#How to get better at modeling / learn texturing? (here are some of my models)

Hi!
I’ve been modeling in Blockbench for Hytale almost every day since late December (started around Dec 28 with very basic models like a simple potion). Since then, I’ve made something nearly daily – often multiple models.

Here’s what I tried recently:

Trampoline & crate: modeled with reference images → those 8 "corners" were tedious - and now if i want to change one of the 8 blue corners (model) - i have to change every single one?
First mushroom: no reference → struggled badly with shape & colors
Second mushroom + mob version: used a reference + took more time → better, but still unsure

Last 4 images are very early models from dec 25-30.
The last image is/was my first model (tried to make a candy cane but stopped because i didn't know / want to make the curve)

My main struggles:

Texturing without reference – how do I choose colors, materials, or style?
What simple objects should I model next to build core skills efficiently?
Are there concept-focused tutorials (not just UI/shortcuts) on how to think while modeling? Same for texturing?
How do I animate a walking mob in Blockbench? (e.g., this mushroom character)
I’ve searched, but most tutorials only cover technical basics – not artistic workflow or decision-making.
Any tips, resources, or feedback would mean a lot!

(Images attached: trampoline, crate, mushroom w/o ref, mushroom w/ ref, mushroom mob, simple_potion from Dec 28)

(^above are roughly my thoughts / feelings but summarized and shortened by ai. Among others that you don't have to read tripple that but more chaotic and less concise)

I think i have improved? But i can't tell how much. A little maybe?

t first (first / second day maybe) i watched a couple tutorials, most of them teached only the shortcuts/ui.
Then i didn't watch more because i couln't find "advanced" beginner tutorials that didn't just repeat the shortcuts/ui

Note that most available Blockbench tutorials don't work with the Hytale plugin—still great to get the fundamentals down for beginners.
Thomas Frick's blog does an excellent job on explaining his workflow on the Hytale assets, worth a look!

For what helped me.
I started my (Hytale) modding journey around late November. Here is my first attempt by doing fanart for Thaumcraft 😆 to figure out the texturing of Hytale.

#

After that I spend a lot of time learning and practicing colour theory for pixel art.

#

Learning how to hue shift improved my textures by a ton for instance.

This gradient generator plugin is pretty neat!
