@trail zephyr i was probably around your age when i first got sciatica. it doesn't happen that much for me, but just last week...
wow 4 heart attacks. I'm sure you are cherishing the time you have.
Oh yeah, they don't scare me anymore.
don't get complacent now
I spend 100% of my time "Pursuing Happiness". ERIOD.
good
my dad had a heart attack a year ago...was scary for me because I never had to go to the hospital for my parents before
@little oak just remember....It could always be worse
i have to remind my se;f that everyday
@strong spear Yup, your right. 2 herniated L4's, Cateracted eys, bacterial ulcer and tinnitus.
It puts things in prospective.
@hard hollow That.. that was cool as hell
@fickle umbra It was all PT's fault ๐
@hard hollow That.. that sounds like I story I need to hear
Admitting I had a lot of fun learning how to design a deck in CAD
@hard hollow The Ruiz brothers are always on point!!
OMG that lantern is pretty.....
@hard hollow Oooh my Prusa wants to print that lantern!
I think it was one of those idea's Phil thought was unique and playful. Phil is a skateboarder and likes the culture so "why not".
yea, that's cool @hard hollow
The Prusa MK2 is very nice.
@strong spear I hear good things about those!
@hard hollow I received mine about 6 weeks ago......Very nice..Close to my UM2+
what was that thing they just showed that allows servos and neopixel control?
@hard hollow I think you guys would be impressed. But, you guys are the experts. I just had one issue with it which was easily fixable.
@strong spear that's great to hear! More and more low-price printers are really getting good.
@flint beacon https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/07/03/breakout-mini-microbit_edu-microbit-microbitlove-microbitmonday/
thank you @fickle umbra
@flint beacon Yer welcome ๐
@hard hollow I also ordered the Creality CR10. It's in transit from China.
I got a uArm coming Friday. It's a desktop robotic arm
@strong spear never with compiling, sometimes on upload if i have the serial monitor already open
I am sooooo stoked....
Ahhhh, now I understand a GitHub issue....
let me know how it is @little oak !
Aye, @little oak
@lament flume ok, my console was closed. Its a weird problem.
The uArm Swift Pro is way cool.
don't fall for them phil!
It will 3D print, Laser engrave, see with openMV and lots more.
haha foxes love fake cheese
Foxes are freaking adorable.
@little oak I bought a couple of toy cars to to robotify a while back
I bought motor controler chips from china
took over 90 days to get to me :/
Will get back to it at some stage
but a lot of other things on my plate first
Congrats, @little oak for calling in!
HOLY COW, I got through on the phone.
awesome
cool! @little oak
Busy night @little oak
Hey, I used to live in Chicago
we heard you
you may as well move to New York your spending so much time talking to Adafruit
WOW, this Adafruit is the absolute BEST.
ah you are the guy with the tape thing that was cool
@regal garnet is that where you moved to ca;ifornia from?
you mentioned new in ca with garbage reminder
@flint beacon No, I was actually in New Jersey for a while
ah
I get around. LOL
haha
i gotta take a break but will continue private discussion shortly @regal garnet
What a great evening I had. Show and Tell, Phone call, I actually spoke to Ladyada.
cooolest @little oak
This is one for the books.
@little oak What a great night for you! ๐
Ikr
@little oak were you caller from Chicago area?
Yes, I was
Awesome, nice job
Cool
They only use Fortran in Chicago. LOL
Thanks eh?
waiiiit i hear canadian in there
@little oak dont you mean don't tell anyone aboot it. lol
ha ha
Ok, Ada-Crew, I've been in the office for 14 hours. Time to pack up and walk home. ๐
Hahahahaha. It's just a trail through the swamp back to the apartment. ๐

didn't know about discord an hour ago
I gotta go people, good night, stay safe and most of all, MAKE a great day.
is glitter being ditched now for this?
ok back to the real world, MAKE it count folks.
good night @little oak
@ocean musk I'm still on gitter but this is nice and general
I like how webhooks make it easy to get notified about all of the adafruit activity
bye @pliant surge
@little oak Good night Northern
For the special Show n Tell next week at 7p, is the regular Show n Tell still going to be on at the regular 7:30p time or not?
The special show n tell that they talked about tonight
look at the show at 11:17, thats where they mention it
ok, will do. I pinged phil on internal chat about it too but they may have something afterwards
@ivory kiln my guess would be that show and tell will be an hour long
Do you think putting my Pi in a regular PC case would be a bit much?
Like, one of the cheap ones you would buy off of amazon.
Possibly a bit much, yeah.
I think it would be a bit sillier if I did that, but with a Pi Zero.
All that space that would be left unused.
I think the Pi would enjoy all the room. Lots of space for peripherals.
idea are good...
Yep.
I just thought about it when I was searching for cheap PC parts.
Would be a lot of space for cooling.
Depending on it's intended use, just throw it in a normal Raspberry Pi case.
Sure, why not. A case for embedded systems is always a challenge.
My 3D printer solved a lot of those issues thou...
I'm mostly concerned about the thing burning itself out. It is freaking HOT over where I live, right now.
Ahhhh, good point. Heat.
@remote delta unless you're doing something hardcore, I doubt you'd fry it unless you wrapped it in packing foam... it's designed to throttle itself
Get some heat sink, throw it in a standard Pi case and it should be fine. They make Pi cases you can add a tiny fan to
I'm using it for things like Youtube, Discord, Diep, and a few other things.
I have a heat sink, And even then, the Pi sometimes complains about over heating.
Oh god, I just thought about how small the Pi would be compared to the case, and I think it's hilarious.
Ok, now add a power brick, USB hub, display, GPIO stuff if any... Things add up.
Nevermind. Much bigger now that I think about that stuff.
It could ALL be contained within a reasonable PC desktop case.
You got to write them down ASAP
Even the official Raspberrypi.org case has no fan.
Wait they're back. Gonna open that Libre office.
I have overclocked several Raspberry Pi's to the max, and ran N64 games using Retropie... Still has never overheated.
Mine starts to heat up like mad after ten minutes of Mario 64.
It's not over clocked.
It's always going to be warm/hot. Are you monitoring the CPU temp at all? Or just hovering your hand over it?
How does the Pi complain about heating up. I don't use one so I am simply curious.
It will usually either lock up, or power off if it gets too hot.
It won't just burst into flames. Lol
Really? Wow, POR's suck...
POR's?
If you use the official Raspbian Pixel image, it works fine. If you use something like Retropie, it'll lock up once in awhile during heavy emulation.
@remote delta if you want to see something that will both look nice and monitor your Pi temperature, check out Conky: https://youtu.be/OB7Nfe_05h4
Hi! How to add a desktop system monitor widget to your desktop. this video was made possible because of your request through comments. thanks for the view!! ...
I've used Conky in other Linux distros, just not on my Pi. This guy has a Conky rc file he configured specifically for the Pi.
@NorthernPike#5809 great job on the stream (I'm just catching up on YouTube)
I think the pi will also slow down the clock speed when getting hot. Some laptops do that too. Thats probably why frames get dropped.
That's actually a smart tactic.
@rapid hornet Yeah, I believe so.
@Peppercatt, if you follow the instructions in the video, you should be all good. There's not much configuration required.
@remote delta*
Haha your handle from the YouTube broadcasts was saved in auto correct.
What does that mean?

Love the idea.
๐
I do lots (and lots) of Linux work. Lots of languages, environments, abstraction levels. Many Linux users can't spell I2C ๐
So a library/module that exposes the most basic Feather data (the ones from the board itself, not wings) would be very helpful.
That's great @pearl shoal !
I have been tinkering with both Arduino based projects and Raspberry Pis for a while now. As a hobbyist, I'm not an engineer or pro
It can build on top of i2c of course as far as the SAMD is concerned. But having a Bash script that read /proc/feather/a0 to read an analog input value would be exactly what the Raspberry Pi is lacking..
@pearl shoal I want to bring the circuitpython libraries to CPython at some point
I know enough about Linux to get my hands dirty
To turn on a digital output -> $ echo '1' > /proc/feather/d1
thats a lot trickier I think because it relies on kernel hacking
Sort of - it requires a kernel module
That gets loaded after the kernel boots. It would rely on the i2c kernel module and read using i2c, but expose those "files" in the /proc filesystem
I'll tell you what - if she makes the i2c interface on the SAMD and exposes it, I'll take a stab at the kernel module (I've done one before)
@pearl shoal does that hold true if I do it? ๐
bye @pearl shoal !
@rapid hornet @pearl shoal think Circuitpython with Cython
for Linux Feathers life here is Ubuntu for Windows 10 and Suse I try to look at it https://www.microsoft.com/store/apps/9nblggh4msv6
@shell mason The Linux on the feathers would probably be some extremely cut down distro designed for embedded systems. There most likely will be no GUI.
Ubuntu would be a good starter distro for people to familiarize themselves with using Linux however.
@distant harbor Fedora and Suse are also to windows store as support WSL
Just over an hour until the bonus Show and Tell!
bonus? There's a bonus??
yup, there is a TE racecar one a half an hour earlier than the normal one
Hoping to get in on that: all setup for a live demo of the robot chassis kit turned into a powerchair ๐
awesome @pearl shoal !
Looking forward to the S&T link ๐
Nothing like a bit of stress on a Wed evening
Two minutes to air & no link? Is the live Show & Tell after a video or something?

Yup! Seems like an awesome toy too.
i going to off my desktop so i go silent

i going to be youtube chat
k, I'm there too
@pearl shoal someone in youttube chat would like to know if your code is public somewhere
@rapid hornet Do you know if PT is monitoring Discord for questions during Ask an Engineer? Or do we need to do Twitch chat?
looks like hes still in the hangout and paying attention
@pearl shoal The work you folks do is awesome.
@analog acorn I'm not exactly sure. He is @open girder so maybe.
Ok, thanks!
I think Phil has mentioned this earlier -- there needs to be a multi-platform streaming client, a single dashboard/pane-of-glass for chat and video ๐
I feel bad for him, he's got goodness-knows-how-many chat clients open at once

CircuitFruit would be cool as all fruits connect circuitpython boards
FruitSalad ๐
That was awesome - two projects in one night ๐
@rapid hornet when you described what you were working on, first thing that went in mah head was a wall of all adafruit boards
yes, its gonna happen @blazing atlas
All in all you're just another fruit on the wall.
We need more STEM education. guitar riff
could be a functional art installation
think you have Adafruit looking hub so you hook circuitpython boards to it and boom Continues integration tester and hub have pi in it

DHL? where are you located?
@distant harbor Or they can do both ๐
hi
This is great for quick answers, and the forums are great for archival of solutions
This is true @waxen thistle
and of course, with the historical logging on here, there's a bit of functional overlap. That's awesome
Hello everyone!

Hello!
Hello!
haha, thanks @distant harbor
@strong spear just checked my last order, was shipped on the 6th of june -- arrived day after

@waxen thistle Looks like it is still going on.
@blazing atlas I was in seattle 2007 and 2008
pretty graphs!
@blazing atlas Yeah, I graduated college in 2007, and started in the seattle area that summer...stayed there for 2 years, then left for a better opportunity back home on the east coast.
I do miss certain things from out there though
I really like this data analysis stuff.
@glossy field let me know if you visit

@rapid hornet Are we going to see you on Ask an Engineer?
@waxen thistle its changed a lot since, havent been back for a year now -- miss the fooods

@blazing atlas yup, last year around maker faire

hi @noble grove !
@rapid hornet Will do.
I have one of those distance sensors, and before this was a call-to-action, I was debating on making something similar -- a couple (or more) wifi controlled cars for racing on twitch. Couple of viewers doing what they can, but the delay could be a challenge.
@rapid hornet Ah my bad. @glossy glacier sorry, I thought you were asking about the NYC maker faire

@rapid hornet @waxen thistle Well, a truck and trailer will solve that...

You can take the DOE nuclear physics and NRC radiotion worker courses online for free. When you know the dangers, you can manage them.
This is true.
hi y'all
this show is particularly interesting as i have been working on the motor on my bicycle, but i don't know much about motors/controllers
actually not working on the motor itself, but the wiring between the motor, throttle and controller
i apparently destroyed my throttle and determined after deconstructing it, the sensor needs replacemenet
only because i broke one of the pins off
bicycle? moped?
bicycle
i have an old hub motor/controller/throttle a friend gave me which i installed on my bike. it works sometimes, but i've had to make many repairs to it over time
there's only two wires coming from the motor and four from the controller
it is very appropriate, phil!

Has anyone here had trouble with Cyclone chips getting zapped JTAG pins?
I am using a cheap "USB Blaster" clone, but they've been fine for years.
cyclone like fpga?
Yeah. Cyclone III. Now the chip will configure (apparently), but then Quartus / SignalTap says it can't access the SigTap instance on the chip?
I don't think it's configuring properly either, so I'm suspecting one of the pins has been zapped.
ah bummer
It has happened before, so I started adding series resistors on all JTAG lines, but I forgot to do that on this board. ๐ฆ
writing code to use a samd21 as a usb->jtag bridge is on my list
It's definitely worth adding at least some resistors, and possibly some clamp diodes to all JTAG lines tbh.
k, good to know
I had it happen on a previous board where it zapped the internal ESD clamp diode in the Cyc III as I plugged in the USB Blaster from the PC. I should have known. lol
The logic timings do often change when you re-compile though, so it's possible it's a marginal timing issue.
I've only played around with an ice40
You can lower the JTAG TCK freq on newer versions of Quartus, but only version 13 still has support for the older Cyc I,II,III chips.
The crazy thing is, even the latest version of Quartus doesn't appear to add much, yet the old Quartus 13 SP1 still supports the newer Cyclone V.
yeah, engineers like to reimplement things ๐

@fallow fractal the drone can't record and stream at the same time apparently
@blazing atlas nope, they are from pimpmykeyboard

I was going to order another Razer keyboard but now I'm thinking I should build one....
๐ very expensive
Have you seen how expensive a Razer is? ๐ And if I make it myself I can literally make it any way I want.
If I didnt already have heaps of keyboards, id build one.. looks nice!
... but a custom one specifically for when i do design work is a nice thought :>>
Charley Shattuck built a steno keyboard from a Feather M0.
I have a number pad peripheral that I want to stuff a pro micro into
I'd add some dials and knobs on mine, what do you call those knobs you can use as a push button too?
Rotary encoders often have buttons I think
@lament flume they keys from signature plastics (pimpmykeyboard) are actually made in the same state that I live in
next to photoshop i prolly use lightroom the most out of any other application.. would be so handy to have those to dial-in settings
@blazing atlas its doable ๐

Hey <@&327289013561982976> ! Remember when we were talking about the whole Arduino open source or not shenanigans?
Well Arduino cc just released a subscription based IDE for Chrome OS... $1/m
So that essentially targets non profits and schools who use Chrome OS devices to keep costs down... So why the heck would Arduino CC target them for a subscription fee?
Just glad you guys are around to offer Arduino alternatives.
*End rant
In case the topic comes up again today during ask an engineer.
@open girder @rapid hornet Can I make a request for tonight's AAE? Can we get an Arduino drama update? @distant harbor brought it up and I'm interested too.
@analog acorn I'll mention it to Phil
Here's the post from Arduino cc: https://blog.arduino.cc/2017/07/17/arduino-create-comes-to-chrome-os-devices/
That posted about the self adjusting wire strippers prompts me to (finally) get one. I have the cheapest possible kind of strippers which I've used my whole life. Time to treat myself ๐
I bought one recently and it seems good, but probably too heavy
It terms of stripping thinner wires
Ah. One thing I like about my el cheapo is it is very thin and fits easily in a pocket or etc with other tools (wire cutters, forces or etc)
Well, you have a big tool there...
Yea, I checked that link and was surprised at the low cost. I may get one for use in major project and keep my small one for one-off stuff
Even it was a step up, for the longest time I just used a pocket knife to do my wire stripping
Some of my wires got a bit bloody that way ๐
zooms in
I'll make some popcorn for the arduino drama update :)

Adam - seems like Hangouts was attenuating you kind of randomly, maybe you can turn down gain on mic a bit?
Nothing like a bit of ACDC on a Yukalelel
That kid was pretty good...
@pliant surge thats odd. My mic gain was way low and I was not peakin on my monitor.
So was that adafruits first copyright strike?

@harsh bone Yeah, just a cheap lav mic.
Just caught the end, but good job

@lament flume I had a friend who liked to call people's cell phones when they were speaking in front of an audience. So distracting @rapid hornet seems like fair game. ๐

I just ready taht someone used a raspberry pi as a temperature controller for a meat smoker....it's so simple, and yet....so needed.
@waxen thistle I'd like one too
@open girder to reference someone on reddit its "/u/ptorrene" not "@ptorrene"
I literally have never been to that sub reddit before and I dont want to go back
I need to start a GoFundMe for myself so I can get a 3D printer. Title it "Kurt needs a 3D printer, because reasons"

its a compressor @fallow fractal
There are so many alternatives to Arduino right now.... They're kind of shooting themselves in the foot.
@rapid hornet compressor halted. ๐
yup yup ๐
cool @lament flume
I haven't bought anything under an Arduino brand in years
High priced and under-featured
Plus a bad set of karma
What I need more than a probe is some nice weather
here in NYC, it's in the low-mid 90s and really nasty humidity
BBQ is ireland is a rare enough thing
It's hot AF here in Michigan too
We also call it dfferently to you guys
@lament flume What is it called there?
What we call "BBQ" is what you call Grilling
what we call Grilling you call Broiling
BBQ implies smoke.
and What you call BBQ we would call smoking
yeah
I'm down with the American lingo ๐
Yeah, most people here in the states think the same. Unless you've had real smoked meat, most BBQ is grilling + slather on a mollasses sauce until it's burned off.
#weber4Life
BBQs are so much more expensive here than there too
like a Webel Silver or whatever you would call it
is 2-3 times the price
@hard hollow Did you guys check the runtime on those? I'm really kinda curious how long the battery would last
That video was really good. Amazing how two glowing eyes says HUMAN HERE in the dark.
There's an amazing bbq place in NYC -- maybe @rapid hornet would like to know (and pass it along to anyone at adafruit). It's John Brown's Smokehouse in Long Island City. It's a bit of a haul on the E train over to Queens, but man....it's worth it.
Kansas City style smoked meats. Get the burnt ends and pulled pork. Cornbread and mac and cheese. drool
thats closer to where maker faire nyc is right?
eh, about 1/3rd of the way there
Aw, man, you're making me hungry!
Don't tell me that...
makerfaire is WAY out in queens, john browns is right across the river
ah
Im not sure its even possible to get low and slow bbq in Ireland
No where near me anywaya
@lament flume Gotta do it yourself then ๐
That's why i bought an electric smoker....back home in Pennsylvania, there's no good BBQ around. Most is grilled + sauce. No. Just....no. That's not proper bbq.
@lament flume Cloudy? Rainy?
@lament flume I'll trade some rain for the 30C days we're having...
Bit hot for me
New new new!
Yeah we would use Celsius

@glossy glacier That was so freaking cool!
Nice work @glossy glacier
@glossy glacier Awesome work man, you're so enthusastic with this!
It is so hot in my shop. I am drawing about 25 amps right now, the majority of that is being turned into heat...
Next step is adding a plug for my fan...
@glossy glacier which part(s) of the microscope draw the most current?
lol, priorities. SEM then fan
@paper peak The vacuum pumps and water chiller draws a lot. The rotary vain pump is not bad, but the high vacuum oil diffusion pump is literaly a big heater!
it'll be nice in the winter
so, everything, except maybe the actual electron source !
@paper peak That is only about 3 amps...
@paper peak The rest of the scope does about 7.5.
My water chiller is supper crazy in efficent right now. That alone does 10 amps.

And the Intel news! Did you read PT's blog post on it this morning?
@glossy glacier Also, as far as I know, the other people who own a scope are Ben Kravsno with his JEOL and DIY scope (http://benkrasnow.blogspot.com/), Sam Zelof (http://sam.zeloof.xyz/), Bob who owns a ISI super IIIA like me (http://members.tm.net/lapointe2/Scanning_Electron_Microscope.html), John Mcmaster who also has a ISI super IIIA (http://uvicrec.blogspot.com/2014/04/a-new-toy-arrives.html), Jerry Biehler with a Hitachi S-450 (https://hackaday.io/project/3281-hitachi-s-450-scanning-electron-microscope), my contact in sweeden with another ISI super IIIA, Andrew Back with some cambridge instruments scope (https://twitter.com/9600?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author) and a couple of others that I am probably forgetting.
@analog acorn Something about Intel not making dev boards anymore
Not exactly. More that they're not making Arduino compatible boards anymore.
Ahhhh okay
The blog post that Phil wrote had an interesting viewpoint...
Was my audio better this week?
Yeah!
