Hackster did a great video today with elkei on some new solder kits today that look amazing!
Thanks for another excellent evening of shows, @open girder
thank you!
Thanks @open girder and good night. π
thanks Adafruit!

great rendition, can't miss the tune the second time
(Let's do the) Time Warp again (again)
'night all
I was thinking solder one of these: https://www.adafruit.com/product/4726
to the back of the QTpy
to be able to drop and swap the flash easily.
Night all! Thanks for the great chat!
With a hot air gun and such.

@wild urchin Pads on QT Py are for narrow. Let us know how it works out.
@forest flicker Then I would suggest you get an Adabox subscription!
ASAP, before they sell out.
Because that's where I got my first Hallowing, and where I got the M4sk board.
I tend to jump both feet in and bought a bunch of random boards and things the other day. They shipped today! I went to the python link and I did get a Clue board :D. I also ordered a metro 328 and Metro M4. There are some metros in the list but I donβt see those models. Do you know if I can used circuit python on them?
And since @proper trench and @open girder are likely to top themselves again, it's a good risk of $60.
@wild urchin okay! Iβll order one now π
Wonderful! Thank you!!
We can move this over to #general-tech or #help-with-circuitpython if you want to keep talking

Hello all. π
Hi
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks!
Hi all!
Hi Lars! I mean, JP.
Good afternoon, @haughty quiver
I think today's show will be the best one yet, but who's keeping score...
It's nearly HalLarsWeen...
JP, you may earn the Master Punner role if you keep that up π

let me see if hte latest builds.
i wish i was napping in the sun
its was really nice here yesterday, tomorrow we are expecting a monsoon
actually i'm happy with the rain. its bad but it keeps the tourists away
i just realized i'm at 3 PRs, maybe I should sign up
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks!
End of day phone calls always slow me down joining Scott's streams -- and I might bounce early again too.
For those Monty Pythonistas
I actually did not know this "According to the creator Guido Van Rossum, the name of this language was derived from the British comedy series 'Monty Pythonβs Flying Circusβ' "
I need to find my JTAG....I haven't used it in ages, and I believe I put it away. In a box. Somewhere.
Is the current esp-idf now merged?
Nice, thumbs up to @hollow dust and @gray valley for getting that done
500mhz. wow.
On a microcontroller board. I remember when I upgraded from a 286 -> 386 -> 486dx to a blazing fast 120mhz Pentium 1. Then again, that was what....1996?
I think current micros are quite a bit faster than the original ibm370's i worked on
Ha yeah a 33Mhz 486, like oh wow
I remember the old 8088. That was my first computer, and I don't remember how fast it was. Snails racing turtles.
ya C64 at a whopping 1 Mhz
Wow! how does that effect performance..
So, with boards with co-processors. How do the chips talk to each other? SPI? Or different protocols?

i think th ere are a lot of FX2 powered logic analyzers. Super cheap and fast.
People so rarely get that equation, that saving time pays for itself
Sorry if I missed it could you post a link to the logic analyzer repo that you started?
yes, its easy to calculate.
its on his tannewt repo
Thanks I'll check it out
well the latest main builds and works for the ttgo boards i have. which is only to be expected.

that is super pretty artwork.
how hard is it for the python developer to work detect and work around running code.py twice ?
just dont operate heavy machinery with it

( why did Unexpected Maker care - just time ? )
yes, all my devices have max 4MB of flash. and have no issues
good logic Scott - but could a user work around using the file system ? ( probably not good to be writing to flash in that timeframe ??? )

another thing i've discovered here is ag. which is my new love,
tio also is an awesome find from these streams
i tried it on a mac, and no issues with the smaller flash.
i have one of everything. my place is a mess of laptops
I currently rely on that autoreload functionality..
lol, quite true. all my nas dirves are littered with mac stuff
but why only the larger flash? i do wish i had one to try.
yay, printf debug

or bit twiddling and a logic analyzer,
well my s2 is in the mail. i should get it by .....

not a 6.0 stopper - ( document it as a 'feature' π )
you were working with bluetooth stuff - where does bluetooth fit in 6.0
yikes
bikes are dangerous, thats my approach. all my mtb friends show up in casts
is there some standard template code code we could all add to code.py that might gather information about autoreload?

Hello!
Hi @haughty quiver
Hello!
It's almost Kewpie Doll time!
music on YT
Audio very good: peaking at -6db
A/V desync on Youtube
yeah.
I want to get a few more QT Py boards, so I can have a small forest of them standing up out of my Anker USB hub.
If you're jonesing for a QT Py but they're out of stock, a Trinket M0 is functionally the same, CircuitPython-wise
It's mostly the visual of tiny boards standing on their USB plugs.
I have a couple of Sperpente boards, and a QT Py
So I'm pretty good on that right now.
I should get another ruler, though. I've lost the one I bought.
Spooky music!
Thanks @haughty quiver
Thanks!
I turned off the camera and then ate the QT Py.
It falls into the chips food group.
Yes, it is good with dip. I hear.
@haughty quiver I know we need to get trace elements in our diet, but I didn't think you'd have to digest them from actual traces.
heh oops
it's okay, it's RoHS
phew
no lead, just yummy silver and tin
Say, does anyone know if it was in sync on Twitch and only out of sync on YT?
Yeah, definitely prefer unleaded in our chips.
wanders off to go solder some Tostedos.

Hi, all!
When is the time to ask questions? Can I queue it here, or I better wait?
@wind spoke They are answered at the end of the show. I'd suggest asking your question, tagging @open girder , and prefixing it with QUESTION:
@wind spoke It'll be near the end of the broadcast -- it's not a bad idea to @ adafruit and prefix it with "Question:", but that'll be later. Or if it's something the community might know, ask here π
Is the chibiscope sticking around, even though the chibichip is discontinued?
That might not count for AskAnEngineer.
thanks @haughty quiver !
QUESTIONS for @open girder (but the community can be faster):
- How would you communicate between two QT-Py (preferably CircuitPython)?
- Electrically, can I safely plug a Stemma QT cable between the two?
3a) If I2C communication is not possible without resistor, is non I2C communication possible over that link?
3b) If I can do I2C, then can one be i2cperipheral of the other?
Oooh. Good questions.
(I can also ask that "in the weed" at next meeting)
For (2), maybe having two power source could be an issue, except if from the same computer?
Maybe you could tie ground pins together?
@wind spoke If connecting two microcontrollers, I would cut the red power line, so you're not sending V+ to each other.
Ground is in the I2C of the StemmaQT I guess...
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels.
@slow spire That makes sense to me.
@wind spoke If connecting two microcontrollers, I would cut the red power line, so you're not sending V+ to each other.
@slow spire Does that mean powering one QT-Py from the other... over that link?
Yeah, I don't know if there's harm in tying the V+ together, but it's not needed for I2C, so I'd avoid it.
@open girder Question: Can you power a QT-Py over the STEMMA link from another STEMMA board?
@wind spoke And here's a reference in CircuitPython 5.3 for setting a second MCU to I2C secondary (fka slave):
https://circuitpython.readthedocs.io/en/5.3.x/shared-bindings/i2cslave/__init__.html
I feel I have open a box. But that question is in my mind since a long time... and now it can be attempt at low cost and without soldering. I will be happy to sacrifice a QT-Py for SCIENCE. π
@slow spire I've been there. I just need to check if i2cperiferal (new name in 6.0.0) module is build in into the QT-Py firmware.
But electrical issue is what I understand the less. Also I2C need Pull UP(?) resistor, It's build into the Raspberry Pi, but with Feather or Stemma, I think the Pull resistor are in the periferical... so with two QT-Py, I don't know if it can work.
But with the SPI?
do you need bidirectional communication?
Not really, but if possible yes.
you could do UART over the i2c wires
bidirectional may not work though
since the wires aren't crossed
So that answer the 3a) I can use the I2C pin to do non I2C communication... like UART but deciding on where is TX and RX.
I can have on QT-Py act as "reverse TX/RX".
@rapid hornet Do you know offhand if connecting two QT Pys over Stemma QT would cause problems with backpowering over the V+ wire?
I think this is why LadyAda don't put Pull XX resistor, so that pin can be reused for non I2C (as oppose to what Raspberry Pi does).
I would think yes if you have them both plugged into their own power
@open girder Question: Is the ChibiScope sticking around, even if the ChibiChip is discontinued?
And powering one QT-Py with the other over the Stemma link???
@open girder Question: Is the ChibiScope sticking around, even if the ChibiChip is discontinued?
@wild urchin What, discontinued? What happened?
@wind spoke I don't know, it's just listed as Discontinued in Adafruit's shop.
my guess is that you can power on qt off another
shout out to everyone watching Ask An Engineer over the AMA
the stemma +V is connected to the same rail that powers the samd
this is interesting
only issues with i2c between two stemma is the lack of pullups on the SDA/SCL lines
Maybe the 5V rail is not needed, and the 3V over Stemma is enough for using the other QT.
@wind spoke I doubt you can get bidirectional UART because the pins that can do TX are limited
as if this detect magenetic field so could be able to make some cool things when could be make maglev effect hovering like back in the future
the regulator on one qtpy should be able to power more than one
usually it's 200+mA iirc
and the samd should be <20
@rapid hornet @wind spoke Looks like, from the schematic, one might be able to backpower, as long as the second QT Py is not connected to power, and the draw is less than 500mA.
But I'd check with Ladyada.
will get to these Qs at the end, all good
@rapid hornet Maybe I can bit bang any protocol I want, I mean if UART or SPI or ??? is not available on those pin.
you could do regular wire i2c but I don't think over stemma would be possible since no pull ups on the SCL/SDA
SPI would be doable
run one as main, the other in secondary
SPI would only be one direction too
At one point I wanted to use that Stemma board that adapt the I2C ??? to go over long distance.

Heh, I wasn't expecting it to show up under new products today.
Adafruit Grayscale 1.5" 128x128 OLED Graphic Display - STEMMA QT / Qwiic https://www.adafruit.com/product/4741
This OLED goes out to all the fans who want more pixels! Normally our 128x64 OLEDs are the biggest ones we've stocked that can use I2C. This one is a whopping 128x128 pixels and it even ...
Yay @ornate coyote
Thanks @split gazelle & @wild urchin
Wait, what time is it now for @ornate coyote ?
@wind spoke Lunch time!!!
9:05pm
Is the Grayscale display also the display @proper trench was testing in the Great Digi-Key Search for aluminum standoffs?
Wifi CLUE !!!
And eventually the M7 Metro
That was the Ghost detector Stemma board.
QUESTION: Do you think, on average, the new Greyscale 1.5 OLED draws more, or less, current than the Color 1.5 OLED (using the Adafruit snowflake image as an example)? I'm working on a low power project (where I specifically need an OLED) and I'm wondering which is better for that use case. Thanks!
Sub-question... can you save a lot by going light grey vs dark grey?
That scanner is soooo cool
Q: @adafruit business question. How do you handle products that dont sell or have been sitting in inventory a while? Liquidate? how do you handle returns or bad boards during production? I feel that returns can be killer for an open hardware company's bottom line. Thanks.
matrix scanner
Hi, I'm working on a crazy project that requires a small mobile I2C full mini keyboard. Do you guys have any recommendations? I'm currently messing with a M5Stack keyboard but it's not that great nor reliable. It also requires 5v which is costly power-wise for a mobile project. If you are able to recommend a better keyboard with arrow keys, that would be appreciated or if you can make a better one that would also be VERY appreciated! Thanks!
Is there a connector you would consider to be standard for UART like Qwiic/Stemma QT is now for I2C?
Emulating the ChibiScope on something like the CLUE was my idea. π
Thanks for dealing with the question @open girder .
That NetTV(?) HDMI overlay thing... you have a lot of them in stock, and they are not cheap.
Yeah great persone, great product, great values!
Fair enough, getting a couple of chibiscopes now.
Thanks @open girder @pt love your business question reponses. Really helpful as always as I try to build my business.
They actually make those BlackBerry keyboards still new from what I've heared
FeatherWing Keyboard? Arturo keyboard thing?
(I kinda want to use it for scoping signals from my Korg Volca Semi-Modular synth)
I'm doing just in time kind of manufacturing
limor and phil are really good at deciding why a project is cool. learn guides are a great forcing function for knowing why folks will buy a product
(clones of course, not original Blackberry :) )
Can I put an order for A + B + C where B is not available... and then you ship it when the 3 are available?
I ran a company that didn't sell well π
Adafruit efficiency is amazing
@wind spoke You simply won't be able to order 'B'.
what did you make @rapid hornet ?
modular flight controllers for racing quadcopters
@rapid hornet wish me luck! π©
oooooh!
you can always get an email when B becomes available I guess
@wind spoke You simply won't be able to order 'B'.
@waxen thistle Well, if B was available, but never simultaneously as A and C, it is still possible to put that on your shopping card.
@rapid hornet Should I ask you about TinyWhoops?
@wind spoke Nope -- you'll have to place multiple orders.
Thanks folks π
Thanks @open girder and good night. π
bottom board is mine
Thanks for the show tonight!!!!
thanks for the stream, have a good night
so smalll
oh cool @rapid hornet love the color
My problem was that A, B and C were never available at the same time.
Good show, great discussions going on tonight
Love you guys! See you soon!
@open girder Thanks for another awesome evening of shows! You folks rock.
Thank you everyone
ah that sounds like a complicated inventory problem π
You folx bring me hope.

Yeah, the music and the graphics are definitely making me think that this Adabox might be full of RiffRaff.
@wind spoke Resellers such as Digikey are always another possibility.
@rapid hornet for sure on the markup, but the out of box experience has to be stellar and that's where CP can make a huge difference especially with USB host drag and drop.
[looks up, Scott linked it already. beat me to it π ]
the other thing that can be undervalued is marketing
@wind spoke Nope -- you'll have to place multiple orders.
@waxen thistle Oversee ordering with import tax is really costly. So I tried to optimise my order, but I ended not ordering "B". Having the QT-Py and the SPI chip available simultaneously was hard, getting the BrainBonnet (or whatever the name) mad it harder, having also the Matrix Portal was challenging. But there was a last product I wanted, and could never get "simultaneously".
@wind spoke Resellers such as Digikey are always another possibility.
@waxen thistle Yes, most of my Adafruit things are from Pimoroni. π
@wind spoke Check to see if there's a local distributor, that might be cheaper than ordering it directly. If they don't carry what you want, ask them and maybe they'll add it to their stock since there's demand.
On the other and, I wanted to support Adafruit, and wanted the lattest and greatest product to stay on the edge.
On QT-Stemma 'pal'... CP may be memory challenged, but something like a Py Portal could dynamically download driver example for any QT Stemma sensor that was plugged in and not have to store all of the drivers on board necessarily. It would be cool to put a string of sensors together and have them automagically create a tile of data on the screen.
So when the CLUE came, I did not wait for Reseller to have it, I wanted to try ASAP. π

Greetings Scott! I was curious when using CircuitPython (in genreal, but specifically with the ESP32-S2) is it be possible to use the status/control lines of the UART (RTS, CTS, etc)? I know it can be done in Arduino, but I've not had much luck figuring out how to do it with CircuitPython
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels.
Oh cool! Sadly no DCD, but I can probably work around that
No worries, it matters a lot on retro machines which are slower than the ESP32-S2 in most cases π
that's an H89 - build one myself π
Yeah! I helped with the hardware and software on this and we want to make an ESP32-S2 version with CircuitPython. It's basically a WiFi enabled "modem" so you can telnet or netcat to/from your retro device https://electronicsisfun.com/gurumodem
( and I still have it - but it's been a while since I powered it up ) -- ( maybe z89 was the pre-built one ? )
I think Z89 was the Zenith branded one
Thanks for the help Scott
Cosmic ray...
RTOS gives you determistic latency
I used ChibiOS a long time ago. It has a HAL to access hardware
I went through the entire Zephyr clone/build process a few weeks ago. was surprised it all worked
Do you know if there is any trick to using both screens on Monster M4sk? It's got board.RIGHT_DISPLAY and board.DISPLAY but when I run displayio code and show graphics it always shows on the left display, no matter which of those is used.
*Note: Needs a 443 MHz board, not 915 like in the american continent
Yay @rapid hornet congrats on CP6-rc0

This will be a talk by the Electroniccats crew, about how to contribute to CircuitPython
Sorry, workshop
19th
no new bugs!
@rapid hornet, why is your circuitpython clone off micropython instead of off adafruit/circuitpython?
whoa, mind blown
I might need more "stack?" on QT-Py (this was posted in #circuitpython-dev but was noticed):
I am playing with a NeoTrellis connected with STEMMA.
With the STM32F405, no problem, the neotrellis_simpletest works ok any way I try.
With the QT-Py Haxpress, if main.py contain "import neotrellis_simpletest" I get
"RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded"
If I just rename neotrellis_simpletest.py into main.py, then I don't have that problem.
Maybe the QT-Py need a bit more of stack(?) love, no recursion involved, just neotrellis calling seesaw, calling bus_device.
I'll retry with RC0.

Just read the adafruit beaglebone black page ( mentioned earlier while the discussion was regarding raspberry pi ) - didn't realize that the BB Black didn't boot to circuitpython - insted of Linux.
Sounds like the interest is leaning towards RPI - but the PRU processors in the BB might be a second target for CP as well of / or instead of CP booting bare metal on the BB.
Interesting that there are projects like driving NeoPixels from the PRU for the BB
https://beagleboard.org/static/prucookbook/
so many projects to prioritize - I assume RPI and FPGA might come before CP on PRU π
@timid plover might be interesting to see a BBB pru port for CP
I use a beaglebone black for my senior design project. The PRU make it particularly advantageous for our project compared to the RPi

QUESTION: @open girder
I ran into an issue with the dotstar ultra bars not behaving as per the datasheet more than a month ago, but haven't been able to get any useful attention on this from the tech support forum or by emails (https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=169377&start=15).
In the meantime, I've reproduced the issue with multiple different HW/SW setups on my own, verified that the same HW/SW setups produce correct behavior on other adafruit-sold APA102-2020 devices, and even gotten a member of the discord to reproduce the erroneous behavior on their own dotstar ultra bar and control setup.
What's the best way to get attention on this? It would be great for someone at adafruit to verify the function of this product, given that it's being sold by adafruit and... apparently not behaving as per the datasheet. Maybe the manufacturer is not actually using APA102-2020 LEDs?
Question: For the OLED displays, there's a warning not to run them over 1000 hours or they'll start to dim. Is this total lifetime cumulative hours, or just not to run them continuously for long periods? Eitther way, it doesn't sound like it would be good for clock projects or any "always on" sensor display.
No, that's ,why I need to set up to NOT allow strangers. π
Question: If you have to start a new format (not metro, not feather, not qtpy) of board, what would you not include in it?
Question:
Does Adafruit offer any (or plan to offer) RFID read/writer boards for the 125 khz band? One that uses the em4100 spec.
This works with the Galaxy Edge Kyber crystals. Hoping to build my own Holocron that reads Kybers.
Thank you for your time.
QUESTION: How would you have surived COVID/2020 if it happeed when Adafruit was much smaller?
Q: @adafruit when you first started adafruit, how did you afford inventory? You did not raise money or take loans, but inventory buildup is alot out of pocket. How do you do it now investing in inventory?
I got the goocle cardboard voice kit for the RPi that has a big arcade button you have to push for it to listen π

OK, den speaker is adjusted.
@open girder: On the new metro: What's the odd hex-shaped pad that's not populated?
Or one of the LiPo power packs Iβm making for the qt py
Thanks for answering. My questions tend to be a bit weird.
Still amused by pt's adaflower hat
@subtle raptor Have you tried LoRa? (there is satellite LoRa now a days, btw)
Limor and PT: We all love and appreciate you.
I have a Weller Digital -- it's good too. If you're looking for replacement tips, Hakko tips are much more common than wellers (so I've found).
Have you seen the bangle.js watch from espruino and will you sell it?
Hakko!
@open girder you are the best company! You do so much for the open source community, you rock! Just thought I'd say that...
Well said
There are two old sayings from the boy scouts that hold so true -- "Be Prepared" and "Do a good turn daily."

thanks limor & pt!
I do miss Mosfet!
Hello, all.
Hello!
Hi all.
Bleeps and Bloops are imminent...
YT is currently a Bleeps wasteland...
(Switching to Twitch)...
hello hello hello!
Howdy!
Hi JP.
hello!
Hello @haughty quiver
Thar she bleeps!
Bleeps and Bloops on YT!
Hey everyone!
music audio is peaking at about -2db.
Solar device charging - sounds like fun. I can't wait until we have lunar device charging. π
voice audio is peaking nicely at -6db.
Lllllarrrrssss
LCARS?
I just got my adabox today, haven't opened it yet, but can't wait to see what's inside!
I'm Horror-fied
Got mine as well yesterday. Love it
love that movie
The theme might be a little Rocky.
Weirdest first date movie, ever.
audio quality on YT is great
LCARS.
Full John Mode: Enabled.
I literally impulse-bought about $90 worth of gear while impulse buying the pick of the week.
nice!
I don't know why it's called Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot though.
I think two of them are going outside, over and under the Hallowing M4, out on the fence post at the end of the front walkway.
Animate something when waved at.
Thanks for the reminder about ADABOX. Looked at my email and saw the delivery notification. Ohh, all these projects I've watching for the past few weeks, can be made now.
8 bit int of channels?
I have the older version of this, which works great. I think it was the first thing I ever soldered.
The old version didn't regulate the output power and the only reason I didn't use it, was at the time I had no idea what to do in that case
I've debated getting a larger one, I have a 2.5w (or so) which still works well, but if I have few somewhat cloudy days any extra power is great
I want to put one or more of them on a pan-tilt rig to track the sun. You should be able to wiggle it every few minutes to find the local maximum current from the panel to track the sun's location.
Apparently I'm not allowed to cut my neighbors trees down that block the sun to my yard at times
@nova totem Can you not cut the branches on your side?
Because I ordered one with the impulse buys
Yeah, the parts of the trees in the way are more fully in their yard and high up. I just moved where I had my project located. The sun moves a lot during the year at my latitude so its tough to find a year long good spot
And I just looked at my order history for this month, and it was about twice as much as I expected.
Solar it goes
Neat solar charger thing. I've always wanted to build something like that
It looks like a pretty straightforward build.
My weather station has ran (mostly) uninterrupted on solar for months now. Even with almost a week of clouds it kept going
I need one of these. Thanks for showing how it can be done, @haughty quiver .
I think this will be the first time I get an Adabox before the unboxing vid
heh.
Thanks, @haughty quiver π
Thanks @haughty quiver
Can one use the windspeed indicator as a generator?
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels.
@wild urchin in theory yes but i'm not sure how much power it would provide. Also it may no longer give an accurate wind speed indication (as energy needs to turn the generator motor)
Thank you Mr. Park - always glad I tuned in
it was park John park workshop
Honestly, I'm sort of hoping that it will involve building an analog delay circuit.
Because I want some of it to involve a timewarp.
thanks all!
@haughty quiver You're welcome!
ROFL... timewarp...
I mean, it kinda reads like assembly - JMP left, STEP right ...
You are not wrong! Never thought about it before. π
I'm going to try to add it.
@rapid hornet No deep dive today?
@ornate coyote 1 more hour. we haven't done daylight savings yet
oh, doh!
have you?

Good afternoon all you wonderful folks!
I might not be able to stick around, but you can't fail until you try π
Hi Scott.
Twitch and YT are good.
Hey
It was 82 degrees here in Northeastern PA yesterday.
Got my flu shot. Voted in our provincial election. And it snowed.
Which is insanely warm for late October
Hi all.
