I ran the command a second time, and the glint effect for enchantments became visible on the NPC when walking around. But opening up the /npc equip GUI showed unenchanted armour. It's inconsistent.

Another player looked at the same npc, and saw that its armour had coloured trims on it, even though I gave it no such armour. And it appeared to have an elytra, despite me giving it a chestplate

Oh. I perceived the mirror equipment to be a one off command to simply be an easy way to give it the same stuff I have. But im now discovering that its mirred all the time, for every player. My bad perhaps.
