#Mining Rework/Change

So I've thought a while about a good way to suggest this without making it too far from original, and I think I came up with a good idea.

The Rework:

  1. Change rocks to behave more like oak+ trees, where they can have x to x amount of ores before depleting.
  2. Add 2 handed pickaxes or an off-hand item that when used, you'll receive more experience/mine more successfully but receive less or no resources.
  3. Change rocks to behave per player instead of per world, meaning for you, rocks would only deplete when you mine them, not when someone else mines them. This would especially be nice for leagues.

I'm a huge fan of the RS3 mining/smithing rework, personally think it's one of the greatest skill change updates ever; but it does not belong as a change in OSRS for sure. However this would be a MUCH more dumbed down change that fits better in line with old school.

I am a strong advocate for point 3.
Let's just assume that the depletion timer is an imaginary number that is perfectly balanced for that rock:

  • Social mining becomes a thing like how social woodcutting has become

  • Incentivizes unlocking more runite rocks to add to your rotation instead of world hopping on the same spot

  • Lays the groundwork for future improvements to the mining system, since you know that if mining gold instead of buying it becomes the norm, overpopulation won't hurt the method.

#

Probably would screw with bots too, but I have no proof or math, only gut feeling

No, the current system works well with osrs’ tick system. No change.

So it doesn't work for woodcutting post forestry?

I also agree with point 3 - changing rocks to behave per player. ie 2+ players are in the same clump of rocks, and when one player mines a rock it goes empty for them but not the other players

#

This would be a big change for F2P, where those mines beneath Varrock & in Lumbridge are hotly contested

#

And I see why @thin iris says it would change world hopping for rune ore @dark elm. World hopping for rune works because the depletion status of the ore changes based on whether someone in that world mined the rock. If the logic changes to "you mined this rock; therefore it is depleted" that depleted status might follow you across worlds

#

Yes that is currently why you would world hop for rune. But if you hopped worlds and the rune rock was still depleted because you mined it in another world, then obviously you couldn't world hop to mine

#

Hopping wouldn't work in option #3

#

Since the depletion status would follow your character rather than being shared with everyone in a world

#

Like birdhouses, rocks would basically be instanced

#

True

#

Either way, I think rune rock contention is the biggest change to actual economy / bots

#

Yeah idk. Likely results in more rune mining bots, weirder rune ore routes spots for players

#

But it seems great for ie being able to be in the same world as someone else chatting while you both efficiently mine iron ore

#

Which would be quite nice

I want to add that making updates around bots is admitting defeat. Bots will always exist.

#

not always true

#

bots will always exist, but you don't have to make it easier for them to bot either

#

that's like saying "racism will always exist, why bother teaching people to not be racist?"

bump, really see this helping alleviate for upcoming leagues and lowering number of people at stars!
