The Borg called. They left a message....something about the resistors are futile?? Didn't really hear them well, sounded like 1,000,000,000 voices all talking at once.
@waxen thistle Lol.
OMG I gotta go get some lightbulbs now
It's a lightbulb moment.
Andy.
Very bright idea diffusing the bulb that way.
(My own dad jokes coming up no doubt.)
Bright idea! darn it
Ah, gee, be nice.
๐
Thanks @waxen thistle I realized at the last moment that the reflected light color was a lot easier to see on video.
Thankfully, you moved at the speed of light to implement that solution.
Using that piece of paper works around the difficulty of videoing LEDs.
It was an illuminating demonstration.
Good lesson for all in Show and Tell.
Limor does this often, too, using the white table top and aiming her NeoPixels down at it.
can you post a link to the mimxrt dev kit?
๐ at Limor!
Ha! Scott just said "Phil and I..." and I was like "huh?" and looked up from my REPL....
And CircuitPython is used in such very interesting, amazingly beneficial ways that change the world for the better.
So the work the community does to CircuitPython -- from the lead devs to a community member submitting a single bug report...it makes a sincere difference, making the world a better place.
And isn't that the ultimate goal for any software developer? To write code that makes a difference? I'd hope so.
Ok, I want that SigFox FeatherWing
Just a last-minute SigFox FeatherWing. NBD.
Ok, I also want a XBee featherwing..
This new live chat system seems to be more reliable than the old system,๐ but I do miss the row of participants across the bottom.๐
LORA
And X-Bee. Just casually threw that together, too. ๐
@fossil musk I don't. The thumbnails tended to obscure people's demos.
Pokemon Featherwing: I choose YOU, M4 Express!
@gaunt plume lol. the documentation for both the featherwings are available on hackaday.io. I am working on adding all info to my submission

@sage aspen Cool.
I will add the documentation soon. I was troubleshooting some issues

@ashen hound Are you going to make a XBee/SigFox CircuitPython library..?
For the XBee one, yes! The sigfox can be controlled via UART
But I can write a UART wrapper for the module

Hi, @dim knot ! Break a leg tonight! This is going to be a workout for you I'm sure.
Every Wednesday I get a 30 minute warning and a starting now message, but never for Ask an engineer. Anyone know why that might be?
There are still some M3 screws sitting somewhere in the USPS system from months ago....I'll probably get them in 12 years. ๐ญ
hi, is this a good place to ask questions about adafruit products?
Someday, @proper trench, I'd love to hear about your experience not carrying a cellphone, if you'd like to share.
Me too.
I never carry my cellphone around with me.
I mean, should I get rid of mine, too? Sometimes I think yes.
That's a nuisance. I often have to ignore S&T (live), since that's still during work hours out here on the left coast.
@slow shadow Yep -- there'll be a period for questions and answers at the end of the live broadcast specifically -- but feel free to ask anytime. We might redirect you to the other channels here, to the forums at forums.adafruit.com, or to support@adafruit.com depending on the question ๐
@slow spire me too about the cell phone. I already have an irregular heartbeat but, when I heard sge doesn't use a cell phone my skipped even worse.
evening all you wonderful people! ๐
@fossil musk It's half past midnight where I am. ๐ค
@fossil musk I mark my questions here with @open girder Question: [blah blah blah]. Sometimes I watch the reply later on the archived YouTube video.
@fossil musk I agree. I don't know why they would have such a weird policy
It's always midnight somewhere.
@waxen thistle thank you: I'm just looking for some specs on product id # 3875, 5V electromagnet 25kg holding force - how many turns are in the coil of the solenoid, and what kind of soft magnetic material forms the core?
Youtube have a number of weird policies.
@slow shadow That'd be a great question to ask near the end of the show. Take a look at @slow spire's suggestion on how to format the question for best visibility ๐
For anyone that have NeoPixel Rings - 12 x 5050 RGBW LEDs , Adafruit ItsyBitsy nRF52840 Express - Bluetooth LE PRODUCT ID: 4481, & CR2032 coin cells here are the STL files for the earring case:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4092206
i sent the makecode arcade link to a couple of my friends who have young ones and they're starting to have fun with it ๐
It might get punted to the forums or support if they can't answer it on the fly, but it's all meant for the best.
Yep, @waxen thistle @slow shadow, since there's no datasheet currently on adafru.it/3875, the best place to ask that question is at https://forums.adafruit.com.
@split gazelle ๐
@waxen thistle how long does the show typically run?
@slow spire thanks, I posted there but haven't gotten a response there...was hoping someone could answer it in this discussion
@slow shadow Typically around 90 minutes, give or take.
@open girder Question: I'm just looking for some specs on product id # 3875, 5V electromagnet 25kg holding force - how many turns are in the coil of the solenoid, and what kind of soft magnetic material forms the core?
@slow spire thank you, I'll check back in near the end!
@open girder question for later: I've learned a lot of stuff as I've been working on my projects but I'm realizing I have gaps in my "basic electronics" knowledge that I'd like to fill. Do y'all have a good basic electronics/EE text/book/resources to recommend? (Like maybe at the level of what a college 100-level EE course would cover?)
โฑ๏ธ ๐ฎ @haughty quiver's MakeCode Arcade Minute was 2min 35sec of excellent pixel editing and using the tile map to find buried treasure! Ahoy mateys! ๐ฎ โฑ๏ธ
Makecode Maxi Minute. ๐
@split gazelle I've done very similar with MakeCode and a CPX. "But I don't want to solder." BAM, here ya go! "But I don't know how to code." BAM, here ya go! Here's a link to the guide....
A week later -- I touch base after they get to play around with it on their own....nothing but smiles.
@slow shadow They usually end around 9pm eastern, so the Q&A is near the end of it.
@slow shadow Answers should pick up as people get back from their holiday vacations.
JP's Makecode Minute -- never a minute long, you always get more than you pay for! You get a minute, you get a minute, EVERYONE gets a minute!
@waxen thistle Lol.
@slow shadow When those kinds of stats aren't available, often I end up buying the part anyway, and doing my own testing.
Speaking of USB-C --- I have a frustrating problem. I can't seem to find USB-C hubs. I don't mean converter hubs....I mean a USB-C -> multiple USB-C ports. Any ideas or suggestions?
The only one I've seen was on a monitor.
If Anker doesn't have it...it doesn't exist? ๐
@slow spire thanks, i'm at that point myself (2 of these magnets on my desk rn) but I would like to simulate their fields as well and show good agreement between my model and my experiment
@wanton dome Link?
high speed usb!
Is it just me, or has there been a huge leap forward in chip performance over the past six to 12 months?
@waxen thistle I'd search USB C Dock.
@slow spire I've done that, and sadly...most of the items I find are converter hubs that are a bunch of legacy ports and maybe 1-2 ports...usually 1 high speed/power, 1 USB 2.0 style.
(And we're kind of ahead of the game wanting those. I remember looking for a 4 or 6 port USB charging port years ago and people thinking I was crazy. Now it's in everybody's luggage.)
@wanton dome $3.88 in quantity 1?!? ๐ฎ
They'll happen eventually -- but since everything is going to USB-C....eventually we'll need more USB-C ports ๐
@stone silo @waxen thistle or $1.76 in ladyada quantities:
https://octopart.com/search?currency=USD&q=MIMXRT1011DAE5A
@wanton dome Thanks ๐
First off I love what ya'll are doing here! I have an interesting project idea and I'm not sure if it is feasible. My significant other is passionate about plants. I however am not. She is a night shift nurse and as such can't remember to water her plants on a regular basis.
IDEA: Feather M4 stacked with wifi wing and Eink display. Once every 30 mins or so it would measure temp and moisture of the soil with the capacitive sensor. Update the display and post a message to a time based DB or MQTT for display on a locally hosted grafana. In addition if it senses values out of tolerance maybe even send and SMS.
I have not used any feather products before but i am fairly good at python.
CircuitPython is a joy. Period.

I didn't even look at the family to see if there are other skus; may be something cheaper
That's a lovely orange.
@wanton dome it's really wild, in a good way, the world we live in now. Such amazing tech is so available and affordable now!
....that snowglobe was awesome.
@dim wigeon not more than an year or so ago @rapid hornet pointed out that you can get SAMD21's for the same price range as an ATiny85
@past moon I'd check out this project on the Adafruit Learning System for a start.
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-stemma-soil-sensor-i2c-capacitive-moisture-sensor
Banned from CES? What?
Who knew?
@slow spire I have looked over that project and its what inspired my idea. I figured it would be "cooler" to have a display and export its data visible over the internet
I'd look at, and build, separate eInk/ePaper, and Wi-Fi (maybe PyPortal or AdafruitIO) projects as well.
Then work on integrating the various parts.
@wanton dome the low end SAMD21s, in unit quantity, are only about twice as expensive as a 555 timer in unit quantity. ๐
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Good point. I was just thinking of space impact wrt the hardware footprint.
A HUNDRED BUCKS!
@past moon Whatever size you make it, it will likely be smaller than a flower pot.
My practice is often to work with larger parts for first versions, anyway. Easier to solder and build.
@dim wigeon pretty sure things like 555s and tiny85s have arrived at the "just pay us $0.01 and the cost of shipping/logistics" point in their lifecycle
aka the floor
Yup.
@wanton dome ๐
โBut wait, order now and we'll send you a second 555 for the same price. Just pay shipping and handling.โ

Always. Be. Closing.

Poor @dim knot ! So much work tonight! So. Many. Products.
@muted mesa I think I heard that quote attributed to Esther Dyson at one point.
Do they have a Stemma QT plug expanded? Plug it into a single plug like that & it would give you 2 or five Stemma QT plugs to work with. Or is that even possible with that type of system?
huh. looks like Grace Hopper is also attributed to the same quote. interesting. we should have a standard for citations...
@ivory kiln no, not yet. There is a grove thing that is similar
@wanton dome Ain't that the truth...
but not qt
@ivory kiln I believe that Sparkfun has something like that
it's @waxen thistle possible
Ok, thanks @wanton dome & @waxen thistle ๐
np, here to help
@ivory kiln I found expanders that are shields for arduino or RPi.
I've hacked together some with feather and shield protos
@ivory kiln You could probably make this work:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/4462
That might work...
Do you think college is worth it?
Depends on what it is.
@maiden tangle and depends on what you put into it
Speaking of standards, the micro:bit too feather converter ๐
@maiden tangle It makes certain things easier, and it opens a lot of doors that might normally be closed....or squeakily shut. You usually get out of it what you put into it.
That looks spot on @waxen thistle
@ivory kiln I don't think that's quite going to be plug and play because it's expanding the address space
Though I'm surprised they didn't make it a good deal smaller.
I'm surprised they don't round their corners but hey, different strokes
I'd be willing to bet @sage aspen is already hard at work on the mini pi display
I'm sure there is a reason. Probably makes the PCBs a bit less expensive
O' @wanton dome I though that, that's what that chip on there was doing. kind of like a USB port expander
I just order the new display, but the RGB_Display driver should work on it already.
Any recommendations for learning bluetooth data exchange for something like a smart watch?
Question .. still plan on adding new M5STACK products? They have a new โAtomโ product... curious on the interest / opinion on carrying it
Do you plan on having enough Ciruit playground bluefruits available in the near future to have enough for a class set?
Ooo!
Like enough in stock to purchase a class set
@ivory kiln I can't comment if that board is a good fit --- but I thought I saw something along the way. Check out Sparkfun's Qwiic offerings --- they're a great compliment to the adafruit stuff.
Q: Is there anywhere I could find a Stemma to Stemma QT adapter?

I know why I like vim but not why emacs people like emacs
vim user asks "why emacs". the irony... ๐
@wanton dome Not to start anything, but I say the opposite.. why would anyone willingly use vi
I use Atom. I'm definitely more of a GUI guy. (Coding for decades and haven't touched emacs, yet.)
Microsoft Word ๐ ๐ ๐
@muted mesa well I already know the RIGHT editor
boy I have no clue.... I have been using Notepad++

I'm trying to remember when I started using Emacs
@finite solstice That's great, especially if you wind up on a desert island with no emacs.
Late 80s likely
@odd stream if you're asking in the spirit I was, I like how it makes automating repetitive tasks easy, as well as editing text blockwise
I think that old RadioShack phone actually has a little neon bulb for the ring!
I can say the same about emacs
honestly though I use VS Code more often these days
@wanton dome I tried that once.
Congratulations, Fernando from Tennessee...
I started using VS Code when working with Google's Flutter framework.
I'm pretty sure the answer for us both is "because I know how to use it well"
VSC is def faster than Atom. i use both though... (Azure integration is nice, in VSC)
I've used a ton of editors/IDEs.
@finite solstice That's a good one, I remember using that in college quite a bit. Try a bunch of the freebies first -- like VScode, atom, emacs, vim. Then try trials of pro-tier paid offerings like Sublime. I mean, do a few projects in each....and see what works best for you.
@slow spire I used several IDEs when I was using Java
Mostly because that was used by the teams I joined

@finite solstice emacs and vim are the old standby offerings that have been here for ages. Atom is one of the more recent batch of highly customizable editors that's multiplatform. The new hot one on the scene is VS code, and it's really rather sweet with a large following. And everyone as you can tell is very passionate about which one they prefer ๐
Night, @lavish patrol !
๐ฅฑ
agreed
One of my favorite parts about VS Code that's specific to my work is how it handles working in multiple directories and code bases at the same time
@waxen thistle @finite solstice Atom is my daily driver, but I try to stay flexible as a generalist, so I can work with various clients/coworkers who have a preference.
@slow spire that's a good approach.
There's no "wrong" option ๐ And a lot of awesome ones to choose from, with a ton of overlap.
So many good editors to choose from!
@waxen thistle I actually have VScode installed on my home pc. Still need to learn more about using it though.
Knowing a bit of multiple languages, platforms, IDEs makes one more valuable.
brb
@finite solstice I'll hit up YouTube to learn about something like a new IDE.
The more you know! ๐
I'm still learning new things about vim and vscode on a regular basis. It usually starts with "I wonder if I can ..."

2020 John Park sets fire to his workshop. ๐
Hello @dense marlin !
Pro-tip of the day: don't set your workshop on fire. Remember to always have an ABC fire extinguisher within arm's reach at all times -- and verify the pressure in it is good every so often.
@waxen thistle That's good advice.
And when I say within arm's reach -- not obstructed by anything, not behind the workbench. Nothing should ever be in the path between you and the extinguisher. [in case the fire is on the bench, it shouldn't be on a shelf behind the bench]
As Alton Brown (of Good Eats) says -- a fire extinguisher is the only 'unitasker' that he owns, and happily hopes he never uses.
๐
But it's a combination fire extinguisher and cigarette lighter. With Bluetooth

I love how much work Microsoft puts into Make arcade
The video capture software doesn't do that well with video (MakeCode arcade, etc). But the rest of the broadcast is on point.
wait, so I think I missed something. The CP is acting as a BLE central to control a standard BLE bulb? awesome
Having CircuitPython be not just a BLE peripheral is wonderful
So, I guess you could make cool white by turning on the warm white and adding some blue.
@haughty quiver Thanks for an awesome show with an excellent explanation.
These deep dives are pretty nice.
I saw a chart in an old book on how to mix fluorescent tubes to achieve different color temperatures, so mixing warm white + blue would be the same sort of approach
Thanks @haughty quiver! A very helpful explanation.

Another great workshop, @haughty quiver.
Thanks for the show. I have to find my CPB again.
yeah this potentially means BLE peripherals like keyboard & mouse hooking up to CircuitPython

Frobbing! New to me and awesome.

Iโm with you. Turning knobs is fun enough to empty my wallet on physical synth modules when VCV Rack does the same things for free.
@haughty quiver I agree
on both, fun and empty pockets through modular synth
but I made never so much music then before
So happy frobbing everyone
Is it Wednesday yet?!?! Can't wait to see @hard hollow and @rocky reef 's 3d printing of some infinity cubes and stuff!
I've been working on my 11in^3 infinity cube for like 6 months. 360 neopixels of twinkling infinity. ๐ So close to finishing it, but the outer frame is giving me trouble.. I used wood and I'm no where as accurate as 3d printing.
@paper schooner Hello fellow wood maker! I am getting used to some more CADy stuff but wood and a penciled diagram is still my go to.
@earnest cipher I'm not sure I qualify as a wood maker. This was an early project with a lot of failures and redos along the way. Technically this is infinity cube v3 ๐
We all have that one project ๐
three cubes and over six months later ๐ I am so close to finishing it
I had my hovercrafts
sweet!
Getting that air distribution right took about 30 tries
I can inagine.. but that feeling when you got it right.. it's like no other
Heh, found a pile of cheap leafblowers (just the blower mechs) brand new on eBay so I bought 'em with the notion of making something like that.
Cat is dubious about my plans
"You're going to use these to make a lot of noise, aren't you?"
Actually those four blowers might be just about right for a cat-scale hovercraft.
If you want any help or cad resources, let me know
Thanks!

To quote Jed Clampett (of The Beverly Hillbillies): "A smidgen is just a teensy little bit, just like that. 3 smidgens makes one pinch. 4 pinches equals one little bit. 4 little bits equals one middlin' amount. 3 middlin' amounts equals one right smart and it takes 5 right smarts to make a whole heap."

@rocky reef Well, you inspired me to fix my 3D printer that's been broken for months. I had one of those print failures where you end up with a snarl of plastic and it's all packed in around the extruder. I tried to clean it out and broke the fan nozzle. But then I watched this morning and thought, "I should fix that." Dusted it off, downloaded the part STL files from Prusa, and printed a new part. Woohoo! Now off to Thingiverse.

I have an AaE question!!! What material should I use for 3D printing things that come in contact with food? Like a Cookie Cutter? I see people claiming food safe but not real sure who to believe.
@strong sky Most filament printing is not going to be food-safe. The textured layer lines prevent cleaning. Also your nozzles and such aren't perfectly clean.
@strong sky, you may feel safest using PLA, since it is usually made from plant-based resources such as corn starch.
I know... but when I see people that selling 3D printed cookie cutters that claim to be FDA approved materials, I do not know what material they would be using.
Some things I read say PLA is not safe, others say it is. Just seeing what Adafruit thinks. Maybe they have a staff member that has experience with it.
I have an AeE question too: What is the best film to use for an infinity mirror? I have an acrylic sheet cut to the right size (13" round), but I need to get film for the two way mirror side. There are so many options out there, I have no idea what I should get. There will be DotStars inside.

Excellent-looking build. Like the switch array board.
Wago connectors are seriously awesome -- electrical-industry respected.
I must look into these Wago connectors. ๐ค
Check the specs to be sure -- the ones I have can..and are..used for mains power. Much more expensive than a wire nut though.
But they're pretty much lever-action wire nuts that can connect 2-5 wires together at once. [depending on the connector you use]
Neat.
BLE keyboard to mac
And they have insertion points built into the connector -- so you can use a multimeter probe without needing to disconnect anything.

Can you tell I like'em? ๐

So when will CircuitPython support BLE UART for wireless print() and REPL while debugging BLE HID et al? ๐ ๐

cool, can send passwords via bluetooth ๐ฉ
have you used digital rotary encoder IC what could detect with ir added to it
or that rotary encoder detect distance
@dense marlin, it's acting the same as a wireless keyboard (which a lot of people use). It's encrypted, so sending passwords via Bluetooth is pretty secure
Yes, but I have to put it on the bluetooth device in code in clear text, no?
you can pair it normally the code detect device what it look for
@dense marlin yes and that's the real security problem, having someone plug in a CircuitPython board and reading all the code
@haughty quiver Thanks for another awesome show! Hope y'all have a nice one!
"Encrypted" is only valid for peer-reviewed algorithms. Vendors often say "encrypted!" when they're doing something like obfuscating with a 40-bit key....

I started with some code for a new board and then did Show and Tell, about 6 years ago. I'm working for Adafruit now. One can go a long way by honing your skills and showing them and sharing.
Having done video presentations, those 2-5 minutes are important to the presenters!

YT lags most of time
Twitch has a 0.80sec delay [updated] to broadcaster for me. That's pretty rad.

just gave one to my nephew for his 13th birthday ๐ he's starting to tinker and learn to code
@waxen thistle My go-to is currently the PyBadge if I need a display and the CPX if not.
@split gazelle And it's one of the few boards that's generally safe for all/most-ages. No soldering, no breadboarding, etc. And then woooo, Crickit.
yes! exactly. he can just rock makecode and have access to all the sensors and then build on that
Crickit!
Haha ๐
@dim wigeon Agreed -- the plethora of boards with a built-in display now is so nice. Hallowing, PyBadge, various PyPortals, PyGamer, etc.
low key want to make my own after seeing that demo

@split gazelle Makecode is something I'd never, ever think Microsoft would make back in the late 2000s. I'm beyond happy of the direction they're taking.

CPB is really something special

add a TFT gizmo and you got a stew goin'
Macros on a bluefruit!
Huh? I just got a "watch your language" and I posted about was using CPB & CPX for prototyping.
It's flippin' good!
haha
@leaden trail it was cause' of "dam*ed"
Trashpanda gets an upgrade
@leaden trail Yep, it's weird. Last week I got told off for saying another word for cat.

no big deal, darn useful works
Love my Circuit Python Bluefruit & express. Prototype code and connections, get it working. Then move to smaller feathers or even teensie.
โฑ๏ธ @haughty quiver's MakeCode Minute was 2min15sec of refreshing Sprite manipulation โฑ๏ธ
@open girder ya can get NightBot to setup timed chats in the twitch and youtube chats. It can also moderate them;
Work day is done, I'll catch up with the rest of the show later.

Zac looks like Clark Kent.
I'm not sure if I like the REPL or CIRCUITPY drive more. I can't imagine going back to not having them both
OOH! FFT in CircuitPython. That should come in handy.
Poor Gizmo looks a little green around the ears.

Lol.
Oddly trophy-like, @wanton dome
and that's why we're not selling it ๐
people just don't understand copyright infringement
I can't stress how awesome of a deal the GitHub Student Pack is for a student. It's FREE! All of those really good tools and services.
