Yes, servos have a feedback mechanism, so they try to go to specific position. This is called "closed-loop". Steppers are open-loop, in that you can tell them to step but there's no feedback to verify they got there. You can configure stepper motors in a servo configuration. A standard hobby servo is a gear motor with a potentiometer feedback mechanism

Thanks John for another great Workshop !
thank you jp! great tips 😀
Great show, thanks 🙂
I need to animate some of my dolls
Chucky like?
Anime style
Thanks, John. 😀 And another great workshop. 👍
Good show!
sometimes you need to build a armor
Goku doing kame hame ha? Blue LEDs in the hands? (Yes I spent it wrong)
Thanks!
Thanks JP !!! Great Show !!!
Excellent workshop today, @haughty quiver. Thanks!
thanks very much!
glad the stream behaved itself 🙃
Lol. Most of the ones I've made are one I got the models for on Thingiverse, just cute anime style girls
@haughty quiver you reminded me I need to figure out making a singling Christmas snowman for my son who loves the old “manaminah “ snowmen toys
nice!
for high torque stuff like moving a skeleton hand or something weighty, a stepper is preferred yea?
There are motors of all kinds geared for different uses. You can find things that gear a hobby servo into a beast that can lift 50lb. weights :)
here's a nice writeup on the DID https://vfxblog.com/dinosaurinputdevice/
Wonderful. I still would consider updating some small demo in CP Learn guide to show this!
There is a Feedback link in the left sidebar on all guides. Feel free to point out specific things to fix using that. It's anonymous, so you won't get acknowledgment, but we appreciate it.

Woo-hoo special stream! Hello all happy Friday! 😊
How many pizzas can you make per hour in the manufacturing oven?
lots of forbidden pizzas
🍕
@lilac tusk my home office is ~5x6
ahh, I miss the factory. good to see everyone on the line
i occasionally use the dining room table
I had no idea there was an astronaut hiding underneath the display 👩🚀
i'm still waiting to get a macropad
hoping to make a mini midi pad for my nephew for christmas
uh, i'm not sure. I think he wants to use fruityloops to make music or use it with a keyboard, or maybe a software synth
i'm not 100% sure what i will be able to accomplish
such a polite test program
i sometimes spend more time reworking issues from assembly than actually assembling boards
sometimes solder paste doesn't want to do what i want it too
Thanks for sharing so much about your internal processes, the openness is refreshing and awesome!
it really is
Is Scott doing his Deep Dive today?
No, it will be FoamyGuy
No, Scott's off today.
Thanks @haughty quiver . That was prob in my head somewhere.
Happy Today, everybody!
thanks for the tour! 🙂
TODay, haha!
woah..TODay
good one lol
Aww, I missed the manufacturing thingy... But I get to see a special FoamyGuy stream :D
Where is stream?
perhaps here? https://www.youtube.com/user/Zobrombee
oh yes, i saw that and laughed probably way harder than a normal person would have lol
No stream at the moment
I like halloween but most years i get burnt out on it by mid month so i'm really hoping to make it to halloween this year with all my excitement
Am spoop life
just remember Halloween == Christmas because OCT 31 = DEC 25
for me christmas is a season (more than just a handful of days as some people suggest). and by season i mean like a state of mind, a spirit of giving. whether it be candy on halloween, turkey on thanks giving, or presents on christmas morning
my kids are also old enough to really enjoy halloween so that is also exciting
I think foamyguy said he would go live one hour later than the usual deep dive.
yeah
So we're all here an hour early lol
Now what will we throw in the well?
soup yes
also, interesting idea. i think it would be cool to create sort of a physical MIMO access point with ESP32 or ESP32-S2 in access point configuration
Oh wait I don't like having people watch me eat... oop
have like 2 or 4 ESP32/ESP32-S2 in broadcast mode to make a weak access point lol
mermaids in my ocean?
I'mma make a pizza boarrd
one that uses 100 neopixel to cook a pizza?
use high temp solder and circulating fans to create the first neopixel convection oven
lol
no deep dive today?
Nope, Scott is off
aww
FoamyGuy streaming around 6EST
what time is it now in EST?
we’re 5:35 right now
it occurs to me now that I don't actually know how to ping the deep divers role 😅
Maybe @paper peak can ping everyone
does scott normally do that?
<@&(846780953275006976)> While Scott is out this week I will be streaming for a bit tonight if folks are interested in hanging out still. I will be here in the chat and you can follow along on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_mslil7CAc
I believe he does. it was created originally so that he could let folks know if he was switching to thursday.
Given the time has changed, I think its a legit use of the group.
I will try one more @DeepDivers about to start streaming for a bit tonight. Links to join are a few messages above.
I cannot do the ping
Wicked... can hear those keys pounding 😉
Scott does it sometimes, but usually he @ the group when there's a change he didn't get to tell us about in the previous stream
I'll only be here for a bit, off for my walk soon...
I like that blue cable
Why do you go by FoamyGuy ? Is that a fun story you can share ?
Never heard of that before, I'll have to check it out
Foamy recommended for... not children
Today I'm driving...the couch. Zzz
Haha, you've never wired up a matrix directly, I've only done it manually
I'm doing a 8x2 NeoTrellis build
I <3 I2C
Max7219
The controller IC might have inbuilt resistors
if you use driving chip, it has a constant-current driver built-in, so you don't need resistors
the datasheet for the chip should have an example schematic
I should mention I did matrices either direct to the MCU pins or with a shift register
Yup, little dot is pin 1
the first page has it
they use a 7-seg display as the example, but it should be the same
so you connect the seg pins to cathodes, and the digit pins to anodes of the matrix
note that the matrix has a crazy pinout, all mixed up
the wire with a slash is a bus, actually 8 wires
That's confusing
If your soldering iron looks like that you don't have any business using it.
if you look at the matrix from the top, with the text on the right, then pin one is bottom right
Usually pins wrap around
"Ergonomic"
here you have C for columns and R for rows
for this diagram, the text label is on the bottom side
Well, finished half my NeoTrellis board, but didn't realize the time XD I'm off for my walk, good luck!
on that diagram pin 1 is probably the upper right corner
for the matrix
it's all mixed up :(
just tuned in
that schematic doesn't show you the matrix pins in order in which they are broken out
7219 is zero based (Digit 0-7) Matrix is one based (R1-R8).
what you need is basically connect R1-R8 to DIG0-DIG7 and then C1-C8 to SEGA-SEGDP
here are the R1-R8 connections
nice!
looks like my actual wiring.
That should be enough to light up one LED (once you wire up the power and signals to the MAX7219.
you have to eject the board properly for the rename to take effect
three pins and two for power
TX to 1, RX to 13, A1 to 12, GND to 4 and 3.3V to 19
I wish I had a Deshipu with me when I was working...
I suppose you can use 5V as well, as there is no signal going from the chip to the mcu board
I couldn't live stream circuit construction. Too many bleeps.
GND before anything else, otherwise shouldn't matter
the data pins are high-z before you write code
use scl for clock and mosi for mosi
mosi to pin 1 and scl to pin 13
sorry, not scl
SCK
SCK is SPI, SCL is I2C
you can also use board.SPI()
Bundlefly can't help you now.
Where would the font file go in the repo?
if it's in the package it gets distributed with the package and can be accessed from python
Does your library need to be a package and then you put it in the package folder and the code in __init__.py (Like the change we made to circup recently)???
as in a module package, that is a directory
(assuming this library is now a single file)
it would still not find it if you install it in lib
CS is 12
this is weird, there should be only one column
and we are missing some rows too
ah I was talking for pypi, does the bundler include non py files ?
circup would copy the directory, no questions asked, but what about the bundling tools ?
See https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_framebuf/issues/10 -- closed last year.
also, it's true circuitpython does not have pkg_resources or modules like that, so it could be tricky finding the file actually
you want to pull ISET (pin 18) up
with a 10k resistor to VCC
doesn't matter, anything from 10k to 100k should work
... Insert Borg joke here ...
ah, sorry
Very organized !
so I ran circuitpython-build-bundles on the adafruit bundle after adding a jpeg in the magtag package and it was not included in the final result, I did seem to remember it only looks for py files
yeah, that resistor is for regulating the current
is the matrix up-side-down?
that's good
you don't want miso
the data out DO pin is for chaining
when you have multiple chips
maybe they just used miso as CS
I think the communication with the chip is good
it does light up
Maybe change the while True: loop to fill/unfill the matrix.
because they bit-bang it in software
Fill/sleep/unfill/sleep
do you need to call show()?
Looks like a problem with the existing wires to me.
you need to call matrix.show()
you only have 1 column connected, there should only be one column shining, so we definitely have the column pins mixed up
So that would be row 1.
Let me rethink...which column was connected?
C2
...but the third column is flashing. 🤔
should be similar enough
that the wrong one
you are looking at common anode
we need to swap rows and columns
no, wait, rows are cathodes
that should be fine
Maybe just connect R1 and C1 and see what happens.
maybe we had an off-by-one error
MAX7219 pin 14
Move matrix 13 to 12.
Hmm. Tricky. That was C1 to R4 so yeah, no light.
do you have a multimeter with a diode mode?
yup
black to pin 9, red to pin 13
disconnect them from the chip first
DISconnect
disconnect the matrix from the chip
then connect the meter black wire to matrix pin 9 and red wire to matrix pin 13
I do have some of those matrices.
weird
I have returned! Still going? :O
can you disconnect the matrix from the breadboard and try touching the multimeter wires directly to the pins?
I'm 1 2/3rd hours behind, think I can catch up? XD
do you have a regular LED to test this on?
black cathode, red anode
only if the polarity is correct
I take it you don't have a datasheet for the matrix? I had a weird one with randomly placed pins...
The hardware is easy enough to compare to the datasheet.
It's either row 5 column 1, row 1 column 4, row 8 column 5, or row 4 column 8
My matrix was 180 degrees off.
Upside down means the diodes are the wrong way, and it will not lit up.
Yeah, hard to know if the model numbers are a revision or totally different device...
I need to head to bed, good luck!
Bai!
But using a resistor on the VCC connected to a dupont cable and another one connected to gnd will veriry what pins are connected where.
find a corner diode
SO EASY right? 🙂
Chonk font, lol
so we had it up-side-down
The suspense is horrible. I hope it will last.
Oof
You may have to map the pins.
Manual mapping weeeee
But if it is jumping from row 1 to row 8 that's unsettling.
This seems like the one matrix I had that was like... totally random
You went from (1,8) to (8,4).
Like I suggested 10 minutes ago?
is there a model number as part of the label?
under "Luckylight"
KWM-R30882CWB-Y
?
Oof, my tip of my soldering iron broke off...
If searching the model number on Adafruit does NOT give a result, I would expect you did NOT get it from Adafruit

Someone kick them.
Don't we all. <@&327289013561982976>
good
sounds like that’d be romanized japanese
Bean said "why", I said "wakarimasen" which is Japaense for "I don't understand", but I know, they were speaking Chinese XD
💯
I can't type Japanese characters and only know a few phrases XD
they were typing simplified chinese, I countered with my taiwan traditional chinese
Ahh... So what were they talking about? Did it mean anything? I saw the translation but still didn't understand
yeah, it was exactly what their nick and the google translate said, just that message spammed over and over again
got kicked very fast (props to mods for that too); good riddance, don’t need that in this server lmao
I guess I mean I don't know who or what they were talking about XD
that’s still cool! and of course, never too late to pick it up if you ever want to
Let's stick to discussing the livestream and Foamyguy's project ...
Sadly I have a learning disorder that prevents me from learning languages DX I can only process English
Right, Foamy time!
prolly too political to describe that person here (being that I’m taiwanese I have some bias against em and that’d prolly colour whatever I tried to say about em)

I would assume it follows the pattern from there on
This is definitely feeling like a Deep Dive Foamy !
We've got 1/4 sorted.
Go with a known column and find all the row pins.
You had one light each on 8, 7, and 6.
The pinout picture should have the pins increasing as you go counterclockwise. One side is not.
Red is on 9 now.
use for pin numbers, but not r/c
Not-a-race race: Me completing my NeoTrellis board vs. Foamy doing what he's doing until he decides to stop, lol
I have my top and bottom rows complete, just need to join them and do address jumpers :D
One would hope the pattern continues
But... who knows
🎉
OK, I am being summoned to go for a walk, or else.. 😉 Thank you @smoky island !
I can't listen live tomorrow but looking forward to more on the type hints stuff
Seems like none of the diagrams were right.
It's a foamyguy weekend!

Can you ping me before you go live tomorrow?
yes. according to the internet, that part does not exist.
Oh this was Deep !
did you find that somewhere? or make it real quick?
Nice! thank you. I've saved a copy
I'm told the matrices may have come from this individual: https://ch00ftech.com/ they don't seem to have a section selling anything at this time but I think it was kind of a one-off situation. They do have some project videos tha use similar matricies.
So, was Scott off today?? I couldn't find his stream anywhere....
yes
FoamyGuy did a stream instead
@teal river I'm getting ready to start up the stream in about 10 minutes.
We mapped the pins on the 8x8 matrix last night, now we are ready to have another go at wiring it up to the MAX7219 chip. That's what I'll be working on for the stream today. Hang out here in the chat and follow along on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN44lZq96Zk
Adafruit best toy store
I would live in an Adafruit store, more than I do Micro Center!
Micro Center's Adafruit stock is kinda random, lol
Fresh good
Ahh, was wondering why you didn't have two interlocked breadboards
It looks like you could remove a set of rails from one, although then you'd need to cut the foam on the back...
Is code running without error?
I have that phone :O
I like chonk too! I used to carry it daily as my secondary, but replaced it with an iPhone 8 refurb for daily carry due to security concerns, so now it's just my thermal camera and flashlight
Had to replace the battery because it nearly exploded...
Spicy pillow
puff
I dunno what to do with my spicy pillows
I feel like DP means something...
Spicy pillow currently lives in an electrical tape lined Altoids tin
Fritzing?
Always easier with pratice
Framing hard DX especially with lots of things going on
Huzzah!
Maybe you should write a test to do a pattern so you know you're getting the right order
Yeah this matrix isn't crazy like I thought
Yay!
Testing good
Getting close!
brb
I have returned... that took longer than expected XD
I just caught up with where you welcomed me back, lol
2x wooshing
Confused matrix seems confused
W00t
I'd snag it
NeoTrellis is fun :D Although I realized the Monome project is Arduino and I dunno if I can port it to CP, lol
JP introduced me to the NeoTrellis Monome! Magical music goodness
Yup, blinky board
You should be able to ping the hostname and then you'll have the IP
Hmm
May be different in Linux...
[I'm on Windows, assuming you're on Linux of some flavor]
I need to get an HDMI capture
Regular keyboard? What did you switch to, DVORAK?
Trouble typing on QWERTY after switching to another layout is the exact reason I never really considered... Plus I can type at 80+WPM as it is, so not too concerned about speed
Ohhh, I see... I'm building a split, but it's basically like if you cut a regular keyboard in half
I feel like there's a term for non-ortho that I can't remember
Interesting
staggered layouts?
I feel like there was another term
I gotta go, gonna go pick up a new iPad Mini :O have fun, good luck!
😨
I should scroll back and see how the 8x8 matrix turned out
I've progressed de total git beginner to upper beginner watching scott
Same. First pull request ever was to cpy.
I'm just watching freecodecamp video about git. Always learning
Thanks.
Looks good
Will you do a learn guide :)
I last used an 8x8 with an Arduino. Many years ago

We got an email request this week from another maker in the community, who is making and selling hardware with pre-soldered pin headers. They were wondering where we get our antistatic foam for our pre-soldered boards. Great question for a Great Search! We'll show you the different kinds of foam and the sizes we recommend.

apparently all of twitch's source code and user data was leaked, just FYI. May need to change some passwords
it has not been a good week for people
well twitch source code and csv files not DB was breached
Ah I read a headline that may have been inaccurate.
Source code AND internal tools including security tools were reportedly part of the leak
You should still change your password and enable 2FA if you haven’t done so already
Just because they didn’t leak databases doesn’t mean they don’t have them or access to them
How can I verify if I have a subscription? I've logged into my adafruit account, but it does not state if I have a subscription to Adabox.
I'm uncertain. You have two options - wait until the live stream tonight and ask during it, or email support@adafruit.com and check with them, they'll let you know for sure.
Thanks @clear matrix . You're the best
good evening folks
good evening everybody
Hewwo!
Hey folks!
I has pizza
come on by! https://streamyard.com/ascuq9ij94
Hey y'll
I hate working full time+
Retirement is where it's at. 🙂
Indeed
Oof, Ask an Engineer got suggested before Show and Tell on YouTube, almost asked why S&T was starting at 8
Good evening everyone.
hello!
YT did a blink!
Now a JP!
Hmm, audio sounds crunchy, kinda like phone compression
Yay robospiders!
I love them so much!
super cute yet intimidating smol bots @north harness
I shall make a giant version
Those look real cool. Robots are awesome
Hi all!
@north harness do you have links yet for your spider pals?
@teal river Not yet, I will release them soon 🙂
i like @low fractal 's better 😺
Can't wait!
We need an emoji for those sweet shades 😎
can the matrix do other effects besides scroll text?
Scott!
Fancy purple!
Ohh pretty board
I believe all the LEDs are addressable so you could do more
sweet board @rapid hornet
I spy Scotts bird logo 🐦
stacking headers are painful to solder
I've done that too "why do I smell plastic burning"
@rapid hornet very nice! The STEMMA QT and SWD are the only things that aren't super common, right?
thanks!
Favorite Liz, yes!
Definitely favorite Liz!
@split gazelle I love data collection :D
me too 😺
That looks real ... sharp!
Love it Darian! I want one!
Neato!
That looks neat Darian!
I never loved the E-ink refresh either
Great looking hinge on that display @distant junco
Also glad to see I'm not the only one to leave the screen protector on XD
Criminal 😉
looks great Darian!
looks neat!
very light weight
Awesome gadget Darian
I bet the power consumption isn't too far off from the MagTag if it's similar processing and all, those SHARP memory displays are amazing
Cool!
That's a weird way to spell "safe" :P
noooo!
todbot!
That's cool!
Was that screen in the last demo the eink display?
It's a SHARP memory display
The Adafruit 2.7" 400x240 SHARP Memory Display Breakout is a chonky cross between an eInk (e-paper) display and an LCD. It has the ultra-low power usage of eInk and the ...
Can I have the JP head image?
Here's a JP head from when he turned into a NeoKey monster
JP head pillow now available on Adafruit
Hey all - thanks for all the love for the "Newt" - that's the name if the smart, always on, low power display that I just showed. "Newt" because you can stick it on a wall, and a homage to the Apple Newton
need. today.
it's the lilygo TTGO T8 v1.1 or something, the name is 1km long
Christmas adabox is just a JP Head Pillow
Beautiful start!
Here's the crowd supply link if you want more info: https://www.crowdsupply.com/phambili/newt (that link has links to the github and the hackaday.io site where I'm tracking the build)
Beautiful project @distant junco
Awesome!
I love this entire paragraph, and can't wait to have one on my wall!
Power consumption is really good - I specifically picked parts that could operate at low power. The RTC operates at 45 nA(!!!) and it also controls the hardware refresh of the Sharp display - so the ESP32s2 can sleep ad not worry about waking up to refresh the screen
Thanks... was a little (ok a lot) nervous sharing it
You did great, and that board is real cool too. Glad you shared
Keeping the screen protector on is a must!
Ohhh, I didn't know you could have an RTC control things like that! Glad to see the MagTag idea being taken in other directions. I had actually thought about doing something like this, hehe
I’m designing a little IoT board with an EDP display, and it’s super cool to see how other people design their IoT products 🙂
I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine but who knows
super cool
Oh wow, @proven crow that's AMAZING!
Right now I’m just getting comfortable designing boards with displays which is really fun.
I'm hoping to make them available for purchase soon (working with crown supply)... But you can always build your own (the board files are on github) and I built my prototype with adafruit parts
Oh nice @proven crow
I'll definitely take a look at the BOM and see about building one!
hey folks, what's the best dev board that runs circuitpython and has wifi and ble? I've seen some that are expensive and wondering which you would all choose? For now use case is a few sensors and a couple of digital and analog pins with some floating point math. Code runs well on rp 2040
Well, the ESP32-S2 still has to drive the display (send images, text, etc), however, the sharp displays require a 1-60Hz refresh. You can do that with software or hardware. Most of the Adafruit examples use software refreshes. However, a sw refresh means that the ESP32s2 has to wake every second. I use the attached RTC to send the refresh pulse instead - so the ESP32s2 can sleep for longer (in this case, for 60 seconds before it changes the time)
off topic^^^
I love that BlackBerry keyboard adapter
Yeah, pretty cool! I might have to try it
we don't have a good option for a mcu that does both ble and wifi
If you’re using rp2040, probably the nano rp2040 connect from Arduino
(esp32-s3 will be a good option when it's available)
yeah have that on order
nrf52840 is good for ble. esp32-s2 for wifi
Ahh, gotcha... Guessing you just run it at 1Hz when idle? I hadn't realized those displays had variable refresh rate!
the arduino. and looking at esp32 stuff. Thanks
Howdy all 👽 Chicago here. LOL
the arduino i think i have on order. sometimes I order random hardware late at night!
Thanks!
it's fun when it arrives and I don't remember ordering it
Thanks Liz... LOVE your projects, by the way
thanks!
Yo
I'm curious, where do you source your keyboards?
my latenight electronics habit is certainly cheaper than my crypto buying sprees!
Thanks JP!
great projects everyone!
Great projects everyone. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks JP!
bye @haughty quiver
and great job hosting @haughty quiver !
Good show! Thanks JP! Great job everyone!
Great job everyone
Thanks all. Inspiring projects as always
really cool to see all the youngins
Great job beeping and booping @haughty quiver
super cool stuff all!
that gives me hope
what not me I am aged and old
the HINGE!!! I didn't think anyone would know! Yeah, I designed the Newt to stick to a wall, but I wanted to put it on a desk/shelf as well, and I wanted something easy to make (scale)... so laser-cutting a stand, with a living hinge, was a no brainer (once I figured out how to do it)

I think of Adafruit when I hear those beeps
@haughty quiver thanks for being a great host and keeping me on track (I was SO nervous, and can talk about this for hours if not regulated - as my wife can attest)
I think about Adafruit a lot during the day
I love the shirt Ladyada is wearing
Especially with all the Adafruit things across my desk XD
me too
Same
JP audio peaking loud
I refuse to believe it's already Wednesday
Crackly
His mic is being over driven again
Phil audio topped out and crackled
I got mine here on ebay, select just the keyboard option, not T-Watch Keyboard unless if you wanted the entire thing. https://tinyurl.com/cwpjfszd

Need board advice: Want to build emote device that simply snd/rcv an on/off msg (not power on/off). Bluetooth or wifi to a central hub. What board would be cheepest for "clicer"? I/R not useable. May not have line of sight. P.S. if you can't tell, I'm a noob.
Time is a relative to gravity and light
think sound is fixed now
The quality for the one from Solder Party is better, but they aren’t ever in stock anymore.

@open girder yup
Freeeeebies
I am collecting those white proto boards as a indicator of how many times I buy from adafruit
i know you ran out. I had to buy from amazon cuz I needed a CPE
what the...
I'm going to cover a wall with them
Lol
I’ve never been able to order enough from amazon to get a freebie lol
I have no problem spending $100+ on Digi-Key though
I saw a report that factories had to reduce energy consumption [generally shutting down for lengths of time] because they hit certain energy limits related to emissions
Usually buying parts for boards lol
I have bought a ton in last couple weeks all for my electronics binge for my Dec holidays, got the whole month off
I love that even to Canada Digikey is $100 for free shipping and customs handled
i tend to buy from Adafruit more than digikey or other because I like them! The black boxes make me happy
I really like free shipping
should be renamed happy boxes
i just use mail from NYC as long as no lipo
yes! Happy boxes
In canada I get most shipments from adafruit via DHL
good point. I buy a lot from Sweetwater too
I do try to order direct from Adafruit whenever I can (and really from any maker direct if I can)

those even have candy in the box
Adafruit is the candy of electronics
yesindeedo
soo many electronic calories
I bought one of the rulers!
I usually have to buy bigger quantities than is feasible to get from Adafruit 😅
I figured @lilac tusk
I bought one the week before DX after thinking about buying one for months
lol my last purchase I decided to buy that ruler for some of my co workers and got the wrong rulers and had to order again this week to get that ruler
i buy from Adafruit also to support their wonderful work to educate the world and spread the electronics love
Though I’m wrapping up my business to focus on grad school so Adafruit will probably get more business from me soon
Lol, did you get the regular PCB ruler?
sigh yes
I did update the ruler I have to circuitpython 7
after 35 years you'd think i like c++
but python is so simple
sometimes simplicity wins
I got both XD but thankfully I did it on purpose
I remember in 1980's getting Borland C 1.0 and self learning C
Who remembers TurboPascal?!
i love the regular ruler so much it gets weekly use. the other one i have for novelty
I went the Turbo C route
I worked on Turbo Pascal!
Worked on as in developing? :O
Raspberry Pi: the FASTEST microcontroller?!
I was one of 3 employees of TurboPower Software in Scotts Valley. We ghost wrote for many compilers and sold class libraries. Worked with Anders on TP
especially tp 5.5 with objects
wrote the class libs
Someone over locked the rp2040 to 400MHz lol
Ohhh, that's so cool!
won Jolt Award for much of my work in those days
lol
I loved Turbo Pascal in ye olde days
so sad they faded out sight, I always really liked their IDE
i was just a hotshot kid playing in the big leagues
this was 1980s
i was in my 20s and wrote system level, assembly, and development tools
Turbo Pascal changed the world
Used that calculator and quadrule paper for a lot of programs
I worked on many dev tools but it is the most amazing one
One of the big things I missed from the office last year was decorating my cube and area for halloween
Borland made compilers low priced and with reach of hobbyst
And by me, I mean mostly my friend at work who didn't have a desk so adopted mine to decordate
i learned to program on a calc like that in 1970s
Computing history is fascinating
I learned to program initially in Visual Basic and then really got deep into making IRC chat bots
12 and 36 bit 🤔
what about ibm basic or gbasic
How can I verify if I have a subscription? I've logged into my adafruit account, but it does not state if I have a subscription to Adabox.
and FAST. I had a program in UCSD Pascal that took 12 hours to compile and link on CP/M. TP 2.0 compiled and linked it in like 9 seconds
gwbasic
lol
🦑
My mom told me yesterday that she did programming on an old Apple II computer
Next AdaBox is gonna be cookies and scarves
I started on apple 2

Gotta keep with the spooky theme 😉
I'm more concerned about perishable things that have gotten stuck in shipping that are going to be absolute losses... at least Adafruit stuff will show up and work when it gets here regardless of the time!
i can tell you guys many Turbo Pascal stories. Look me up. Lots of my code is on the public domain. I spoke at conferences and wrote for mags. It was a great time. Just the beginning of the most wild ride that led me to Jibo
I was thinking about all the food that comes over on container ships
Fun fact: the flexible eInk (2.9" at least) is compatible with the MagTag :0
please just thinking of it I can smell it
Nice jar label
I'm sure they've attempted to get that stuff unloaded first, but with all the insanity... yeah
Mild Magtag Pickles
forehead screens are the future
Companies like Walmart and Costco are chartering boats to get stuff off boats faster
Or some I’ve heard
ooo Collin's upped his motion graphics chops. looks awesome!
I programmed on an Apple IIe too, but had a Commodore 64 before that. My Apple addiction continues to this day
I got to work with them too! In a roundabout way.
I still have my Apple 2c and it works perfectly
C64 is what I grew up on and learned so much from
watch Adrians Basement for C64 stuff
I bought it myself with money from working as a dishwasher
late teens I think/early 20s
TRS-80 Mod 1 then a Ti 99 4/a
teens
👋
"shell-shocked" is a good description of the feeling
we're all sharing our geek creds
I bought the blues swan, 2 of them and the programmer
I freaked when I saw my tweet
DEC PDP8/E, Imsai S100, Some mainframe (FORTRAN), …

oh I did PDP stuff too around that time
Raspberry Pi also just announced Raspberrypi.com
in machine language!
what did PT say a few minutes ago? I was distracted. About sending him a tweet or email?
Yes. We old
did assembly on the apple
Once I got an assembler (and figured out what it was) I did some on the C64 but never of any complexity
About the blog job they're offering
is there a name for a snake hydra?
I knew a guy in high school who got a apple without the basic roms and all he had was assembly so he got real good at it
In high school, got the TRS 80 speech to read Spanish text aloud, with a bad American accent (available phonemes)
^^^ cool
Clipping
Impressive!
that C64 launched my career
we had one also but no one used it, everyone wanted to use the commodore pets
Kind of
I sold a program for $10 to a professor
So, something useful!
I want FPGA dev board!
What kind of program?
We need a WipperSnapper emoji
math. It did some blade pull analysis that I wrote for my dad. He was a jet engine designer at Pratt and Whitney aircraft. It showed how to use some Calculus and other advanced math stuff
he liked it and wanted to use the source
So I made up a price on the spot
(BTW, watching via Twitch on iPhone, so I can use Discord at the same time (picture in picture)
)
cool. I have two 32" UHD monitors
on MBP and M1 Macbook Air
Currently on my 55" 4K TV that I mostly use as a monitor for work, lol
ICYMI - Need board advice: 😲 Building multiple clicker devices to snd/rcv on/off state msg via Blu or wifi to a hub. What board for clicker? I/R not poss cuz no line of sight. Need cost effective. Thanks. - signed, the noob
I like the different
Or which forunm would I best ask that type of question?
Semi-napping, so 32” monitors not yet pillow friendly
This is an upgrade from 2 1080p 27", lol... it's kinda like going to 4
not pillow friendly
So cool
if I were laying in bed I'd have the stream on my iPad Pro or Mini and Discord on one of my phones, lol
both in my CPUs and on my monitor!
I have an old iPad Air 2 that still works but slow
I like this walking tour, but a slow version looking closer at things would be super duper cool
@open girder I want a walkthrough of every aisle, so I can sorta pretend to rummage shelves
Yeah, like this!
Besides all the technical knowledge of Adafruit the logistics handling always amazes me
@ionic garnet rumor that M1X MBPs being announced in next couple weeks
the tardis is tardy
Cool tour.
I have a 21" Trinitron monitor with BNC connectors from my old miniVax. Set that on your tummie laying in bed. LOL
if you've got a Tardis, put all the storage in there. get a lotta space back
yeah i have heard that for some time! But I hope so. This 2019 MBP intel i9 gets so hot
The M1 Macbooks are so good
the MBA M1 doesn't have a fan, break a sweat, or run slowly. It's lightnight fas
this show is runnin off a m1 macbook
Sweet
looks at 2018 MacBook Pro that's trying to catch fire
My Gold MacBook Air is my favorite toy
Yours too?
Mine heats the room!
Mine randomly finds GB of data
Mhmm... toasty while idling with nothing open, fans go brrrrr
I have found tricks to keeping it cooler though
Mine is actually still running quite well.
Mine doesn't get THAT hot, but my Threadripper and other systems do XD
The only hiccups in performance I've had were from too much RAM usage, and occasionally Netflix hiccups
looks like macropads will be soon back in stock
Disney Adafruit Museum!
a lot has to do with the internal monitor. Of course you need it if only monitor, but on mult-monitor it cooks. Also Chrome is doing something to it
Closing tabs helps despite having 64GB of RAM and the fastest CPU offered
intel that is
the M1 smokes it for most tasks
I've noticed that even Opera can slow down a system with too many tabs and/or windows open and plenty of extra RAM
Sweeeeet 🌈
love that like led matrix
That is a beautiful board
yeah I picked 2 up
nice
@dim knot Product#?
I can't order this week, hoping they'll be around next week
@slow spire https://www.adafruit.com/product/5201
Add a splash of RGB LEDs to a project you're working on, with this adorable 13x9 RGB LED matrix breakout. It features -- no surprise -- 117 RGB LEDs, each one 2x2mm in size, in a 13x9 ...
our hero with the PID
It's the coolest board with the most difficult to remember name.
I just did a search for "matrix" and by "recently added" and it was close to the top :D
this is where my wishlist grows
Thanks, @haughty quiver ! And it’s… it’s … in stock! Ordering.
crosses finger for next week
@slow spire it's really snazzy! I've been working on a little demo controlling it with the iPod click wheel
I reeeaaallly want one of those iPod click wheels
I put a quartz rock in an Altoids tin and it totally didn't oscillate unless I shook it
Same
I have this company award that looks to be about same size base as the matrix I want to put it under the award and shine lights through the glass award
@haughty quiver Was 5201 a prototype for the glasses?
that's my suspicion. I think Limor said it was a good way for her to start figuring out that driver before adding the complexities of glasses geometry to it.
@cinder wind how many hertz did you shake it up to? LOL
Yep
this was probably my problem
runny low on those rgb matrix boards in case you want to order
The adalogger is one board I have not bought yet since not sure what to do with it.
just grabbed two
You could use it for grabbing temperature data in your house to see how it shifts and how efficient your heating/cooling actually is
Oh I did my first smd soldering, I put the 2mb flash in the qt-py controller
i haven't bought one yet either
congrats @turbid hill that rocks!
I do relize I need to put a pointy tip in the pencil and switch to finer solder
Lol spells
You could probably make a robot to solder for you!
they say the salam witch's were stoned on a fungus spore in the barley they grew
I worked on every part of Jibo but never soldered a thing. Even when there were only 3 engineers
cool
me too
I think those plastic pages are called "card sleeve pages"
or some other MA product
