VAC only detects things like cheat programs. However: sometime last year, effects were updated to use the same asset integrity checks as the rest of the game. (Meaning – editing the game files to e.g. remove items would result in you being unable to join any multiplayer servers). In the future, other related features (like smoke grenades) will be updated as well.
