@sturdy oyster can we test mute you?
wait this already happened to me
lol sure
I think @stuck moth just gets a kick out of abusing his power in an ostensibly controlled environment
ok, now that they can't hear me, I can say how I really feel
Hehehhe
That joke kinda hit a wall there. Only nice things to say.
@elfin wave I think that might have been me last time...
no it was definitely scott, during an ask an engineer. he asked, though! and I was fine with it.
also, wow. there's a HAB that's been in the air for over a year. HIRF-6
@elfin wave when I started reading that sentence I was thinking HAB as in openHAB. It got a bit confusing for a moment there
yessss there's APRS code for arduino! https://www.projecttraveler.org/arduinotrack-controller
I'm going to have to look through it but this is excellent news
@elfin wave Right, now I remeber. It was scot I mutted after he mutted you.
@elfin wave Wait, wat? A year?!?
yes!
"Congratulations to Alan Adamson on his super pressure flight HIRFW-6
that is breaking world records for distance and duration with GPS proven
telemetry. His flight, call sign HIRF-6 for APRS and HIRFW-6 on 20
meters WSPR, using call sign K4JCW. With the exception of three days
since it was launched, it’s reported its position every single day!
• Launched, 9/20/2016
• Duration, 366+ Days, and still flying
• Distance, over 950,000 km
• Laps around the world, 20"
also I've been like "wah there's no APRS code anywheeeeere!" and since joining a mailing list have found 2-3 different implementations
there still isn't anything decoupled from a wider firmware type thing, unfortunately
Drat, no balloon emoji.
@elfin wave I didn't know they could stay aloft that long. I heard about this other balloon when it was launched and they were hoping it would say up ~100 days and break a record (only lasted 12 days though). Must be a different class of balloon (heavy lift?) https://eusospb.uchicago.edu/
yeah, I don't know enough about that yet
my goal right now is to get one to go up, take a bunch of pictures and log a bunch of data, and then burst/land somewhere I can get it back
@elfin wave You could always https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13745
Yeah, I'm going to use them for my rover and my oceanographic buoy projects.
you have oceanographic buoy plans too??
🎈 @polar wraith
sorry I'm getting distracted
@stuck moth In off topic and distracted? What?
@elfin wave Yessir. A Pacific Ocean drifter with Atlas Scientific sensors, solar panels for batteries, the Iridum block for data communications, and a Raspberry Pi water clarity sensor....
we were gonna test muting bu thten pi people came and I started giving them a tour
I want to. but I'm thousands of miles from my gaming computer
Lol I know, I'm just harassing you.
@stuck moth need gaming laptop
😃
@stuck moth think if you can bring a laptop what have can use for gaming when have time in travels
I decided i needed to turn off notifications on my phone for the Discord, I found I was spending too much time here! As much as I was enjoying it was coming at the cost of productivity and also sleep! I'll definitly still jump on when I can and I'll still get notified if mentioned, so I'll kind of be like beatlejuice, but you only need to call me once
@indigo jetty Completely understandable. A balance is always important. We'll still be here when you do have time!
@indigo jetty I'm addicted. Lol
Anyone else hate doing GUI layouts?
yup
whats it for @sturdy oyster
Im up waiting to validate an install for work
Joys of needing to do installs outside of office hours when you work for a US company
(01:38)
@indigo jetty it's the gui for a controlling a rc car/rover. It's soooo tedious. I just want to make things do other things, not position squares. It's bad when you start looking forward to code a slider.
ha
is it a webpage? I think you were going with bluetooth though were you?
BTW I bought a couple of those motors and encoders from your video
I'm probably doing wifi.
Oh cool. I have a video on those, but stupid me forgot to turn on screen capture so none of the code got on there.
I'm looking to control the hands of an analog clock from an arduino
you can integrate into the motor that comes with them, sending a pulse makes it tick, but I think it will be too slow
I seen a video where the fastest a guy could get it to go was tick 5 times every second, which would take nearly 2 hours to complete a full rotation!
Oh wow
So i was thinking of using a motor attached to the gear that you use to set the time
That could work. Not sure how accurate it would be unless you made some larger encoders with more spokes.
Mine only have 20, so every three seconds for one "tick"
overall I would be happy withing 5 minutes of accuracy
but might be an issue ok
I can probably 3d print one with more slots if needed
You could 3d print....lol
its a weird concept ok 😃
Im testing out if it would be feasible to make one of these
(well i would be)
(when the stuff comes)
I want to see would it be possible to make using cheap chinese parts
That's really cool.
yeah, no idea what I'd use it for!
a challenge i guess 😃
I think it should be possible
Since you only need vertical and horizontal, have you considered hall effect sensors?
yeah, that would be a good idea
but the magnets would interfere with the hands probably?
Depends what they are made of, but i wouldn't think so
will look into that too
my way would have the problem that I dont really know where the hands are, I can just (best case scenario) know how much they have moved
Yeah
So if I lost power I would need to reset the clocks manually
which i would be ok with, its just a POC
but ideally something that knew would be better
How big will it be?
In American
Im guessing each digit would be maybe 1ft x 1.5ft ?
so maybe 4 ft by 1.5 for the whole thing
but i'll stat small , get one hand working
or one clock i mean
Oh wow. That's big
then try move to one digit
Depends on how big the hands that come the clock mech is i guess!
but i'd image it would be big enough
a clock mechanisim is less than a dollar from china
Need at least another dollar for the motor
If I was happy with one clock hand, if i thought I could build the entire thing for $100 i'd probably do it
I hope you get it figured out, that will look awesome
I can't make React OS work, yet I can't destroy it. This is starting to feel like a curse.
@sturdy oyster the interface is one of the best parts ;D
Ho hum. Sitting here on the West coast, not at WMF like all the cool kids. Second most exciting thing for me today is a new cap from the coolest/geekiest place on Earth!
@indigo jetty sweet video btw 😃 will update my strings :3
Best part for a Web designer @abstract violet !
Thanks! I thought you might like it OK!
These videos don't tend to do very well unfortunately, well in comparison to some others
Thanks!
In better news, I got in touch with some of the people who used my YouTube API library and asked for permission to use some clips in an upcoming video and they all came back very quickly and said yes
Yes, very nicely done @indigo jetty I hadn't ever heard of doing the page like that. I like the quick concise format of the video as well
Anybody working on any cool projects this weekend?
So, in the two hours since I posted, I have managed to position two buttons and a text box. lol I hate layouts.
@sturdy oyster Cool projects this weekend: working on my soldering backlog; designing new high power rockets; double checking the rocket flight computer I built and programmed; tearing into the CircuitPython source for the NeoPixel low-level driver; and starting a design spec for highly distributed AI algorithms (this weekend, high dimensionality distance calculations for similarity algorithms).
You, aparently, are doing interface layouts. 😃
@polar wraith I am indeed. Your weekend sounds much more interesting.
I dunno, @sturdy oyster , I'm a bit intimidated by the CPy source. It's been a while.... Oh, and I need to work on my Discord bot for Adafruit. 😃
Scott's (the company, not the engineer) gel-based superglue works really well on plastic, but not so hot with ceramic.
Broke two fans, a mouse, and a coffee cup this morning. Just getting started, really. Call me "Nibiru"
Hey look, I stared doing something more with my life then watching YouTube all day!
I finally cleaned my basement! Halfway there.
And I was planning to get a lot done today. Silly boy. Make is streaming World Maker Faire on YouTube.
Does anyone know what this game is called? It's like Zuma, but with bugs. And I THINK you played as a ladybug. You could also play the game on the start screen.
It's been years, and I can't remember what it's called.
Yes, it's Nyan Cat but with a NAND gate as a body. Funny stuff. More on binary logic gates and dominoes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpLU__bhu2w The 'Mic...
@abstract violet the fazer is coming xmas chocolate bar
I found out what the game's called. It's Tumblebugs.
Even though I never really use my current printer, I really want a prussa mk3 😋
I wont be getting either 😃
How can you decode C++? Whenever I open the Minecraft Pi file in a text editor or something, it shows up as four cubes with zeros and ones inside.
Is there a program I can use?
You'll need to find the source code. I'm not super familiar with that project, but if you google "Minecraft pi source", it should be in the top few results.
I'm not having much luck with that.
🚀 news! United Launch Alliance is throwing a satellite up the hill tonight from Vandenberg AFB for the National Reconnaissance Office. Launch coverage starts at http://ulalaunch.com at 10:10 P.M Pacific, with the launch coming around 10:38 P.M. Pacific. Go Atlas!
Sounds awesome.
Those launches are usually pretty cool. Speaking of which, cryogenic fuel loading has just begun.
Adafruit definitely has the best captcha around.
@polar wraith I have worked on a few projects launced on Atlas V - amazing machines. The Centaur stage is ncredible in its abiltiy to place payloads in teh right attitude at release.
Have you witnessed any of them in person? I've yet to make it to a launch, always something came up.
(Usually, it was the next satellite, already pressing against schedule)
there is Aalto1 and aalto2 satellites in space
those are cubesats
Satellite technology creates new commercial opportunities, all the way from scientific research to telecommunications and retail. And they are already here, shaping the way we navigate, communicate and understand our planet in new ways. They are capable of for example observing the Arctic and Antarc...
@crude trench I have seen an Atlas V launch from Cape Canaveral but not one with my payloads. I have always been at the contol center for post lauch activation of the instruments instead of going to the lauch site itself.
@crude trench The TV view is much better anyway - viewing positions are a long way away at the Cape! Our last on had a camera on the Centaur so we could see satellites beiing released - very cool!
@ocean sigil some year you have a AR device and you watch it live in many angles
@spice moss maybe for the next missions, but they are for someone else. I'll be retired before we do another one 😃
Hey, how do you change the resolution size of Raspbian?
Does anyone here have any experience/knowledge of getting Cygwin/X to do hardware OpenGL acceleration with a remote client?
Thank you.
You're welcome. It'll reboot after you pick a resolution, so don't pick a terrible one haha
I hope I didn't. That would be annoying to fix.
lol yeah, not fun if it's like 640x480
Yeahm just switch around till you find one you like
I can't change it anynore. The button won't click.
just use arrow keys
hit tab until it's highlighted
Nice!
And I also figured out what was causing the weird Window bug with Minecraff Pi!
Two birds with one stone, right there.
Well there ya go! You can mod minecraft with Python btw, if you want to explore that.
I know. I decided to try and make my own little updates and patches, since this version is abandoned.
I'm not making good progress, so far. But I'm getting somewhere.
good deal. The same mods work on pocket edition only on the Android version though
Yep.
Although I don't think it will, anymore. Since they made most editions the same.
As well as making the long overdue, Minecraft 3ds edition.
@sturdy oyster great video! I think it would be a good idea to post your code on your description
And you should post it up here, especially now that it's using CP
Also for the Web page, I find using bootstrap is a good way of managing layouts and styling etc pretty easily
Real web designers such as @abstract violet would probably cry to see another bootstrap site, but us mere mortals have to make do with what we can 😂
Thanks for checking it out @indigo jetty! I'll have to take a look at that link. I think I have the layout pretty well down now. I just need to adjust the colors and make some tweaks to make it look halfway decent. Once I get the code cleaned up, and readable I'll be sure to post it.
@indigo jetty Heheh it's more practical and efficient and I think more useful if you're intending to have other people contribute but for something simple its nice to be able to DIY from scratch
wait we have a channel for this now
..which one?
@sturdy oyster a guy I used to work with had a saying, if your not a little bit ashamed to show your code your releasing too late 😂
I just think it's a good habit to get into, even if it's not your final solution. Maybe someone who is knowledgeable can give some pointers, but the more likely scenario is someone will learn from it!
Like for example I'm relatively experienced in Arduino , but I know pretty much nothing about cp. I know what's involved in building your project in Arduino but would be interestes to see how it could be implemented in cp
Maybe it's just me but I really like when people post their code, good bad or indifferent
Sometimes it is hard to do as you feel like your putting yourself out there to be judged but it gets easier and easier!
@indigo jetty Oh, I don't mind putting it up. I'll post it. It will probably be later this week, There's still a lot of test code in there that needs to be cut out, and I would like to comment it some as well. Right now it just wouldn't be very intuitive for anyone looking at it with all the random CSS tags and hacky code bits.
That's a good way to look at it though. It can be a little intimidating at times.
@bold turtle I got the goods.
@tiny moat YAY!
I don't have a great spot to put stickers yet, but I will figure something out during shop rebuild.
Rainbow Adafruit stickers! Are they pride themed or just rainbow?
@rough parrot Theoretically, Pride, but also Pretty
( @stuck moth thanks for being my remote operative 😉 )
That's cool! I guess Adafruit is LGBT friendly! (Although I could have guessed that already, they seem really nice)
We definitely are @rough parrot. @bold turtle had the stickers made
(now time for bed.) talk with you all tomorrow until I'm on a ✈
Nini @stuck moth
@stuck moth Glad to hear it!
Especially considering Pyrrhis Productions is run by to people who are part of the LGBT community!
@rough parrot Technically?
Yeah, we're not any of the main 3, but we're still part of the community
We're both ace and one of us is trans.
I guess it's a good thing we're already in #general-chat lol
Yeah, that was the confusing bit
Haha, sorry about that. Some people just say we wouldn't be part of the community... for some reason
... my response to that would get me spanked by the bot.
😆 Glad to hear you're supportive!
Y'all, this is an aggressively inclusive community. Speaking for the community, you're welcome here.
I'm a little bit excited. I got an order fro Adafruit today that contained Feather M0 Express boards. I soldered them up, along with a few Doublers, and started tinkering. I put the busio and register libraries in /lib. Then I put the DS3231 RTC on, and loaded up that driver. It fit. And it worked. Then I put on a 128x32 OLED wing, put the ssd1306 driver in /lib. It fit. And it worked. Now I have a basic functioning clock in CircuitPython. Hmmmm. Time to order another set of the sensors for the rocket fight computer and see if I can continue fitting everything on the Feather. If I can get the GPS code, the LoRa Wing driver, the BNO055 driver, and the BMP280 driver to work I can go back to CircuitPython for the rocket flight computer!
It's working so far.... 😃
@polar wraith Nice! Also "Aggressively inclusive" is perfect
here is the movie music video what i went to see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iADJzARx2w
"Wonderman", the brand new single and theme song from the movie "Rendel" out now! Taken from the upcoming album "Dark Matters" (October 6, 2017). Expand for ...
@bold turtle yay it has the bear colours too!
@polar wraith Awesome! Are you building a backup one as well :D?
@abstract violet Oh yes. There will be two systems on every flight.
@polar wraith have you decided on a name for your space ship 😃
Not the first one that I'm starting next weekend. The second one is Giddyup II, and the third one is Dark Energy I.
Dark Matter I is mine
@spice moss building a rocket too?
it's the drone
for me
well my drones are different type so it might be but not using rocket science
@spice moss a drone that can open a rift in spacetime
have you seen that one show where they went to moon with alien escape pod
if i can find the away to levitate and then fly like in star wars that would help
can't say I recall a show/movie with that description
With Ben Brooks, Craig Vye, Sallyanne Law, Hilary Mason. Whilst on holiday, two boys find the skeleton of a Roman centurion in a cave. Buried with him is an unusual 'pod' which turns out to be a flying machine with incredible abilities. Will they hand it over to the authorities to study, or keep it for themselves and find out what it can do by trial and error?
Blade Runner Black Out 2022 anime to debut worldwide* FIRST ON CRUNCHYROLL on September 26! Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is a new and highly-anticipated anime...
I looked at #circuitpython-dev and saw french and for a second thought I was on mastodon
(my instance, including a majority of the mods, is native french speaking)
I... can’t find the box that had all my HAB stuff in it. I haven’t been able to look much but I have a sinking feeling my wife saw a cardboard box on the floor and “cleaned up”
Time to head back to my own SEM...
@tiny moat Oh cool, so we're back to streaming tonight? 😃
Wait is your live stream called SEMantics, and if not, what do you have to say for yourself
sem from the plane
@elfin wave I mean I am not the punnyist person in the world...
I guess I put all my stat points into Wordplay instead of Awesome Science Stuff
Every party needs a bard though
(* old bard saying, not shared by literally anyone else)
Update: found the box! My house is a mess. Kids, man.
Speaking of "the" Bard....when I start posting in twitter, I intend on doing it all "accidental" iambic pentameter. 😃
Little mental exercise for each post 😃
I saw these books on display in the window at my neighborhood bookstore and thought of the audio channels here.
Anyone have any recommendations for an inexpensive analog windvane? Cheapest thing I can find is windvane/anemometer combos for ~$100
Can anyone guess what this set up will be for?
Stop motion with legos?
Nope. Sort of close.
https://youtu.be/U49E3XnYzjg I decided to do this.
I have no idea what I'm doing. Also it's terrible.
For some reason.
I need better lighting, my god this was terrible.
@tulip patrol The cheapest I've found is for about 75 bucks on SparkFun.
@polar wraith Yeah... and that's another combo one. I found the part number for the pot used as a sensor in the $100 one... so I might just buy one and rig my own vane. Grrrr.
My previous attempt at a wind vane is a somewhat dismal failure.
I need to mount it on top of a wingsail, so small and light is a major selling point.
Oooh, check Defender. (defender.com) They have all kinds of mast-mounted instruments you could adapt!
Drastically off topic, but because I don't want people wondering: I'm going to be less active than normal for a bit while dealing with some medical stuff that's got me all kinds of wonky due to painkillers and steroids.
That's OK. I hope you're doing fine.
@bold turtle Thank you for letting us know. I wish you the best recovery possible. I know those things can be incredibly difficult to deal with.
@bold turtle Get well soon! The forums need you.
Sooooooooooo I come back home, and internet is down. I will be dealing with Comcast tomorrow, hopefully in time for show and tell...
@tiny moat Booooo. 😦
Good morning everyone! I dug out my autonomous rover project last night (named Laika). I didn't realize how long ago I started building it. The sensors and boards are ... dated. So now I've started redesign work given what I learned from building the first one. Here's the parts list so far:
Laika...rover. I see what you did there ;)
Looks like an interesting project. What kind of chassis will it have?
A golf cart is too big - I need about half that, so I'm planning to mill the frame and motor mounts out of aluminum on the Tormach CNC at work.
Oh wow. That's much bigger than I expected. Awesome
Smaller is more problematic since I'm trying to build something as close to a Mars rover as I can without sending it to Mars. That's why the GPS is labeled "cheating". 😃 I want to use the wheel turn rate, circumference, and rotary encoders to calculate a position. My plan is to let it loose outside and see how long it can run around. 😃
Smaler = harder to get over obstacles.
The wheel sensing is a tough but to crack. I'm working on that now on a MUCH smaller scale. Raspberry pi has a tough time doing all four accurately. Especially with all the other processing it will be doing. Are you going to be using a separate board to minitor/control propulsion?
And i thought programming lights was hard..... (im a total noob hahaha)
Yes, I have three RPi3 on board - one to collect and transmit science data, one purely for navigation control, and one for hazard avoidance.
Ah cool. I'll be using a huzzah for motor control.
With a central ok for the "brain"
Pi
Ive bean learning the joins of a teensy 3.2 lately
Yeah, I thought about that but I want the extra processing power if needed. I have to juggle eight motors (six for the wheel hubs, one for the front axle angle, and one for the rear axle angle)
cool @soft thicket Once you can program lights, you just about have it. From there it's really the same thng in various degrees of complexity.
mhmmmm. Im using FastLed
I hadn't thought of it that way, but yeah.
well @polar wraith. Like I said, mine is much smaller scale. It's really just to test a bunch of ideas like openCV and such. I'll be interested to see how ours comes along.
*yours
I already have the core code working. I just need to port it to the RPi3 from the RPi2, use WiFi as the onboard communication system, and wire the electroniccs back in. I'm sorta thinking about building my own science platform PCB, though, with most of the electronics soldered in directly.
Wooo!! didnt melt my hall effect sensor while i soldered wires to it hahaha
@soft thicket Soldering skills FTW!
Will you be posting updates anywhere?
lol. i mean, ive done a lot worse for soldering hahaha
@sturdy oyster Show and Tell, and I've been meaning to resurrect my blog now that I have my own domain and SharePoint site set up.
<@&355854283410898955> anyone up for PUBG today? I'm back from maker faire and could go for a few games.
i tried to play a round of it this morning with a buddy. I suck at that game hahaha.
@soft thicket want me to add you to the multiplayer-gaming role so I can ping you about it?
sure!
done
might not play anything today unless i need a break. im trying to get a bit more done with programming my leds
I got TONS of games though. mostly on my PC but got some on my xbox one
I've got both too
Cool!
@stuck moth What other games get played? I'm generally not a competitive gamer, but I do like playing with people that aren't terrible human beings.
@proven olive all PUBG so far. any others you like?
Im not really competitive but i become competitive sometimes when im playing
@proven olive if you turn all chat off pubg is pretty pleasant!
yeah, I turned it off pretty quickly
@indigo jetty Eh, I'm TERRIBLE at FPS games anyway, so it gets really frustrating and un-fun really quickly.
Unless it's all vs AI
My current "Multiplayer" game is Stellaris.
I enjoy Titan Fall 2 and occasionally Battlefield 1 if i have a fun squad!
@proven olive Speaking of which, did you see the OpenAI ANN vs. humans at Doka?
I did not!
I don't know what the US servers are like but eu servers are very, eh, unfriendly (to put it mildly)
The AI whooped on all of them, including the current champions.
@indigo jetty I quickly turned it off on the US servers
Pubg can be a hide an seek game if you want
yeah you do that immediately
Typo - Dota... https://blog.openai.com/dota-2/
We've created a bot which beats the world's top professionals at 1v1 matches of Dota 2 under standard tournament rules. The bot learned the game from scratch by self-play, and does not use imitation learning or tree search. This is a step towards building AI systems which accomplish well-defined goals
My favorite thing that I've seen with PUBG was a guy or two who were in a car. Managed to roll it onto its side when going against the last group of people.
Nobody else realized there was anyone in the car, so they just sat there and at the end just hopped out, shot a guy or to, and won
Annominity sure seems to bring out the worst of people
It really does
mhmm. thats why when i was REALLY good at Black Ops 2 on PS3 id be silent at times and people would make fun my My Little Pony emblem at the time. Id wipe the board and absolutely DESTROY their entire team. And then come back like "so what were you saying about my emblem?"
ohhhhh good times
@soft thicket MLP emblem? Have you ever been to BronyCon?
@proven olive I saw that video!
Nah i never got to go. been out of the fandom for almost 2 years
I just thought your name looked familiar, is all
the funny thing is that I still don't consider myself anonymous. "Sigafoos" is me (especially because it's tied to my real name in enough ways that it's easy to de-anonymize me)
I've been using "Andon" since at least 1999. Probably 1998.
@soft thicket A version of that IRL... I know a USMC Gunnery Sgt. who got his first tatoo on his bicep. PowderPuff Girls. Dude is MARSOC (special operations), stone cold killer, about 6'3" and like 260 - all muscle. Everyone was like, "um, um, nice tat, Gunny."
Hahahahaha
lol
It took 16 years to wear out this t-shirt. Do you think it’s time for an upgrade? Vista perhaps?
@thin canopy Let me know. I'll hook you right up. 😃
@polar wraith Wish I still had my DOS 1.1 t-shirt.
I haven't been here that long. I only have two Microsoft T-shirts. One with just the Microsoft logo and one from Hack-A-Thon.
I picked up one at the SF Micro Faire in 1981. Very poor quality fabric. Didn't improve until MS-DOS 3.1. 😉
Bumped into Bill G. at that conference. Literally. Me: "Sorry." BG: " "
Skip Vista, find a Win 7 shirt. The Vista shirt would just mess up everything else in the laundry.
It'd be the one that bleeds a lot and makes all your white shirts pink
I hae Silverlight, Windows Insider what have 10 in the back, Microsoft Build, DevShark and Microsoft HoloLens shirt
Good luck finding any other clothes that match with it too! (referencing the infamous driver issues with Vista)
All good points. Perhaps it's time to just wear the Penguin.
Penguin logo on the front, a list of a few commands and switches in 4pt font filling the back.
I got an Android shirt years ago at an I/O event. Still hasn't been updated
@stuck moth when hacking webcam https://youtu.be/p3h8ZnXLsRg
quick test
test failed
Apologies for this not being an adafruit question, but does anyone know of an alternative (non-sketchy) source for Dragonboard 410C? 12-14 week back order on Arrow and I need it soon for a project :/
Working check it for what? 😉
for rocket
https://www.esri.com/about/newsroom/publications/wherenext/new-business-intelligence-emerges-geo-ai/
Geospatial artificial intelligence or Geo.AI, a form of machine learning based on geography, is an emerging new business intelligence. Dramatic improvements promise even greater insight.
when you look for your rocket
ESRI tools required a network connection...
not all
Rocket electronics update: the Ultimate GPS driver for CircuitPython is coming along nicely. Successfully reads and echos NMEA sentences from the GPS. Working on a dict-based function lookup based on NMEA sentence identifier, then automatically calling the function. GAA is done, now working on the other common five sentences.
I contacted 4 pretty big youtubers in the last week about using a couple of seconds of clips of theirs in my videos and all of them came back super quick and said yes. I wonder is it a maker thing, are we just a friendly accomadating bunch?
(I know I probably didnt need to, but I woudn't feel right about doing it without it)
You have respect for the work of other people
Cause i understand how much work goes into it!
a person isnt much without values alright!
@indigo jetty We call people like that "Politicians"
😃
Also, I do get the feeling that makers are generally a really nice and welcoming bunch.
@polar wraith Have you tested the Ultimate GPS under thrust? It doesn't look or cost like a high-dynamic GPS, so I assume it wouldn't work during that flight regime (and for a while after MECO)
@tulip patrol Excellent point! I am using the BNO055 IMU and BMP280 for fight control. The GPS is only for transmitting the rocket location after landing.
As for testing, I'll be flying the avionics in the payload bay of other rockets to see how they behave under actual flight conditions.
@polar wraith That's a really great way to test it.
The IMU won't work terribly well during boost and immediately after MECO, for similar reasons. HPR motors run really rough, which plays merry hob with the MEMS components.
Agreed. I don't have the IMU in control yet; I want to test it under flight conditions before I make assumptions. I have tested the BMP280, though, and am confident it will detect both apogee (for drogue deployment) and a pre-programmed altitude AGL (for mains deployment).
That's true as long as you aren't transonic or above.
Well, it's definitely not going to be in that regime at apogee or while falling under drogue....
What about during boost? That's where you get problems using baro for apogee detection.
I'll have to test it on a Mach 1+ bird to make sure it won't deploy either during supersonic or transonic flight, since that would destroy the rocket.
Alternatively, I can program it with a table of motors and burn rates, then only arm the deployment charges during coast phase.
My Level 2 design is definitely supersonic....
Another way I've heard of is monitoring acceleration -- when in supersonic flight, you are either accelerating quickly or decelerating quickly.
That's why I wanted the IMU - as a backup to the barometer. I haven't figured out the programming for it, though, and, like you said, I need to test it thoroughly before putting it "in charge" of a rocket.
are you trying to determine mach, altitude, or both?
Sounds like an awsome project. Where are you flying?
Mayfield, WA, LDRS '18 in CA, and Black Rock Desert in NV.
Are you on the aRocket list?
@ancient rivet Altitude. I'm calculating Mach by simulation.
@tulip patrol No, I'm just getting started. My Level 1 Cert rocket kit is arriving tomorrow!
What's the aRocket list?
is there a typical way it's (altitude) done with these rockets?
@ancient rivet Barometric altimeter is the way I always see it done.
It's a mailing list for people who do amateur and startup rocket development.
@polar wraith Are we going to have an unboxing video ? 🤓
Timers used to be popular, because you can make a reasonable guess at the timing of apogee. Also, integrating acceleration along the long axis.
how do they compensate for velocity? baro will basically be a static pressure measurement, which will change with velocity
@static charm Hum. I hadn't thought of that! I could definitely make an unboxing video.
It would be great 😋
@ancient rivet I'm not sure. It's something I need to figure out!
A static port in incompressible flow will give you a solid continous read on altitude. When it stops going up and starts going down, you've reached apogee. However, the shifting shocks during transonic and supersonic flight can wreck that.
Ok. I'll definitely have to test fly the avionics in supersonic rockets to profile the behavior correctly.
Proper static port placement is a per-vehicle business.
yeah. placement was more what i was talking about.
Every aircraft flying measures barometric altitude through a static port -- it can be done for supersonic flight.
@tulip patrol Research must be done. 😃
like you said. shocks. anyone tried a cone mounted pitot-static?
Dunno. I'll find out. I was thinking along those lines, too.

@spice moss Oh, yes, absolutely. Not much that applies to my own work, but yes, I did learn!
@ocean sigil Oh, thank you! I hadn't seen the orbital mechanics laid out. The way the astrodynamicists can maximize the spacecraft fuel load when it arrives at its destination is just ... wizardry!
it's magic
It really is, @spice moss !
well some gues could think i am a wizard as people think that i am on the orlando rignt now when i am not
So, what's everyone working on this weekend?
@sturdy oyster Starting a high power rocket build, working on the CircuitPython Ulitmate GPS and BMP280 drivers, and building the power supply for my rover project. And doing groceries and laundry. 😃
@sturdy oyster I found out that I should have the house to myself Sunday for a few hours so will be working on video for flashing the Bluetooth module with hid
Hopefully will get it it finished, but not confident!
I'm either going to try to get this nfc reader working or continue porting over my HAB code to the metro (still arduino; maybe CP later)
I build robots in teh weekend
I have some client work to do... and I need to start transfering blog posts over to my group's new site
"Since the 1950s, when electronics and plastics were becoming common consumer products, we've used a linear lifecycle plan for new designs: natural resources to raw materials to manufactured products to consumer use to landfill. But isn't there a better way? Of course!"

It's one of the things of being a maker, nearly all electronics have something useful in them, but its hard to store all this stuff!
Oh boy. I have a rocket. Waiting to unpack it so I can make an unboxing video. 😃
<@&355854283410898955> anybody have time for PUBG in the next few hours?
not cuphead?
nope
I'm on now @stuck moth with the guy you were playing with the last time if you want to play?
@indigo jetty how long will you be on? it'll take me a little while to get going
kk, thanks! I'm still wrapping up some code
message though when your on, I've been known to be very stupid with going to bed in the past 😛
haha, ok. maybe I'll take a break then 😃
The ultimate spoop.
I really wish @night crescent would start letting me use USPS shipping again.....I just cannot justify $13 shipping on an $8 order.
I hates the UPS... hates it I do!
@shut berry Digikey carries most of Adafruit's stuff and it has more shipping options than Adafruit does. You might want to consider that for orders
I usually cluster my project orders together and order on Wednesday nights with the discount code. It saves 10% which helps me rationalize ordering parts when I'm not thinking about shill as much.
https://youtu.be/SWqpLWBa9F0 hmm so cool

@ocean ingot yeah. That's what I usually end up doing too, but it's just not the same.
either that, or buy a similar board off Amazon with free shipping
@sturdy oyster I often find the Adafruit boards on Amazon. A little more expensive, but not super expensive

Well there Dirt Cheap now, Just buy a new one or a 50$ andriod phone, there getting better
ok can you replace the wifi chip with a heat gun or something?
oh cool @polar wraith watching it now!
not those 20$ ones at Walmart, a real heat blower that's meant for chip removal
whatching what?

@spice moss Sometimes as a 'failsafe' if you connect android devices to a power supply, and then hold down the magic button combination to enter the bootloader it'll power on
Maybe you got to hold one of the volume buttons and teh power button
@spice moss Press "Volume Down" -> "Power", hold "Volume Down" and leave Power buttons pressed till device boots
thats what most android devices use to get into the bootloader

Hi @polar wraith thanks a lot for sharing this moment with us, great video
So what about videos on mounting the rocket ? 😋
A live stream for the lounching would be great realy 😄
I've never seen video steamed live from the rocket, only after the fact. But yes, I'll live stream the launches!
agree
@polar wraith I had the idea a while back to put a 360 camera on a rocket and launch it. Would be an interesting view!
I agree!
Everything today is FABULOOOUUUUUUS~~
Good heavens, vacuum-rated PC104 electronics for CubeSats are outrageously expensive....
Oh my.
What's that used for ?
@static charm What "that"? 😃
@polar wraith PC104
Ah, @static charm , it's an industrial computer standard that's been around for 25 years. They're used in certain satellites...
Ahhh okay
I see
@polar wraith I've seen the guys of Hak5 using an electronic card equiped with accelorometer and stuff like that for a drone they made, is it a similar equipement ?
@polar wraith Adding the word vacuum to anything instantly 10X-100xs the price....
No, not really. The PC104 is a square form factor computer board that's about 9 centimeters on a side. Too big for a drone. Unless it's a really really big drone. 😃
If your drone is runing pc104 you are doing something really wrong, while at the same time something really awsome.
@tiny moat I'm hoping I can build a satellite and outgas the components in the vacuum chamber at Goddard....
@polar wraith I can through a coulple of million nuetrons at that thing, and if you really need it, a few billion is not out of reach...
Also, how big of a chamber do you need?
About a meter square?
Timeline?
At least six months. Probably a year realistically.
And is that just a standard 10x10 then?
I should just be able to fit that with hardware on hand. What ultimate pressure do you need to go to?
Huh, not sure. LEO? 😃
LOL
Interstelar, that would be pushing things, but leo? Give me a break...
Err?
typo...
I can hit 10e-4 and a half no problem, might even be able to go to -5, but with the thing outgassing it might be a problem...
thinking about pumping rate, probably can maintain -4 and go down from there as it outgasses.
Yeah, that's why I was going to go straight to the NASA facility.
But my primary concern is outgassing of COTS hardware.
Like, can I even fly something that's not rad hardened or designed for vacuum?
And there is no need for certifications issues, authorisations... things like that to send something in orbite ?
Oh yes. That's for later, though.
The satellite needs to be tested and cleared for flight as secondary or tertiary payload.
How goes the SEM, @tiny moat ?
Getting the funding is going to be a challenge!
@polar wraith Interesting... I am getting the e- gun rebuilt tonight, and the vacuum leaks tomorrow.
Out gas overnight sunday, and back in opperation monday, in therory.
Nice! I am impressed at your knowledge and skills...
If the project has financial repercussions the funds should not be a problem
It's really a learning platform for a more ambitious project involving full scale satellites...
Which is why I have the operations manuals for the Falcon 9, Ariane, Soyuz, Vega, Delta, and Atlas boosters... Still a lot to learn!
My father in law worked for NASA his entire career. Worked on Skylab, Hubble, and Chandra.
Laurent Voulzy is a French singer he said ; "Il faut faire de grands rêves pour ne pas les perdre de vue quand on grandit" it means "We must make big dreams not to lose sight of them when we grow up"
@tiny moat I'm excited to see the bits you got in NY in the SEM....
I have to get some fuming nitric acid first...
@keen hedge Very cool! Chandra is a great platform!
Just be careful with that stuff, Adam.... I mean, I know you will be, but....
My father, getting right the point, asked my fiance a few days after meeting her: "So what do you bring to the family gene pool?" Without missing a beat, she said: "well, my father's a rocket scientist."
Lol
Well said!
Goodness, @tiny moat , I just caught up on your twitter feed. You've been busy!
Oh yeah...
Part of the reason PC-104 stuff is really expensive these days is because mfgs assume anyone still using it is locked in somehow and can therefore be bent over a barrel.
@tulip patrol Try the space-rated stuff... Ouch.
For example, 14,000 dollars for a GPS module...
could you make adafruit gps module space-rated?
No, they're altitude-restricted...
Ain't ITAR a PITA?
@spice moss Now that's a slick little beast... two or three of them would drive even quite a substantial surface vessel.
I'd like to see something on how they designed the prop & nozzle, tho
Lets strap some to my Mavic Pro!!!!
ayone around for pubg? <@&355854283410898955>
Sorry, gotta be up early for work
thats ok @gray aspen
@stuck moth would if i wasnt exhausted already. lack of sleep and work got me today. plus i gotta spend most of my day tomorrow checking code possibly and getting ready for my teensy audio adapter to come tomorrow. And my nerf gun will be here on tuesday so i wanna try and get as much done as i can before show and tell
😃 sounds good @soft thicket
i mean, at the moment my lights look good :3
I ♥ NeoPixels. I can't remember the last time I actually had my overhead lights on in my bedroom or bathroom. NeoPixels are plenty bright enough (especially 360 of them!)
I bought a 5m roll of ws2812B leds at 60/m and it was just under $40 and I love playing with them. I wanna put some on the shelf hanging over my bed and control them with a feather but I want them to be sound reactive to my pc but I don't think it's possible unless someone has done it. I'm not that skilled in programming yet
That should totally be doable!!!
@soft thicket Someone has, I've seen videos of it. I don't remember specifically where though.
Ahhh. I've tried looking. PaintYourDragon has something similar I believe but it uses dotstars and I don't have those. Nor can I afford them right now
So while I am working on the SEM tonight, I wont be doing a stream tonight. I have a head cold/sore throat that I am getting over, and I dont want to push my voice to far. I did that once already, and it did no good for anyone...
@tiny moat Feel better soon. Best to rest, it always seems to heal faster that way.
@stray wind yeah, I messed that one up Friday...
@tiny moat Is everything reassembled and functional? I know you were putting a lot of work into getting things cleaned up.
@stray wind No, this contamination needs to be taken care of. This should look like the e- gun from yesterday.
@tiny moat Oi, yeah. That's from the loss of vacuum?
This looke like this when I got it, but the outgassing from it would result in a degraded vacuum around the gun.
Ahh
But yeah, that is how it got like this. Brown deopsition mean oxidation and a bad vacuum. Blue deposition is what you want to see.
This is what it looks like now.
I hope you feel better soon, @tiny moat !
Get well @tiny moat ! The world needs your feeds.
@thin canopy @polar wraith Thanks! I definitely want to get back to streaming soon.
@tiny moat feeds (and cats) help stave off cleansing thermonuclear fire.
Wow!!!! That looks SO much better!!!
Yeah, very happy with this.
Holy cow!
Up next...
Solvent, or just elbow grease?
Magic is good. 😃
More previously un-known bad vacuum seals...
@tiny moat I was like are you building quantum computer?
@tiny moat now think if you make a quantum computer to do SEM
Microsoft is working to build the world’s first, truly scalable quantum computer.
YAY I came home to new toys and STEEKERZ!
Steekerz are good!!! I'll be coming home to "new" toys tomorrow!!!!!!! then a MASSIVE grind till Show and Tell
Does anyone perhaps know how to stop the Discord invite glitch? Discord sometimes does this thing where every invite for a server becomes expired. Even fresh ones, or ones set to "Never expire"

You know what? I'm sick of the fact that I can only fit two hard disks into the React OS machine. I'm gonna do something about that.
Here's some stuff I got from the machine in the progress of trying to fit in more drives.
Minding the little one @stuck moth so a no from me
Woo hoo! Yard sale find today was a pair of Da-Lite tripods for a background drop. Now all I need is to manufacture a crossbar and get the green screen material. 😃
Turns out the machine doesn't like it very much when it's floppy drive is missing.
I think when you pull a floppy drive from an old machine, the POST tests for A: drive which you will have to disable in the BIOS.

Isn't it something wonderful when your hobby can generate income? 😃
@grave crest sure is. Not speaking from experience. Well other than my old PC building/support days. But that wasn't fun for long lol.
I don't count that. Lol
I used to do that too -- computer repair. Started as a hobby. Then turned into a bit of extra income. Then I was working way too long, way too hard, on problems that stemmed from "I'm too cheap to buy the right thing", and then I was on the hook for literally any issue they had. Since obviously my work caused it.
Now, I just say "I work on servers." Which isn't too far from the truth (SANs and NASes are "servers" in their eyes)....and I then say "I don't handle consumer electronics. If I have an issue, I send it to our IT department to fix."
Which isn't a lie. But also, google. Please folks, use google. That's what I do. 😃
@grave crest that's essential what happened to me as well. I am enterprise IT stuff now as well.
Now my hobbies are more artistic -- oil painting. I'm still working on my Bob Ross 'fro 😉
Does anyone have recommendations for an external wifi card?
that was recommend to me at a con, I have the infamous TL-WN722N (1.0-the monitor mode capable one), thinking about upgrading
@ebon temple What do you want to do with it?
the fun stuff that comes with monitor mode 😃
the 802.11a/g/b/n part of that alfa one is really cool
I'm not sure what current ones support it... I haven't been doing any of that, so I've been buying the "whatever is cheap at Fry's" model 😃
Today's fun: the magnetometer in the IMU on my Beaglebone Blue will turn on in raw mode but not sensor fusion mode. Grrrrr.
Oh my.

felt like there is RadioFruit/AdaShack in Finland
@indigo jetty I assume it was very windy but did you suffer damage from Ophelia?
@fair summit still happening at the moment. Where I work (Galway) seems to be worse than where I live (Athlone), but I'm working from home today
Lots of houses without power (200k, which is a significant percentage of houses in Ireland)
Glad you still have power, and that you don't have to go out!
But thankfully everyone I know is safe and sound so far!
Cheers for the concern! I wouldn't have thought it would be news over there
The US journalists I follow on Twitter have been paying attention, and the very unusual origin location of the storm also brought news (much further northeast than any other recorded hurricane). And we are paying a lot of attention to hurricanes due to the succession of them here.
Houses without power has been bumped to 360k, which is close to 1/4 of the houses in Ireland
I saw videos of trucks delivering water to houses, I guess because the well pumps were out.
Yeah it's unusual for us for sure
hope things continue OK for you. I'll keep an eye out. Scotland will also be hit (another place with fond memories for us)
sorry I've been quiet! was on vacation last week
you'd think that would translate into lots of PUBG but instead I was playing solo borderlands the presequel, because I'm weird
(but also the more arcade-y style was a nice break)
Now I'm without power!
I'm searching for the place in the house with the best cell coverage!
@indigo jetty Good luck! I hope power is restored soon. Throughtout the region!
Mine came back an hour or two ago thankfully!
So I've been practicing with LMMS. Not going great, so far.

Offtopic question: Anyone here use the 2017 Macbook (non-pro. any of the cpus...m3, i5, i7)? I have some questions as to the day to day usability of it for making/DIY tasks -- considering getting one myself as a much more mobile replacement to a 2013 15" macbook pro.
@viscid folio Utimate traveing salesman problem (Iost power last night, so just catching up on AAE): perhaps a genetic algorithm for optimizing the pick and place? 1/2 😃
@grave crest @tranquil sedge has a macbook but not a 2017
So I drew something
yeah @grave crest I have a 2016 macbook 12" with the core i5 and 512mb SSD.. i'm a bit mixed on it. the form factor and size are perfect. it's barely 2lbs and super tiny, never once have I regretted throwing it in a bag. you just forget it's there and never worry about lugging around a laptop again. the screen is beautiful and really nice with high resolution like a modern phone or tablet. the only big con is the one port.. it really is a pain. day to day it isn't bad, but absolutely expect to buy the $70 multiport adapter from apple (with old USB, HDMI and power / USB-C in). USB-C in general is a big giant mess I've found, particularly with power adapters.. it's really hard to find good quality USB-C stuff that complies with the spec and works. like off-brand non-apple multiport adapters are a big gamble--check amazon reviews and lots of issues like sometimes they won't work or sometimes they don't charge through them, etc. in the end I grin an bear it because there really isn't anything else as small and nicely built as this machine. maybe a dell XPS 13 would be a good alternative but they're getting bad about linux support on those recently
and now i've found i need not only the HDMI multiport adapter but the VGA one too... doing presentations the last two have not had a DVI or HDMI input.. so more dongles to get and carry :/
@tranquil sedge Thank you -- your sentiments mirror a lot of what I've considered and read from others. It's seems to have an over-reliance on dongles, though I need something much more portable than a 15" mbp. Is that the same macbook that had thermal issues at MakerFaire?
If I could ask, at what point did you feel you were stressing the capabilities of the system (either unexpectedly...or intentionally pushing it to do stuff it might not be designed for)?
yep same machine.. lack of fan I found is a con in 90 degree heat 😃
i've never had thermal issues before though with it
i think just the extreme weather pushed it over the edge, and being in the sun
i really never feel it being stressed heavily. i haven't tried to edit video on it, but for basic things like compiling a big source tree it's plenty fast
i did go for the core i5 because I read the i7 really doesn't give you much more, it's still just dual core but a bit faster and hotter.. the i5 was the sweet spot at the time
for dongles i just found this one that looks interesting and ordered it, will take my chances since zero reviews and looks a bit sketchy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07688W7W8
but perhaps that could be one dongle to rule them all
Hmm, I've always been wary of third party dongles. I've even had StarTech thunderbolt-vga adapters go on the fritz, and they're a solid, respected IT brand. I hope you have good luck with it.
(and if you do, I might mirror the purchase)
yep same here, it's a gamble 😃
I'm considering the 2017 Macbook, probably i5 or i7. Without a doubt 16gb ram. On the go, I wouldn't be doing that much heavy work. Even now, all I have open are a few browser tabs (too many of course), onenote, discord, tweetbot.
Once in a while I open Lightroom for some photo organization, and once in a blue moon Photoshop to fill in the gaps where Lightroom isn't enough.
The lack of a fan is something that's very attractive, as I've had rather noisy laptops in the past for work and personal use.
yeah i just have 8gb ram and it's been solid for normal use
the other thing on the other end of the spectrum, i really like the look and idea of the latest asus 10" chromebook convertible
ooo, that's a tiny thing (just googled it)
Buy it on Amazon - http://lon.tv/zcwrs (affiliate link) - The Chromebook Flip C101PA looks and feels the same as last year's model but now has a faster proce...
yeah it's like $250 or so and much lower specs
but 10", 2 lbs and even flips into a tablet
in that review he had some weird quirks that apparently asus sent him a new one to try again
but it's an interesting thing--i liked chromeos and used it for a while
you can get a full linux environment
only thing is low memory usually, like 2 or 4gb at best
but that one is interesting because it can use android apps too
i have a feeling between chromeos, a crouton linux environment, and android you could do 90% of most laptop tasks
I've thought about ChromOS, and I absolutely think it's viable for many uses. I feel hesitant though for how I generally work, as I like the full OS experience. However, $250 is almost an impulse buy when compared to a $2k laptop+accessories.
I also have a 12.9" ipad, which convers a lot of bases as well....which I'm thinking would be a sweet second monitor to a Macbook (via the Duet app).
yeah the ipad pro is interesting to me, especially with ios 11.. it looks like a real workhorse machine now
I have iOS 11, and it really hasn't been a big change for me. And there are a plethora of little glitches everywhere, mostly with the UI.
I say if you're content with iOS 10, keep that until there's a definitive need to upgrade.
@adafruit have #CircuitPython so here is my implemention of the Rosie-CI what @tannewt have being created https://t.co/Z1W3YAlesw
speaking of Macbooks: A relative has a late 2011 Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive. She's complaining it's slow nowadays. I've ordered parts to upgrade it to 16GB RAM and a 500GB SSD, but I don't have a lot of experience with Macs. My impression is that the base CPU is fine, and that the recent MacOS versions really could use an SSD for better performance. Any comments?

Quite the classic
I'd agree with that @fair summit. Pretty much any i-series CPU could benefit greatly from an upgrade to 8+ gb of ram and an SSD.
pretty sure they add something like this in the OS scheduler:
delay(date.current() - HW_INCEPT_DATE);
I wouldn't spend the money or the time on a Core2Duo or earlier though
@grave crest Thanks, just checked: it is a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (i7-2675QM)
I think it was what you had to get to get a 15" screen.
I still long for the days when Apple carried 17" laptops
I still long for the day when Apple will just go away.
that can take a while
I think they will rather specialize in locked-down entertainment devices
@fair summit The greatest increase in performance I've ever had was switching to a SSD-only system
And that counts going from a windows 98 FrankenPuter to a pretty decent Windows Vista laptop.
Surfacebook 2 is available for 13" and 15"
@proven olive thanks - I think this upgrade will work out well.
Quadrupling the ram will be a big help too
I will never using a spinning disk again as a primary drive. Only SSDs. No hybrid/fusion drives, no secondary SSD cache for a primary spinning disk....nope. None of that.
Only place for a spinning disk is a low-cost/TB for 3rd tier storage, such as external hard drives (infrequently used) or for a NAS.
It is the single most noticable improvement one can make to their computer.
Adding 8gb+ of ram is the second best improvement, on a strictly hardware level.
(forgetting of course obvious things -- like replacing the CPU if it's something insanely under-specc'ed, such as using a 7-year old Celeron to do modern 3D rendering).
After SSD & RAM, I'd focus on input and output devices. Quality keyboards, mice/trackball/trackpad, and monitors will last through several systems.
Well then how come I've blown through three keyboards and two mice in the last four years? :)
They don't last either. Only the monitors seem to migrate from box to box.
😃 Usage may vary...Sometimes you get lucky with hardware. Generally buying quality goes a long way :)
For example -- my dad is still using an old Microsoft-branded Office 2000 keyboard that was released over 17 years ago.
...and I suddenly feel old saying that.
I recently found a keyboard that I like, took me 4 years.
Hopefully it will last.
For me keyboards and mice are the only things I never replace lightly
Usually they break at some point, and at that moment it's impossible to buy another one like it, so I have to suffer getting used to whatever new thing
@solar hamlet I absolutely know what you mean! When I find something I like, that I truly like....I immediately buy multiples of it and put them on a shelf. "Cold storage" as it is.
Even if it's the same product number, they could cheapen the quality in a few years. Too many companies are in a race to the bottom.
Then it only hurts more when you break the last one...
Usually by the point, I'd hope I'd find another. Or live without.
I'm going to really cry when Windows 7 is end of life'd.
yay open sourced!
This could be handy.
Are youtube links allowed? I made a video that shows what I plan to do eventually.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXYPVXMO10Q I'll just put it here. If you don't want it here, I'll gladly remove it.
It's official. I'm a terribe Drauga1 knock-off. I don't even have as much stuff available as he does. But maybe one day...
two old machines that have been used for YEARS: No bulging capacitors. Machine that's newer, and not used as much: A blown cap, and one that's possibly leaking. OK.
This is the keyboard I have and ❤ http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/code-keyboard/code-87-key-mechanical-keyboard-2070.html
I love it, I gotta get me one of these.
I just realised the price, so I'm gonna not do that.
It'll last a while though and I use it multiple hours every day. Well worth the price
@stuck moth Did you get an sound dampeners on that model, or was it stock?
I would love a mehanical keyboard. But I can't justify the cost. I have yet to have a (non-crappy, non-laptop) keyboard fail
@stuck moth What made you choose this mechanical keyboard over the plethora that are out there on the market?
(some days I feel paralyzed by an overabundance of choices)
I just grab really cheap ones from Dollarama. And sometimes a good set. My current being a Blackweb Mouse and Keyboard Wireless set up. Because who can resist a wireless keyboard that comes with a mouse?
@stuck moth mine is http://prohavit.com/products/hv-kb390l-low-profile-mechanical-keyboard/
I finally found a low-profile mechanical keyboard
it's super-clicky too
I prefer using old keyboards for that. This does look pretty good, though.
it's low-profile, which means the key travel is short and I don't need a wrist pad
I might have to check this out.
which were the two main gripes I had with mech keyboards
it also has stupid fancy light effects on the keys, but you can disable that
Nevermind. THey always overprice keyboards with lights.
shiny 😃
THey were selling keyboards at a local walmart for $250. It was just a regular keyboard with some LEDs in it.
this one is actually cheap for a mechanical keyboard
Good lord, this is the cheapest keyboard I've seen outside of Dollarama!
if you bought the switches yourself and tried to make it, you would pay more
China 😃
I might have to check this out. It has lights, right?
yes, blue
Awesome! Now I can finally use my keyboard in the dark! As soon as I get it.
I tend to look at the screen when typing
I prefer looking at my keyboard.
@grave crest don't remember anymore. I've been really happy with it. Use it more than the keyboard I made though the layout is a bit different
twitch have webhooks and more
I have the Corsair K70 Rapidfire. It changed how I type, but so much 💜 http://www.corsair.com/en-us/k70-rgb-rapidfire-mechanical-gaming-keyboard-cherry-mx-speed-rgb-na
I'll get a Topre keyboard next if I ever have to replace this.
topre? like typing on the backs of soft bunnies? 😃
lol. It's mechanical hybrid that you can actually set the actuation points for individual keys. So I suppose it could be soft like bunnies 😃
I'm sure there's people hoppy about that
So my garage door made it through the wind, but my modem didn't... It's refusing to properly startup now, this might be a fun night of dealing with Comcast.
@tiny moat I would much rather have to replace a modem instead of replacing a garage door
Considering what's in Adam's garage...
i'm jk
Also, no. Local comcast has never been an issue for us
@sturdy oyster @proven olive I am going to agree with Brad here, the fact that that was a concern should tell you something about it's current condition. It's not even designed to fit in the space it is in, there is about a foot gap on the top and a few inches on the sides. Who ever built this thing years and years ago really didn't care. At all.
That seems.... problematic
Ducktape and a tarp should make it workable.
Garage door springs....or comcast. Man, that really is a tough choice. Both instill utter terror.
Though to be 100% totally serious, garage door springs are to be taken as serious as a heart attack. Those things have so much power behind them...and if they release....and you're on the wrong end of them....it does not end well.
@grave crest Yeah, springs like that have incredible force
I'm a rabid DIY'er. Often times I bite off more than I can chew. When I was a kid, I saw a garage door spring come off....and literally go through the back of our garage.. Now, anytime dealing with a garage door spring, I immediately go hands off. I call in a professional.
"NOPE! I'm done."
I've done that a handful of times. Nothing quite so exreme, but just the "This does NOT need to be done by me" sentiment
Such a profound, visceral reaction too.
(since this is offtopic -- I so wish Discord for OSX allowed spellcheck's underlining and right-click correction)
@grave crest You mention garage springs and I come across this
Hot coiling of large-diameter rod after electro-galvanization.
I wonder what sort of power THOSE have
that fire at the end....as if they couldn't get any more terrifying.
Yeah, isn't it just the most calming thing?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmJC3KZ1D9w Watch this if you wanna see me be an idiot with a hard drive for about thirty seconds.
As you can see, I'm not that smart.
<@&355854283410898955> PUBG anyone?
@swift hatch my halloween fun i guess but with mixed reality
OK, NOTHING I'm trying can open the Xbox 360 hard drive I want to open. EVERYTHING I've tried was either too big or too small.
chainsaw?
No, I would prefer keeping it in good condition.
SHARK! @spice moss
@swift hatch some Microsoft Finland guys get those shark balloons and mod it and put arduino to control it and with signalR people was able to control sharks
I give up. We don't have the right screwdrivers for the Xbox hard drive, anyway.
@runic elbow You know that as soon as you open a hard drive, it's basically dead, right?
I'm not trying to open up the drive itself. Just the case.
Like, so I can put other drives in the case.
Turns out Q-Tips aren't great for painting.
dang, that floppy disk.
OK, added a second coat of paint.
