I was right about the whole accepting death thing! Also interesting that this is the second movie after Totoro to be based off Miyazaki’s childhood. This also explains a lot of things like the beginning of the movie (Miyazaki was a young child during WW2 and had to evacuate twice with his parents), the strong focus on the relationship between a mother with her son (he was very close to his own mom) and the main character feeling like an outcast (Miyazaki had digestive problems as a kid and because he was told he wouldn’t live till 20 as a result he felt like an outcast towards everyone else).

It’s a pretty good compelling story the struggles Miyazaki having to accept his mother‘s death as well as except his new mother.
