hi all
Hey evening all

Pico Pack ~~ TM~~ - open source
QFNs were the hardest thing ive tried to solder by far (so far)
Head shoe

@open girder - update your banner to American Background ๐ ๐บ๐ธ
Tomorrow - I guess
@sudden slate yerp, updatin it soon
OK
I don't like Javascript
ooof...yeah. QFNs are tough by hand. My oven wasn't any better tbh
much
Really?
@rapid hornet That's cool
Yeah, lots of bridges connections that I had to rework anyway. Using a stencil and paste helped though
Yeah.
the stencil and paste is how i finally got it too
null null null null null null null null - line 19
is there a way to macro the CTRL+S? 750ms wait is a good idea too
this week I will be at least
I saw a video where someone did it by putting solder down onto the pads at about an even layer and then hot air'd it
i was on holiday last week friday
๐ฆ
๐ฆ ๐พ
I finally got one of those cute little tiny hot plates too. That works so well

I'm making a laptop with a 3D printable case
Yes! I love this mega sized
! Great work Noe, Pedro, and Liz
ya, I assume we can do that too
I don't have Nitro ๐ฆ
lol
I got it free for 3months from Epic Games Store

@sudden slate as all the summer sale things it seems
I'm excited about the CircuitPython camera support, have a few iot-camera-projects I've wanted to do.
agreed @gaunt plume

they are giving 2 free games what change in some rate
Hmm. OK
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
super cool @gaunt plume !
Very nice, I'm playing with a funhouse and WS and it's soooo coool.
Waiting for the pyportal uf2 to migrate that one as well

very nice @split gazelle
@haughty quiver I need that for my WoW oh-crap buttons ๐
cool as before this i watched the jetson webinar what they had with some students of robosub
great idea with the nunchuk @haughty quiver
I was expecting the fw to be on the esp32s2 page.... I just noticed it on the samd51+airlift one, will update tonight.
great project from JohnPark
@haughty quiver Very Cool project
thanks!
great projects everybody!

Where is the best place to purchase adafruit products in the Uk
Probably Pimoroni?
Great thanks Iโll look them up
also canada day almost
Those yummy pudding caps
Question for later re longer range IR remote sending.. I have no problem using the libraries to read and send remote codes, but I canโt seem to get the range of a basic factory tv remoteโฆ I have a project that needs to blanket two bookcases with on and off signals for battery operated candlesโฆ the remote he candles ship with uses a CR2032 battery and works clear across the living room.. Iโve bought pack after pack of IR emitters with no luck. (On Adafruit Metro)
this jam is reminding me ever so slightly of the twin peaks opening credits theme
@haughty quiver I love the Parsec theme but I think itโs clipping so itโs very very loud.
Thanks @quick veldt I'll look into that.

no more free masks. but maybe we should be sending people ice packs.
+1 for free ice packs
I have been implementing Circuitpython in my test stands. The ability for future parsko's being able to just plug in a usb cable and edit code was just too hard to resist!
Ice caves, please
They made me guilt subscribe to Adabox after Iโve spent so much on Adafruit this month. Lol.
I'd like to thank Adafruit for making products that can withstand my terrible soldering skills and still work afterward
Itโs only a few times a year, and you get more than the cost in materials in the box.. plus the packaging is really cool! ๐
The lin-modems days are comming back ๐ฆ
I am just kind of worried it includes something I already own. However, the way theyโve talked on this stream, it seems thatโs not the case.
Do they ever put anything in store before itโs out in Adabox?
That's share holders in open-hardware for you ๐ฆ
great project @smoky island
Love that pokeball!
Question for the Q&A: what factors do you consider when trying to plan how many of a product to release? How did you do this in the younger days of Adafruit?
Q&A: โAre there good sources to find updated lists of SOCs by features? For example, what's out there that's well-supported via Arduino to something comparable to Espressif's ESP chips with Wifi+BT?
That's a sweet book.

I was just reading some Sparkfun beef earlier today. It was from 2017. But yeah. ;)
Lars wasn't sure how to use them.
Lars with those on feet
feet
they are kind of goggle-esque
Oh. They're feet.
Theyโd also sell a lot more if they had better guides and got on the python train. ๐ ๐ถ

Will WipperSnapper going to be closed source?
pretty excited about getting a reel of RP2040. hopefully i'll have it sometime next week
pretty sure all the things are open for the user side
i need to do more RP2040 designs to try out
Is there a way to run a "local" adafruit.io? (asking for the park ranges in Isla del Coco)
(no internet there)
no local ver for io
"wireless"
A lot of io is MQTT based so if you ran that and the underlying MQTT code will still let you do a lot. But you have to run the server
Q: How does LadyAda come up with fresh board ideas? How are Adabox ideas pitched? And how do these ideas transfer to manufacturing? For example, MagTag, FunHouse, MacroPad.
imagine going through airport security with those LEDs sewn into your clothes
The problem is that the "board" libraries for circuitpython use adafruit.io by default, so if I go with a stock MQTT, I loose all of those libraries and the peripheral managment.
the peripherals part of libraries like magtag can be used independently of the rest of the library I believe
Local dns and redirect io.Adafruit.com to a local server?
You can I think call the underlying MQTT so you don't lose it all. I did something similar on my weather display (I think I'd have to look!)
but yeah good support for generic mqtt in portalbase would be nice
๐
Try going through with a bag full of them
7 segments with stacks of jumper wires raise eyebrows
Thanks for the answers, and thanks a lot for the show, very cool as always.
thanks for being an inspiration to small maker companies and being open about the process
Itโs hot
Thanks all!
have a great evening
Thanks @open girder and good night. ๐ Happy Asteroid Day.
Thank you! Stay cool!
see you next month! ๐
By the way shoutout to customer support team.
lol
They took care of me in 30 minutes.
Remember, reforest locally to get the temperature way down. Just a couple of 3y old trees can get the temp down about 5C.
thanks for a great evening of shows!
See ya all next week.
Spaceman Park
See everyone next week
I'm a big fan of urban green space
It is hot
especially rooftop forests
Major Tom Park
I have two coffee plants that i grow on my patio
no coffee beans yet but maybe later this year or next ๐
John Park will definitely dress as an astronaut
An "extinct" orchid appeared on a rooftop in UK just recently. Roof tops are absolutely great for keeping it green.
Probably already has the suit
Cosmic Adabox
i did see something about that. pretty wild
And btw, an excellent way to reforest without doing much... is just put a bat house. They will help a lot with insect control, and they are also amazing at seed dispersing.

Play this on loop
Some local CR scientist just published a scientific paper about it, and I think they are even more efficient than drone reforestation.
I have plans next year to purchase some columnar apple trees
Thatโs really cool
pretty excited about that
growing fruit on your urban outdoor space, providing a great benefit to the birds and bees
In the next month I'll be moving to a new place, and what I would like to do, is to graft trees to have multiple fruit.
(it's to hot for apples here...)
we keep flowers on the patio too
Iโd like to know more about the birds and the bees
water conscious fruit?
avocado are great, but unless they are wild grown... they are water hogs
Sure, they are both in danger of becoming extinct :รพ
Lots of things are in danger of going extinct
it can take as much as a bathtub of water to grow a single avocado at commercial scale
Now that makes me not like guac
I will plant (somewhere) a bunch of "maya nut" trees. They are very good in times of climate change as the maya well knew, and it can be used as corn subtitute, as coffee substitute, they create oxalates in the wood, have super deep roots to they actually fetch water during droughts.
almonds and pistachios are also bad to grow in areas that don't have the rainfall to support them
Remember eating insects is great for the environment
Most of the varieties people keep in their yard, are actually wild-ish and require no watering at all. Last week I got a huuuuuge avocado.
This is avocado (with cocodrile dundee accent)
https://twitter.com/fede2_cr/status/1407799251372068864
the problem with the US is we are farming massive crops in areas that were not really able to support them
Yes, I do that as well, my orchata with cricket flower is just completely delicious.
ohhh that's a florida avocado?
hass cultivar don't get that big as far as I am aware
hass are the typical super market cultivar
Noup, Costa Rica local, picked by me from a neighbor's tree that has so many that the branches break by the weight of the fruit.
It's a "wild-ish" variety. Mostly Pinkerton and Zutano.
so more native guatemalan
This variety doesn't "travel" well, so it's not commercial material.
that's why the hass is the typical super market variety. it travels really well
i grew some hass avocado seeds at one point. had a pretty good sized tree
Well centralamerican to be honest. The country divisions are so "new" that it doesn't really makes sense to use them in plant evolution terms.
it's classified as a guatemalan variety in horticulture, at least what i'm seeing from Purdue.edu
That's why I mentioned that is mostly those varieties, but it's actually more of a wild tree with a little bit of those cultivars because they where used in the zone and got naturally pollinated.
But, aren't we missing the important question? How does that big sucker TASTE? lol
Amazing, I'm not an avid avocado eater, but I've enjoyed two of those for the last 15 days, in salad, and in the chocolate dessert from alton brown, and it's just great.
Kind of a bummer it doesn't travel well, got a big family get together this weekend and couple of those would make an epic guacamole!
jaja, for sure.
As soon as I get vaccinated, all are welcome to visit, I'll supply the avocados ๐
Iโd love to take my wife to CR
It's only a recent crop in the US, but for the rest of latinamerica, it has been a staple dish/fruit since the Olmec times and probably before than that.
Ooooh, sounds tempting, haven't traveled much the last few years. Sadly not in the cards, but makes a nice dream. Everyone have a great week, see you next time!
They are delicious thatโs for sure and a great staple
@gusty wedge the avocados require a lot of water ....yes?
Maybe a commercial crop, but not this wild ones. They are old trees in somebody's backyard and haven't been watered since they where little plantules.
They are in their natural habitat since the days of the late pleistocene when giant sloths used to eat them. (and then we ate all of the sloths ๐ฆ )
Greetings all.
hello!
Ahoy!
Ahoy ahoy
hello
โ
Good afternoon.
Le Bleepage, et le Bloopage.
Good afternoon
Bleep bloop!

Lol.
we can lip read ๐ hiya!
mic levels are good (now) -- peaking at -6dB
I wish I had a macro pad
cool
Send the letters later...
good afternoon folks
Hi Liz!
@split gazelle ๐
hello!
:D
hi!
Thank goodness the heat in the northeast has let up!
๐
Hello YouTubers
I'm a YouTuber :O
Question: What's the meaning of life, the universe and everything?
USB-tooth JP is kinda scary, ngl
buck teef ๐
I have that magnetometer and I dunno what to use it for XD
I bought 3 Trinkey QT 2040 but missed live stream so paid full price along with $100 other Adafruit goodness
Muns! I missed the PotW this week DX
I bought many of them that were left
I might buy one eventually, but I have too many toys I haven't used yet, lol
JP, yes, those LEDs are single color, no chips
I think it was something picked up from Naomi Wu?
@ionic garnet From where?
If you could find a tiny microcontroller with low power consumption, and have a sufficiently sized coil and cap without getting too big, then sure, you could probably make a wireless NeoPixel
I wanna know if we can send you letters/packages!
Adafruit. I only bought 3 but not many were left
seven dan at finding cool things
I feel like I wasn't the one you meant to ping :P
@woeful pond that response was for you: Adafriot, bought 3, but few were left
@teal river I too have too many toys. But I keep thinking the more I hoard the more motivated I will be. Plus, if we have a new wave that causes lockdown, what if instead of toilet paper people panic buy mcu devices? I'm ready for that
@ionic garnet Oh, I thought you meant the induction leds
nope. Didn't buy any of those
and it's possible to preset the encoder.position value python encoder.position = 12
rotary encoders on Arduino was a process for me.
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks!
I would just order everything I see if I had unlimited muns XD
Hai Bruce!
What about one encoder but you want to switch between modding two variables?
Could have it so by default it's modding variable A, press the button and it mods variable B
do you have an encoder example for a short menu? (switching and selecting menu)
I hear JP is working on rotary encoders -- is it spinning him in circles?
He's spinning them in circles!
@teal river one of the cool startups that I was Chief Architect or CTO was acquired resulting in an unexpected balance in the bank sending me on a geek and musician spending spree. Company was Affectiva, a Boston based company.
Hehe, always nice to get extra muns to buy new toys... Sadly I'm 100% self funded at this point. Don't have enough Patreon support XD
but Jibo robot, which I was one of 7 inventors of, went under and all I got was a tax burden for exercising options earlier!!!
right round, baby
so you win a few, but mostly lose in the startup game. But I'll still play the game everytime.
And this is the part where JP loses his mind
I have a few real ones, the dev boards, and the rubber one. We also did some cool USB flash fdrives
if it's a metal knob, you can do my capsense hack
Use a hammer. ๐
Peter, Paul, and Mary have some words about using hammers.
Lol.
put infinity indicator!
JP, can we send you mail?!
plus some of the rotary encoder purchased before does not have the 10K resistor on it which causes problems
Love Peter Paul and Mary. My parents had some really cool albums
I think JP is avoiding my mail question D:
I used a Rotary Trinkey! And yep, ran a small wire from the shaft to the capsense input
MarcosPad?
lol
also great for party parrots
Make a "lights out" game.
@split gazelle What isn't great for party parrots? ๐
this is so, so true
MacroBlind
Too late.
i had the idea to try and run party parrots last summer and it's still written on my white board, only i wrote it as "animated bird gif- maybe affect the speed?" lolol
XD
That sounds so generic
I might use one of these for work to type in certain things I need a lot, like my department's phone number and my email
yeah the layout for this is super cool
I want to use this as a CyberDeck type thing in a movie
I can imagine using the dial to jog in a video editor
Noun 17 verb 11 ... Apollo Guidance Computer
Yay Kattni!
For CyberDeck use, it's even got a speaker, so every key you type, it can play a WAV saying "I'M IN"
Off topic of macro pad, but what bench 30V, 5A max power supply is best for us makers with fairly lightweight power demands?
lol
I hope AdaBox019 has one of these if it's not actually a space theme :O
Macropad lets you do everything Daft Punk style
that's super cool that you can set it up as a list
The encoder could be used to set different profiles for different programs/uses
And since the encoder has a button, you could use the encoder button to toggle if you're using it in the mode, or for mode select
Does the key repeat use the same delay/frequency of the OS settings?
Like, same as pressing on the regular keyboard?
Cool cool. I figured this would look exactly like a regular keyboard
TO THE BENCH!
Zoom, enhance!
Who will port dance dance revolution?
lol
I like blue/white switches
JP is gonna go blind with all those directly exposed NeoPixels!
RIP mic :P
Lol
nice graphic!
I think this macropad has more processing power than the Apollo mission computer that the one graphic is based on...
@teal river Yes, the ordinary calculator did/does also.
It's crazy how little it takes to get to the moon, but how much we have to literally play with!
School of Cosplay? :O
I didn't know that was a thing!
Cool enough for school.
You can never be too cool for cosplay school
True, that.
@haughty quiver where do you order the board for your 'pico keyboard'? I did not see it on Oshpark
JP! Can we send you letters and/or packages?!
Thanks for another great workshop, @haughty quiver ๐
Thanks @haughty quiver. Looking forward to getting my Macropad.
Excellent workshop today, @haughty quiver !
the macropad silkscreen is so silky cool
TY for a fun show.
When you spent all your money on NeoKey 1x4 and can't afford the actual macropad
I can send beer XD
@teal river lol
Can we send clothes for Lars?
Lars could need smartclothes right
Lars just asked if he can make clothes out of us. Which is creepy, but in line with Lars.
deconstructed
I shall send Lars a hood that entirely covers him and makes him invisible
If JP gets a PO box, should I send him a doll?
Where is Lars today?
In our hearts.
Doctor or clothes
Lars is back there, playing with that saw
for lars
Thank you Great Info!
Bai JP!
Thanks @haughty quiver for another excellent workshop stream!
great stream! have a good one
thanks so much all!
Bye all. ๐
Now I have to go out in the rain to install some cameras
Also there's lightning
Fingers crossed I don't get hit again DX
... again?!
@teal river statistically you're okay. I wouldn't sweat it ๐ ๐ฉ๏ธ
I'm a statistical anomaly XD
You are also installing cameras in the rain? I guess we're anomalies together!
I was going to, but the rain kept me inside
Also the massive headache from the storm
shakes fist in general direction of sky
โ๏ธ
Will Scott be on tomorrow evening?
I believe so
Great show team, have a great 4th of July!! (From NZ)
I like the "BAM! This is the board you want!" energy of this picture.
Nice
Who is that? Did she make it? XD
I don't know who that is, the picture is from an article on the early history of the Arduino (which is why the board says "WIRING" on it instead of "Arduino")
lol
I went back and found the article for the curious: https://arduinohistory.github.io
notes doc for today is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A-mQrILrETDJyPWj2CvIFfW2yOt7J_BSKMudwXQUHAc/edit?usp=sharing
Deep Dive w/Scott Hi all, this doc is try and track topics and timecodes for my deep dive stream. These notes will end up in the YouTube videoโs description. Any help keeping them groomed as I stream is welcome. Housekeeping Iโm sponsored by Adafruit to work on CircuitPython. Support them, and...
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks!
I looked around "learning" and could not find it. Could you please point me to it?
Hi all
o/
yes it is wonderful. greetings to all.
I'm gonna miss this week again, I have to get a shower and drive DX
I hope, not at the same time.
well its rather nice outside right now. sunny and not super hot. slight breeze. just too many people (Canada Day weekend)
Good afternoon
Well Dyno not super fast
Hi Scott.
now i wonder how to stop dyno.
Yay, I'm back ๐ Had to take care of a last minute work thing.
I got in an Adafruit order a few days ago. Mostly stuff i saw on the last stream. So more sales for Scott ๐
Don't know what's cooler, the web-BT, or the product focus from that camera ๐
watching my email for Macropad to come back into stock. ๐
deepdivers joining ๐
Having reinstalled discord now i have to turn off most notifications again
macropad pcb look good also
I got my Macropad this week. Decided to have multiple keymaps controlled by pressing and turning the rotary encoder. Solved the Command vs Control for Mac vs PC problem.
@rapid hornet Also, there are still adaboxes available.
are you going to further reverse engineer the bluetooth clock ?
Now is shower, later is drive
supervisor.reload() ๐
maybe if you hit enter not at then end of the line ?
ah yeah the cursor is displayed a the beginning of the word, it's weird
there might be 3rd party keyboards that have a ctrl button on it if you interested in installing something else for it.
Someday Bond may hit back.
oh yeah reload does nothing in the REPL, hmmmm
Oh, I can... I love this. I'm taking it to Isla del Coco where we only have one usable computer.
(and something like 8 park rangers trying to code)
fix your code without your laptop. I can dig it!
What would be the difference with linux? I'm not well versed on BLE, but maybe I can play with it a little bit.
Could something like this be replicated using ble cli tools in linux?
to exit the REPL use the quit() function
Does code mirror handle python/
stubs?
(I'm waiting for that @smoky island stubs PR to get in)
stubs are live currently on pypi I believe. The remaining PR is more for efficiency (excluding some files that aren't actually necessary.)
now, to test it on the Micro:bit v2 ๐
There is some code outthere to user antlr with Monaco, since antlr can generate parsers in many languages including JS and TS
That's how you know we are in a deep dive... If an alpha-3 is too old ๐
right now i'm trying to connect to the bluetooth clock/temp/humidity display
its a rabbit holw
refresh or save to file to read the PDF
yes, same here.
like scroll "Bluetooth" on the leds
the USB chip is connected to serial, making it suitable for REPL access in Micropython
yeah, I'm also sitting with a bad posture.. I hope to fix that by switching to a hammock in my new house...
yeah it might be confusing if we do REPL here
I like how the oooold, old IBM machines actually had the syntax check, compilation and linking as two separate steps (as in punch cards), so it's pretty clear which is which.
pow3 should be power, power fload and long double functions.
(in glibc at least..)
sounds of seaplanes landing on lake union ?
156 for 740 ( remember this )
112 for s113
112 for s113
Can you imagine a classroom of kids making that sound? :รพ
Great stream, really enjoying seeing under the hood! Thank you ๐
And thanks for making editing over BLE so easy. I wasn't planning on taking BLE stuff to Isla del Coco, but now it's a must.
I'll play with it.
have a great weekend - happy 4th to the USA folks ๐
thanks all!
Belated thanks Scott. Had a phone call early on in the stream. Will have to watch it later.
About to get started streaming. We are in for a treat this morning!
I'll be demo-ing the beta for Adafruit Wippersnapper. Hang out with me here in the chat, on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xshKsyW75Sc
Wippersnapper!
I get that a lot also.
I just use jar cvf backup.zip e:\.
bcr/blinka-cli looks cool.

No PIR so I found an alternate use for it.
Can you take individual feeds offline, or is it all or none?
Yeah, looks like if you disable the feed you will have to delete it, then re-create it.
I guess if you want to keep the data but not add any more.
Chat window is blocking the led.
cool
The guides are awesome. Use them all the time.
I think the two white wires are a 'hack', the water sensor was originally presented as a binary sensor. This allows it to measure water level rather than just water presense.
Was going to say you probable got throttled for sending too many updates (from the touchpad).
Do you have https://www.adafruit.com/product/3894
Here's how I set up the NeoPixel on the FunHouse:
import board
from neopixel import NeoPixel
ring = NeoPixel(board.PIR_SENSE, 16, brightness=0.1)
ring.fill(0x99FF00)

Thanks all, hope everyone has a great weekend!
@smoky island thanks for streaming using Wippersnapper, I'm going to watch it tomorrow.
For sure, thanks for getting me setup to try out the beta. Really cool stuff!
np, I'm sure the rest of the team will be interested in watching it as well.
I'm watching it now.

Does it react to a magnetic field?
Pretty sure only electrical fields
that's pretty slick wiring, JP
Very smooth
Where's your code screen @haughty quiver ? can't see!

And rainbow headers
I have no idea what to do with mine XD
I'm working through the custom fonts learn guide right now, to put any font on my eink display https://learn.adafruit.com/custom-fonts-for-pyportal-circuitpython-display

Thanks @haughty quiver
eInk is so cool
JP, did you get the date from serial in your example?
Thanks JP!
He did
Indeed :D
Thanks!
He had a Python script on the host machine
Thanks @haughty quiver !
Bye JP! thX!

Mhmm
I was a bit scattered just got off work
thanks all very kindly!
while True:
date_str = str(input())
day,date = date_str.split("/")

@haughty quiver Remember...the more expensive the better for the product picks ;) The 50% discount is great.
#Host to send to ItsyBitsy M4 w eInk Breakout
import serial
import time
#edit to match port
serial_port = '/dev/tty.usbmodem141201'
ser = serial.Serial(serial_port)
print(ser.name)
while True:

print("sending date_str:",date_str, end="")
ser.write( bytes(date_str, 'utf-8') )
time.sleep(60*60)
ser.close()```
I think this is the cheapest price I've seen for an eInk breakout or eink in general
Does anyone have cheap but useful product picks in cents or a few $ that I should add to this order while placing it
@quick veldt These won't necessarily pair well with e-ink but Potentiometers and Rotaries are cheap and great to have around.
Rotary Encoder + Extras
https://www.adafruit.com/product/377
I bought one of these e-inks because, ya know, 50% off!
I should have bought a couple. But by the time I thought to, I didn't see an "edit cart" option. That makes it about $200 spent on Adafruit in last few weeks alone. Fun fun fun (and I got no t-bird or daddy to take it away--sorry, old people's reference/joke)

Nothing in particular came to mind in terms of the design. It was more of a puzzle trying to figure out what to do with the negative space in the design. Everything was designed around the modem, considering it was the largest component. I also wanted to make sure it could fit in a pocket too lol.
@haughty quiver Thank you

Q for Lady Ada: I would love to see a digikey search on fans. I am using an Ender3 Pro 24v PSU and looking for a replacement 24v fan Motherboard and Hotend.
i've had trouble finding 24V 3d printing fans on digikey. amazon & ebay are better usually.
