runic elbow
#

I should maybe get some more RAM for this thing.

dusty citrus
#

IF it'll take it, sure.

runic elbow
#

I can't end the task.

#

Wait, it's good.

covert spire
#

Wait, you're trying to run a retro pc as your main media center?!?!?

runic elbow
#

No, just for kicks and giggles. I just want to see if I can.

covert spire
#

Why do you hate yourself?

runic elbow
#

Because I do.

covert spire
#

I can think of more challenging projects . . .

#

Hold on . . .

#

I'll be back when they come to mind

runic elbow
#

I already have one: Getting Firefox to work.

#

It doesn't work, but I'll get around that.

#

OK. Can't get around it.

#

Kernel Ex failed me.

covert spire
#

On Win98?

runic elbow
#

On WIndows ME.

covert spire
#

I'm gonna tell you now, only IE will work on that

#

And at that is questionable

runic elbow
#

It has Google, but it can't even load Wikipedia. Which is unacceptable.

covert spire
#

Although, if you're using Win ME for this, feel free to vlog it, I wouldn't mind seeing how this turns out

runic elbow
#

I would, but I can't edit it.

#

I have no video editor.

covert spire
#

Oh, bummer

#

I haven't seen anyone suffer trying to use WinME in ages

runic elbow
#

It's not Windows ME itself that's making me suffer, it's trying to get modern things working on it. And most of it is because the hardware isn't very good

covert spire
#

It's trying to get things to work on it

runic elbow
#

I give up. This thing needs serious upgrades before I can do much with it. First target would be a better video card. 25 Megs of VRAM isn't going to cut it.

dreamy solstice
#

you have agp or pci?

#

for agp:EVGA GeForce 6200

#

for pci:nvidia geforce 6200

runic elbow
#

My graphics are Intergrated SiS 651 graphics.

dreamy solstice
#

I have links for both gpus

#

both about $20

runic elbow
#

I would get them, but I don't really have $20. I might, but I'll have to check.

dreamy solstice
#

I'll go ahead and send the links

runic elbow
#

What free video editing software would you guys reccomend? I would use Windows Live Movie Maker, but, eh.

dusty citrus
#

I used one in Linux not too long ago. The config files are still present.

#

openshot

#

I don't know anything about it but I liked it (and it was really quite a few years ago).

#

I'ved used it to import movies that stopped playing in the middle of the movie because something was too iffy (istr that VLC rejected the movie at that spot).

covert spire
#

That may help me

runic elbow
#

So I went to install LMMS on my WIndows ME machine, and apparently, it doesn't need Kernel Ex to install.

#

It just does it.

#

But it doesn't work because missing DLL files.

#

@indigo jetty Hey, I just wanted to thank you for sharing the project write-up for your Zelda gift chest. I found some basswood chests at a local craft store for a dollar each, and couldn't help but recreate the project for a gift to a friend of my own. 😃 I will say, though, that staining a premade basswood chest is a lot easier than assembling from 3D printing and popsicle sticks.

I'm also doing a few other changes: my ATTiny85 is carried on a DigiSpark board because that's what I had on hand, and thus for power I'm using a single AA battery and a cheapo Shenzhen-direct 5V boost converter. And finally, I'm using a microswitch instead of the reed switch and relying on the decent latch pressure of the box to actuate it.

I'm going to do a false bottom made of light diffusion material, as well, so the LEDs underlight the gift.

I'll post pics and such when it's done.

fluid forum
#

@runic elbow have you looked at openshot ?

dreamy solstice
#

ping me when there are no conversations going on in this channel

runic elbow
#

@CJ I think you're good.

dreamy solstice
#

ok

#

since It's been a while I'm going to repost my server invite. I do it at least once a week, and-if 300+ messages after the last invite

dusty citrus
#

lol inspector gadget

fluid forum
#

I always loved that show as a kid

covert spire
#

Funny was I just heard a guy talking about doing that

#

With a legit pop out light from the hat

#

I think with fandom of Inspector Gadget, this seems fitting

fluid forum
#

that could be fun

#

he had like every tool known to man

dusty citrus
#

But it was Penny who saved the day, we sure could use some more girl makers!

stray wind
#

@proven olive Where are you when I need puns?

proven olive
#

I literally just got home and sat down.

dreamy solstice
#

he's busy doing punny stuff elsewhere

stray wind
#

@proven olive Unacceptable.

#

😉

proven olive
#

Hey, if I got paid to sit around on the Discord and make puns all day, that'd be fine by me.

stray wind
#

I need some lamp puns. All I have is "lamp it up".

dreamy solstice
#

we pay you by letting you continue using this server.

#

right?

dusty citrus
#

frageeeeelaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy

dreamy solstice
#

must be italian

fluid forum
#

Penny was my girl

proven olive
#

Did she have a lot of thoughts?

#

Or did she just want yours?

dusty citrus
#

lol @ lamp it up fuzzball

fluid forum
#

look i was like 9 when that show was on , and she was a girl hero, ther were not alot of those then

dusty citrus
#

she saved his life like almost every show

dreamy solstice
#

How was Rome split in two? With a pair of Ceasars.

dusty citrus
#

I guess it would have been better if even the dog was not smarter than him though.

dreamy solstice
#

Did you hear about the guy who lost the left side of his body? He's alright now.

#

also please dont stab me for making bad puns

fluid forum
#

i don't have that emote, so you are safe

dreamy solstice
#

good

#

😠 🗡

#

that exists

fluid forum
#

lol

dusty citrus
#

I'm not stupid, I just had a lampotomy.

#

Maybe not polically correct.

fluid forum
#

no, but i am not offended

#

i could show you the scishow vid on it

dusty citrus

I was raised in the lamp of luxury.

fluid forum

seeing an you brought it up @dusty citrus

dusty citrus

I was just about to eat lunch too yuck. and how that guy hot a sliced hard boiled egg in his head I don't even want to know.

fluid forum
#

sorry

#

i tried to warn you

#

maybe i should delete the link?

tame saddle
dusty citrus
#

haha I was just joking but I did no even look at the video.

fluid forum
#

oh

#

it's really creepy what we did to others in the name of medicine

#

it's better now in most places

dusty citrus
#

yes they did some horrible things, and to tomorrow's standards still a lot of horrible things.

fluid forum
#

oh I know

dusty citrus
#

wow deja vu moment.

#

Wild stallions!

fluid forum
#

okay so this one is actualy on topic but wile we are all here I ran in to an issue a wile back and have been trying to work it out on my own

#

I want to wount my web cam to my spinning wheel, but sisa and vibration are issues

dusty citrus
#

If you're on topic in #general-chat you may run into a race condition

fluid forum
#

oh, is that bad

#

should i get more cosplay off reddit?

dusty citrus
#

I don't think there's a way, even in principle, that I can know what you should do. ;)

#

mounted to your car tire?

fluid forum
#

well it's not likxo i want to attact it to the bobbin....

#

no spinning wheel

#

ill get an image

dusty citrus
#

like making yarn during the Colonial period

fluid forum
#

yes i am a nerd and a crafter

dusty citrus
#

but why would you want to mount it to the spinning wheel?

fluid forum
#

thats my travel wheel

dusty citrus
#

nice wheel

fluid forum
#

for my stream

dusty citrus
#

oh so not to the actual spinning part

fluid forum
#

as of now the camera also looks at the lower part of my body it a way that i dislike

dusty citrus
#

Sew we're being regaled with homespun tales

#

that sounds good tbh

fluid forum
#

i love it

#

it's fun

dusty citrus
#

ghandi spun

#

I do crafting too

fluid forum
#

i wish i could do a drop spindle , but I can't

dusty citrus
#

fun to mix anything crafty with tech

fluid forum
#

oh yeah

#

all by bobbins are 3d printed

dusty citrus
#

cosplay, jewlery, tatting, croquet, card making, I do those and love to mix them with tech

#

tatting as in thread tatting not tattoos lol

fluid forum
#

I want to try knitting with the neopixel sequuence but there are issues

dusty citrus
#

and crochet not croque? lol omg

fluid forum
#

it's french

#

or something

dusty citrus
#

I think movie cameras strapped to bicycles are used to capture raw footage that is later post-processed to remove some of the jarring visual transitions inherent in such moving image captures.

fluid forum
#

it also likely came before knitting

#

they nest to me mounted spring i think

#

like a steady cam

dusty citrus
#

perhaps just a stand alone camera on a tripod not connected to the table at all would make it more stable.

fluid forum
#

maybe, the usb cable on the c920 is short

dusty citrus
#

mabye look into a variant of octoprint for 3d printers and could remote into it even.

#

I don't know what kinds of inertial dampers work well on a small scale. I would expect hydraulics, maybe, to be employed.

fluid forum
#

i need simple

#

i think if i strap something to the back madin (yes thats what it's called) and then mount the camera to that it may work

dusty citrus
#

Well microphones can have spider-like devices that are pretty good at removing shock waves from the microphone element's pickup zone.

fluid forum
#

but it's an odd shape

dusty citrus
#

maybe just tape a go pro to your head

fluid forum
#

yeah if i ever get a yetti..... i just use my headset

#

i wish

#

those are not cheep

dusty citrus
#

pi zero w in a pi zero w case with an 8mp pi camera maybe

fluid forum
#

how hard is that to do, and whats the fps ?\

dusty citrus
#

You can also exploit lighting contrast techniques to de-emphasize portions of the imagery you'd rather not share quite so documentarily. ;)(

fluid forum
#

i use a c920 on twitch , but when you have it aimed at something moveing at 1200rpm it's not perfect

dusty citrus
#

ahh yea

fluid forum
#

I was blown away when i found out just how fast it all spun

dusty citrus
#

ok i'm not sure anything is going to capture that without slowing down the frames

fluid forum
#

yeah i was thinking of building a mini strobe anyway

dusty citrus
#

need a high speed cam for that and not sure what the point of watching it spin is

fluid forum
#

but that has it's own issues, thanks kodak

#

idk people want to watch so i do it now and then

#

and it's fun for me at least

#

but that pi ieda, how is the camera?

dusty citrus
#

yes it sounds liek it, I guess that came off wrong, it sounds interesting to watch but not sure how

#

yea the pi is not that fast either but they are portable

fluid forum
#

creative is a thing , but mostly people who 1 want to see 'their' thing made or 2 want to learn to do the thing on screen

dusty citrus
#

Ruiz Brothers did a project recently where they move the camera during the shot, using an apparatus.

#

its perfectly capable of 8mp video though although the pi zero series is only single core. so might have limitations.

fluid forum
#

Im not sure i want to deal with wireloss and obs and twitch , I know it's knittpicky but I do already have a camera

#

i could try over the sholder with my tripod ?

dusty citrus
#

yea its probably much better at what you are trying to do, yes over the shoulder works

fluid forum
#

it's limiting , short cord tripod in the way

dusty citrus
#

I wish John parks , tony dicola, or Noe and Pedro would post more about their cool camera setups, I am sure someone had to somewhere?

#

park*

fluid forum
#

that could be fun

#

I spent an hour looking for laptops on eBay. And they have nothing. NOTHING that I'm looking for.

fluid forum
#

what are you looking for ?\

runic elbow
#

Something cheap, old, completely working, with the AC adapter, and that clearly states wether it takes Mini IDE or SATA.

#

And also shipping that won't cost me a leg or an arm.

dreamy solstice
#

I aLrEaDy SeNt YoU lInKs To TwO lApToPs, ThAt ArE tHe BeSt HoPe YoU hAvE

dusty citrus
#

might have more luck on craigslist imo

runic elbow
#

I'm not sure what hard drives those two laptops take.

#

Also, thanks for the suggestion.

dreamy solstice
#

they take IDE hdds

#

2.5"

fluid forum
#

i have a coulple of not so working but fixobles that you can have for the shipping

dreamy solstice
#

I once owned one of those lenovo's

#

it uses standard 2.5" IDE's

#

the hp one does too

covert spire
#

Wait, knistsers aren’t maker’s?

#

Since when?!?!?

runic elbow
#

OK, thanks for the info.

dreamy solstice
#

pretty much all modern laptops use 2.5" IDE's

dusty citrus
#

banana pi and odroids also have native sata but maybe you want something more powerful.

dreamy solstice
#

and both those laptops are pretty modern

#

the hp is 2012-2013 I think

#

the lenovo might be slightly newer

runic elbow
#

Wasn't Mini IDE phased out by then?

dreamy solstice
#

they use normal IDE

runic elbow
#

I'm sure all laptops made after 2006 use SATA.

covert spire
dreamy solstice
#

oh wait

#

crap

#

nvm

fluid forum
#

do you mean knitters ?

covert spire
#

They usually got older stuffs that works

dreamy solstice
#

they use SATA hdds

#

not IDE

#

I got the two confused

covert spire
#

Also, there is a IDE to SATA pcb

#

I got one to include my 3.5” floppy reader

dreamy solstice
#

REEEE, how the hell do I even confuse the two?!

#

sigh

covert spire
#

@fluid forum yea, dat

fluid forum
#

I would comment on someone saying knitters are not makes but it would violate the #code-of-conduct and i do not wish to do taht

dreamy solstice
#

knitters are makers

dusty citrus
#

kitters certainly are makers

dreamy solstice
#

a maker is someone who makes stuff

#

knitting has a finished product

covert spire
#

As someone once said “Amazing how knitting & Fire are so creative that you rub two sticks together & make something wonderful.”

fluid forum
#

I do risk arrest every now and then putting scaves on statues.....

#

but i am still a maker

covert spire
#

Knitting is among original makers

dusty citrus
#

speaking of which it was cool to see Becky hack that Machine knitter to be able to program it without having to enter it manually. I recently found 3 of them so hope to get to that project soon myself.

fluid forum
#

I wolud love a sock machine

#

thase things are so cool

covert spire
#

Wait, a project I can do with knitting?!?!?

fluid forum
#

i can teach you to knit if you like

covert spire
#

I can set up a machine, I cannot knit

dreamy solstice
#

my mom knits

covert spire
#

So many already tried

fluid forum
#

anyone can knit

dreamy solstice
#

I have like 80 trillion pairs of knitted socks

covert spire
#

I fail at sewing, knitting, crocheting

dreamy solstice
#

I never run out of socks

covert spire
#

Yes, apparently you never seen my attempts at knitting

dusty citrus
#

I tried knitting but my tension is too high, trying crochet but having the same issue hehe

fluid forum
#

@covert spire are you left handed?

covert spire
#

Yeap

fluid forum
#

try bigger needles @dusty citrus it helps loosen you up

#

you need to get left hand lessons

dusty citrus
#

yea that is what I am going to do for my crochet

covert spire
#

I’ll sick to just learning to spin yarn

#

That way people who has skills to use it can

dusty citrus
#

knitting and crochet are excellent for making because you can integrate elecronics right into your creation without have to add attchement points.

fluid forum
#

do you want me to let you know next time i brodcast it ?

covert spire
#

@dusty citrus this is why I want a loom

#

Also, there is a way to spin conductive thread into regular

dusty citrus
#

yes

#

so many fun things!

fluid forum
#

schacht has a 'knitters loom'

dusty citrus
fluid forum
#

i have seen other but not this one , thank you

dusty citrus
#

They did an event in our town a couple of summers ago. All of downtown.

fluid forum
#

yarn bombing

dusty citrus
#

Yeah. Went all summer. It was kind of weird when they took it all down.

fluid forum
#

sadly had to happen

#

rain...

covert spire
#

That car needs NeoPixel rings for headlights & taillights

covert spire
#

Do anyone know of image editor that works on Linux?

dusty citrus
#

gimp

covert spire
#

I tried using that . . .

dreamy solstice
#

krita

#

works on linux

#

@covert spire

covert spire
#

Thanks

dreamy solstice
#

and it's better than gimp

#

easier to use, more powerful and prettier

covert spire
#

This will at least work for making OS tans

dreamy solstice
#

os tans?

#

I know I use it for drawing concept art

covert spire
dreamy solstice
#

oh

#

yeah it'll work for that

covert spire
#

There's one for each of Windows

dreamy solstice
#

no problem

covert spire
#

Linux Mint lacks in it

dreamy solstice
#

what about macos?

#

or raspbian

#

or michaelsoft binbows?(chinese ripoff)

covert spire
dreamy solstice
#

or chromeos, ios, android

#

I imagine michaelsoft binbows would be a fat greasy businessman

covert spire
#

bald on top

#

At least should be

#

& trying to be cute, like other os tans

dreamy solstice
#

but failing horribly

#

because it's a chinese ripoff

covert spire
#

Of course!

#

In fairness, MS pretty much allowed rip offs anyways

dreamy solstice
#

raspbian would be an engineer of sorts

covert spire
#

Wow, I'm not getting one for Raspbian

dreamy solstice
#

why not?

covert spire
#

nvm

#

This is why I dislike all search engines

#

No, I found 1

dreamy solstice
#

oh

covert spire
#

and like 100 Debian

#

& about half a dozen red hat

dreamy solstice
#

this was the only result

covert spire
#

Yeap

#

Taken me 2 search engines to get that

dreamy solstice
#

use my moto, if you cant find it, make it

covert spire
#

That was kinda where I was going with Linux os tans

#

Search Linux mint

dreamy solstice
#

just "linux mint"?

covert spire
#

yeap

dreamy solstice
#

the os looks pretty

#

if only it ran on i686 cpus

covert spire
#

It can't?

dreamy solstice
#

I've tried to run debian linux vms

#

my laptop has a core i5 2520m

covert spire
#

Debian & Ubuntu based is VERY different

dreamy solstice
#

it's an x64 according to the os, i686 acording to software, and in reality it's amd64

covert spire
#

& that is what I'm using

#

with no troubles using Linux Mint

dreamy solstice
#

hm I'll try to make a vm them

covert spire
#

I'm guessing you don't have optical drive?

dreamy solstice
#

I do

covert spire
#

Huh

dreamy solstice
#

I disabled it's drivers because I never use it and it's super noisy and starts spinning at random times making it sound like my laptop is trying to fly away

covert spire
#

Well, Zorin os & Linux Mint use kinda older version of Ubuntu that is stable

#

I say kinda because it's not newest one out, but it's 64b type

dreamy solstice
#

I'm serious, when my laptop's dvd drive starts running, it's so loud it sounds like someone stuck a helicopter engine in my laptop

covert spire
#

If you want ready out the gate, Zorin os is better

#

Oh, I know, I had same trouble in laptop before

dreamy solstice
#

I just want to make my own os for the hell of it

#

dunno how though

covert spire
#

Sadly, I know local group that is now trying to teach that

dreamy solstice
#

I want to make my own linux distro

covert spire
#

But, that is essentially what Linux based on, creating original os

dreamy solstice
#

I dont even know where to start to learn to make an os

covert spire
#

Although, if ya do like Zorin os done, & end up creating Ubuntu based that others can use

dreamy solstice
#

even if at start it's like a dos style command prompt

#

of course, when someone makes a program or device for the first time it normally is simple and or primitive

covert spire
#

Tbh, that is what Ubuntu really is

dreamy solstice
#

like my homemade transistor

covert spire
#

Linux Mint & Zorin os creates GUI for it

dreamy solstice
#

so all linux distros are basically like windows 95 was for dos?

#

a gui addon?

covert spire
#

Not all, but Ubuntu is essentially for those two

dreamy solstice
#

huh

covert spire
#

red Hat is it's own GUI

#

Which is why it costs

#

You are paying for the GUI

dreamy solstice
#

brug I got my copy of windows 10 for free, after the free upgrade, using legal manners

covert spire
#

I do too

#

I never used it

#

Linux Mint cost me as much

#

a dvd

dreamy solstice
#

I just took an hdd from a dead computer that had windows 10 on it

#

and put it in my computer

covert spire
#

I just burnt it to disk when upgrade came out

#

then swapped to Linux

dreamy solstice
#

I prefer windows because all the applications run on windows

covert spire
#

Yes, I admit Win10 tan is cute

dreamy solstice
#

I code in python and spl only anyways

covert spire
#

Python is easier to code on Linux 😉

#

Also, I've learned over time, only 1 app I miss having on my pc

#

& I'm trying to resolve that issue

dreamy solstice
#

I dont tend to use external modules though

#

I tend to write my own

#

I dont use tensorflow or scipy

#

I use my own NN module

covert spire
#

I use terminal

dreamy solstice
#

I dont use pickle, I use my own datalib module

covert spire
#

You know what Ubuntu & Raspbian have in common?

dreamy solstice
#

hm?

covert spire
#

They're both Linux based

#

Same for Android

dreamy solstice
#

oh, yeah raspbian is a linux os

#

I knew that already

#

isnt ios also linux based?

covert spire
#

Nope

#

iOS & Mac are extremely different

dreamy solstice
#

wait, mac is linux based?

covert spire
#

Neither of them are

dreamy solstice
#

ios is made from darwin bsd

#

similar to unix

covert spire
#

Yeap

dreamy solstice
#

hm

#

my vm gives me a cpu error

zinc lintel
#

All operating systems with a GUI are a GUI running on top of something else, right? 😉

dreamy solstice
#

I guess

#

I mean the windows gui is just explorer.exe

fluid forum
#

wrapers are a bit more complicated then that, but preaty much yes

dusty citrus
#

There are document-driven interfaces that are (I believe) deeply integrated into the 'underlying' OS.

#

Oberon and Plan9 seem to be oriented more that way.

#

Some kinds of displays can be thought of more as a peripheral than as a usr interface; parametric CAD is deeply parameter-driven though it usually has a full means to interact using a pointing device and a pixellated display.

#

The rc shell in Plan9 has a very strong impact on the experience of using a 'terminal' as they went in a different direction from almost everybody else. The most interesting thing to me about it is that the entire scrollback history is editable; only the cursor position at the end of the session is relevant to passing new commands to the command processor.

abstract violet
#

Happy Family Day BC Folks :)!

#

and later in the month for @cursive pike

#

today is the last day this holiday for BC is out of sync with the other provinces... x)

cursive pike
#

@abstract violet Next Monday I believe.

abstract violet
#

😃 yeah it's weird how we have ours earlier--

cursive pike
#

@dreamy solstice @covert spire Linux is really just the kernel. MacOS & iOS use the Mach kernel. GNU/Linux and MacOS/iOS are flavours of Unix.

#

@abstract violet Timezones ... 😉

abstract violet
#

hahah! our country is not THAAT big xD

covert spire
#

@cursive pike I know

#

That was kind of what I was getting at, I’m just bad at explaining softwares stuffs

cursive pike
#

@covert spire Software stuffs is my life. Hardware stuffs, too.

covert spire
#

I noticed

#

Hardware stuffs is my familiarity

#

In every form of it

#

What ya think of that?

cursive pike
#

@covert spire Pretty cool. Rust, huh? I’ve had a look at it. Seems pretty cool.

covert spire
#

Yea, one programmer likes Rust

#

Idaho anything about that coding

#

But file logic they explained seems pretty cool

covert spire
zinc lintel
#

Glorious glorious overkill 😛

covert spire
#

Isn’t that what purpose of CES show is?

#

Overkill button

dusty citrus
#

Sweet!

#

Only in Japan. Problem is hardly ever see these items other than in CES or some obscure show then it dissapears.

covert spire
#

Well, that’s because either maker’s make it better, or just point out how impractical it really is

dusty citrus
#

Yea just kind of weird, we been seeing stuff like this since the 50's and nothing ever becomes of it. We would be in the future they described if they had only actually produced these things.

#

Hard to believe Ben Skora back in 78' had a robot, a mortorized chair, a star trek type door, and an atomated DTMF phone control system in his house and here we are 40 years later and hardly doing any better.

covert spire
#

Yea, I wondered what happened to automatic sliding doors per house

dusty citrus
#

Just weird cause back then makers like him had to invent these systems from scratch and I have pretty much all of it at my fingertips and just have to put it together and it still takes me forever, I think I started a project 3 years ago, still not finished it. lol

dreamy solstice
#

would anyone have some advice as to creating my own operating system?

dusty citrus
#

If you can author your own 'forth' you're well on your way.

dreamy solstice
#

like are there any good tutorials as to creating my own linux distro that you know of?

dusty citrus

@dreamy solstice I learned a bunch about linux by doing Linux from Scratch. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/ Its great for learning linux but I don't recommend it if you want to doing anything with it after you manage to install it. package managers are very nice. Arch - because it functions

@abstract violet a few of us have pre-ordered. @cursive pike has said he's going to do some learn guides on mesh (IEEE 802.15.4) and the partcle boards. they seem pretty awesome. LTE cellular at $30 was what really sold me...

#

and in some strange stroke of universe magic, @heady spire recently swooped in and has been rocking out on nRF52840 dev for CircuitPython. blinka

abstract violet
#

@tame saddle have not tried any particle stuff before so it’ll be interesting. I got a few of the wifi ones to try out, Canada isn’t supported by the LTE board. Prolly will pick up a 2G/3G if I end up liking the platform

#

I’ve seen a bunch of smart watches based on the nRF52840 , would be cool to hack em and plop circuitpython in them

tame saddle
heady spire
#

Yes, I have big plans for the nrf port, I'm only getting started 😉

grave crest
#

@abstract violet How's that pre-order work? I need to add the tripler and component pack?

stuck moth
#

@abstract violet I preordered them too

cursive pike
#

@abstract violet @tame saddle I preordered a bunch of Xenons, a few Argons, and the ethernet module. My plan to use a dozen or so + the ethernet for my own smarthome project. And maybe make a few sets available as giveaways in some fashion.

abstract violet
#

@grave crest I think its automatic if you use the referal link, and i think they ship it in july as well

#

@cursive pike Yeah, this sounds like a fit with your smarthome node system!

#

@stuck moth nice to already have featherwings lying around adabot

stuck moth
#

yup! and circuitpython work already started

cursive pike
#

@abstract violet Certainly. When I saw the announcemnt, it was just a question of "how many do I need?" The answer was 13. I've been working on ideas for the design of V2 of my mesh nodes. Was thinking Feather M0/M4 with SPI flash (for storing sound clips etc). I was debating going the wifi route (as in the guide I just published) or Zigbee, or sticking with an nRF24 mesh. This is better than both (other than having to have centralized HUE control (which I do now). An M4 core is a win, as is 802.15.4 & thread.

#

@abstract violet I still expect to have an additional feather M0/M4 board. A dedtcated neural net based AMG8833 people detector, for example.

#

@abstract violet My thought for that is a feather M0/M4 with the AMG8833 wing... nice self contained module.

#

@abstract violet And probably something similar to handle I2S audio I/O/processing.

#

@abstract violet Simple sound recognition would be nice. E.g. was that a car backfiring, or the door being broken down. Dog bark, baby crying, etc.

wet topaz
#

@dastels does that mean that you have a use for 6 and are accounting for the certainty that you'll find a use for more or have you only bought enough for your initial requirements?

abstract violet
#

@cursive pike are the m4 similar to the samd51j ones?

#

@cursive pike also lucky #13 hehe

cursive pike
#

@abstract violet Same (I believe, very close if not identical) ARM Cortex-M4 core. On chip peripherals differ to some degree.

#

Well, 13 for me: 12 nodes and a base node that does mesh <-> LAN.

grave crest
#

@abstract violet I'm on the checkout page and they weren't added to the cart...hmm.

#

Was it a single use referral?

abstract violet
#

@grave crest It's not single use only -- trying to look where it details how the freebies are sorted out other than "both you and your friend will get one"

#

@grave crest and its only triggered if you buy one i guess, and will count towards a 'referral' -- sorry m8, this should be more clear

#

@cursive pike "In some countries, such as Italy, 13 is considered a lucky number. The expression fare tredici ("to do 13") means hit the jackpot."

#

meant to quote this earlier ;3

dusty citrus
#

13 would be 10 in base 13.

fluid forum
#

not 1c ?

dusty citrus
#

10 in any base is the base itself.

fluid forum
#

10 in binary in 2

#

so i guess you are right

dusty citrus
#
2^1 = 2
2^2 = 4```
#

Any number to the zero'th power is unity (one). Any number to the first power is that number; any number to the second power is that number times itself.

fluid forum
#

i am so used to base 10 , I have issues with others

#

im okay with binary

#

and some tiny bit of hex

dusty citrus
#

Easiest way to convert to the powers-of-two bases is to group bits. In particular, group bits in threes to get octal translation; and group the bits in fours to get hexadecimal.

fluid forum
#

they both have there uses

#

we could not have computing without binary

#

so what made you bring up base 13 ?

dusty citrus
#

The scrollback. 'lucky' numbers (as-if!)

fluid forum
#

ah

dusty citrus
#

I once sent an email with just that one word: "Ah." Surprisingly provocative.

fluid forum
#

why am I not surprised ?

dusty citrus
#

Since the Universe is mostly empty, there are an uncountably large number of locations that do not know the answer.

cursive pike
#

I'm pretty much as fluent in binary and hex as I am in decimal. Comes from years of working in assembly language and with hardware. I missed the old days when the cool kids all used octal.

dusty citrus
#

istr that vt100 emulation relies on octal -- if you organize the vt100 codes in a table, by octal, extra information comes out of it that wasn't apparent otherwise.

#

wheras I think ASCII yeilds to a hexadecimal organization

#

It looks like daylight outside. I'm getting old -- I'm slightly scared.

fluid forum
#

how long have you been up ?

#

it's nothing like daylight yet for me

cursive pike
#

True about ascii and hex.

#

No idea where you folks are but it's not quite 11pm where I am.

dusty citrus
#

Right. New York time.

#

I think it's that there's new artificial light sources nearby that weren't there in past years, and the reflectivity of the snowfall. We're getting about six inches accumulation, if forecast holds.

cursive pike
#

It's drab & wet here and has been for a few days. Last week we had lots of snow.

dusty citrus
#

I just finished up a week's worth of decent (but cold) bicycle riding street conditions (rain came and removed the slippery stuff almost a week ago). Tonight is a reset -- won't be riding for probably a few days, anyway.

#

Pity.

fluid forum
#

speaking of ascii.... is there aty good way to convert the chars to a color code ?

#

has ideas

dusty citrus
#

esplain that

fluid forum
#

I was thinking onece i get my matrix to work scrolling ascii could be a thing if I could set colors to charterers

dusty citrus
#

I can't parse that. ;) Most Linux terminals do support color codes. MS-DOS called them ANSI.SYS (driven) codes, but I think they may simply be from VT-100 or VT-220. They're well known. ESC[33;40m for example.

#

so-called ANSI art is based on them, and there were text editors available back in the day just for that purpose.

fluid forum
#

the led matrix i have can do scrolling text, so why not scollling ascii? covnerting what the ascii is printed in a colol ond the led

#

is that better parsed ?

dusty citrus
#

No I don't understand the term ascii the way you're using it. I haven't drank any water in a while so it could be that. ;)

fluid forum
#

you know ascii art correct ?

#

as in cats out the letter s ?

dusty citrus
#

your typos really mess with my mind

fluid forum
#

sorry

#

if spell check missis them I tend to as well

cursive pike
#

ASCII is just character code.

fluid forum
#

right

cursive pike
#

The standard set. It's the low 128 characters

#

hence you often see "7-bit ascii"

dusty citrus
#

A is 65 in ASCII. B is 66. C is 67.

fluid forum
#

with 256 colors to pick from that could be easy to convert to an rgb matrix

cursive pike
#

To scroll on a matrix you will need to convert ascii codes to the bitmaps to scroll.

#

If your goal is to scroll text on the display

fluid forum
#

oh, I guess when I get that far i can work on it

#

it was just a random idea I was reminded of when it was brought up

dusty citrus
#

Hand-rolled LED matrices generally teach you that they take up all your resources and leave you with nothing else you can use.

fluid forum
dusty citrus
#

That's why the i2c backpacks came along and displaced them. ;)

#

As long as you are made happy just by the internal data the microcontroller has on tap to display on the matrix, you'll be fine.

#

Outside communication adds a lot (or too much) overhead. Of course you can always stop the refresh long enough to 'read the mail'.

fluid forum
#

true

#

I will just be happy to get the outside communication working anyway

#

#

I've been practicing the method for more than 10 years. The easiest way to use it is to memorize it for April 4th of the current year.

#

4/4 is Wednesday in 2018. 4/4 was Tuesday in 2017.

#

The other days are January 3rd (in 3 of 4 years; January 4th in the 4th year). Last Day of February (equivalent to the imaginary 'March 0'). 5/9 and 9/5; 7/11 and 11/7.

#

The hard part was what to do about the days prior to the end of February, under other algorithms.

#

March zero'th is a common fiction employed.

#

I probably use the system ten times each month, when I would otherwise consult a calendar.

#

I met a blind guy who had worked out his own system, probably 7 years into my own interest in the subject. At the time I could not understand his explanations (which were given verbally, several times in the course of our friendship).

#

"A year is a day" was one of his tropes.

#

One real nice advantage is that I can confirm social availability months ahead with just a thought "That falls on a Saturday -- I'm in!"

tame saddle
#

yeah, i saw the "March 0th" and had to giggle a little. that's an interesting intersection with Lewis Carrol; never knew he was such a mathematician...

dusty citrus
#

I know very little about Lewis Carrol. 'merican -- we didn't lionize that particular person. ;)

tame saddle
#

true. but we sure latched on to the many film adaptations of his work...

#

i'd have to say my favorite mathematician/artist is Escher though.

#

(coincidentally, i was hanging my print of Palm circa 1933 when I went google searching eariler)

dusty citrus
#

I'm a huge Roger Penrose fan. His lectures (found online) are fun and entertaining.

wet topaz
#

There is a theory (im not sure how much credance to give it) that Alice in wonderland was a satire of non-Euclidean geometry, a subject that professor Dodgson (Lewis Caroll) felt strongly about.

fluid forum
#

I have other theory's about that book

tame saddle
#

@wet topaz good read! thanks for that. interesting concept, even if that's all it is (not saying it isn't more).

wet topaz
#

I like the theory but I doubt that it will ever be confirmed.

dusty citrus
#

@tame saddle Do you use diff and patch?

tame saddle
#

about the only time i use diff is with git...

dusty citrus
#

I use diff a lot, to reorient when I've edited a document too many times in during a sitting.

fair summit
#

I use kdiff3 a lot. I use it as the default mergetool for git mergetool. It also does directory tree comparisons.

dusty citrus
#

I would want to use a private github.com section if I had extra money to burn -- they do a great job presenting things like I'm used to seeing by editing Wikipedia articles, wrt differences.

somber summit
#

I would get deadpool but the other 2 bob rosses are $20 each (limited and exclusive)

#

@covert spire

runic elbow
#

Of course they had to be limited.

#

I need one

covert spire
#

@somber summit Just means more the reason you need to add the Deadpool to that collection

somber summit
#

Fiiiiiine but that depends if i even find him

covert spire
proven olive
#

@tame saddle made me think of a joke - If you made a candy puzzle map of the US, would each piece be a state-mint?

tame saddle
#

lol

dusty citrus
#

That wasn't funny. ;)

covert spire
#

Was it too hard for ya?

#

Need to remember that for next crunchtime

somber summit
#

@covert spire The Deadpool Bob Ross Pop Figure isn’t out yet. The ones currently being sold are copies that got released too early (traditional store mistake since pops look so similar so some date exclusives accidentally get slapped on the shelves at the wrong time).

covert spire
#

I noticed it wasn’t released yet, I didn’t know any sold

somber summit
#

Crud, my eBay cart is $44 with only the two Bob Ross figures. Gotta do what I gotta do, but hopefully my local Target may have a lingering one for $10.

covert spire
#

Wait, Target might have these?!?!?

somber summit
#

@covert spire I believe they’re mainly pre orders or sneaky sneaks

covert spire
#

The link is for pre order

somber summit
#

@covert spire One of the limited edition ones is a target exclusive, the other was a 1/6 pre order chance.

covert spire
#

Seems like a 2nd movie promo from the date of release

#

Ah, see, I didn’t know where to find them

somber summit
#

You can buy all 3 of the normal variants at Gamestop.

#

I managed to get them with a coincidental buy 2 get 1 free deal that was happening when I went to the mall on Saturday.

covert spire
#

Ah, I haven’t been in GameStop in while, usually pops are picked over when I do

#

Although, the local mall is dead now

#

Since they added a calling center

somber summit
#

The only places I’ve seen Bob Ross pops are at Gamestop and Target. Best Buy says they have them but never personally see it.

covert spire
#

Last time I seen stuff at Best Buy, it seems too pricey for me

somber summit
#

Hopefully I can find that Target exclusive pop. Would be amazing if I can get more than one, put em on bid for eBay, 5 days, they’ll sell pretty quick

#

Earlier today, one sold for $16 + $5 via. Bid

covert spire
#

I felt like I should’ve jumped on the Gintoki Loot Anime figures

somber summit
#

I never realized the market for Pops lol.

#

I’ll prob pick up the Deadpool pop this week if it comes out.

#

If my math is right, I’ll have a 37.5 in tall tower of Bob Ross pops.

#

World’s best bragging rights, lol.

covert spire
#

Kind of makes ya feel like making a painting of it

somber summit
#

I’m gonna use em for the most random display piece ever.

covert spire
#

That’s kind of hard to say, I know some rather random displays

somber summit
#

It’ll be a BTTF hoverboard prop with Nike Mags on top of it, surrounded by Bob Ross Pop figures.

#

Rofl, to my surprise, it’ll be a ~$400 collection.

covert spire
#

Need a Gintoki Figure with that

#

On phone playing Monster Strike

#

With a BeyBlade in his hand

somber summit
#

Speaking of Beyblades, they’re back at Walmart

covert spire
#

I know

#

They been back for while now

#

I got some of newer ones

somber summit
#

They’re barely rebuilding the section for me

covert spire
#

I like the new stadium

#

Way better designed

somber summit
#

I might get back into Beyblades. They were definitely fun, especially trying to get the best beyblade.

covert spire
#

Yea, it seems crossing pieces is harder now

somber summit
#

Considering now they use solid metals instead of cheap aluminum, its an improvement

covert spire
#

Wait, you didn’t like the cheesy tiny bit of aluminum for “Metal casted super toughness” bit they ran?

#

One I fudged together from then seems rather idiotically OP tho

somber summit
#

I remember back in the days, you’d take a marker and color the outside of the metal ring so after battling, your beyblade doesn’t look like it got blended.

#

I remember having a beyblade and it had SO many chips in the ring.

covert spire
#

I called it “Battle proven scars”

#

Although, that one shredded other beyblades

#

That is why I said idiotically OP

somber summit
#

Do reverse spinner beyblades still exist?

covert spire
#

Which reminds me, I should try printing a pull string for the launcher

somber summit
#

I remember having El Drago and rekting Pegasus cuz of the reverse spin.

covert spire
#

No

#

Yea, reverse spin was way too good

#

It caused off balance

somber summit
#

I remember when I used El Drago, I would rip it less harder cuz when you spin it too hard, the reverse effect happens and you speed up ur opponent

covert spire
#

That is the off balance, because it’s force it into walls

somber summit
#

Did you ever watch the cartoon show of it?

#

It was so over exaggerated compared to playing it in real life, lol.

covert spire
#

The original up to Metal Gears

somber summit
#

You got them playing in Skate park bowls and stuff but then real life is small plastic bowls, lol.

covert spire
#

Wait, you mean they don’t jump out 20+ feet & have this magical powers that can destroy concrete arenas?!?!?

somber summit
#

I can recall the El Drago Vs. Pegasus fight where they fought in a full-fledged skate park bowl.

#

And then the dragon and horse attacks stuff

covert spire
dusty citrus
covert spire
#

Warning, don’t use new ones against old ones, they weigh so much more

somber summit
#

I should try to get an illegal El Drago combo, if possible, lol.

#

I believe a beyblade becomes illegal when it surpasses a certain weight.

covert spire
#

I did that one before

somber summit
#

Gtg now, I’ll be on the lookout for Bob Ross tomorrow 😃

covert spire
#

I can’t remember the name of the blade, but one did work for El Drago, & made it too OP

#

Nite

anyone here still play with their Nintendo 3DS and ESP8266 ? 😃

#

Yes, but never quite together.....

#

I'm intrigued.

abstract violet
#

@grave crest just used an esp8266 as a remote StreetPass Relay 😄

#

@grave crest most of the tutorials use old routers with ddwrt or similar -- but then I was like, hey --can an ESP8266 be used instead? and the answer is yes x)

@muted sigil bringing this over to #general-chat. its slow in there...but, ya now. 😄

somber summit
#

@covert spire DANG IT. There’s also GOLD Bob Ross’s. Looks like I’m gonna have to go deep to get EVERY Bob Ross.

covert spire
#

I think I heard your life savings account crying

somber summit
#

The other common ones also have gold versions.

#

$35 is the only listing for one -.-

covert spire
#

Oh deer

#

Ye, gold ones always cost more

somber summit
#

Looks like I’m seriously gonna have to raid Target

#

HOPEFULLY they have the elucid bob ross stand.

#

Supposedly, you can only get the gold ones from special bob ross stands.

covert spire
#

Oooohhh

somber summit
#

Well, gonna see if I can check Target tomorrow. These pops are extremely expensive and rare...

covert spire
#

Well, I’m going to have to make sure I get a bike first tho

#

Gas is costing me too much

somber summit
#

I plan to buy a ton of Bob Ross pops for resale

covert spire
#

I’m probably going to raid Target tomorrow

somber summit
#

Me 2

#

I need mah bob ross collection

covert spire
#

I would like at least enough for collection

#

And I know some guys locally that will raid over for such like these

#

I can totally make off well if I can get few extra

somber summit
#

Looks like eBay is best bet, already 2 new listings, one already at $4 in a day.

#

Especially if its a gold, flocked, or exclusive, easy $25 eBay bid listing.

#

Well, gold would be MUCH more

covert spire
#

Honestly, I can co-sign local comic shop

somber summit
#

Heres an example of Bob Ross stands

covert spire
#

Add about 10% on average from eBay

#

Yea, I think I seen the Chia head thingy

#

Which I’m considering

somber summit
#

If you look closely at the bottom, 4/5 of the Pops are the $25 resale target exclusive ones

covert spire
#

Need some plants in house for fresh smell

somber summit
#

I would get a chia but my dehumidifier will it.

covert spire
#

Mine isn’t that bad

#

My tree’s been doing fine

somber summit
#

My room isnt doing too good on space lol

#

Been trying to take advantage of vertical space.

covert spire
#

Ah, yea, I use one built into AC/Heat system for entire house

somber summit
#

Well, good luck trying to find those pops, if I find any exclusives, I’ll be stocking up on em.

covert spire
#

I’m sure ya will

#

I know which Targets that get less business in area, I’m going to be hitting them

somber summit
#

Btw Deadpool Bob Ross is releasing May.

covert spire
#

Oh, I thought it said July, ok

#

I do need to work on my Deadpool suite tho

#

Get ready for 2nd movie release

somber summit
#

Hopefully I get the normal Bob Ross’, three gold Bob Ross’, Deadpool Bob Ross, Flocked Bob Ross, Chase Edition Bob Ross, and Target Exclusive Bob Ross by the end of 2018, a 62.5in tall bob ross tower!

#

Prob will use it for extreme display

covert spire
#

Let’s be real, wall of Bob Ross

#

It will keep growing as more come out

somber summit
#

I’m hoping for a Bob Ross series 3. I never even knew a series 2 came out earlier this month.

#

Maybe more paintings

covert spire
#

Bob Ross Earth

#

Boondocks Bob Ross

somber summit
#

All there is right now is the Mountain Painting and the Sun painting

#

No greenery paintings yet.

covert spire
#

Yea, Earth is diff from mountains & sun

somber summit
#

Whoops, forgot one

covert spire
#

Trees?

somber summit
#

Yea

#

The trees one

covert spire
#

Need Ocean too

somber summit
#

There’s 30 seasons of bob ross so I think they’re gonna have enough paintings for a long time.

covert spire
#

Just maybe

somber summit

Rofl, Bob Ross w/ painting holding hands
