It's got a 1950s movie vibe.
@spring heath Here's a video about CovidSpeak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjfEzGz6cks
ATMakers.org is happy to work with CoughDrop.com and LessonPix.com to help support those who need to communicate while intubated due to COVID-19 and other issues. This video gives an overview of the goals and status of the open source project.
Welcome to Mask an Engineer.
Lol.
Ahhh those were the days, cleanroom suits.
Monster Mask 2.0 is going to be far different this year.
WooHoo! hi folks!

Question: How much does mask manufacturing cost to get started?
yay!

@waxen thistle at least $500k
that seems like a lot, but it's not, our PnPs were way more
Quality manufacturing equipment isn't cheap.
Would these be surgical or N95?
I imagine you'd have to hire some people to run it as well ๐
@waxen thistle "both" starting with surgical, and a parallel track for n95
will depending on funding, so we'll see
both are needed and will be need for a long time
I love the strap adjuster
Are you looking for grants & loans, or considering partnerships/investors for this specific project?
yep, yep, and yep
we can't (won't) use payroll funds for this
so we're willing to get loans, etc for it
NYC / NYS needs this, they may be able to assist, but we're all broke
so grants, loans (talked to our bank), and we'll fund raise on our site too, if this is possible, we'll make them

JOHN PARK'S WORKSHOP LIVE 4/23/20 Teletype CLUE Transmitter @adafruit @johnedgarpark #adafruit
anyone know a good way to send and recieve package between rpis?
imagine a tripler with stacking headers. infinite featherwingssss!
I've had to use that service before but I cannot recall it now
old-school text to speech
I think relay operator service?
It is amazing how much texting changed how deaf people can communicate
the lights are like reverse simon says
They don't happen to have an expander, version do they? A version that you can connect horizontally, thus making a doubler, tripler, quadrupler, penti-rupler (lol, a connected group of Feather "expanders" that u can have five feathers connected), 6 , 7, etc.
i don't believe it goes beyond four, but that is pretty much what it does
I was just listening -- and I thought JP said "Adventures of Salmon 8"..... ๐ค
lol
A MakeCode game with the cooperative feel of 2-player Portal
isn't that just fireboy and watergirl?
Salmon ate?
@next kayak Na, I don't mean set boards, but a board that connects like lego's.
With a nice balsamic glaze
Prahbably toona...
@ivory kiln that would be nice
sides of asparagus and jasmine lavender rice
how old are cherry mx keyboards?
I think Captain Crunch would be able to help with that ๐
GNURadio is good program to play with to do modulation/demodulation if you do not have the hardware
i'll keep that in mind
now chirper translator
twitter translate
I wonder how fast (wpm or characters per second) one can type on this TTY....
i'm surprised @haughty quiver struggled, while all companies that made this have to use the same code.
rip audioio
@haughty quiver There you go JP, board design idea to expand the Feather line capability's. Instead of just having the doubler, trippler or quadrupler Feather boards. Have a single expand board that would plug in horizontally with other ones, allowing a maker to connect 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6or more together that they could then plug in a verity of Feather boards onto each slot. or have a connector that would allow a maker to link a doubler with a tripler for instance.
@ivory kiln all you need is female headers, pcbs, and 90 degree headers
The data rate is 75 bits per second
?
@next kayak & that would allow someone to link a doubler with a tripper (for instance) allowing someone to plug 5 different Feather's into it?
no, but then you could make it a custom length, with all the features of a doubler or tripler.
i honestly thought jp's phone was ringing
O I'm talkingabout a product ieda for Adafruit to make for anyone to purchace, like buying a Feather or a tripler.
@haughty quiver 1 sttart bit two stop bits 5 bitts
Kinda works.
you could find a way to suggest it @ivory kiln
@next kayak That's why I linked that one message to JP, for him to read later & consider suggesting it to Limor if he likes the idea.
@haughty quiver Perhaps you'd get better results if you sent the audio through an actual phone handset.
if only she was on discord, you could let her know @ivory kiln
@haughty quiver See if you can find an old rotary headset that might make the input clearer if you use that as a speaker.
@next kayak I'm sure JP will if he thinks the idea could be beneficial.
he usually looks through the chat history, but when hee looks again, say it again
GNURadio runs python and you can export it, I really doubt it will run in circuitpython but maybe give some clues. Havne't tried that
For another interesting Teletype project, check out CuriousMarc's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XLZ4Z8LpEE
Some commenters requested that we use our restored vintage 1930 Model 15 Teletype as a terminal for Linux. Hooking up a 5-bit Baudot mechanical contraption to a modern OS, even one that is terminal friendly, is not without some challenges: adapting to the non-standard high vol...
I was using it for decoding satellite sound before, that once you demodulate it to audio frequencies worked well
Marc's terminal also uses Baudot so the two should be compatible.
THAT is cool @viral sail
Thanks @haughty quiver that was fun.
thank you @haughty quiver for a great show!
Great show. @haughty quiver
Good show @haughty quiver ๐

Same great price, but half the size!
and the wipes are Kimwipes: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008UB6IKC/
^ @cinder wind :]
Order MENDA/EasyBraid 35594 (16-1268-ND) at DigiKey. Check stock and pricing, view product specifications, and order online.
I had a cheaper pump but it failed after about 6 months. These have lasted 3 & 5 years, respectively
nice
Thank you @cinder wind
Mcmaster.com also has the Kimwipes (and IPA if, like me, you found it hard to come by)
the nice thing about Kimwipes vs paper towels is they're lint-free
was considering getting the quart of MG Chemicals IPA from mouser as it's unobtainium at regular stores
McMaster-Carr is the complete source for your plant with over 595,000 products. 98% of products ordered ship from stock and deliver same or next day.
Menda has an interesting assortment of bottles.
hahah love it
lol
that's adorable. I wonder when things go back to normal, if they'd make an adabot version?
if anyone is interested this is the serial hat I am using with the vt220 and it has the IR receiver on it. I am going to make an effort to document the configuration/setup to make the vt220 into remote controlled useful toy.

Excellent, thanks @radiant ridge
even at the max baud rate of 19200 the music visualizer (cava) has a little trouble keeping up sometimes.
So cool! That looks like a scene out of Electric Dreams!
at night, my whole room glows green with musical goodness ๐
@haughty quiver Ok, There you go JP, what do you think?
I see, so double rows of all the header pins on the outer edges so an IDC cable or similar can interconnect them?
No there would be right angle male & female headers (say male on the right & female on the left) so they could be joined. Plugged end to end allowing for 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 etc, Feathers to be connected at once.
@haughty quiver Customizability, one of my personal favorite things about being a maker. ๐ There is also an option of making a single board version as well, but with that same quantity customizability of connecting them side by side to create the length board they want to join what ever quantity of Feather's that a Maker wants for anyone particular project; & then pull them apart & use a different quantity for the next project.
I see, very cool
As well as of course also having the option of connecting them via IDC cable incase they need to have one group of Feather's in one location of their project & another group in another area.
Do you think that this design might be something that Limor & Phil might be interested in?
Best bet is to build a prototype and bring it on Show & Tell
there being the rub, I don't have the parts, nor cash to get the parts. ๐
You could build a PCB like that in Eagle or Kicad as a start.
Gotcha, ok. Pretty sure that at least one of those r free or free trail. I'll do that. ๐
eagle is free, and the easiest, imo
Are we unboxing today? Cause this little guy just showed up. ๐ฅณ

And that wasn't just a few dollars at the time, that's for sure.
where is the chat for this?
In the chats on the streams themselves -- youtube, twitch chat
oh, I see, thanks
He's using RestreamIO to consolidate the chat for his viewing, but it doesn't include Discord (yet)
@waxen thistle My first laptop had a 50mb hdd and it felt cavernous. powerbook 160c. Tech be cray cray.
Now I'm looking at desktops, seriously saying "nah, 16gb of ram isn't enough at all. I wouldn't say 32gb is good enough, I should consider 64 or even 128..."
And I remember when 128mb of ram was considered pretty solid.
all the ram thinking
128MB RAM (ca 1990)
I used to compile the Linux Kernel on 4 megabytes of RAM and a 386 DX processor, iirc.
Ran that machine without X11 (too slow to do that except as a demonstration, which it did run).
1024 MB (1 GB) still okay for a small GUI Linux.
(including running a 'frugal' DSL box, where everything is held only in RAM, no physical storage active during use)
This box I'm on right now is 3 GB and I've used it exclusively for the last 3 years.

I can get the stream split, and I can see chat and comments from YouTube & Twitch

Hi, any IoT geeks listening?
๐ Hello @waxen thistle !
[JP shows CPX overlay, covering his head and shoulders] JP is actually a giant CPX. We always knew that deep down.
Hey y'll, nearly missed this one
๐ต You've got the touch, you've got 5v power....yeah! ๐ต
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit

I'm officially disenchanted with Mixer.
Yeah, I just switched to YouTube.
There's a reason why JP is using it for MakeCode, as it's Microsoft's MakeCode + Microsoft's streaming service....
....but I'm still using Twitch + FrankerFaceZ plugin [the audio compressor feature is awesome]
Wait what? I missed how to get two CPX on screen
Hello, How big is this group?
At the moment, not very large
I have a member list that is huge?? Oh well.
@tight bridge We have a community of over 18,000 here in Discord, along with many others in the Adafruit Forums.
Activity varies from channel to channel, depending on the time of day and any activity that might be occurring.
Please keep in mind that due to Covid, a greater number of people appear to be online though not active, as they are most likely at home with discord open.
So maybe 10 people watching this??
16 on YouTube
At least 3 of us
I can't speak to the exact number, as it's on Twitch, Mixer, Youtube, as well as several other services. And all videos are recorded and uploaded to YouTube as Vods for those who can't catch it live.
Remember, this is 3pm eastern - 1pm pacific....the middle of the workday for most in the United States.
AHHHHHH!!!! Great. Thanks @haughty quiver
Makecode every day?
@haughty quiver Thanks! Hadn't played with IR communications prior to this. Easy peazy.
(One of those stuck at home, seeing discord chat but cannot watch due to work ๐ฆ )
Is transferring data between devices using sound would be interesting ?
Just started today and this notification popped up.
I'm passively listening to the show, but I can't follow along due to my attention being needed elsewhere. And that's fine -- we all do what we can ๐
Thanks @haughty quiver for another MakeCode Minute Hour!
@tight bridge This is a new show. Started Last Tuesday. JP also does a Thursday afterneeon show
Thanks @haughty quiver for the tutorial
Great show @haughty quiver. I work with young kids and we've started playing with a Circuit Playground Express during free time. The kids love it! Thanks for the ideas on lessons
That sounds terrific @deep basin glad to help
@haughty quiver , what is the difference between the Microsoft Makecode and Adafruit makecode. It seems to me the Adafruit makecode only support CPX and Microsoft makecode is everything but CPX?
BTW, great show, I just started with makecode in the last few day. Probably see you Thursday
@tight bridge Microsoft MakeCode is the overall platform, there are a few versions for specific microcontrollers, such as micro:bit and Adafruit Circuit Playground Express, as well as one for Minecraft, an 8-bit style game creation platform called MakeCode Arcade, and a few others.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!

Thanks for an awesome pair of shows @hard hollow and @rocky reef !
thanks folks!
yay thanks folks cya tonight
Actually, I do have an unrelated question for the two of you - @hard hollow & @rocky reef, do you still use that blackmagic 4k camera? I'm looking at it as a possible addition to my setup.
How do you feel about it after using for this time? Anything you'd do differently with it, knowing what you know now?
@waxen thistle we still love it and use it on every project video
there are always firmware updates so it feels like it will be support for a while
can't think of anything i would do differently besides only needing the 12-35 lens
the only other lens we use is the canon 100mm lens for macro shoots
I think that says everything, that you use it for every project video ๐
My current setup is a slightly aging Fuji X100T (with an even older Nikon D300 for photos, but prime glass is fine).
Since the BM 6k came out and dropped in price, it pushed the 4K model down even more. Which got me thinking it might be time for a refresh.
Any reason why the 7d beats out the BM 4k for timelapses?
oh wow i didn't realize the price dropped, it was already at a good price for the image quality you can get out of it
for timelapse i use a slower shutter speed that we can't do with the BM. plus they take a while so we can't have it tied up just doing timelapses
that's good to know about the BM
Yeah, the 6k is down to $2k and the 4k is down to $1.3k currently
Video is something I've avoided in the past -- mainly due to the learning curve, file size, and costs.
Well, awesome software like Resolve is cheap/free. Resources are plentiful for getting awesome results. And what would've been Hollywood quality a decade ago is off-the-shelf consumer today.
So I'm tiptoeing back into it
What do you use to drive the timelapses? Internal camera control or is it hooked to something else?
I think they made a homemade tabletop dolly as a project....let me see if I can find it
Anywho, thanks @rocky reef for letting me pick your brain ๐ I sincerely appreciate it.
anytime @waxen thistle !
@nova totem we use the octoprint plugin octolapse and a magnet switch to trigger the camera when it moves the printhead away
@rocky reef Cool was wondering how the printhead got removed. I've done some traditional time lapse before but have not yet tried on my new printer. Thanks
Is the share your project thing coming up?
@fallow fractal Show and Tell takes place at 7pm eastern (about 15 minutes from now), lasting until ~7:55pm eastern. A link to StreamYard will be posted, and please be aware it'll have a limited number of slots. As people finish showing their projects, they'll drop off the call -- opening up the slot for someone else. Please keep it to 2-3 minutes (unless otherwise told by PT or Ladyada).
ok
Is there any chance to get some help getting hooked up? Never done it before.
Last time I found out I couldn't use Safari
I believe there are instructions in the link when it gets posted. I personally haven't used it myself.
oh dear..
Per the website, it's compatible with Chrome and FireFox.
i'd use chrome if you can @fallow fractal have your mic and webcam hooked up ahead of time. when you click on the link to get into streamyard you'll be prompted with a preview of your webcam and you can test your mic in your browser. then there's a button to join the broadcast. when you enter you're put in a "green room". you won't be seen live but pt & ladyada will see you're on and will call on you to join. they take care of making sure your camera is being streamed out, etc. you'll just need to unmute your mic and share
also chances are the broadcast will be full for a bit at the beginning- if that happens wait until someone is done and try to join right after. by around 7:30 it gets easier
Got it, thanks. Looking to see if I have a mic of sorts now.
Thanks Liz for that ๐
I hadn't realized it was that popular.
it's a happening place
tip from my first time, remember to look at your camera not your screen and have little cheat notes about what you want to say, so you don't blank out and forget something (both of which I did)
Hahah! Writing cheat notes now!
yes, notes are great

thanks for sharing everyone!

nice job @fallow fractal !
yeah i've had this one since i was about 11 @muted mesa i actually looked them up on reverb/ebay and there are a ton floating around
Thanks!
that is a really awesome phone @fallow fractal
As someone who enjoys thrifting, yard sales, and flea markets...I'm having a severe case of "thriftdrawl". Thank goodness for ebay in times like this.
Oh thatnks!
i recommend reverb for your musical thrifting needs @waxen thistle
It hurt my head to build it
I just realized the yello bar means a comment was aimed at me.
Oh that site is nice.....Liz, why'd you do that? Now I won't want to pay attention during Ask an Engineer ๐
@split gazelle COuld you make the note clickers smart so they could run on some sort of bus? (Less wires)
@fallow fractal i am using two multiplexers (mcp23017's) over I2C so the only pins actually being used on the itsybitsy are SCL, SDA, 3V, USB and GND but for the solenoids they still need to be wired up to the drivers
the breadboard is a little messy but once they're on protoboards it won't look as scary (i hope). i've also got LED's hooked up right now for troubleshooting
@split gazelle I write a sketch that could play music with about 6 piszo electric things
It worked, but sounded horrible. ๐ฆ
i mean that's half the fun of noodling with synthy things ๐
@wanton dome so excited about your clicky trellis action!
@split gazelle love the solenoid xylophone project, so rad.
thanks @haughty quiver !
I can just imagine that playing into a massive reverb.

I'll be hosting a special edition of Show and Tell after John Park's Workshop today! Special because it's my first and it will almost certainly have issues. ๐
joesn't jp usually do that?
Yep! But the reason it started was so that there were multiple people who could host Show and Tell on Wednesday evenings in the event that PT and Ladyada were unavailable. I'm on the list, but haven't had a chance. Since there's already three Show and Tells during the week now with Noe and Pedro also hosting one, I didn't want to saturate it with a fourth. @nova totem During a week while I was away for Thanksgiving, a squirrel decided to stash cashews. Under my bed. In my spare shoes. He had to navigate a maze to get into the apartment the way he did, and there must've been around 5 lbs in my shoes.

@next ridge if you have answers for folks, I can read them off
catching up with the questions, 1 moment
one we had was whether you could dma to gpio
and whether the wifi conflicts with adc
and lots of time of flight questions
re. DMA: There is I2S peripheral which supports parallel input/output (unlike regular serial I2S). Can be used to drive displays and work with cameras.
we actually use I2S with cameras in ESP32, but now it is much more flexible (don't need to waste 32 bits per sample, can use 8 and 16 bit per sample)
ToF is in progress but unfortunately won't ship in IDF 4.2 as there are higher priority features on Wi-Fi side in progress... Will be part of IDF 4.3.
You can follow feature development progress in https://esp32.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=14532
Espressif ESP32 Official Forum
Re. Wi-Fi conflicts and ADC: there is now a hardware arbiter which allows using ADC2 and Wi-Fi at the same time... Wi-Fi still has priority, so you may get lower sample rate. But the driver will automatically retry sampling if Wi-Fi grabs priority.
So, the situation is better than with ESP32. Still not completely independent ADC2, though.
