Hi all,
I’ve been searching online (and I looked through this server too), but haven’t been able to find any good info on how to export a Minecraft player model to an OBJ file for full-color 3D printing. I’m a total beginner with Blockbench, but from what I’ve read so far, I think it should be possible to do this without too much trouble. I just can't seem to find all the steps that would be needed to do it.
Here’s what I know so far:
- I know how to start a new Blockbench project, choose the “Skin” option, and import a Minecraft skin file.
- I also know I can export a Blockbench model as an OBJ because the program supports that.
- If more complex modeling is required, I know I can convert the Skin project into a Generic project.
Where I’m getting stuck is with the outer 2D layers of the skin (the “overlay” layers people use to add extra details like hair, jackets, hats, etc.). Since those layers are 2D planes, I don't think they'll have any depth when exported, which means they can't be 3D printed.
Is there a way in Blockbench to “thicken” those 2D layers into 3D geometry? Also, when it exports to an OBJ, does it export a material file too? The material/texture file would be needed so the model can be printed correctly in full color.
I’ve gone through the menus, tried searching online, and checked the documentation, but I haven’t found a solid answer yet. If anyone here has experience that could do what I'm asking, I’d really appreciate your guidance! I really want to figure out how to do this so I can surprise my friends and family with 3D printed figurines of their Minecraft avatars for Christmas. Thanks in advance for any help or tips you can share!
