#How to transform in animation tab without transforming symmetrically?

I'm trying to create a hammer shaft that extends and retracts, but whenever I transform it, I would like it to stay attached to the ground while only resizing one end of it towards the other end. Instead, every time I try to resize, it drags both ends towards each other. Is there a toggle for this?
