It's true that you'll need a lot of zen at hq18 but remember that building upgrades take 18 days to complete at that level
So unless you have a ton of building upgrade skips, you won't need all of that zen up front. You'll have over two weeks gather more zen while your buildings are upgrading

Upgrading your bots to lvl 70 also consumes zen resources.
How reliable zen farming is, depends on you as a player, the bots/combiner you use, and the base lvl you choose to attack.
Your alliance hq also consumes zen through donations

what do you mean by "reliable"?
fwiw I only farm Zen when I need it these days, can usually get 300k+ per week without really annoying myself too much

I always farm zen. Even if I don't need it for leveling up I can still buy xp boosts with it

I never gapped out on Zen, but I also grinded daily and rarely if ever missed a week to farm Zen. I’d buy all I could until level 80 frankly. Lower level players also sometimes wonder what they’ll do with all that maxed out 4 million spark. 😂
