interface?
AT cable, actually, but that's electrically the same
18 FEB 86 specifically for the manufacture date, according to the label on the bottom
OK, was wondering if these were what we had in my lab in grad school, but I think this is ~5 years older. We had a few IBM RS/6000 workstations and then a bunch of IBM X-station client terminals.
there have been a whole lot of various IBM keyboards over the ages

@grave crest and you thought the GPD was small
Good lord, who would make something that small?
Why would someone make something that small?
Zipit Z2. Was originally designed as a messenger right when the iPhone launched.

What...
I don't even have a use for one of those, but I want it.
And on it now is an OpenWRT build with Gmenu2x
It's ok, the bot can smite legit words if it detects a possible naughty word embedded in it.
Neat
So, I just got a phone call from the "IRS" demanding that I pay back taxes that I owed -- exactly $4987.32 cents worth. Must pay right now. Or they'd call my local police department to have the sheriff arrest me for intentionally defrauding the government.
Of course it was a scam. It was a glorious 47 minutes I wasted on the phone with them -- if they were talking to me, they weren't trying to intimidate someone else. And make no mistake, they were rather brutish and mean, yelling at me, bullying me, threatening me. All water off a duck's back 🦆.
But I wanted to use this as an opportunity to ask a favor of everyone -- remind your family, your loved ones, your grandmas and grandpas -- that the IRS will never call you. [All of their correspondence is officially done via postal mail].
Same goes for "you have a virus" scams from people falsely claiming to be "Microsoft", "Dell", etc. They'll never cold call you claiming something is wrong.
I have been getting callas every day on this one
I have herd reports of people getting money out of the scammers
@grave crest Bravo! I like to top off those scam conversations by asking "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"
Getting on the Do not call registry leads to more calls.
it's soposed to reduce them, thing is they are on the hook for $1,500 per call if they call you
I think the law is the last thing the IRS scammers are thinking about -- between fraud, impersonating a federal agent, and being unable to sleep at night for stealing from poor ol' granny.
yeah , they just don't care, and are praying on peoples feer
Uh hey
r/graphic_design: Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, and illustration.
Anyone willing to give me advice on this?
@unkempt shoal When it comes down to it, it's their call because they're writing the cheques.
Thats true 😦
If there's some misunderstanding, a meeting might be able to clear it up.
But even if there was a misunderstanding, and by clearing it up
can we still move forward positivel?
If you end it cleanly and professionally, they might come back to you later for more work. Who knows.
It's possible, yes. But from what you've said, I'd go in assuming it'll be wrapped up.
If so, shake hands and move on.
@cursive pike what kind of board is that
@dusty citrus A RISC-V arduino UNO format dev board from SiFive
@dusty citrus The "HiFive1" https://www.sifive.com/products/hifive1/
@dusty citrus They sent me one to play with.
Thanks @cursive pike how do you like it so far I am looking at them online and might consider getting one
@dusty citrus It just arrived this morning. It'll be a whilke before I have time to do much with it.
Okay when you get a chance to mess around with it can you message me and tell me your opinion on it
@cursive pike I have one I've been meaning to mess with too
@stuck moth It has some nice specs.
@stuck moth It’s FAST
At least the clock is. I haven’t seen benchmarks yet.
yeah, I mean to get into RISC-V stuff. maybe after 3.x is out the door
though that'll probably be nRF52 polish time
as of 2018, is 8gb of ram enough for, modern software needs?
Yeah, will do most things just fine, as long as you are not doing extreme thing such as rendering and like machine learning
or 100 google chrome tabs
I'd say 8GB is a perfectly fine baseline for long term relevance
The commonly held wisdom is that you can get by with 8GB of RAM, but with how much Chrome and Windows 10 use does this still hold up in 2018? Buy the CORSAIR...
LTT did a video on just that
I think it is because chrome seperates each tab into their own enviroment
so it keeps malicious code away from other tabs memory
I ended up getting some more RAM and bumping my PC up to 16GB.
but then, I do way more than just game
8gb is fine for me, unless you are doing complex tasks for graphics/video, massive number crunching, virtualization, etc. For a non-technical college curriculum, high school, or casual use machine, it'll be perfectly fine.
Though, you cant do any harm going to 16gb - especially if this is a new purchase you plan on using 2-5 years.
heh, this was an older one, but I always figured it was a reasonable upgrade path
just didn't think it'd cost as much as it did at this point...
Ram prices, like ssd prices and graphics card, have been rather high - each for various reasons
add to that passive component prices
=p
but yeah, 16GB, was a nice upgrade
but then, I've never been one to constantly leave dozens and dozens of browser tabs open
yeah
I do casual gaming and casual web browsing
a lot of casual stuff
but from my experience, 4gb computers are slow nowadays
I'm using 5GB basically only running firefox
Hi everyone! just wanted you to know that this account, @quiet urchin Is replacing my old account, @vague mist.
well, for extremely simple uses, you could get away with just 2gb, on windows 7 even...
Well after the latex debate, naturally comes the question of how to pronounce "gif" 😛
That one is in my understanding, to late to change to a j
Whew.. just finished writing a section for my next guide on adder and subtractor circuits, that delves into logic simplification.
@karmic kite I would say with a hard "G" like saying "gift". But what about the acronym for Disk Operating System (DOS)?
did you know that you can repair a usb cable with aluminum foil?
cause I just did
@vestal phoenix D-AW-S, is there ever been a debate on that?
What about SQL?
@karmic kite I've heard it pronounced the same as the Spanish word for "two". I say "doss" and "sequel".
never seen that before
I just bought Nike Air Mag socks to wear with my Air Mags... noice.
hey, so if I were to connect an ipad to a computer via a lightning cable, could I set up a usb ethernet connection and control the pc using the ipad, over the lightning cable?
doubt it, apple wouldn't allow for it most likely
I don't think you can do that -- the closest I could suggest would be to install teamviewer (or a similar remote control program) on the computer, and the iOS compatible client on the tablet. I know for sure teamviewer has compatibility for iOS->computer, as I use that frequently.
I was wondering if there's means of doing that over a wired connection
in another world, sure
but you're talking apple products
so no
even if USB Gadgets are a thing that would let you have ethernet fun over that way
can I build a interdimensional portal to travel to the parralel universe where this is possible? (yes this is a joke)
what about synergy ?
Synergy only works with MacOS, Windows, and Linux.
omg yes
I must make an army of them

so somehow my friend's flash drive broke, he sent me this image, is this repairable?https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/397873040769417218/432919804144386053/20180409_110832.jpg
so it'd be possible but not with tools that the average person would have?
you could solder wires to the individual traces between the pcb layers and try that but that is why i say is would be difficult
ok
Any have the new RPi model 3 b+? It worth it? I was debating on making a small compute cluster/web server out of 6 of them
I dont own one but I've heard great things about it
nintendo labo garage is basically a microcontroller for kids
@willow anvil 6??
dont
6*35 is about 210, you can get a server off ebay for about 250-300 thats probably much better
or just rent something in the cloud
I mean for fun mostly
expensive fun project
true
i wouldnt
then buy a 2u style server
the cloud is not secure
i mean like digitalocean or something
you are sharing core with other people
yeah
*cores
not in all cases
I suppose, but I also use the pi for a lot of random other stuff
you can get pretty cheap dedicated servers nowadays
hosting game servers mostly
I mean I have cloud stuff already
so whats the reason for this?
they have trouble hosting game servers
their serverless platform?
standard EC2
hmm, never used, my digitalocean droplet has always been fine, and my friend used to run a server hosting company and used ovh dedicated servers
droplets for hosting games?
why not? what game is it
oh
that seems like a good option then, to host at home
what about just buying a server instead of many pis?
pi's are relatively overpirced
they do feel as such
so buying old model 3 b's are on the cheap
since people are selling for then new ones
you do you

@willow anvil Why not use amazon gamelift? ec2 isnt meant for gaming
will readyboost actually help my pc run a little faster?
Is your memory your bottle neck? If you open task manager is it at 100% memory use?
my memory is at 88%, and it's only that high because I am running a virtual machine with 4gb of ram dedicated to it,
why is there no bots in an engineering server?
probably because it's either not that great of a server, or they have no need for bots
if a server has no bots, it's either young, poorly developed, or lacks the need for bots
bots are fun and fun is important so bots are a must.
I know of a server(draconity.org server) that has no bots
