Asteroid Bases?

Adding the ability to incorporate other elements (directly attaching rather than salvaging and building) would be amazing. Build straight into an asteroid, replacing chunks as you place blocks, and use the shell as an ablative shield!

I've always loved the idea of asteroid bases. Is this feasible/viable/a desired feature?
