I'm glad you're still here, @little oak

flint beacon
#

@trail zephyr i was probably around your age when i first got sciatica. it doesn't happen that much for me, but just last week...

strong spear
#

wow 4 heart attacks. I'm sure you are cherishing the time you have.

little oak
#

Oh yeah, they don't scare me anymore.

flint beacon
#

don't get complacent now

little oak
#

I spend 100% of my time "Pursuing Happiness". ERIOD.

flint beacon

trail zephyr
#

my dad had a heart attack a year ago...was scary for me because I never had to go to the hospital for my parents before

strong spear
#

@little oak just remember....It could always be worse

flint beacon
#

i have to remind my se;f that everyday

little oak
#

@strong spear Yup, your right. 2 herniated L4's, Cateracted eys, bacterial ulcer and tinnitus.

strong spear
#

It puts things in prospective.

fickle umbra
#

@hard hollow That.. that was cool as hell

hard hollow
#

@fickle umbra It was all PT's fault ๐Ÿ˜‰

fickle umbra
#

@hard hollow That.. that sounds like I story I need to hear

hard hollow
#

Admitting I had a lot of fun learning how to design a deck in CAD

strong spear
#

@hard hollow The Ruiz brothers are always on point!!

fickle umbra
#

OMG that lantern is pretty.....

analog acorn
#

@hard hollow Oooh my Prusa wants to print that lantern!

hard hollow
#

I think it was one of those idea's Phil thought was unique and playful. Phil is a skateboarder and likes the culture so "why not".

flint beacon
#

yea, that's cool @hard hollow

strong spear
#

The Prusa MK2 is very nice.

hard hollow
#

@strong spear I hear good things about those!

strong spear
#

@hard hollow I received mine about 6 weeks ago......Very nice..Close to my UM2+

flint beacon
#

what was that thing they just showed that allows servos and neopixel control?

strong spear
#

@hard hollow I think you guys would be impressed. But, you guys are the experts. I just had one issue with it which was easily fixable.

hard hollow
#

@strong spear that's great to hear! More and more low-price printers are really getting good.

fickle umbra
flint beacon
#

thank you @fickle umbra

fickle umbra
#

@flint beacon Yer welcome ๐Ÿ˜‰

strong spear
#

@hard hollow I also ordered the Creality CR10. It's in transit from China.

I got a uArm coming Friday. It's a desktop robotic arm

lament flume

I am sooooo stoked....

analog acorn

Will do @rapid hornet

analog acorn

Aye, @little oak

strong spear
#

@lament flume ok, my console was closed. Its a weird problem.

little oak
#

The uArm Swift Pro is way cool.

flint beacon
#

don't fall for them phil!

little oak

It will 3D print, Laser engrave, see with openMV and lots more.

flint beacon

haha foxes love fake cheese

remote delta

Foxes are freaking adorable.

lament flume
#

@little oak I bought a couple of toy cars to to robotify a while back

#

I bought motor controler chips from china

#

took over 90 days to get to me :/

#

Will get back to it at some stage

but a lot of other things on my plate first

regal garnet

analog acorn
#

Ok, Ada-Crew, I've been in the office for 14 hours. Time to pack up and walk home. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

rapid hornet

@analog acorn don't get stuck in traffic ๐Ÿ˜›

analog acorn

Hahahahaha. It's just a trail through the swamp back to the apartment. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

didn't know about discord an hour ago

little oak
#

I gotta go people, good night, stay safe and most of all, MAKE a great day.

ocean musk
#

is glitter being ditched now for this?

pliant surge
#

ok back to the real world, MAKE it count folks.

rapid hornet
#

good night @little oak

#

@ocean musk I'm still on gitter but this is nice and general

#

I like how webhooks make it easy to get notified about all of the adafruit activity

#

bye @pliant surge

strong spear
#

@little oak Good night Northern

ivory kiln
#

For the special Show n Tell next week at 7p, is the regular Show n Tell still going to be on at the regular 7:30p time or not?

strong spear
#

@ivory kiln What

#

s @ivory kiln What's the special show and tell about?

ivory kiln
#

The special show n tell that they talked about tonight

#

look at the show at 11:17, thats where they mention it

rapid hornet
#

ok, will do. I pinged phil on internal chat about it too but they may have something afterwards

#

@ivory kiln my guess would be that show and tell will be an hour long

remote delta
#

Do you think putting my Pi in a regular PC case would be a bit much?

fickle umbra
#

define "regular"

#

a pi in a full atx tower... is a bit comical to think about

remote delta
#

Like, one of the cheap ones you would buy off of amazon.

fickle umbra
#

Possibly a bit much, yeah.

remote delta
#

I think it would be a bit sillier if I did that, but with a Pi Zero.

#

All that space that would be left unused.

little oak
#

I think the Pi would enjoy all the room. Lots of space for peripherals.

remote delta
#

Yep.

#

Hmm... I think I now have a few ideas.

little oak
#

idea are good...

remote delta
#

Yep.

#

I just thought about it when I was searching for cheap PC parts.

#

Would be a lot of space for cooling.

distant harbor
#

Depending on it's intended use, just throw it in a normal Raspberry Pi case.

little oak
#

Sure, why not. A case for embedded systems is always a challenge.

#

My 3D printer solved a lot of those issues thou...

remote delta
#

I'm mostly concerned about the thing burning itself out. It is freaking HOT over where I live, right now.

little oak
#

Ahhhh, good point. Heat.

fickle umbra
#

@remote delta unless you're doing something hardcore, I doubt you'd fry it unless you wrapped it in packing foam... it's designed to throttle itself

distant harbor
#

Get some heat sink, throw it in a standard Pi case and it should be fine. They make Pi cases you can add a tiny fan to

remote delta
#

I'm using it for things like Youtube, Discord, Diep, and a few other things.

#

I have a heat sink, And even then, the Pi sometimes complains about over heating.

#

Oh god, I just thought about how small the Pi would be compared to the case, and I think it's hilarious.

little oak
#

Ok, now add a power brick, USB hub, display, GPIO stuff if any... Things add up.

remote delta
#

Nevermind. Much bigger now that I think about that stuff.

little oak
#

It could ALL be contained within a reasonable PC desktop case.

remote delta
#

Hmm... I think I have a few ideas.

#

And now they're gone.

little oak
#

You got to write them down ASAP

distant harbor
remote delta
#

Wait they're back. Gonna open that Libre office.

distant harbor
#

I have overclocked several Raspberry Pi's to the max, and ran N64 games using Retropie... Still has never overheated.

remote delta
#

Mine starts to heat up like mad after ten minutes of Mario 64.

#

It's not over clocked.

distant harbor
#

It's always going to be warm/hot. Are you monitoring the CPU temp at all? Or just hovering your hand over it?

little oak
#

How does the Pi complain about heating up. I don't use one so I am simply curious.

distant harbor
#

It will usually either lock up, or power off if it gets too hot.

#

It won't just burst into flames. Lol

little oak
#

Really? Wow, POR's suck...

distant harbor
#

POR's?

little oak
#

Power On Reset.

#

Bottom line, that's what happens.

distant harbor
#

If you use the official Raspbian Pixel image, it works fine. If you use something like Retropie, it'll lock up once in awhile during heavy emulation.

#

I've used Conky in other Linux distros, just not on my Pi. This guy has a Conky rc file he configured specifically for the Pi.

lament flume
#

@NorthernPike#5809 great job on the stream (I'm just catching up on YouTube)

remote delta
#

Conky looks nice. Thanks for sending it.

#

I don't understand it at all.

rapid hornet
#

I think the pi will also slow down the clock speed when getting hot. Some laptops do that too. Thats probably why frames get dropped.

remote delta
#

That's actually a smart tactic.

distant harbor
#

@rapid hornet Yeah, I believe so.

#

@Peppercatt, if you follow the instructions in the video, you should be all good. There's not much configuration required.

#

@remote delta*

#

Haha your handle from the YouTube broadcasts was saved in auto correct.

remote delta
#

What does that mean?

solid wyvernBOT
fallow fractal
#

@rapid hornet looks like this double posted

#

Might want to look into that

remote delta
#

Oh my.

fallow fractal
rapid hornet
#

@fallow fractal The double post must be a bug with IFTTT. The circuitpython notifications are intentionally both places.

solid wyvernBOT
rapid hornet
#

live stream is going ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

distant harbor
#

So yeahhhh, Linux Feather board line.

#

Pretty awesome idea by Lady Ada

pearl shoal
#

Love the idea.

rapid hornet
#

๐Ÿ˜„

pearl shoal
#

I do lots (and lots) of Linux work. Lots of languages, environments, abstraction levels. Many Linux users can't spell I2C ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

#

So a library/module that exposes the most basic Feather data (the ones from the board itself, not wings) would be very helpful.

distant harbor
#

That's great @pearl shoal !

#

I have been tinkering with both Arduino based projects and Raspberry Pis for a while now. As a hobbyist, I'm not an engineer or pro

pearl shoal
#

It can build on top of i2c of course as far as the SAMD is concerned. But having a Bash script that read /proc/feather/a0 to read an analog input value would be exactly what the Raspberry Pi is lacking..

rapid hornet
#

@pearl shoal I want to bring the circuitpython libraries to CPython at some point

distant harbor
#

I know enough about Linux to get my hands dirty

pearl shoal
#

To turn on a digital output -> $ echo '1' > /proc/feather/d1

rapid hornet
#

thats a lot trickier I think because it relies on kernel hacking

pearl shoal
#

Sort of - it requires a kernel module

#

That gets loaded after the kernel boots. It would rely on the i2c kernel module and read using i2c, but expose those "files" in the /proc filesystem

#

I'll tell you what - if she makes the i2c interface on the SAMD and exposes it, I'll take a stab at the kernel module (I've done one before)

rapid hornet
#

@pearl shoal does that hold true if I do it? ๐Ÿ˜‰

pearl shoal
#

Sure!

#

(Gotta run!)

rapid hornet
#

bye @pearl shoal !

shell mason
#

@rapid hornet @pearl shoal think Circuitpython with Cython

distant harbor
#

@shell mason The Linux on the feathers would probably be some extremely cut down distro designed for embedded systems. There most likely will be no GUI.

#

Ubuntu would be a good starter distro for people to familiarize themselves with using Linux however.

shell mason
#

@distant harbor Fedora and Suse are also to windows store as support WSL

rapid hornet
#

Just over an hour until the bonus Show and Tell!

regal garnet
#

bonus? There's a bonus??

rapid hornet
#

yup, there is a TE racecar one a half an hour earlier than the normal one

pearl shoal
#

Hoping to get in on that: all setup for a live demo of the robot chassis kit turned into a powerchair ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

rapid hornet
#

awesome @pearl shoal !

pearl shoal
#

Looking forward to the S&T link ๐Ÿ˜‰

rapid hornet
#

my demo is failing! gotta fix it in the next 40 minutes

#

my rpi is hating me

pearl shoal
#

Nothing like a bit of stress on a Wed evening

#

Two minutes to air & no link? Is the live Show & Tell after a video or something?

rapid hornet
#

there is a video from jp

#

I'll post it when I see one

pearl shoal
#

Ack - missed the link!

shell mason
#

@rapid hornet no pressure as you didnt get demo working in digital signal processing

rapid hornet
shell mason
#

you have your pi project working @rapid hornet

rapid hornet
#

think so @shell mason

#

thats so cool. barbie has a power chair!

waxen thistle
#

That's a great idea to prototype controls for a larger scale item

rapid hornet
#

Yup! Seems like an awesome toy too.

shell mason
#

i going to off my desktop so i go silent

rapid hornet
#

ok @shell mason

shell mason
#

i going to be youtube chat

rapid hornet
#

k, I'm there too

#

@pearl shoal someone in youttube chat would like to know if your code is public somewhere

analog acorn
#

@rapid hornet Do you know if PT is monitoring Discord for questions during Ask an Engineer? Or do we need to do Twitch chat?

rapid hornet
#

looks like hes still in the hangout and paying attention

waxen thistle
#

@pearl shoal The work you folks do is awesome.

rapid hornet
#

@analog acorn I'm not exactly sure. He is @open girder so maybe.

analog acorn
#

Ok, thanks!

waxen thistle
#

I think Phil has mentioned this earlier -- there needs to be a multi-platform streaming client, a single dashboard/pane-of-glass for chat and video ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

#

I feel bad for him, he's got goodness-knows-how-many chat clients open at once

rapid hornet
#

yeah ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I try to be in them all too

#

I don't get any work done but oh well

analog acorn
#

LOL. I'm vainly trying to work now...

waxen thistle
#

hahaha....work.

blazing atlas
#

haha @analog acorn , same tabs

harsh bone
#

hi

analog acorn

Nah, got Discord on one computer, video on a second, and working in my notebook (paper and pen, not electronic)

rapid hornet
#

hi @harsh bone !

harsh bone
blazing atlas
#

what kind of notebook do you scribble on @analog acorn

rapid hornet
analog acorn
#

Levenger Circa or Code and Quill. I use various fountain pens for writing, or a mechanical HB pencil.

blazing atlas
#

ooh code and quill ones are purtty

analog acorn
#

Yes, I like them a lot!

rapid hornet
#

should be live

blazing atlas
#

;D

rapid hornet

lol

waxen thistle
#

That's really cool ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

blazing atlas
#

Cool stuff! @rapid hornet

rapid hornet
#

thanks @waxen thistle and @blazing atlas

waxen thistle
#

did you use anything as a reference/inspiration for your testing framework?

rapid hornet
#

@waxen thistle travis and github

shell mason
#

CircuitFruit would be cool as all fruits connect circuitpython boards

waxen thistle
#

FruitSalad ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

pearl shoal
#

That was awesome - two projects in one night ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

blazing atlas
#

@rapid hornet when you described what you were working on, first thing that went in mah head was a wall of all adafruit boards

rapid hornet
#

yes, its gonna happen @blazing atlas

waxen thistle
#

All in all you're just another fruit on the wall.

#

We need more STEM education. guitar riff

blazing atlas
#

could be a functional art installation

shell mason
#

think you have Adafruit looking hub so you hook circuitpython boards to it and boom Continues integration tester and hub have pi in it

rapid hornet
#

thats the idea @shell mason

shell mason

CircuitFruit could be the thing what it be called ๐Ÿ˜„

waxen thistle

@distant harbor Or they can do both ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

You're welcome @waxen thistle!

strong spear

wow. that is fast. Faster than I could get a package.

blazing atlas
#

DHL + Customs is cheaper for me than the other shipping options too

waxen thistle

Adafruit has always been stellar with their shipping

They sure have.

yeah @distant harbor

distant harbor

It's prob IFTTT then.

rapid hornet

yeah, makes sense

glossy glacier

@rapid hornet Do you know how long you get for setup at seatle maker fair?

rapid hornet

@glossy glacier I know who to ask

#

OooO

waxen thistle

@blazing atlas Yeah, I graduated college in 2007, and started in the seattle area that summer...stayed there for 2 years, then left for a better opportunity back home on the east coast.

@glossy field let me know if you visit

alpine nova
#

hi y'all

#

this show is particularly interesting as i have been working on the motor on my bicycle, but i don't know much about motors/controllers

#

actually not working on the motor itself, but the wiring between the motor, throttle and controller

#

i apparently destroyed my throttle and determined after deconstructing it, the sensor needs replacemenet

#

only because i broke one of the pins off

heady verge
#

bicycle? moped?

alpine nova
#

bicycle

#

i have an old hub motor/controller/throttle a friend gave me which i installed on my bike. it works sometimes, but i've had to make many repairs to it over time

#

there's only two wires coming from the motor and four from the controller

#

it is very appropriate, phil!

Has anyone here had trouble with Cyclone chips getting zapped JTAG pins?

#

I am using a cheap "USB Blaster" clone, but they've been fine for years.

rapid hornet
#

cyclone like fpga?

quick mesa
#

Yeah. Cyclone III. Now the chip will configure (apparently), but then Quartus / SignalTap says it can't access the SigTap instance on the chip?

#

I don't think it's configuring properly either, so I'm suspecting one of the pins has been zapped.

rapid hornet
#

ah bummer

quick mesa
#

It has happened before, so I started adding series resistors on all JTAG lines, but I forgot to do that on this board. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

rapid hornet
#

writing code to use a samd21 as a usb->jtag bridge is on my list

quick mesa
#

It's definitely worth adding at least some resistors, and possibly some clamp diodes to all JTAG lines tbh.

rapid hornet
#

k, good to know

quick mesa
#

I had it happen on a previous board where it zapped the internal ESD clamp diode in the Cyc III as I plugged in the USB Blaster from the PC. I should have known. lol

The logic timings do often change when you re-compile though, so it's possible it's a marginal timing issue.

haughty quiver

@waxen thistle I dig. It was over 100 here in Los Angeles a few weeks ago. That's when I decided it was time to get AC

Phil sounds like he's doing the Animaniac's song "Countries of the World" when he talks about where DHL is shipping to!

rapid hornet

I thought ladyada was doing overwatch

glossy glacier

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I am so happy this scope is finaly working!

analog acorn
#

@glossy glacier That was so freaking cool!

nimble egret
#

Nice work @glossy glacier

waxen thistle
#

@glossy glacier Awesome work man, you're so enthusastic with this!

glossy glacier
#

It is so hot in my shop. I am drawing about 25 amps right now, the majority of that is being turned into heat...

#

Next step is adding a plug for my fan...

paper peak
#

@glossy glacier which part(s) of the microscope draw the most current?

rapid hornet
#

lol, priorities. SEM then fan

glossy glacier
#

@paper peak The vacuum pumps and water chiller draws a lot. The rotary vain pump is not bad, but the high vacuum oil diffusion pump is literaly a big heater!

rapid hornet
#

it'll be nice in the winter

paper peak
#

so, everything, except maybe the actual electron source !

glossy glacier
#

@paper peak That is only about 3 amps...

#

@paper peak The rest of the scope does about 7.5.

#

My water chiller is supper crazy in efficent right now. That alone does 10 amps.

braces for arduino news

waxen thistle
#

gets the popcorn ready.

analog acorn
#

And the Intel news! Did you read PT's blog post on it this morning?

glossy glacier
#

@glossy glacier Also, as far as I know, the other people who own a scope are Ben Kravsno with his JEOL and DIY scope (http://benkrasnow.blogspot.com/), Sam Zelof (http://sam.zeloof.xyz/), Bob who owns a ISI super IIIA like me (http://members.tm.net/lapointe2/Scanning_Electron_Microscope.html), John Mcmaster who also has a ISI super IIIA (http://uvicrec.blogspot.com/2014/04/a-new-toy-arrives.html), Jerry Biehler with a Hitachi S-450 (https://hackaday.io/project/3281-hitachi-s-450-scanning-electron-microscope), my contact in sweeden with another ISI super IIIA, Andrew Back with some cambridge instruments scope (https://twitter.com/9600?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author) and a couple of others that I am probably forgetting.

I got an old SEM from a friend. Modernizing some parts to get it working.

distant harbor
#

@analog acorn Something about Intel not making dev boards anymore

fair gulch
analog acorn
#

Not exactly. More that they're not making Arduino compatible boards anymore.

distant harbor
#

Ahhhh okay

analog acorn

The blog post that Phil wrote had an interesting viewpoint...
