Daisy, Daisy...
lol, ACall
Thanks @waxen thistle !
@haughty quiver I want to make a pair of articulated steampunk goggles now!
Mr. Burns in The Simpsons always answered the phone with "ahoy, ahoy!"
How did the Vikings greet each other?
I remember reading that Mr Bell wanted everyone to answer the phone with "Hoy Hoy!"
Bluefruit LE Sniffer - Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE 4.0) - nRF51822 - Firmware Version 2 https://www.adafruit.com/product/2269
@odd stream that would be fantastic!
@haughty quiver Just wait for the next project. I prototyped the mechanics during Show & Tell.
๐
could you share the episode or blog of lady ada's ez servo spinny eyes
PT would love a sniffer that works with wirecast...
the date of the spinny eyes i can't seem to find it
@haughty quiver Interestingly, I'm using MakeCode for a lot of my small projects.
Black and White Eye Stickers https://www.adafruit.com/product/3840
@odd stream Makecode + CPX makes prototyping simple things so easy.
I started teaching in a class this year...first year of teaching it... it is called Innovators and Makers...and I am starting a club sponsored by Girls who Code...this is awesome!
I introduced the class by showing Lady ADA! I am looking for help and collaboration peeps that teach middle school.
Lol. You could have a lot of fun with those in the office.
@waxen thistle @odd stream I agree totally! Also, now I'm using maker.makecode.com with other boards, like Metro M0 Express
@waxen thistle Yup. Mainly because of the sensor events.
High Temp Waterproof DS18B20 Digital Temperature Sensor - 3m long https://www.adafruit.com/product/3846
So it's especially useful with the CPX.
@autumn storm head over to the #classroom channel. its for our educator friends to discuss education of making/STEM.
@autumn storm i don't teach but do a summer camp if you wanna chat - great job by the way!!!

What's this? A record player for ants?? Not at all! This is a DVD/CD Spindle Motor, that thing that's inside a CD or DVD player, that turns the disc around really fast. These motors ...
@autumn storm @muted mesa i'm not on discord a lot cause my internet here is horrible usually

@lament sluice With science.
oh my...that is BOMB!
Adafruit teams up with Moscot, with contact lenses for giants.
@lament sluice i'm thinking paint before the pins are pressed in.
then it would have to be done by the factory that assembles the headers...
Adafruit HalloWing M0 Express https://www.adafruit.com/product/3900
This is Hallowing..this is Hallowing... Hallowing! Hallowing!ย Are you the kind of person who doesn't like taking down the skeletons and spiders until after January? Well, we've ...
I'm pretty sure the pins are loaded into the molds before the plastic is injected....
Happy HalloWing ๐
I think the pins are molded into the plastic. No?
but you can slide the pins in and out if you press hard
at least you can on most headers
Cyclops wing.
looks kinda like there might be a thin extra layer of colored plastic on top of the black?
jesse: true, but that's because plastic doesnt bond that well to smooth metals.
@lament sluice Silk screen?
yeah but how do they do it over the pins?
maybe pad printing?
ooh! Aqua dipping! (it's something like that, anyhow)
Or someone with a tiny paint brush and a lot of time. ๐
i feel like aqua dipping would be overkill for something like this, plus they'd have to align the piece super precisely
Aha. It's a flat piece of plastic stuck on the top.
i thought i saw some extra plastic!
header elves business plan: 1) paint headers. 2)... 3) Profit!
I wonder what's so secret!
Lol.
Surely would be nice if you could roll off the low frequency roar.
No love for PennStation Metro? ๐ ๐
wow, that looks like a really good prototyping board. any idea of price yet?
๐ป ๐
This is VERY nice.
Top Secret - "I'm soiling my haptics right now!"
Prototyping... this will be a beautiful production board.
Q: Can you sense clear colorless liquid levels through a small clear glass test tube in a closed system? No access to the liquid. Can only see through the tube. Looking to measure liquid level or presence/absence of liquid. What sensors should be considered please?
@odd stream do you know how many true analog out DACs that chip has?
MakeCode + GrandCentral Metro
Now I really want to get my Scheme implementation done ๐
Q: Why don't any circuit python boards support 12V power supplies (they seem to all max out at 9V)?
So I can't ask about a trinket m4?
@merry gulch there are some weird black magic capacitive sensors
@haughty quiver 2 DACs.
@haughty quiver Too many?
capacative liquid level sensing
Use a laser and refraction.
thanks @muted mesa
what is the timing on the raspberry pi crickit?
if you have enough segments, you can get whatever resolution you want (within reason)
laser diffraction could detect the liquid
Q: How are non-USA frequency radio boards/featherwings tested, without annoying the FCC?
err, interferometer
is there a magnification value associated with the new glass lens?
Higher input voltage means more power wasted as heat since it's a linear regulator.
@merry gulch https://www.hackster.io/team-protocentral/non-contact-capacitive-liquid-level-sensing-using-fdc1004-9333c7
cool, thx
Q: Any plans to expand the FONA line, esp. Feather M0?
Excellent, thanks for the answer! I will be buying a METRO M0 Express to utilize a 12V power supply. Maybe it's worth updating the documentation to clarify this is supported, I may not be the only one looking to use 12V
Q: any tips for soldering uFL connectors?
Please roll off the low frequency roar/
@ Jesse, thanks for the link on sensing liquids. I will check it out.
no problem!
The product page for the MetM0 says 7-9V input range.
i'm biding my time until there's a trivia product i really want
Do you believe micro-controllers like Arduino can be used for Machine Learning through logic programming, where it can predict output based on the previous data gathered?
You could get a LM7809 and knock it down to 9V first.
What happens in Vegas...
I would think there is not enough memory in arduinos for ML
@rich perch M4 for sure. M0.. maybe. Not for training, but for running the 'net.
But unlikely one of the 8 bit AVRs.
@rich perch also look at the (discontinued but still available) intel curie platform
they supposedly have a built-in tiny neural network, but documentation is very poor
It's always so nice to hear someone so thankful and excited like that ๐
How the roar and the compressor is almost covering you up. Please investigate rolling off the lows.
The Arduino101, yes. It has a builtin 'net.
dead
night!
Intel's got a lot 'a quittin' in 'em.
Thanks @open girder, @dim knot, and company! Fabulous set of shows, as always. Good night everyone.
@open girder Thanks again for another evening of awesome shows!
Great show! @open girder
seriously, they had a pretty nice system with edison/jetson/curie
@drifting parrot unfortunately the factory is humming along and those compressor sounds are probably not low enough to roll off without muffling voices.
Thanks @open girder ๐
as was pointed out, they didn't want to do the work to document it though
tyty froots!
i was AFK for the whole show, but thanks for a great stream!
yeah they didn't even mention the neural net stuff in the sales material for the 101
Bye all. Gotta go to bed.
I looked away, missed my moment of zener. ๐ฆ
Early to bed, early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy and.. oh, never mind. ๐
this year for halloween i'm going as a wifi router with WEP
oh wow the show and tell was short
You're referring to the @haughty quiver boingboin g music that just started in the back of mt WoW game?
A little cognitive dissidence to have that start up while I'm fighting zombies in the swamp.
Hello! Music sound is -8db ave, -1db peak
@odd stream I was indeed ๐
Voice sound is -6db ave, -2db peak. Excellent!
Love your Disney cup !
brb .. coffee sounds good
I liked Planes

Cars and Planes
oh....Ahoy there
Almost matches your shirt
โCognitive dissidenceโ sounds even more intense than โCognitive dissonance โ
In my case, itโs really โCognitive defianceโ - refusing to think
That domed lens was truly amazing
Circuit Python is only available on Express boards, right ? Feather M0 Express, but not Feather M0 ?
Good afternoon all you wonderful people!
Remember to give your loops a forever home.
CircuitPython will run on non-express M0 boards, too.
ha, I need to find out how to run that on M0 then !
Yes, volts too, although mine was reading low. Getting a replacement ๐
Surgeons need to be careful? ๐ช
oh my daughter will definitely love that project !
hum, the original game was 4 years old and above... I guess 1 year is what it's gonna take me to build ๐

Very important!!
For Operation Game, make the LEDs do a heartbeat pattern, until you lose the game, then it goes BEEEEEEEEP
Have it sense if you turn it upside down to remove the parts...

@haughty quiver Thanks for another awesome show!
Thanks @haughty quiver !
Great idea/execution thanks @haughty quiver
thanks very much
You're all kinds of efficient today, @haughty quiver
I like the 30 minute format. Very good.
It's not much better on the east coast, muggy and humid.
NYC is getting Florida weather. Which isn't typical.
Edvard Munch cat, wow
Oh, I forgot to mention , I also made 3D printable models for the game parts if you don't want cardboard ones!
Hum.. there are multiple version of Circuit Python for the feather m0. Will "basic" work with the Feather M0 + WiFi ?
I like the shorter format, it's much easier to digest especially in VOD form, but it's also nice to have longer format streams where we physically build things -- slog it out, through successes and failures.
@haughty quiver nice work! managed to listen to most of the stream. the adabot operation game looks great!
thanks @hard hollow hope you feel better soon. Don't make me operate.
Yeah, this operation game is NOT a license to practice medicine
@waxen thistle I agree ! The short format is good to get the ideas, the long format was good to see how it's build and how I should try to reproduce ๐ Now I actually have to think about it !
Thanks for the feedback @waxen thistle @young adder
@fallow fractal yes, use the basic version for any Feather M0 other thah Feather M0 Express
ok thanks
quick question : can I go back to "Arduino mode" after installing Circuit Python on the Feather M0 ?
@young adder yep, sure can
Cool
Right, one bad point, if I may : it's not easy to install CP on a Feather M0 on Linux ๐
Does it not show up as a USB drive for you when you click the reset button?
(I haven't tried it on Linux)
I'm not there yet ๐ I need to compile bossac to upload the firmware on the board
and of course I'm missing half the dependencies ^^
Right, that's done. Next !
Yeah !!!

Hello World! Chicago here.
Good [insert time of day here] people. ๐
Good Morning @lavish patrol
The music's started.
Howdy guys!
Lookin' forward to seeing you all this Saturday! Want to do an ad-hoc live stream?
HEY! @pearl shoal Hope all is well.
Fair enough!
wireless live stream quality isn't the best
ESP8266 is the only WiFi feather that is even close to easy
My flag would pop up and down constantly.
I had a ride in a Tesla Model X yesterday. ๐
oh we just gotten the autopilot trail - wow surprised how good it handles @lavish patrol
I just redid our door opener with the 8266 - much simpler
I had a ride in a Mack truck. Actually, I drove it for my Road Test and passed. I now have my CDL Class A drivers license. Yup,that's right, I'm going to be a Truck Driver.
Bolt Depot's a great place for nuts/bolts - https://www.boltdepot.com/Metric_machine_screws.aspx?nv=l

Fusion animations are easy and really powerful
Servo is directly wired to one of the ESP8266 PWM pins, right?
I made a video about using a Tap & Die kit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvEG3Q6IoB0
Yes, it's that simple - some of our projects will involve needing a threaded hole in a part. This video shows how to tap a hole in metal or plastic to create...
@pearl shoal I didn't follow that thread...
That was an attempt at a pun. I didn't work, obviously. ๐ฌ
I was trying to figure out that comment ๐
You just have to tap into my sense of humor.
guide will go live later today but the link should be: https://learn.adafruit.com/gmailbox
Probably good to make a reminder to not send the Servo beyond it's limits (10deg-170deg is safe)
What filament is that - the speckles look great
ESP32 still needs lots of love on the Arduino side - you still need to install via GitHub and it's not standard.
So sad
@pearl shoal I was just fooling around with an STM32 Blue Pill recently, which really feels like the wild west ;]
Also, there are MUCH better libraries for the ESP8266 for things like provisioning, AP Mode, etc.
@pearl shoal Vertigo Grey Fillamentum Link: http://a.co/hl5PU7O
Yes, I am unhappy with the state of WiFi boards right now - I have fallen back to ESP8266 or RPi Zero.
looking to stock, the galaxy black is amazing - showing it during my section
(Not @pearl portal's fault)
Big request on all of your demos - please add an example of how to not hard-code your SSID/PWD for each board. I could only get ESP8266 to work well.
Easy to brick a servo by overdriving it
Shouldn't it stay up until the email is read?
Mainly so you can change location and have it let you connect and reset the SSID/PWD
Must be printed on glass?
Powered by a HalloWing?
Worth shining that flashlight at all of your filament. I found about 40% glowed
Yay! I was going to ask for the F3D of that ๐
I got mine yesterday
Turns out it's perfect for some of our projects with the SwitchBoard
@pearl shoal yes, printed on glass
Perhaps a project that uses a cylindrical 3xaaa holder?
@pearl shoal yes, flashing uv lights on filament is actually the first thing we do went getting new stuff
Cool mug.

thoughts?
Would soapy water help?
hmm, with the boat projects were water getting inside, they usually just evaporate after a day
Display aligned mounting this week http://atmakers.org/2018/08/display-aligned-mounting-for-eye-gaze-more/ (Files on Thingivers)
Will @pearl portal carry those?

wow. 2005? surprised MD didn't replace it.
thanks @odd stream and @waxen thistle !
@haughty quiver - does it animate the wand based on sensed motion?
@lavish patrol for sure! I'll need to source them.
(Just joined, hey)
@eager sapphire great idea, maybe a future version? this one isn't fast enough like a DotStar POV so it works pretty well by triggering it and then moving at a constant-ish rate for a few seconds. Motion sensing would make it foolproof!
Cool, version 2.0 for later
Check Spam Folder
Could paint part of a larger image based on orientation, too
@strange mantle it's kinda awesome -- i was researching it and you can see all the different Sony pro gear designs change over the years in their brochures, and out in front is the field recorder NEVER CHANGING!
@haughty quiver guessing the pros were analog hold outs. MD used digital w/ (early gen) compression, sounded a little underwatery

@river peak Lol.
@strange mantle yes -- i can see that.
Yay Fortran!
So, Fortran was preceded by Threetran, Twotran, and Onetran, right? I feel like it's about time for Fivetran
Fivetran is too powerful.

@heavy siren I don't think so. I was 'relatively' young back then, but i think FireWire was more Serial based and was Apple's (?) competitor to USB.

By the way, I passed my Road Test for school last week and now have my CDL Class A drivers license. I'm going to be a truck driver.
Per CBS News (did a quick search) @granite siren, they say you'll be exposed to 0.06 millirem over the course of an hour.
@heavy siren Congrats! I know the stress of the exam must've been driving you crazy.
@waxen thistle Actually it did. The state examiner was a real tough dude. But I did it.

Rasterbats
The ones where JP is illuminated, it's common to use an off-camera flash to give him brightness -- but not the background, so there's sufficient contrast between him and the lightsaber.
The exposures will vary drastically depending on ambient lighting. Probably 4-8 seconds as he mentioned, but low ISO (I'd shoot at 200) to minimize the "film grain" effect.
The aperture I'd stop down to f/8 or f/12, or lower. That's my best ability to control exposure if it's getting too blown out.
For a very dark, contrasty background -- shooting at f/22 gives the darkest image. But some lenses might use a bladed-aperture resulting in a "starburst effect" on single point light sources (like street lamps).
In other words, it's all a bunch of tradeoffs -- and takes a lot of tweaking, practice shots, and knowing your gear.
making spinning paintstick so you could make holographic image
๐
Yes, it looks pretty good.
Skull-er-riffic
need cross bones
Deathly good.
โ
I'm sure it'd be given two thumbs up by Wednesday Addams....and one thumb up by Thing.
If you want to practice long exposures, all you need is a camera with exposure controls -- a DSLR or equivalent (I'd avoid a cell phone or an older point & shot, usually they give poor results).
And a tripod. That's a great starting point to practice, get a feel for the process. You can selectively highlight things with a flashlight -- literally "light painting".
Excellent project and build. Like the use of the building supply yardstick. I wonder if they have meter sticks...
if you have motor and but LED stick in it so that motor go center then it looks nice as you could even have holographic 3D images
Yeah, to build on what JP mentioned regarding focus -- for those f/stops you'll be using (f/8 to f/22), unless you are really close, set the focus control to manual and set the focus to infinity. You'll be just fine.
Thanks!
@haughty quiver Thanks again for another awesome show!
...and nice title card displaying the effect, too!

I presume the code for this light stick project will be in the guide... Yes/No?
@granite siren @waxen thistle yes, I train in aerial straps at a circus school here in LA. Dying to do some long exposure LED photos on straps sometime :)
I would like to make a light stick to fit in the wheel of my car and go down the road at night drawing images as it rotated.
I wonder if that would be illegal.
@waxen thistle you nailed it -- ISO around 200, f-stop around f/16, exposures from 4" to 29"
@waxen thistle yes, Joel was shooting w a Leica M240 so I think he has a bladed aperture and got that sweet starburst!

@vernal mulch and the speaker is the little speaker looking thing on the right ๐
Don't forget to remember John Park's Workshop tomorrow at 3pm central. ๐
Nice closing track, Phil
@burnt stirrup you can try asking over in #digi-key-discord also
Wilco. Thanks lots.
np. good luck. it's out there. just a matter of finding it.
Just sent in my order for over $200 of stuff. Adafruit parts are so cool and addictive.
Good shows. Some nice new products.
@odd stream Got two of the electromagnets and that flex board for some cool ideas I have.
@heavy siren I'm curious about that board. Easy custom shapes could be very useful. Flex as well, but maybe not quite as much. Then again, the combination could be quite useful.
@odd stream Yes, I know, thinking of variable current to closely positioned electromagnets attached to the flex board for movement.
@heavy siren Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGGw74iWTNI
So far in my pcb motor projects the magnet was being actuated by the fixed stator. With this flex pcb i have managed to do the opposite, to have a fixed magn...
@heavy siren Sort of the other way around
@odd stream There ya go. Very cool video. But, yes, that's what I was sort of thinking about. Now, what the movement will do or how it will be applied is the next thing to think about. Like maybe drumsticks for playing on my 10 piece kit of Pearls. Just a thought.
Thanks to Phil and Ladyada for answering my question from the Youtube chat while I tried to figure out the reason I couldn't claim my Discord account. Got it squared away.
Hay guys, is there a way to look up previous advice or replys that I've gotten on Adafruit discord?
@ivory kiln That's a very good question. All I may suggest is using the search box upstairs on the right corner of Discord.
Ya, tried that but couldn't get it to work
Ah, well, don't know if there is a history channel for that sort of thing.
@ivory kiln why didn't search work?
You might try asking @rancid stone to make a Bot for that. He's very good at that sort of thing.
Though that that was one of the benefits of Discord was that it all was stored, and retreavable
Hay @strange mantle , I couldn't remember specific wording from the advise so I search 'dao20' hoping that it would pull up all posts that I've posted. But just pulled up 3 different dao20 accounts
there are some specific filter options
@ivory kiln If you include the numbers, (Ie, #1234) it'll limit to just you
and would only let me see a couple mentions of dao20
try from:Dao20
ok
Well gentlmen, the wife has popped the cork on a nice bottle of wine. Time to play gratefull husband. MAKE a nice day/evening. Hope to see you all tomorrow for John Park's Workshop at 3pm central time. Until then, this is Chicago signing off.
see ya @heavy siren
as you type in your user name, it should show a list, you can select which one is you if there are multiple same user names
Good Night @haughty quiver
ok got it thanks guys. ๐
Glad to hear it @ivory kiln .
mentions: is what you want to find where someone @'d you
Ahhh, ok gotcha. Thanks @strange mantle
That's really got it. ๐
Is @haughty quiver still on?
hello
If so have you done a, ๐ Hi John, makecode on motor controling yet?
a makecode minute?
Yup
(I'm stalling while I check, I can't remember...)
Lol, no worries. I'm patient.

Awesome. Gonna go watch them both n learn. ๐ Thanks John. ๐ Keep an eye open for my open source powerchair. That what this going to be used for. ๐
@haughty quiver
Right on!
@haughty quiver Have you gotten used to talking to a camera yet?
I don't talk to cameras -- I talk to viewers! The camera just happens to be in between. :)
LOL! that is an awesome way to look at it! very awesome sir! very awesome!
Reason I asked is cause I'm try to get used to it, but I'm going to start looking at it like you. ๐ Much better way. ๐
will the code that I do & learn in make code carry over to a feather? Ie, want to use a Cricket but not a CPX, want to use a feather & cricket as that's what the full size CircuitPython powered power chair will basically have.
@ivory kiln in general, yes. there may be some differences due to the differences in the hardware, but the programming concepts will be the same.
Very awesome. Thanks @strange mantle
A batch of HalloWing boards is in stock: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3900

Excited to be here. The project preview looked very cool.

3U rackmountable hardware? Oh dear, that's starting to sound like my "work".
you really need some theme muic to go with that opening video ๐
Ignore the cereal blocks. Captain Crunch has no place here.
