I remember some voice recognition -- many years ago at the Franklin Institute there was a Star Trek TNG exhibit, and one part of it that simulated the TNG computer with voice access. You could speak into a microphone, and after about 5 minutes of saying proper names three times each to "learn" you voice, you could then navigate the interface.

Q: what's the difference between the aes on the samd51 and the aes on the crypto-chip?
A glove that has acceleromitors on the figures
Motor and servo control.
@open girder I'd like two mics on the braincraft, to do detect direction of sounds.
@dusty salmon Or maybe one accelerometer plus flex sensors.
Q: What is the hardest part of introducing/producing custom products?
multiple stema connectors
what do you think about the risc V opensource Instruction set? Should we jump into the adventure and get excited or wait as its continue to grow up? With all the new chip that had come out like the sifive freedom unleased mcu or the kendryte k210 soc (Witch is targeted to AI and machine learning) it's verry tempting but at the same time soo recent.
Suggestion -- feather compatibility for braincraft, not unlike the PyBadge/PyGamer.
TF-Lite on Feather M4 Express?
Another suggestion - water-resistant/outdoor cases designed specifically for the braincraft.

๐
@waxen thistle Google ASL glove (images) for some inspiration.
Also, interesting article on the problems facing ASL gloves, many due to misunderstanding of the nature of ASL:
@slow spire Indeed -- from my experience, ASL varies greatly from place to place, user to user. Just like spoken language has slang, small groups have inside jokes as a shorthand for sharing experiences, etc.
And not to discourage anyone, but ASL has its own syntax, and is actually based on French sign language.
It's indeed a challenge, and I wouldn't want to discourage anyone either. It's one of those field applications of a technology that has so much gray area and unsolved questions (and unknown, unasked questions)....where the current solution is a trained, professional ASL interpreter.
I think of it like this -- it's like how automatically-generated closed captioning isn't a perfect system, but it makes an immense volume of content available to deaf/hard of hearing that was previous completely inaccessible. Best solution is to have a human manually do CC -- but it can be cost prohibitive.
ASL gloves could be treated in the same mindset. It's not perfect, but an interpreter isn't always available.
I think ASL real-time translation will happen, but it will need Deaf makers involved to get it right.
100% @slow spire
@dusty salmon An airlift gizmo makes sense.

Go! @paper peak Go! We need HID on BLE!
I'm out, you should be able to get in now
@waxen thistle They really do. Iโm redesigning the parking distance sensor project Iโm making to use a PyBadge instead of the Feather I was using before.
If only they werenโt out of stock so much of the time lately! ๐ข
@steep pilot great idea for when losing your friends on the playa
My go-to prototyping device is a Circuit Playground Express. The poor old Arduino is sitting in a drawer, unused as of late. Plus, CircuitPython is slam-dunking it lately....4.1.0 RC1 is pretty speedy.
Iโm getting ready to move, and Iโm seriously thinking about ditching my Arduino and ATtiny stuff when I pack.
@steep pilot thanks!
Hangouts one oh one ๐
I think its awful that they still do that.... every other conference system has solve it
@dim wigeon As much as I shudder at getting rid of components (us packrats totally don't have a problem ๐ ), I hear where you're coming from. Get rid of them the way you want, but if you haven't thought about it, please consider donating them to a youngster or an electronics group ๐
@waxen thistle For sure. If I get rid of them, Iโll donate them to the MakerSpace here.
Sticky Bombs?
Here's Cristophe's Shapeways shop: https://www.shapeways.com/shops/boopstore
[then again, there's a part of me that thinks: if I gave a youngster a vintage-ish Arduino that needs a plethora of components, etc.....am I doing them a disservice since they'd probably hit a wall and get frustrated quickly? Wouldn't it be better for their learning to just give them a CPX or a similar all-in-one board with CircuitPython?]

@pearl shoal I'm not sure if there are. I'll take a look. I have a library and breakout for the A5242 which are two channels. I haven't put that library on the Library Manager as yet. All this HyperCard discussion is giving me flashbacks to high school. ๐
I love it.
Something I learned this week is TypeDeclaring $variables in PHP saves a lot of time in debugging. It warns when the wrong data is first introduced not when it runs fowl.
My high school's most advanced tech class (back in the day), was "advanced programming" -- which literally was typing & editing Word docs (non-programmatically), so that your output matched what the teacher had. It was a follow-each-step-exactly type of instruction, but the instructions were designed for Word 6.0 and the school had Word 98 installed.
I don't know if there was a more effective way to discourage anyone from entering technology.
@waxen thistle That sounds just soul-sucking.

i2c is kinda slow though.
Happy to see a more standard breakout board interconnect scheme. I2C is pretty nice for most of my projects.
Have been building in 4-pin STEMMA into my custom PCBs for about 6 months now...
@dim wigeon It left a lot to be desired, but I recognized it was a means to an end. I was already into tech by that point, and I was given strong suggestion to have a "tech class" on my HS resume, for appearances when applying to colleges. Even if the content was paltry and ineffective.
Moral of the story: Never let your schooling get in the way of your education.
@waxen thistle thatโs been my experience too. I think the only truly valuable thing I learned from schooling was how to use a library. My entire career has been based around things that Iโve taught myself.
I'm balding: Use TinyUSB!

Q: Will the new app work with all of your Bluetooth devices? Or just the new CPX BLE?
@pearl shoal It seems like many of the assistive technology switches & tools are ridiculously expensive. To someone like me who isn't familiar with the field, it seems like it's ripe for disruption -- why haven't other companies produced value-centered hardware? Would it be due to patents, etc?
With CircuitPython 4.1 realeased will theire be a Blynka library update for the Raspberry Pi for using the Crickit hat?

Thanks for another awesome evening of shows!
@pearl shoal Just watched the video you linked, and now I have a better understanding of the challenges regarding making AT affordable.
It's fundamentally a political problem... but I have no faith in solving it directly in the political system. So I train teens, college students, and Makers to create AT solutions and show what can be done inexpensively. That puts eyeballs on it.
To be honest, I'm not surprised. I've seen very similar behavior in many organizations -- "you have a budget of X. suddenly, every service provider has a solution for exactly X." Then you add in feature legislation and high amount of testing (which discourages new entries to the market)....it's a spiral that keeps getting worse.
Which really does move the needle. AT prices have dropped since our efforts (and those of others) started a few years ago
Yes, and there's another problem: the high profits give these successful AT companies enough capital to buy new entrants to the market
There's an anti-trust lawsuit in Europe about Tobii doing that recently
And the resources to continue lobbying for another ride on the merry-go-round.
The closest analog I can find is military spending.
And if they're a publicly traded company, they're obligated to behave this way.
Correct - few AT firms are public, but Tobii (and Dynavox before Tobii bought them) are
Many (most?) AT companies are employee owned (some are closely held private firms). That gives them a different mentality - salaries aren't as costly, so they're slow to shrink their sales/support staff.
Especially if they can continue being government funded.
We are trying a very bottom up approach to solving this. Loudly build equivalent (or superior) solutions using low-cost parts and labor.
And these solutions can provide a better fit for the individual too. I've read enough about 3D printed prosthetic hands that they're often more functional than all but the most expensive commercial options.
With prosthetics the device is just the beginning. Fitting and customization can be time consuming
Once again, thanks for the video link, Bill ๐ Now it makes more sense.
@short elbow That's true of much of AT - and certainly with prosthetics. We try hard to get the Makers (mainly kids) involved with the whole lifecycle when we deploy a solution. We have them with us at an interview, multiple iterations with the user, and them long-term support and maintenance. It works well with the way the robotics teams are rewarded
This helps explain it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh03EisR3Ro
Site note: if the Rays blow another huge lead, I'm going to lose it!

Bye bye ๐
right on , thanks all!
Thank you, JP!
Thanks @haughty quiver Knowing about direct pin access via MakeCode is very helpful.
Yes, super helpful since the feather pins are all available on PyBadge and PyGamer!
Should soon have a Pins category in MakeCode Arcade just like there is in adafruit.makecode.com for Circuit Playground Express.
so you can use blocks
I <3 blocks
did you mention (or did I imagine) that there will be a path to using I2C (e.g. https://www.adafruit.com/product/4026)?
Yes, there's a seesaw extension already, but the implementation will be getting easier soon.
Roger that thank you
Extremely fumble-fingered today
@inner spade if you want to try it out, this is the read line: pins.A3.analogRead()
Thanks! Will your guide include the javascript line or will blocks be ready by then?
Not sure yet!
MSFT team is quick, so good chance for blocks
there's good tab completion in MC JS window, so type this to see all the pins let foo = pins.
(if you copy paste you'll need to delete the period and re-type it to see the list)
Cool. In my design imaginings, the Gamer and Badge with MakeCode are becoming increasingly attractive as project front panels, so having direct pin access will be a real plus!
Agreed!
And if you don't need the extras, a PyBadge LC is a pretty low cost way to do a front panel w IO
I think we're in the alternate universe -- we're saying MSFT is quick to respond and they produce good open source products. I like this parallel timeline.
lol
It's challenging the old preconceptions, that's for sure.
Probably will not use the LC -- will usually need the JSTs and FeatherWing connection on the underside.
I have too many OSH Park custom wings in my inventory that are in need of a home.
@MrCertainly do you believe coding intricacy exists ?
Let's just say I know someone who (at msft) had a meeting with their manager & their manager for admitting during a casual employee lunch break that they used a Gen1 Macbook Air as their personal machine to run windows.
A badge combined with the classic MIDI interface is just begging to become a portable MIDI sniffer.
So it's a great thing to see them embracing other platforms and open source.

I know of several non-tech folks who 100% transitioned away from a desktop/laptop in the last 4-5 years....they have a phone and tablet. That's it.
I hate to admit it, I'm slightly envious. It really simplifies their day to day life.
I had an iPad Pro as my primary computer at work for about 3 years. (I'm a manager at a software company). I ssh'd into a VPS server to do development stuff. The only reason I went back to a laptop is that the Salesforce.com report builder doesn't work in Mobile Safari.
I find that although I can get things done via phone and tablet, my desktop lets me run circles around my phone and tablet.
I updated my PyPortal to 4.1.0 yesterday--very simple install and what a difference it made in performance.

@maiden tangle There's one in the Adafruit store that's pretty solid for an entry level DMM, but if you're nearby a Harbor Freight tool store -- you can get one "free with purchase" with a coupon. They sell chip brushes which you can use a 20% coupon on (makes it around 50 cents) + free item coupon.

OK, so the video editing control surface is outputting only over USB. I think you'd need Raspberry Pi or a microcontroller or that can act as a USB Host (I've used Teensy 3.6 for that) and then passes along MIDI CC messages to your MIDI device. The biggest unknown is what the message format would be coming from the video editor control surface. That is beyond my knowledge, but probably someone skilled in logic analyzer-fu could make suggestions or give a reality check.
i figured i would have to open the usb device up and solder stuff to the individual controls to bypass the board in that device
also, i have no drivers for that usb device
if i plug it into my computer it just makes the cursor drift
Oh, cool, so you could dig in there and add a microcontroller that uses those various knobs and buttons as inputs, and then send out MIDI. A Feather M4 Express would be great for that.
@haughty quiver johnpark a feather m0 could work? i notice it shows up in my midi manager when plugged in
Yes, for sure.
yes, i should get a m4
M0 is totally fine for that.
ok that's a start
out of curiosity, what are the two devices if you don't mind saying?
livid cntrl:r for midi and the usb device was put out years ago by videonics and is called commandpost i think - it's not in front of me at the moment
the usb device is very well made
back of the livid midi
that is so rad
pins and dipswitches to right of midi ports
i love the thing
it is so completely programmable
usb device
those pins look sort of like a J-Tag programming header.
that may be what they are. it's pretty simple
i tested it with a pot using jumpers and it did respond
but the wiring of the slider on the usb has a 5 pin cable coming out of it and i'm not sure what all the pins are for
ah, so they have what they are calling XPC expansion jacks and devices http://lividinstruments.com/news/expansion-jacks/
http://wiki.lividinstruments.com/wiki/OhmRGB#Expansion_Jacks this has a bit of info on the pinouts
ah, but it is the videonics device i can't find documentation for
looks like it is just expecting analog devices, such as pots and sliders, so not a messaging protocol or anything complex.
it would be kind of a waste to use the videonics with my livid as i wouldn't be able to employ all the inputs
right
so, that fader on your Command Post should be able to be plugged in, same probably for the xy joystick.
that's what i was thinking
i'm guessing the jog wheel is a rotary encoder, so would require a Feather or similar in the middle.
but the ribbon cables coming from the slider and joystick have more pins than expected
ah ok
so perhaps i could employ everything including buttons if i put a feather in there
sounds possible
well, i wasn't really sure the best way to go about this so, i understand a little better now
if you can use a multimeter to determine which pins on those ribbon cables are power, ground and wiper that would be a good first step.
ok
thanks for introducing me to the CNTRL:R it's rad!
do you think it would be easier to use something like a teensy to just convert all the inputs as a usb device or do i need to insert the feather to go directly to the livid's ports?
sure @haughty quiver ! i think it's cool that you're impressed with it
you should see it light up
it would be near impossible for me personally to decode the USB coming from the CommandPost without help, so I'd start trying to see how I could intercept the individual parts with a Feather or similar.
ok, thanks for your input @haughty quiver . much appreciated
here's an explainer video from Livid https://vimeo.com/23487823
oh good, thanks. i don't think i've seen that one
also, their products have an online editor for customizing all the knobs and sliders and leds
so great
looks like you could DIY an add on surface with this kit: http://shop.lividinstruments.com/omni-board/
yes, but i try to use stuff i have cause those modules add up $$$
right on, love it.
it is a very smart system they got going, but somewhat proprietary
wow, those boards are only $20 - i thought they were a lot more
not much info on the shop page
they do have their own wiki pages for more documentation

Direct music sounds from MakeCode browser works great!
... a little loud and clipping, though.
๐
EEEEEEEeeeeeemail.
My ears!
@haughty quiver The game sounds are MUCH louder than your voice.
this game should be called "the deaf-a-nator" ^^
Lol.
voice levels are peaking at -8db, music at +1db.
We could hear you ok, but the game over sound was....loud. Attention getting ๐
I tried using the featherwing extension on makecode arcade but can't see how to interact with those.. are those WIP?
just like real fishing
I love the pin-specific stuff!
What's the degree of polyphony on the sound on MakeCode beta? Is the melody block fixed on C major?
Thanks for the great show
@haughty quiver Thanks for another awesome show!
Thanks, @haughty quiver
Thanks, happy cranking
Thanks! Excellent workshop session today!
thanks so much, I appreciate it.
@burnt anchor sorry I didn't see the question, the polyphony I haven't tested beyond 2 notes. The UI key is fixed in C but you can go to javascript and do anything you want.
I think I may be the worst virtual fisherman you watch on a livestream all day today.
My question wasn't timed well. And I think fishing (do Americans used the term angling?) is often more about the experience than the catch.
that's for sure :]
we don't use that term, at least not us very casual fishermen. Maybe more experience ones do?
I caught one finally!
@haughty quiver 3 note polyphony works, I didn't go further as I got distracted by logging bug tickets
Good evening all you wonderful people!
A wild Scott and Kattni has appeared!
We love it when you push those boundaries!

... and Kattni inspires us!
The open source community is lucky to have such positive and thoughtful people like Scott and Kattni.
This week for my bi-weekly soapbox columns I thought I'd share some of my notes I've jotted down recently about making things, working with and supporting beginners. Lately, I've been thinking about how much fun it is when you're a beginner at something as opposed to being an...

yay @clear matrix ! Great job! ๐
๐
Very nice ๐
Instructables is reasonably friendly (for publishing)
Happy CP Day Fam! :)!
Kattni's keynote inspired me to take on mentoring for someone i met at PyOhio. I did not realize how much I had to offer, despite the overwhelming feeling that I had little to offer. I'm told I'm already making a difference.
Thanks @clear matrix. Great job!
Very nive

Really strongly agree with what Limor said about things moving so fast!
Thanks everyone!! ๐
Thanks @clear matrix! And thanks to the community here, for being the community you are!! It's a special little slice of the internet we have. Keep making!
CircuitPython day - History of CircuitPython @rapid hornet @open girder #adafruit @circuitpython #circuitpython-dev #circuitpython-dev https://youtu.be/SwNQdTU9m8s
@clear matrix An interesting journey and talk - I missed a bit in the middle, need to catch up on that.
Broadcast #2 is live! ๐
Hi @rapid hornet @proper trench and PT
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
The sound of the air circulation system at Adafruit feels as iconic, familiar, and comforting as the low-frequency hums of the USS Enterprise, DS9, or Stargate Command.
@proper trench Lovely new hair (photo shoot today? - I have learned to watch your hair as an indicator of an upcoming award or magazine cover) ๐
I have been told by @spring heath that my Python code is not Pythonic ("You code like a C coder").
Without a doubt, our biggest use for CP in our AT work is creating HID controllers. That will be more true when @paper peak finishes the HID over BLE/GATT code. It's an amazing quick tool.
iOS and Android have MUCH better switch control for our users
I meant it with admiration @pearl shoal
๐

Thanks again for another wonderful evening of shows @open girder!
Ciao!
Thanks everyone! great job sharing more of the start of CircuitPython @rapid hornet !
@rapid hornet @open girder @sage aspen In my imagination, you're all hacking the new Teensy 4.0 to see who will bring up CP first. ๐
@rapid hornet would win that one.
Maybe. You've been bringing up a lot of new boards lately, though, @sage aspen
Oh, just the ones running linux. ๐
SSD1306, ILI9341, etc. ?
ILI9341 (shields, featherwings, breakouts, multiple sizes), HX8357, ST7735 (multiple sizes, shield, featherwing), ST7789 (multiple sizes), etc.
Cool. That's a bunch of work.
Yeah, and updating both Arduino and CircuitPython along with any driver and example tweaks.
Oh my.
But the guides really needed it.
Yeah, they certainly do.
Some of them the pages are faded yellow, and the example code isโฆ different.
And I'm talking about guides in general, not just display ones.
Yeah, there's almost 2000 guides
Still, the guides are a better than those from any other DIY vendor.
๐
I just wish more people in the forums knew that they are there. I wonder sometimes if the product page could use a real prominent link to its corresponding guide; maybe a standard icon?
There usually is a link, but it ends up in TL;DR land.
Possibly. That's a really good idea.
That is a very good idea
On some product pages, the description doesn't even include the "Datasheet, firmware files, CAD files, and Fritzing object available in the product tutorial".
Yeah, I've noticed that. We usually add them to the guides though.
I mean, on some product pages there is no link to the corresponding Learn guide.
It's probably because a guide hasn't been written that links to that product.
Oh yeah. For some products, that was likely the case at launch.
Like the RA8875 display driver didn't have a guide until I wrote it this year and it's been in the store for years.
