I think it's just those three
?showtimes-utc
(gmt)
K. It doesn't recognise UTC.
I just tuned in to Show And Tell, and have to say. I'm a fan of this right now.
Well, GMT is near enough. ๐
if there are others let me know and I can add them
but they aren't easy to maintain
@rapid hornet Where does the bot get that data from?
Hey, so how do we get on the show?
its just a dyno custom command
@bold scarab click the streamyard link and retry if it's full
people leave after they are done
I always want to know if there's a json for pyportal... I think it's a sickness ๐ (a good one...)
haha, nope. not that fancy
i love seeing the windowed masks popping up
They're so cool
Being hard of hearing, I look at people's mouths a lot when they speak.
Also easier to clean off food when I forget to take mine off before I eat. ๐
lars is always watching

A new clock? Well, it's about time!
I second that.
@rapid hornet congrats getting that working!
I'm working on a clock too. It's mandatory, I think
Yes, more clocks! ๐
This is what I did with Pimoroni's Scroll Bot
ah thanks @inner spade that's the link I was looking for :]
I should check out what cgrover is doing about daylight saving time
@haughty quiver 'sall good. The other link was a non-PCB version of the same clock.
ahhh
@rapid hornet Almost ready (the pyportal)
... and https://github.com/CedarGroveStudios/Unit_Converter (for the DST converter) @robust horizon
looks great @sage aspen !!
๐
That is the Mother of All Signs
I don't know much about the pixel purses, but I see a number of people getting them to re-use the matrix displays. Are they super inexpensive that way?
Thanks @split gazelle
Awesome sign Melissa!
Looking forward to seeing @sage aspen's library as I have some Pixel Purses on order. ๐
@haughty quiver when I picked them up, they were going for around $6-7 each
I paid ยฃ9 for mine. Not sure how that translates to USD...
They've gone back up to around $40
I got them off Amazon, so I don't think they "fell off a truck"
The magnet mask strap is pretty slick!
It's still Matrix Show and Tell
We're reaching Matrix central.
nice @low fractal !
give me a nice ws2812 array any day ๐
Where's Neo?
he took the red pill?
that's cool @split gazelle
Why not the PET plastic you have on the store for that?
Awesome @split gazelle
Yay @alpine cargo !
thanks @haughty quiver @lavish patrol && @sage aspen !

Woa! Old school.
Right now we can't stream MP3s, only a file from SD or built in flash works. We'd love to lift the limitation but so many other projects are calling. (I don't know if web transfers are fast enough anyway)

ah, tim! I have a transistor zenith that looks similar and needs some love

@rapid hornet I started posting here: https://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/index.php. These guys/gals are very knowledgeable.
That's pretty sweet.
that looks really neat
๐ I have too many projects
heh, I have a long backlog of products
not excited about the high voltages of tubes
Thanks everyone.
@rapid hornet I think my backlog of projects will be cleared about two weeks after I kick the bucket. ๐
Cool projects everyone. ๐
yup, it's fun to have a backlog
Yes, the chassis can be live on those old radios/TVs, so a lot of folks use an isolation transformer...or a well-insulated poking-stick.

backlogs are nice so when one frustrates you, there is another to switch to
is matt in here too?

I think I saw an article that there were indictments handed down this afternoon....
it's been great to see more and more companies signing on
Yep.
I am mistaken. I didn't find an article about tht.
@analog acorn I think that was for a different murder. (the nytimes notifications?)
I think it was. Been a busy day....
hi adapeeps
this is shareable on FB? or an image we all can copy OK for #StopHateForProfit ?

Yeah, I'll talk to my company board to #StopHateForProfit here in CR.

@rapid hornet Which circuitpython chips are rad hardened? Or are they for CubeSats that decay before the integrity degradation becomes a problem?
none that I know of. I think they are cubesats with samd51s
Cool! I will do some homework.
Usually multiple MCU/CPU too, since the cache can be degraded on orbit too.
Coming soon to a Feature board near you.
anyone have the mram link? I'm curious to see the pricing
will MRAM get erased if a magnet is held near it?
Good evening all you wonderful folks!
@waxen thistle ๐
Capture Card
i'd imagine the thermal paste blocks the chip info pretty good...
Pi on HDMI
A picture is worth a 1,000 words -- a good HDMI adapter is worth two shows worth of words ๐
haha. nice one Melissa!
Thanks
Lol.
@rapid hornet maybe? https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/m1000-m3000-series-mram
@lavish patrol I take it our favorite batch of Twitch-bot cylons made their appearance after 33 minutes?
i quick read an fram v. mram article. looks like mram has retention up to 20 years; twice as long as fram. which is nice for those time capsules.
@waxen thistle You are correct. Our vipers took care of them.
So say we all.
Excited about the HDMI adapters, I have a Canon camera I'd like to set up for streaming
@robust horizon I know of a few folks who'd love this -- their current one is a USB elgato device that they have unkind words regarding the stability.
@robust horizon I was looking at hooking my Nikon up for the same purpose but the cost of devices put me off it
I'll also need to have a DC adapter, my camera (7D) uses the "battery replacement" style. I bet there's a 3d printable version..
Some cameras, especially older DSLRs, weren't designed for the always-on video capture. The OSD remains on for video capture if not recording, or even worse, overheating.
yeah it may not work out, but I gotta try it
Oh I'll be nabbing one too -- and crossing my fingers ๐
when will the feather huzzah32 with stacking headers come back in stock?
Q: @open girder What was the biggest hurdle adafruit faced as the business grew? what timeline and events in your growth felt like an inflection point?
QQ: of the 14 temp sensors in the shop, is there one to use as the most accurate for comparison, or should I just use the mean? (Maybe the PT1000?)
@robust horizon did you check to see if your camera can use the new firmware to connect directly?
@rapid hornet yeah it wasn't in the first group, and because it's so old I doubt it'll come
I want to build a jig by which I can clamp a board in for testing. Of the many styles of pogo pins, which would be best?
Q: Any tips on making shields in Eagle? Tried to make one recently and I found the process to be pretty difficult to reference a boards pinout compared to referencing a chips pinout. I'm new to Eagle so I may have just been doing it wrong.
Any good place to get rotating motorized pots ?
Q: @open girder when will the feather huzzah32 with stacking headers come back in stock?
@gusty wedge there is also digital pots. https://makezine.com/projects/make-43/digital-potentiometers/

@languid wraith thanks, that's what I'm using right now, but musicians what to feel the pots.
(so a cont rot servo with encoder doesn't work either ๐ฆ )
yeah the 7dmkii is on the list, original 7d still isnt
@open girder you should set up @ancient furnace to grab the YT chat and put it into this channel, and put the discord chat into the YT chat. (along w/ twitch chat to discord to yt and vice versa)
Question: Would the nRF52840 ever make a future inclusion in the next version of a PyPortal as the main processor along with the ESP32... reason I ask .. with the nRF52840 it could get Apple Notifications and also connect to Adafruit IO .. and get data from both on the same screen ?
@open girder thanks PT!

I'm in full support of Kattni continuing this awesome newsletter post-covid, if she's up for it. It's so relaxing ๐

goodnight @lavish patrol
Night @lavish patrol !
I have seen zero delays in shipping. It's like nothing happened. Great job!
@rapid hornet ignore my email! @clear matrix's news has link for info etc.
That's a pretty rad LED sign @sage aspen !
Thanks @waxen thistle
Yeah, @sage aspen , I definitely want to build one of those!
I'm planning on making a video after I get my library polished up so that others can build one too.
I remember my old HS back in the day spent a lot of money for an LED sign -- which took a lot of time to program over a clunky infrared controller. Your sign looks about 1000x better and probably 100x cheaper.
๐ That was a one of my goals

thank you for everything you do and thank you for a great set of shows!

I'm not sure. I've actually never used MakeCode before. @haughty quiver do you happen to know?
@rancid depot I suspect it's just using the wrong .svg graphic but is actually compiling for the correct board.
@rancid depot confirmed -- I just connected up a Feather nRF52840 and flashed it from MakeCode sucessfully.
Thanks for checking @haughty quiver

Election cow?
@severe vigil https://electioncal.us
Colorado, Delaware -
what pins are you using?
You said that some pins don't go thru the iomux?
๐ฎ
not cow
Ahah, thanks. Itโs awesome.
ligatures are two characters that get turned into onee character.
For those who use compose on their keyboards, compose + "/" + "=" -> โ
doesn;'t circuitpython usually ignore the hardware chip selects to allow you to use any pin for CS
okay
if iโm hearing correctly you have a mech keyboard..? What kind are you using if i may ask?
@rapid hornet I switched to this chat ๐ I just wanted to check, that 0x61...is that a value from the sensor (periph)...and on the logic analyzer it shows it correctly on the miso pin....but it's just the ESP32 not reading it correctly?
So it's almost certain that the sensor, and the wiring is correct?
I thought so...just wanted to double check. If it's the sensor sending 0x61 then it must be receiving the commands from the host.

<@&327289013561982976>
ok, enough gifs
Omar Abdalla#1201 was muted
I wonder...if the logic analyzer is showing correct data...and it seems that the code is also correct...then maybe something in between isn't right...and the gpio matrix is one part...but what about DMA? maybe that's not correct? maybe it's not being transferred correctly?
Do you have another unit you can test the code on?
lmao
is there another way that you could verify the pin's hardware is functioning properly ?
Anyone else just stick their super sharp tweezer tips 2mm into their fingers? or was it just me
@ornate coyote I stuck a needle into my finger instead...
Yes, found it.
@drifting arch Sewing?
here i successfully made a latte.
@ornate coyote this time I was using it to remove flux from under a MCU pin...I have these crazy thin needles.
Is it ok to ship a TinyPICO you just bled all over? Like literally built with blood sweat and tears!
there are a lot of places that could go wrong - how to rule them all out ?
But yes...I do sewing a lot...we talked about that on some stream the other day...can't remember whose it was.
@drifting arch Acupuncture needles?
@ornate coyote I can believe the blood and tears...but sweat...it's winter there.
yes ! examples! ๐
@rapid hornet did you try with DMA turned off?
Noooo!!!!! no examples!!! that's cheating!
^
brute force or nothing!
true pros just do it.
@simple fractal ๐ฏ
Any other change from the last pr that could be affecting this?
speaking of complexity - is the RTOS layer still involved?
Omar Abdalla#1201 was muted

Doesnโt circuitpython also schedule its background tasks in a way that can make CircuitPython scripts non deterministic?
(besides python generally being on the slow side)
@rapid hornet half duplex is simpler to debug...so I'd stick with it turned on...
@rapid hornet does the sensor return data still? according to the logic?
ok...I have the screen too small to see the values
turn off half duplex
42
@rapid hornet with the debugging you've done now...I'd say gpio matrix sounds right.
Are you sure your SPI init is actually setting the MISO pin?
What does idf stand for? (got โintermediate distribution frameworkโ from a google, which just doesnโt seem right?)
Ok, sorry.. been listening but not watching.
can your decode all the hardware registers that are setting the IO MUX ?
( I just noticed that constant 1 and 0 in - could you use that to force a read of 0xff and 0x00 ? )
Thank you
@rapid hornet Do you know what HSPI_HOST and VSPI_HOST are?
is it correct in config given to init
@rapid hornet d = mosi, q = miso....not sure if you know.
@rapid hornet spi_device_transmit....did you just pass in 'hal' to it? or a 2nd argument also? transaction config?
spi_transaction_t
transaction.flags = SPI_TRANS_USE_TXDATA | SPI_TRANS_USE_RXDATA;
I found this...it seems you don't set it...not sure if it's something you should set.
can you try a different set of pins?
What would a two sentence summary of what youโre trying to fix be?
It was worth a try!
I'm clearly not a professional then - sheesh!
@rapid hornet I've been looking at the way MP implemented it for ESP32...gave me some hints.
make sure that your hardware is connected to the matching pins for the example when complete.
Have you verified the peripheral works when connected to other hosts?
How do you decide whether it is spi 2 or 3
Oh, um you have DMA off right? Are you sure SPI3 supports DMA? I thought only SPI 0,1 have DMA? Or whatever numbering they use now...
@ornate coyote SPI3 supports DMA...I just read it on the datasheet ๐
I know on the "regular" ESP32, not all SPI supports DMA
Ok, cool, thanks @drifting arch
I'll stay out of this then ๐
quadhd, wp don't need to be set...
SPI3 supports 'standard spi', spi2 supports extra stuff...
Why do you assume it works?

@rapid hornet can you try gpio31 for MISO and gpio32 for MOSI...or did you already do that?
ok...maybe I read something wrong ๐
I mean, do you really REALLY need SPI support in CPY? Just remove it and move on ๐
is it Python tea or python t or pythonty ?
that is what a community is all about

@sleek temple You hang out in this channel before the show, and the link to join will be posted. If it says it's full, keep trying - as people finish, they will drop off. Show and Tell uses Streamyard, you can get to it through a browser. Have your cam, mic and project ready to go and you'll have a couple of minutes once called on to share.

Pre-covid, I've been seeing a lot of colorful signage being made with this side-emitting silicone LED strips.
Modern "neon" signs.
Cool hwite. Everything tastes better with cool hwite.
They are chunky, but the lighting is so beautifully diffused by that chonk.

@slow spire You and Big Clive with the warm white.... ๐
Holy moly, they're bright.
๐
those are very bright and fun
I was going to design an LED floodlight, but now, nevermind. LOL
@robust horizon Do you work much with these LED strips?
@waxen thistle not a huge amount, but it's fun to just write different code to show rainbows on 'em
Why is the HUZZAH32 so expensive?
I keep meaning to get a big lego plate, and make little lego mating blocks that the strip will clip into. So you can make whatever shape you want, within reason, by moving the blocks around
Now if I could find a decent quality, even-spread 850nm infrared flood light for security cameras -- not too strong, as many commercial models are just a giant hotspot that blows out the camera unless it's placed so far away to be useless.
(Nice! The LEDs are in stock. As is the accelerometer. Order in.)
@robust horizon That's a pretty great idea ๐
I was curious how many cycles a stencil survives. Some of the stuff in the factory footage looked pretty scratched up
@open girder ^ (stencil q)
@open girder compared to other ESP32 boards on amazon
Well that leads to "how do you make the stencils?"
Plans to make a feather with a TPS61023 / for neat and clean projects on alkaline battery packs?
@analog acorn lasers, I think
@wicked copper could also be features - like the Feather ESP32 has built in battery charging, etc. which requires more hardware
+1 for the buying from Adafruit vs from a cheap-from-china-at-discount.
So many beginners grab a "cheap" project kit that half works, and dissuades them from entering the hobby from frustration.
I need to control 135 LEDs. They are grouped anywhere from one LED to 27 LEDs. Putting 135 resistors into the circuit seems daunting, yet everything I read about multiple LEDs say one resistor for one LED. Is there any reasonable solution to this?
@plucky glen Are NeoPixel or DotStar LEDs or strips an option?
They come with built-in resistors and smarts.
No. Too expensive, and too hard to wire into the patterns required
And only one color is needed
@open girder yeah i'll use a cheap board that only connects to bluetooth, but use a HUZZAH32 for the main board for the featherwings
@plucky glen do you need to turn them on/off individually?
i love that clip
the chip on this thing runs a bunch of LEDs individually and does not have individual resistors so it can be done
You wont be able to look away from the mesmerizing patterns created by this Adafruit 15x7 CharliePlex LED Matrix Display FeatherWing.ย This 15x7 LED display can be paired with any of ...
@plucky glen charlieplexing maybe? with pwm
Personal story: I bought a cheap Arduino kit nearly 10 years ago from elsewhere, first time getting into the hobby. I was so frustrated that the pins weren't long enough for a motor plug, which sent me to adafruit for the first time since they had the extra long breakaway strips ๐
yah, like what jeffe just linked
No, they are in concentric circles, and we need to light one circle at a time. Each row will have a different PWM and therefore a different brightness. N-channel MOSFETs to control the LEDs.
@open girder yeah i'll use a cheap board that only connects to bluetooth, but use a HUZZAH32 for the main board for the featherwings
https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/030/994/original/31FL3731.pdf?1457554773 up to 144 LEDs from the 1 chip, wow
@plucky glen Check out this Adafruit guide for examples of wiring LEDs in parallel or serial with fewer resistors: https://learn.adafruit.com/lets-put-leds-in-things/from-scratch
yes, but wiring LEDs for row/column multiplexing means essentially 16x16, and to get a 50Hz refresh rate means each LED is on for 78us. This will make them very dim. But if I boost the current (taking advantage of the peak forward current rating) we are in a situation where I would have to exceed the 100ma max forward current to get anything resembling brightness. I did this in a more limited context 25 years ago, and I was pushing the limit on what the LEDs could do (controlling 9 7-segment displays from one decoder). I only had nine LEDs (in essence) and now I have 135. So the idea was to simply activate each circle, starting with the single LED in the center and moving outward to the 27 LEDs in the outer circle. The person who is doing this is not very good at soldering, so I'm giving him a wirewrap tool and wire.
You need them to be addressable, like an RGB matrix or strip?
No. Think of the problem as eight LEDs being activated in a pattern of brightness, think of it as a wave moving out from the center. I can do this with 4PWM pins, because I can make two rows run on one pin. They will be separated by three other rows. But the basic problem is still dealing with 135 resistors
Thanks @clear matrix for another awesome weekly look at everything CircuitPython!
Thank you @clear matrix! Excellent!
I would love a solution that used 8 resistors, one per row
yay! great job @clear matrix !
Thanks @open girder and good night. ๐
Thanks @open girder for another awesome evening of shows! And thanks @haughty quiver for hosting S&T!
Thanks and goodnight!
@plucky glen Would it be an option to use one large, power LED, and use PWM to change the brightness?
Thanks @clear matrix. Have a great week, all. Thanks!
thank you for a great show! and a great s&t by @haughty quiver !
@open girder My granddaughter and I thank you all!
Adafruit selling PPE has directly helped and protected me. Thank you for helping keep me from getting sick.
what I am doing is using PWM to control the brightness. It ramps up, then ramps down, according to PWM values in a table. Right now it has four steps. Tonight
[Latest epidemiological models do not look good right now.]
Masks are good. Physical distancing is good. Staying home if you can afford to, if you're able to....that's best.
Tonight's plan is to make an array of 8 LEDs and get the program working. Then, each MOSFET will control a different (but fixed) number of LEDs. The outer ring will have a resistor that can handle 5Vx27x25mA, dp I understand watts. That's not the problem. The problem is that I would like to use 8 resistors to limit the whole row.
Thanks and good night!
OK for real this time thanks and goodnight! And yes, please be safe.
