@hoary stag there's also these WiFi-controlled AC switches that are ESP8266-based and you can put your own firmware on it (so you can trust it more). now @haughty quiver could add robotic things to it
a plant watering robot that follows you, THAT would be fun!
yeah
Needs some crossword puzzle -like clues.
what does the food sprite type do?
@next kayak Stockpiles pasta...
stockpiles washing hands and plant robot what follow you
Stainless screws are readily available.
@haughty quiver Shouldn't it play Happy Birthday?
the clap start is cool!
Couldn'y you run this on a Gizmo and speaker for better audio?
Audio to go out of sync in 3.. 2.. 1.. ๐
lol
That was a joke, @haughty quiver
looks fine here, JP
Audio seems to be in sync for me on Twitch
that was last week
Sorry. ๐
audio on Twitch is in sync.
but what about the video being upside-down? ๐
Not to be confused with N'Sync, but "We Want Audio That Way". ๐ต
@cinder wind You're lying on the floor...
John Park's Kung-Fu workshop - needs subtitles when out of sync
Lol.
anyone know how to download the adafruit emojis for iphone?
Last I remember there was a sticker pack for iMessage
Planes still flying in LA...
But I'll be honest, i don't text much -- let alone use stickers.
cool, thanks!
I don't often text, but when I do... ๐
hahaha, yeah -- I'm old fashioned. Plus, my thumbs aren't as nimble as I'd like. So I can be 100x better on a real keyboard versus a phone on-screen keyboard.
But as long as the message gets across and everyone's happy, do what works for you โ๏ธ
@haughty quiver , you should use hand sanitiser for the demo live! haha
That is one nice handwasher timer. Great idea!
Very nifty indeed ๐
I might try to make a pybadge version of the timer.
Big Clive showed us how to make hand sanitizer from vodka.
Bye
Thanks, @haughty quiver ๐
Thank you, @haughty quiver . Excellent workshop today.
Thanks John - another fine show
Thanks very much
Thank you @haughty quiver for another awesome show!
See ya! thanks @haughty quiver !
LOL hi @cinder wind
legs to Chancey
@haughty quiver you have somany possiblities for it
like have eye using hallowing
maybe you should collaborate with the ruiz bros on a new one.
you could use the screen on the clue for an eye!
@haughty quiver I had an idea while washing my hands: For the CLUE version you could probably use the gesture sensor to start the timer, and then show the step my step instructional images in time with the countdown
good idea!
@wanton dome that's a terrific idea.
sound also for reminder
I think I'll use the proximity rather than the actual "gesture" thing though, for simplicity.
ya, for sure
do you know if we can play .wav file on CLUE @wanton dome?
if you have robot watching from shoulder it could use sound
you should hear the sound of the faucet being turned on for the trigger
also proximity if you use it
@haughty quiver i believe the clue library sets up the sound.
I see that it has methods for noise detection but I don't see any sound helpers... ๐
@haughty quiver maybe try the code in here?:
https://learn.adafruit.com/the-scream-munch-screaming-interactive-scream-painting/code-with-circuitpython
nm, I'll try
@haughty quiver final answer yes-ish:
import board
import audiocore
import audiopwmio
import digitalio
# Required for CircuitPlayground Express (uncomment, not tested)
#speaker_enable = digitalio.DigitalInOut(board.SPEAKER_ENABLE)
#speaker_enable.switch_to_output(value=True)
data = open("scream_low.wav", "rb")
wav = audiocore.WaveFile(data)
a = audiopwmio.PWMAudioOut(board.SPEAKER)
print("playing")
a.play(wav)
while a.playing:
pass
print("stopped")
sounds about as good as those noisy birthday cards
Oh, is that for Circuit Playground Express? I was asking about it for CLUE.
I think you'd need a feather/metro m4 's DAC for not-horrible sound
am i right for thinking there is about to be another live stream?

@rapid hornet @clear matrix what equipment do you use for discord audio and streamyard video chats?
@cyan holly I have a blue yeti mic with over the ear headphones. video camera is a c920
I know this wasn't directed at me, but I personally use the following:
Mic: AT2020usb microphone. Though this one might have issues on Win10 (I use mac).
Headphones: I'm using an older Audio Technia headset, open back. But any earbuds or headphones work nicely.
I do have an elgato key light as well for video
@cyan holly C922 and a Blue Yeti Pro connected to a Focusrite Scarlett here. C922 and an AT4040 connected to a Focusrite Scarlett in the US.
Thanks
@rapid hornet What do you think of the elgato key light?
[let me know after the meeting, I had to drop early for a work concall]
@cyan holly I had a terrible experience with Blue, so I've moved away from them, but that's me. Plenty of people find them fine. I used to use a Blue Yeti Nano, but that's the one I had a terrible experience with. The AT2020 is significantly less expensive than the 4040 and is evidently excellent. Still requires an audio interface though.
@waxen thistle its a bit pricey but it does improve my appearance on video calls a bunch
overhead light just doesn't look very good
Thanks ๐ Do you use a dual light setup or a single?
I just have one in front of me
Thanks. I've not been able to find a USB C audio jack adapter that works well on my Pixel 2 phone. So I am going to try to start using laptop for audio calls.
So I'll try one of these USB mics
@clear matrix Have you compared the AT4040 vs the AT2020? What helped you make the decision to get the 4040?
I'm thinking of going with an XLR setup with a computer I'm planning on building....with a GoXLR to manage the audio interface.
Couple of things. My budget was one - I had the budget for it. I was told the AT2020 would be a great choice as well. The AT4040 comes with a shock mount as well, which you'd have to get with the 2020, so while the 4040 is more expensive, counting that in brings the difference down a bit. You'll also need a cable and a pop filter (there's a cheap one on Amazon that was recommended to me and works great). I really like it a lot. I did not compare the two in any meaningful way though.
@waxen thistle ^^
Thanks ๐ With mojave, the AT2020usb version is holding up well -- but as soon as I go Win10 or Catalina, I am told to expect headaches. So I'm kinda kicking myself not grabbing something last holiday season when they were on sale, but that gives me time to make a better decision ๐
Ah fair enough.
And my old 2013 MBPr is showing signs of needing replacement. So....grumble. Now's not the time to invest in new hardware....
Thank you @clear matrix for your thoughts -- I trust someone who uses it a whole lot more than a review site ๐
@waxen thistle My advice in making my purchases came from EQ I already had been using, and advice from John Park and CGrover (who also confirmed my thoughts on the rest of the setup).
I use an AT2020Usb and it works well with Windows 10. I've had it for about 2 years and no problems at all. I stream on Twitch, I use to do a weekly gaming show, and never had an issue using with Xsplit or anything else. For a headset I use a Razor Blackshark.
That's awesome @halcyon linden --- I've heard otherwise from other streamers, which is why I mentioned as such above. That's good the drivers were updated/system stabilized to handle it. ๐
I opted for a Plantronics HW261N headset and a Zoomswitch ZMS-10C USB interface.
I've little confusions can someone tells me about these?
10 feed meaning?
5 dashboards meaning?

very "cool"
really smart idea re: temp monitor. GF and I were just discussing whether we should be checking ourselves for fever. i like the idea of just keeping it on overnight
"Body" temperatures vary by body location but as long as you're consistent about the location and have a basal readings, it's useful.
IMO fever is really obvious when you have it; but it'd be very useful for anyone who can't communicate that they feel feverish - at least that was my experience with the flu + pneumonia I got in Nov.
@heavy ginkgo It'll be possibly useful for young children or babies as well
i.e people that can't communicate that they feel feverish ๐
Evening peeps.

Devilish question: if you can't get it from digikey either, where? ๐ (trying to get lipo batteries in the UK from adafruit... not easy even when it's not a pandemic)

@clear matrix np i can wait til next week ๐
@lean quiver good to see you again ๐
@gaunt plumeu you can use two 1x9 sockets since the DIP 18 is hard to find (besides digikey) with that row spacing. or just solder directly to a MDBT42Q Espruino breakout ๐
they'll probably move pretty quickly towards the end, you might be able to get on

@gaunt plumeu no particular reason, any arduino-compatible with enough pins will work fine. i just like that one (MDBT42Q) in particular because it's almost the exact same size as the display ๐
yeah I have the same problem @lean quiver
i think you need 14 GPIO pins to run it

Same here, I'm having trouble remembering what day of the week it is.
i did not realize how exhausted i was until i hit the broadcast button, oof
words are hard
haha
It's Wednesday, so this must be Belgium.
If you're every out on medical leave for an extended period of time, it's so easy to lose track of days -- one trick I've learned the hard way is to make plans on specific days. It gives you something to look forward to.
I don't lose track of days! it's friday! ๐
Is it still possible to join the show and tell Livestream?
@tough flame You missed it.
Oh. Okay.
Ah... my bad, George!
It was an hour ago. ๐ฆ
yah, i have to wear masks now all the time so no more beard for me
stays inside, for his beard's sake
Hopefully next week I make show and tell?
I think i touch my face too much with a beard...
"Yeah, I'm bearding it up over here." - Brian Griffin.
Yup - I work in electric power, so lot's of talk about shaving for face masks here too!
The pendants are so great @lime falcon
@lament flume Who's beard are you touching you face with? ๐
If we all have to shave our heads and eyebrows, things are gonna get weird.
๐
Hi, all!
There's literally no masks anywhere to be found -- since mid-January. I was going to home improvement stores throughout NJ, and only occasionally you could find a chemical respirator. Absolutely zero n95 particle masks. ๐
So glad you are doing 'ask an engineer' tonight. Any bits of normalcy these days is much appreciated!

Mask is a really nice idea, well done
I dunno if I'd call it PPE, though. I think MOPP-3 masks will work, though.
haha. MOPP. so much fun.
Yeah. MOPP-4 was delightful in Iraq, so I hear.

Q: recommendations for good ways to learn FPGA programming and technology?
I have a TSL2591 High Dynamic Range Digital Light Sensor that I am using for light monitoring. It's running on a Raspberry Pi 3b. It takes the reading every 1 minute and outputs to CSV. Sometimes the script fails with an error message. The error is, "overflow reading light channels." The script is written in Python. Any suggestions?
The bobbins of wire looked like TP.
@analog acorn I used Icebreaker to have a go on an FPGA and it had good teaching materials
@open girder
@ivory kiln Also, what kind of plastic sheeting is good for these face shields?
@analog acorn my icebreaker came today too!
Thanks for still doing the show.
I think @rocky reef recommended ink jet transparency sheets. @ivory kiln
Good question @analog acorn -- I was quietly wondering the same, thanks for the suggestion of the icebreaker @rapid hornet and @solemn spear ๐
@open girder Any plans to add threading to circuit python?

@analog acorn the icebreaker channel on the 1bitsquared is good too

is there any way to simulate a trellis in make code? I have an idea for a game - but lack the hardware
Can you have the uf2 bootloader and upload using Arduino at the same time? Or does the uf2 bootloader replace the Arduino bootloader? I like the option of being able to use my board as a mass storage device, but donโt want to switch completely to CircuitPython (for this particular application) due to space and power consumption concerns.

hahahahahaha apocalypse beard!
Actually a bad idea to grow a beard at this point. Harder to resist touching face and less seal for a mask if you wear one
Beard Energy?
Internal cutouts can be kinda tricky. If you're interested, OSHPark has some tips: https://docs.oshpark.com/submitting-orders/legacy-slots/
I'll keep my beard, as it's impossible to find any masks -- and universal balance is essential ๐
The beard balance is indeed a thing. I had to grow one to offset hair loss elsewhere.
no echo
Lost everything up top many many years ago, not by choice. Nice part is if I ever do shave, I'll look 10 years younger.

anyone know some cool pybadge tricks?
@next kayak lots of cool features in the PyBadger library.
is there a way to visualise a badge layout in a browser?
Haven't gone there yet. Still working on a PyBadge/Gamer -based robotics library in CircuitPython.
@inner spade when i tried to connect a server, it said that all timers for the pin were busy on the pybadge
Could be a library conflict -- something allocating a pin for another purpose.
ill try it using just the servo library, thanks for the help!
The PyBadger library ties up some pins. I ran into allocation issues when trying to layer PyBadger with the Crickit library.
ok, thanks for the heads up. i'm logging off, but if you want to chat further, i'll probably be on discord during the next john park's workshop, and my github is BlueWolf220

Here's a tip I heard from a medical professional -- when sewing masks, make the "inside" a different color/design than the "outside" -- so they don't mix up the inside/outside when putting it back on.
[if this was discussed, apologies. I'm typing blind as I can't have the livestream up at the moment.]
@waxen thistle That's good advice.
very good idea
Interactive Map for Mask needs https://getusppe.org/give/
My old company (3M - maker of respirators and other PPE) required a complete physical before you could get authorized to use ANY respirator which includes the N95/dust mask. They wanted to make sure the reduced airflow wasn't going to create bigger issues.
SO, my point is don't make it TOO airflow restricive.
for allergicperson airflow is more important
