Yes, servos have a feedback mechanism, so they try to go to specific position. This is called "closed-loop". Steppers are open-loop, in that you can tell them to step but there's no feedback to verify they got there. You can configure stepper motors in a servo configuration. A standard hobby servo is a gear motor with a potentiometer feedback mechanism

for high torque stuff like moving a skeleton hand or something weighty, a stepper is preferred yea?

There are motors of all kinds geared for different uses. You can find things that gear a hobby servo into a beast that can lift 50lb. weights :)

teal river

grand tusk
#

Today I'm driving...the couch. Zzz

teal river
#

Haha, you've never wired up a matrix directly, I've only done it manually

#

I'm doing a 8x2 NeoTrellis build

#

I <3 I2C

grand tusk
#

Max7219

teal river
#

The controller IC might have inbuilt resistors

brazen grove
#

if you use driving chip, it has a constant-current driver built-in, so you don't need resistors

#

the datasheet for the chip should have an example schematic

teal river
#

I should mention I did matrices either direct to the MCU pins or with a shift register

#

Yup, little dot is pin 1

brazen grove
#

the first page has it

#

they use a 7-seg display as the example, but it should be the same

#

so you connect the seg pins to cathodes, and the digit pins to anodes of the matrix

#

note that the matrix has a crazy pinout, all mixed up

#

the wire with a slash is a bus, actually 8 wires

teal river
#

That's confusing

brazen grove
#

the matrix has a text on the side

#

that side is where the pin 1 is

grand tusk
#

If your soldering iron looks like that you don't have any business using it.

brazen grove
#

if you look at the matrix from the top, with the text on the right, then pin one is bottom right

teal river
#

Usually pins wrap around

brazen grove
#

on the right, sorry

#

this is part of my PCB that uses it

grand tusk
brazen grove
#

pin one is marked with "1"

#

the text label goes to the right

teal river
#

"Ergonomic"

brazen grove
#

here you have C for columns and R for rows

#

for this diagram, the text label is on the bottom side

teal river
#

Well, finished half my NeoTrellis board, but didn't realize the time XD I'm off for my walk, good luck!

brazen grove
#

on that diagram pin 1 is probably the upper right corner

#

for the matrix

#

it's all mixed up :(

simple fractal
#

just tuned in

brazen grove
#

that schematic doesn't show you the matrix pins in order in which they are broken out

grand tusk
#

7219 is zero based (Digit 0-7) Matrix is one based (R1-R8).

brazen grove
#

what you need is basically connect R1-R8 to DIG0-DIG7 and then C1-C8 to SEGA-SEGDP

#

here are the R1-R8 connections

left pier
#

nice!

simple fractal
#

looks like my actual wiring.

grand tusk
#

That should be enough to light up one LED (once you wire up the power and signals to the MAX7219.

left pier
#

(we need a breadboard emoji)

#

Chat looks fine

#

or magic smoke ...

#

🤞

grand tusk
brazen grove
#

you have to eject the board properly for the rename to take effect

#

three pins and two for power

#

TX to 1, RX to 13, A1 to 12, GND to 4 and 3.3V to 19

left pier
#

I wish I had a Deshipu with me when I was working...

brazen grove
#

I suppose you can use 5V as well, as there is no signal going from the chip to the mcu board

grand tusk
#

I couldn't live stream circuit construction. Too many bleeps.

brazen grove
#

GND before anything else, otherwise shouldn't matter

#

the data pins are high-z before you write code

#

use scl for clock and mosi for mosi

#

mosi to pin 1 and scl to pin 13

#

sorry, not scl

#

SCK

#

SCK is SPI, SCL is I2C

#

you can also use board.SPI()

grand tusk
#

Bundlefly can't help you now.

brazen grove
#

in the oled display driver?

#

HT16K33

grand tusk
#

Where would the font file go in the repo?

brazen grove
#

it's in the framebuf repo

upper sandal
#

if it's in the package it gets distributed with the package and can be accessed from python

left pier
#

Does your library need to be a package and then you put it in the package folder and the code in __init__.py (Like the change we made to circup recently)???

upper sandal
#

as in a module package, that is a directory

left pier
#

(assuming this library is now a single file)

brazen grove
#

it would still not find it if you install it in lib

#

CS is 12

#

this is weird, there should be only one column

#

and we are missing some rows too

upper sandal
#

ah I was talking for pypi, does the bundler include non py files ?

#

circup would copy the directory, no questions asked, but what about the bundling tools ?

grand tusk
upper sandal
#

also, it's true circuitpython does not have pkg_resources or modules like that, so it could be tricky finding the file actually

brazen grove
#

you want to pull ISET (pin 18) up

#

with a 10k resistor to VCC

#

doesn't matter, anything from 10k to 100k should work

left pier
#

... Insert Borg joke here ...

brazen grove
#

ah, sorry

left pier
#

Very organized !

brazen grove
#

I'm 10k should be fine, it's for the current sense

#

datasheet says 9.53kΩ

upper sandal
#

so I ran circuitpython-build-bundles on the adafruit bundle after adding a jpeg in the magtag package and it was not included in the final result, I did seem to remember it only looks for py files

brazen grove
#

yeah, that resistor is for regulating the current

#

is the matrix up-side-down?

#

that's good

#

you don't want miso

#

the data out DO pin is for chaining

#

when you have multiple chips

grand tusk
#

MAX7219 Pin 1 is Din.

#

Pin 12 is /CS.

#

Pin 13 is CLK.

brazen grove
#

maybe they just used miso as CS

#

I think the communication with the chip is good

#

it does light up

grand tusk
#

Maybe change the while True: loop to fill/unfill the matrix.

brazen grove
#

because they bit-bang it in software

grand tusk
#

Fill/sleep/unfill/sleep

brazen grove
#

do you need to call show()?

grand tusk
#

Looks like a problem with the existing wires to me.

brazen grove
#

you need to call matrix.show()

grand tusk
#

There are four lights!

#

Pull matrix pin 9.

brazen grove
#

you only have 1 column connected, there should only be one column shining, so we definitely have the column pins mixed up

grand tusk
#

So that would be row 1.

brazen grove
#

do you have a datasheet for this particular matrix?

grand tusk
#

Let me rethink...which column was connected?

brazen grove
#

C2

grand tusk
#

...but the third column is flashing. 🤔

brazen grove
#

should be similar enough

#

that the wrong one

#

you are looking at common anode

#

we need to swap rows and columns

#

no, wait, rows are cathodes

#

that should be fine

grand tusk
#

Maybe just connect R1 and C1 and see what happens.

brazen grove
#

maybe we had an off-by-one error

clever summit
#

Hey Foamy!

#

What are we making?

brazen grove
#

max7219 matrix

#

yes, SEG A

grand tusk
#

MAX7219 pin 14

#

Move matrix 13 to 12.

#

Hmm. Tricky. That was C1 to R4 so yeah, no light.

brazen grove
#

do you have a multimeter with a diode mode?

#

yup

#

black to pin 9, red to pin 13

#

disconnect them from the chip first

grand tusk
#

DISconnect

brazen grove
#

disconnect the matrix from the chip

#

then connect the meter black wire to matrix pin 9 and red wire to matrix pin 13

clever summit
#

I do have some of those matrices.

brazen grove
#

weird

teal river
#

I have returned! Still going? :O

brazen grove
#

can you disconnect the matrix from the breadboard and try touching the multimeter wires directly to the pins?

teal river
#

I'm 1 2/3rd hours behind, think I can catch up? XD

brazen grove
#

do you have a regular LED to test this on?

#

black cathode, red anode

#

only if the polarity is correct

teal river
#

I take it you don't have a datasheet for the matrix? I had a weird one with randomly placed pins...

grand tusk
#

change the positive to negative

#

row 5 column 5

teal river
#

Oh, since you got one to light up, you know what column and row it is

#

Or vice versa

clever summit
#

The hardware is easy enough to compare to the datasheet.

teal river
#

It's either row 5 column 1, row 1 column 4, row 8 column 5, or row 4 column 8

clever summit
#

My matrix was 180 degrees off.

#

Upside down means the diodes are the wrong way, and it will not lit up.

teal river
#

Yeah, hard to know if the model numbers are a revision or totally different device...

brazen grove
#

I need to head to bed, good luck!

teal river
#

Bai!

clever summit
#

But using a resistor on the VCC connected to a dupont cable and another one connected to gnd will veriry what pins are connected where.

brazen grove
#

find a corner diode

teal river
#

Woo!

#

Always good to figure out what you know and work from there!

#

Bingo!

clever summit
#

SO EASY right? 🙂

teal river
#

Chonk font, lol

brazen grove
#

so we had it up-side-down

left pier
#

cliff hanger ...

#

Does the Adafruit product page explain the orientation ?

grand tusk
#

The suspense is horrible. I hope it will last.

teal river
#

Oof

grand tusk
#

You may have to map the pins.

teal river
#

Manual mapping weeeee

grand tusk
#

But if it is jumping from row 1 to row 8 that's unsettling.

teal river
#

This seems like the one matrix I had that was like... totally random

grand tusk

You went from (1,8) to (8,4).

"Do you have a vendor you could recommend for the antistatic foam blocks you use for products with pre-soldered male pin headers? We’re on the hunt for one and would be happy to take any advice you all have! - Thanks!"

We got an email request this week from another maker in the community, who is making and selling hardware with pre-soldered pin headers. They were wondering where we get our antistatic foam for our pre-soldered boards. Great question for a Great Search! We'll show you the different kinds of foam and the sizes we recommend.

ionic garnet
#

hey folks, what's the best dev board that runs circuitpython and has wifi and ble? I've seen some that are expensive and wondering which you would all choose? For now use case is a few sensors and a couple of digital and analog pins with some floating point math. Code runs well on rp 2040

distant junco
# teal river Ohhh, I didn't know you could have an RTC control things like that! Glad to see ...

Well, the ESP32-S2 still has to drive the display (send images, text, etc), however, the sharp displays require a 1-60Hz refresh. You can do that with software or hardware. Most of the Adafruit examples use software refreshes. However, a sw refresh means that the ESP32s2 has to wake every second. I use the attached RTC to send the refresh pulse instead - so the ESP32s2 can sleep for longer (in this case, for 60 seconds before it changes the time)

a lot has to do with the internal monitor. Of course you need it if only monitor, but on mult-monitor it cooks. Also Chrome is doing something to it

#

Closing tabs helps despite having 64GB of RAM and the fastest CPU offered

#

intel that is

#

the M1 smokes it for most tasks

teal river
#

I've noticed that even Opera can slow down a system with too many tabs and/or windows open and plenty of extra RAM

I put a quartz rock in an Altoids tin and it totally didn't oscillate unless I shook it

turbid hill
#

I have this company award that looks to be about same size base as the matrix I want to put it under the award and shine lights through the glass award

slow spire
#

@haughty quiver Was 5201 a prototype for the glasses?

haughty quiver
#

that's my suspicion. I think Limor said it was a good way for her to start figuring out that driver before adding the complexities of glasses geometry to it.

ebon stratus
#

@cinder wind how many hertz did you shake it up to? LOL
