I was trying to bait out enemy ships around a Pirate Base when an NPC ship strayed into aggro range and started fighting the pirates. It took most of the hits for me, and with careful use of the Tractor Beam and my two heavy Ion ships I managed to save the NPC from destruction - but only just. Limping with two engines and half its guts blown apart, the ship is active but doesn't currently have any behavior to respond to hails.
The road map for Career 2.0 suggests the inclusion of Escort, Haul Wreck and Distress Signal missions, but it would be great if these types of events could trigger dynamically from damaged NPC ships, so that you could properly help your meat shields friends after a battle like this one!
As an added request, it would be nice to offer repairs on an NPC ship - opening the build menu and allowing you to choose which parts you could afford to help fix (or Fix All if you want to flex your material wealth) and get paid in credits. Maybe that could also be a Distress Signal mission type too.
