@haughty quiver Thanks for another fun show! 🥞
@haughty quiver 👍
Thanks!
argh I missed it
BlueFruit pancakes. Yum!
Hmmm. Might go and get me some pancakes now. 😋
THanks @haughty quiver
LOL power of suggestion @lavish patrol
Lol.
I may have been thinking specifically of Trader Joe's Pancake Bread...
The Original Pancake House is just 12.5 minutes from here. See y'all later!
Haha, bye!
Yum. Blueberry pancakes hit the spot.
Speaking of pancake bread, I found a depression-era recipe for peanut butter bread -- which makes the -best- french toast after leaving it out overnight.
@waxen thistle Can you share the recipe?!
@slow spire
Depression-Era Peanut Butter Bread
Ingredients:
2 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/3 cup milk
1/2 cup peanut butter [I used about 1/2 - 2/3 a normal jar, and loved it]
optional ideas: adding 1/2 cup of nutella, adding chocolate chips, using honey roasted/chunky/speciality peanut butter, using a different nut butter (almond butter, sunflower butter, etc).
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Mix together dry ingredients.
Mix in the milk, then the peanut butter.
Scrape into greased loaf pan and bake for about 1 hour.
Let cool 100% before slicing [typically a few hours].
For French Toast, leave cut slices out overnight exposed to air as this is a very moisture-rich, dense bread [French Toast excels with slightly stale bread).
Wow. No eggs! I'll have to try modifying that for keto. Thanks, @waxen thistle
@slow spire That's right, no eggs -- they suggest in the recipe to add eggs if one wants a fluffier texture, but it's not needed -- but it's a dense heavy bread.
@waxen thistle Are you going to come on Show and Tell next week to show off this Peanut Butter Bread?
Hahaha, probably not 🙂 The most technical aspect to it was using a gas oven with electric ignition 😛
Though in all seriousness, I do enjoy cooking. Wouldn't be too hard to do a casual cooking show/segments, but that market is pretty saturated to be honest. I don't know what I could bring to the table that's new or different.
Show and Tell isn't JUST for technical stuff
With just food, I could do a S&T every week for a few years if that's the case 🍽
Do a few and you might get invited to Adafruit one week just so they can taste it and aren't just stuck looking at it longingly.
Imagine hauling a pot of chili on the subway.
Hah
#Cooking_with_Mr_Certainly is trending 🙂
@waxen thistle control the oven via BFLE, that would be a twist 🙂

I'm sure my landlord wouldn't like me modifying his entry-level gas oven. He snickered when he saw my dual monitors and made a snide comment about "trying out for the Matrix, I see".
It was one of those situations where my better sensibilities won -- mind your matters when it comes to the hand that controls your housing.

Question: I have two 144 LEDs/Meter Dotstar strips. Right now, I figured out how to hook it up to a metro mini and powered it by a 3 AA battery pack. I would like to know if it's OK to power (2) of the meter strips using that one battery pack. If not, any power and wiring suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to have two separate power strips incorporated into clothing and powered by some portable source. Looking forward to your reply!

ooo more nornsmusic?
Yes!
a script called LESS_CONCEPTS @cinder wind
thanks @dense marlin i built a DIY version of monome norns called Fates.
It's essentially a tiny Super Collider appliance, and now also runs Pd and Organelle patches with Orac 2.
eer, what?
haha, yes.
this is norns https://monome.org/docs/norns/
it's very unclear from that what it actually is.
what it actually is is a Raspberry Pi compute module 3 with a custom DAC, 1/4" outputs and inputs L/R, headphone out, a screen, three knobs, three buttons.
I'm watching already this video: https://vimeo.com/266741634
It runs the audio software Super Collider. And you can script it with Lua.
Ah, I slowly understand
It's basically a way to remove the laptop from a Grids/Arc sort of setup, initially, and then a whole lot more thanks to community scripts.
And its software (maybe hardware?) open source. So the Fates is a DIY version that uses a new custom PCB for the DAC, I/O, screen, knobs, buttons part of it, and an RPi 3 B+ or 4 as the brains.
$ 800 ???
It's quite high end, and very well designed, but I wasn't going to get one at that price. So I'm thrilled w the DIY version which is more like $150 in parts.
Great, I will have a look on this. Thanks

great projects all around!!
i've gotta remember to come back here next week once my order is actually here, and i have something to show off x.x
There's so much hand held Xacto knife work in IvH's stuff, and she has an enormous team. Really cool that you're finding ways of automating some of this through 3D printing, @lethal lagoon .
@lethal lagoon I'll have to check out your scaling techniques -- I haven't yet found a great way to duplicate the ST: Disco pattern (seen here).
http://trekcore.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/deltas-yeoh.jpg
You're 23:50 UTC
@slow spire yes i love reading about the processes behind her work, it inspires me to push the tools i have farther to see what they can do
@waxen thistle ooh i love the discovery uniforms, i think a cricut vinyl cutter might work well for that pattern
@waxen thistle That looks like an excellent candidate for that technique. I'd spray it with a really polished gold spray paint.
The Cricut wouldn't reproduce the 3D nano-emblems, but it would be likely good enough.
@lethal lagoon Fancy you mentioned that -- I just picked up a Circuit Explore Air 2 that was on clearance last week 🙂 Haven't played with it much yet 🙂
Or even stenciling a flat, gold paint pattern, as a fallback.
@waxen thistle ooh so excited for you! definitely check out Beverly Downen's cricut videos on YouTube, she has some amazing techniques she uses for cosplay
@waxen thistle might they still be on clearance?
you could use it to cut iron on gold foil or use it to cut a super precise stencil, as @slow spire suggested
Is this her channel, @lethal lagoon ?
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBEYaWkfynDP-dTfmf8X5gw
@wanton dome Hmm, good luck. They were very limited supply, specific colors only at Wal-Mart. Original price $229, down to $139. I found mine organically, but post-purchase research on deal-tracking websites told me that the clearances have been reversed due to it being a price-controlled product.
YES! that is her, she is totally amazing and her Wasp cosplay uses the cricut a lot
I'm kind of impressed with the Masked Singer costumes these days.

@slow spire very cool!

Hi, @upbeat coral
@slow spire Aerial photography -- drone work?
Yep.
DJI Mavic Air and DJI Spark. Will be posting some stuff soon shot with Insta360 camera as well.

Are you in Canada, @waxen thistle ?
Walmart is clearing out the DJI Mavic Pro and Sparks -- and I couldn't say no to what little they had left in stock.
Nope, in the USA @slow spire -- NJ near NYC.
You just need to register with FAA online; just takes minutes.
And the brand new DJI Mavic Mini introduced today is < 250g, so doesn't need registration, AFAIK.
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
You all aren't shipping on Election Day, correct?
we are shipping
Good to know! Thanks!
Also, you can fly indoors without licensing. You will need to register with DJI, though, and probably update firmware, so I'd advise setting aside a few hours to do that before any planned vacation droning.
Even battery firmware on each battery needs to be updated occasionally.
Anyway, ping me any time with any q's on the Spark, @waxen thistle .
@waxen thistle mind if I DM you?
@slow spire Thanks dude, I might do that as I get things up and running. 🙂
"if you're a kid please have a parent-or-guardian-like entity do that for you."
i'm 15, if i ever got onto show and tell i would require an entity too wouldn't i
One of the very first Open Source hardware ideas was a simple RS-232 'plug' for a Garmin GPS.
@tacit linden That would be a good idea. You can make it easier for your parent or guardian by gathering all the steps ahead of time. Looking forward to seeing your project(s)! You don't even need to have finished them; they can be work in progress!
steps?
Just whatever's needed to sign up.
@tacit linden You would need a parent or guardian to send the email with your address to send the As Seen on Show and Tell sticker too. It's best to ask permission before joining the show, but you can join the show without a parent or guardian. 🙂
got it, yep
@tacit linden Are you working on or thinking up a project?
What are you hoping to make?
currently thinking up, very soon to be working on c:
thinking about making a tiny game console with an 8x8 LED matrix !!
@slow spire Quick question on drones -- for someone who's graduating from the $20 toy drone category, which is a smarter tool/toy -- the Spark or the Mavic Pro?
The Spark was my first, and I still love it. It does 1080p, gimbal-stabilized video, and 12 megapixel stills.
It's less expensive to crash.
I'd definitely get DJI Care Refresh with the Spark or the Mavic.
@waxen thistle as another drone nerd, I have to say that it depends on what you plan to do. If you need portability and ease of use, the spark is the way to go. If you want more flight options and are looking to do sone serious filming (freaking amazing cameras on some drones), I would go with the mavic 2.
With that, DJI will replace your damaged drone, as long as you can bag up the parts and send them back with a ~$60 deductible.
The mavic series has the new 360 degree obstacle avoidance on the mavic 2/enterprise
first open hardware project I'm aware of:
https://web.archive.org/web/20000311050608/http://pfranc.com/projects/g45contr/g45_idx.htm
Mavic 2 Pro has ~360° obstacle avoidance.
It does have some blind spots.
Skydio 2 has more complete, faster, foolproof obstacle avoidance.
it gets the job done. you should be flying in VLOS anyway
That's true, Techniack, visual line of sight is best practice.
But skydio has little user control correct? is it not all an AI?
Nonetheless, the 6 obstacle avoidance cameras on my Mavic Air have saved my $800 drone a few times.
@open girder Q: For makers who are private individuals not associated with a business entity and who aren't interested in selling but just want to share openly, are there any legal protection steps that should be observed? Asking for a friend.
(full disclosure, I'm a DJI fanboy)
@earnest cipher New Skydio 2 will do fully automated like the original Skydio R1, but also enables manual control with an RC control, like the DJIs.
@inner spade A "friend". 😄
😏
@earnest cipher and @slow spire thanks 🙂 That matches what I was thinking -- seems like I made a good call with the spark (plus it was the only option available at the time on sale).
@clear matrix hahaha.
What kind of deal did you get? Was it the Fly More Combo?
@slow spire It was a walmart clearance sale -- their trademarked "nothing on the shelf, but brickseek said they had 'limited stock'. So I asked and they dug through the cages and found one for $100" sale.
$100 for the Spark?!
$100 for the Spark, and there was potential for the Mavic Pro for $250.
Whoooooa.
they couldn't find one, but I was hoping to get one if I could.
I think CERN may've been involved in designing HTTP (The World Wide Web).
A project devoted to developing and discussing the CERN Open Hardware Licence. More info at the Wiki page
The Spark is still my favorite drone under $300. It's an absolute joy to use.
I remember when it came out, and it was near universal approval. So when I saw it on sale, I knew it was a steal. It was the Spark + Controller combo kit.
English scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. He wrote the first web browser in 1990 while employed at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland.
Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike (cc-by-sa) https://opendefinition.org/licenses/cc-by-sa/
Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike (cc-by-sa) - Open Definition - Defining Open in Open Data, Open Content and Open Knowledge
The Spark literally changed the way I look at everything outdoors.
The MIT License https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT
@slow spire Knowing it's the spark + controller combo, what are the first 3 accessories/parts/addons I should consider getting for it?
How many batteries do you have?
Just one included.
@open girder
Please no legal advice, but is license dilution a thing? If one line out of a thousand is GPL, do I still have to release my code? If I later remove that one line how does that work?
If something is 25% GPL code and 75% MIT, who wins?
It's like the git repo of Theseus
@open girder Excellent answer. Thanks!
I'd get at least one more. I got 3 total, and that seems to be a good number to take me through a day:
https://www.amazon.com/DJI-CP-PT-000789-Spark-Intelligent-Battery/dp/B072C6DWYX/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=dji+spark+battery&qid=1572482421&sr=8-3
This is my favorite case for the Spark:
https://www.amazon.com/PolarPro-Mini-Case-DJI-Spark/dp/B072T619NV/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=polarpro+spark+case&qid=1572482629&s=electronics&sr=1-3
It's tiny, and I just toss it in my backpack.
What makes it better than the one included?
It's smaller, and more like a second skin.
Did you get the coated foam case, or a fabric one?
6.7" square; 2.2" thick
That one is OK; it's basically reinforced packing material.
It's also much chunkier than the Polarpro I suggest.
@waxen thistle https://vimeo.com/223678649
@slow spire thank you -- I'll watch that after the broadcast [along with some of the channel Sophy suggested....and the backlog of TV shows I missed this week so far. hahah]
Debating that case or the XL case that holds the controller + extra batteries
I flew the Spark without a controller for 6 months, so, maybe one that holds the controller would be a good bet for you, if you intend to use the controller a lot.
If you bring the controller along, I'd definitely get some protection, both for the controller, and for the things that might get damaged by the controller's sharp control sticks.
I've never used the app -- so I'll need to try both and see what fits me better.
The app is overwhelming at first. First “hello world” I'd suggest is: Turn on everything, and wait for good GPS (green bar). Hit record. Launch drone, and just using left stick, raise drone 50 feet, spin around slowly. Land drone. Stop recording.
That sounds exactly what I need. A "hello world" to drones. Perfect.
What's the best programming language(s) for adafruit products? I know this is asked a lot
(sorry in advance)
@lapis hinge CircuitPython is my go to -- that and MakeCode.
You can always use Arduino, but it's not as beginner friendly.
Open-source electronic prototyping platform enabling users to create interactive electronic objects.
I might need the LED ring
@lapis hinge I'll second CircuitPython as a starting point. It's really good at getting an idea going in short order
nice!
@lapis hinge That guide I linked for CircuitPython is an awesome starting point too 🙂
That said, you don't have to use code academy but it's a good resource if it fits your learning style
sorry if I'm being a bother, I really am jumping into programming and this seems like an interactive way I could learn
What @waxen thistle said. There are a lot of good resources on learn.adafruit.com
Asking questions is never a bother here 😄 We're here for each other.
no worries, you're not being a bother in the slightest
Welcome, @lapis hinge !
Loved this one tonight.
we're here to answer questions!
alright, well I'm probably gonna buy the LED ring-thing and start programming
@lapis hinge wew! Do it! We'll be here to help 😉
@lapis hinge For specific questions, look at the channels under the ^ HELP WITH header -- such as #help-with-circuitpython
You can always ask in a channel like #help-with-circuitpython if you need advice on what to get
got it
lol
And the forums at https://forums.adafruit.com are another awesome resource
indeed
May sound like a stupid question, but will python also help in this?
@open girder Thanks for another awesome, very informative show!
not a stupid question. Yes, it will help
nice!
Bye
CircuitPython is designed to be as similar as possible as CPython (AKA "Python")
See ya all next week!
time for 🌮 bye everyone!
bye all !
in the show last night adafruit alluded to their being shows today.. any word when?
@paper schooner I don't think they'll be live streaming - they'll record new products and the other standard sections of the show that they didn't get to yesterday and post them to YouTube. As for when, it's when they have time. 🙂
If you're subscribed to the channel, I think it has the option to notify you if they're streaming, and if they do, it'll push to the standard venues.

nice @lament lion ! post a pic when you can 🙂
Bye all.
I added a photo I took a few years ago during winter. I had to make a new hole for usb since the port lines up different for CPBluefruit and Gizmo compared to the Hallowing.
@lament lion that's awesome!
i was thinking(hoping?) to participate in show-n-tell later... i read: To show and share your project, view the chat in Discord https://adafru.it/discord in the #livebroadcast topic. Look for the link in the chat window to join the StreamYard chat. , which i assume will connect my mac's camera. But how do i show screen images (or screens)? Thank you.
@proven dragon When you're up, there should be a screenshare button, and then on our end, we'll switch to your screenshare.
I don't know if you can connect to Streamyard without a camera and screenshare only - I am unaware of whether we have tested that.
doh I missed the live show. 😦
Thankyou @clear matrix I very much appreciate your help.
@proven dragon You're entirely welcome!
So cool!
@onyx arrow I am new to this channel. I have an arduino project for show and tell. is this the right channel?
@misty grotto hi, yes, this is the place. Just keep an eye out for a link right before the show.
it'll be posted here.

hi all
Hi Virgil
hey Floyd, welcome
This is the first time I have a project to share on Show and tell
I saw your question above--I've been on a few times over the years, but not much lately
what are you working on?
I have been hired by a Seamanship school in Astoria OR to help them with a training tool for navigational lighting on Ocean going tugboats
sounds really cool
the students are required to pass an exam from the US Coast Guard to get their Able Bodied Seaman certification
So I have built a box using Arduino Nano & Neo-Pixels
great--I'll be interested to see it
I hear the presentations are very short I am not sure I can explain it in the alotted time
Hello all.
Hey Andy!
3 minutes usually
I also built some models for the school but they are too big for this forum
yah @misty grotto keep it to 3-5 mins or less so we can get to everyone for sure
7 feet of Neopixels! 😮
Needs moar Neopixels. 😉
@open girder I am guessing you have read what I have posted so far so you can help with the intro and I can focus on the demo
for the tug I have a total of 98 Neo-pixels
we'll let folks know that in discord there are more details
ok ty
Looking forward to seeing it.
best way to do it
@misty grotto 👍
I agree

Good evening all you wonderful people....and TURTLES! 🐢
I forgot show and tell was today
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
@novel yoke You made it. 😉
I’ve been meaning to show off my recent project but forgot to repair it in time for today
It broke during a recent interview
@novel yoke 😦
Are those
powered turtles fluent in the ninja arts?
@waxen thistle Only the teenage ones.
Lol.
I liked the toasters so much, I actually paid for the software package.
Flying Toasters, aka Cylon Aviators.
Next week I’ll be ready for sure
I remember a Simpsons-themed version of those screen savers, around the era of "Who shot Mr. Burns?"
Toasters in spaaaaace.
My father's childhood home burnt down when a toaster burst into flame. I think you can find a phobia for ANYTHING. 😄
Phobias and paranoia of electrical things catching fire is very real. I had a computer power supply go poof....and it actually got thrown outside with a lot of yelling and mild amount of panic.
[this was many years ago, era of Pentium II with budget PSUs. never cheap out on power, folks. never again.]
@waxen thistle Also, invest in a couple of fire extinguishers. 😉
Absolutely no joke, always keep on in the kitchen and one within arms reach of anything that generates heat. Laundry room, workbench, 3D printer, hot glue gun, bottle of 1,000,000 scoville hot sauce, etc.
awesome Floyd!
I once killed power to a server during a change window to make sure everything was plugged into the UPS the way I thougt it was. The UPS burst into flames. consumer UPSes, amirite?
What is One yellow light?
@misty grotto Cool project.
turns out it was just a low battery on our motor
That project really floats my boat!
thanks
Who here likes fdm or sla 3D printing?
who do I send a note to explaining the details of the project?
I know 3D printing what is sla 3D?
pt@adafruit.com for the project ... and support@adafruit.com for the free sticker 🙂
ok ty
Sla is resin printing
@misty grotto SLA is stereolithograph apparatus and is Resein Printing
Sla can be with a laser or uv and lcd
how is that different from PLA?
Resin printing is usually MSLA or Masked SLA
ok similar to sintering?
Not exactly
PLA is a material rather than a technique
Great work everyone.
The smallest thing can make the biggest difference. All because an MIT student wanted to make some electronics kits. And here we all are.
Another cool S&T.
wow you cram alot into one show!
See ya in a few
With the consumers level printers the print bed raises up while the print goes bottom up while being printed
It uses uv light to cure sections of resin to form the part
Very different from meting plastic to print right side up then let that plastic solidify
Thanks everyone.

@lavish patrol And Demon Dogs, which was owned by one of the guys from the band, was on the CTA property for many years. Until the CTA kicked them out. 😦

Twitch has a 2.11 second delay to broadcaster (it fluctuates) -- it's by far my favorite service.
I'll judge instead of entering on the AT category 🙂
Twitch does have minor hiccups now and then but it's way less annoying than YouTube's spinner, and crap resolution after it freezes and so on.
I have an idea for a featherwing. Just got to get it done. Not enough hours in a day.

@waxen thistle all I could think of was "It's Turtles All the Way Down"
cool test jig!
That video reminded me - I got a CPB with a bad reset button... do you test them?
gettin' jiggy with it
@pearl shoal I would guess they test a sample from a batch. Perfect QC would be to test all but not always realistic.
I got a bad screen on a MonsterMask. Close exam shows it to be a blue film at the ribbon cable. All my others are black

A few months ago I wanted to write an app in CircuitPython that could write to the capacitive TFT and do plotting, and react to touches on the screen. Is the capacitive touchscreen and graphics output no supported? Does Python have full GFX-compatible libraries?
Q: I know Stemma is meant to be I2C or digital/analog in... but can you do UART over it on the M4?
Q: could the gesture sensor do blink detection?
@pearl shoal if you mean the port on the m4, it's connected to a sercom so should be able to do spi i2c or uart
Q: @open girder How many years have you been doing this? I've been watching (less regularly lately, sorry) since about 2010. When you figure out time travel, what would you go back and tell yourself, ie, pitfalls, milestones, where you're at today?
How do I connect a battery from a phone to a feather and be able to charge it but I don’t have the female port for it.
maybe not spi because more pins
@pearl shoal I routinely use STEMMA for UART, particularly for converting classic MIDI for the NeoTrellis M4. -- but it doesn't chain well.
Will CircuitPython run Machine Learning models like ResNet34 Yolo v3?
Blinking is one of the last things that can be tracked when people have ALS or SMA

Weird background buzzing on the audio. 🤔
I think it's the radio mike.
🔎 Mystery! 🔍
I think it's in the mic pack -- it changed when you handled it
[but I might be wrong?]
[shhh, he thinks we're all people here. don't tell him otherwise 🤖]
Lol.
Still buzzing.
I thought it was the pack! 😛
It gets louder as you move/reach to your left.
Did you leave a van der graaf generator running?
🧐
🐢
That compressed air on hot glue is a very COOL trick. Never would have thought of it 🙂 Any other little tricks you know of off the top of your head?
Road trip!
@haughty quiver Thanks, John!
Thanks @haughty quiver !
@haughty quiver Thanks for another awesome show! And a special thank you for the compressed air tip -- it's something that I absolutely needed for working with plastics and hot glue. ☃
Very welcome!
Smashing everything with a 3lb. hammer seems to have stopped the buzzing.
Yep. A 3lb hammer will do it every time. 😉

Any idea how long the feathers run off that coincell?
@hard hollow @rocky reef How are you liking you CR-10 V2? Have you tried it with flexible materials yet?
Missed your show, was going to ask 😦
@paper schooner hey no worries, yes we're digging the CR-10 V2 thus far. Ninjaflex cheetah prints nicely on both V1+V2. The bands in the watch was printed in ninjaflex cheetah using the V2.
@paper schooner pedro upgraded the V2 with the BLtouch sensor and flexy magnetic build plate which has the PEI sheet.
@paper schooner yes, i'm always posting vids of it on the socials : https://twitter.com/videopixil/status/1194302314166792193
