#Can I make cars like these from Mena on Sketchfab in BB?

These cars are low-poly, but I don't know if they're low-poly enough to be made in Blockbench

Mena also has a lot of other cars that look quite good for low poly models... Race cars, sportscars, supercars, muscle cars, electric cars, rally cars... A bit of everything

the cars you're referencing is 4k triangles so its not too big. A character I made in Blockbench was around that same size and I didn't have any real performance issue if that's what you're asking. the only thing that might not be ideal is texturing it in blockbench if you want it to match the reference but if you don't care about that then its not an issue. there shouldn't be anything stopping you from modeling this but it might be easier in blender

Tip: bake some of the detail into the textures so you can get away with a lower poly model

I think baking the details into textures might make my cars look like their details are slapped or painted on though 😞

#

Almost like PS1 level graphics or even lower

you have to ask yourself what is the end goal of the model, for example i use blockbench since i like low poly models with pixel art textures, if youre looking for something more detailed then that or just dont like pixel art then Blender might be the tool for you. Blockbench is simpler then blender and a great place to start if you're just learning modeling.

I'm a newbie when it comes to 3D modeling

#

Even game dev itself is a challenge for me

#

I like more realistic and believable designs, but it takes a lot of time and effort to make something like that for a beginner like myself

#

Starting out with simpler models, like what Mena does with their cars, would be easier on me for learning the basics of modeling, and then I could transfer to Blender as I get more familiar with the modeling process

#

The low poly style does look kind of interesting though...

If you're new to modeling in general I would just start with blockbench as its the easiest to learn. I would highly suggest choosing something else besides a car as its somewhat of a complicated model even when its simplified. Start with something like a chair and go from start to finish, you will learn so much and have a better understanding of what is needed in order to model those cars. this is a good video to watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsax5p4brN8

Blockbench for Beginners - The Interface & All Basics. In this tutorial video I cover everything a new user of Blockbench would need to know before creating their first model. Learn about both the basic and advanced design tools in only a few minutes. The video covers how to install and use this free 3D design program.

is good for baking stuff in

#

If you do it good it looks nice

#

Just curious, what engine are you using/what are you using the models for?

You should be able to also bake PBR maps like normals, roughness and metalness then

There's this tutorial series by Bastiaan Olij I found for Godot on making a car game, but he uses Blender instead of Blockbench, and a pre made model of a car instead of making a car model himself, to save time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5vE-nNszxA&list=PLe63S5Eft1KapdW0-o824gCbG8LPvzxSA

This video shows how to import a car model from Blender using the GLTF export into Godot and then setting up this car so it can drive around a simple scene.

There is one setting that isn't described correctly. The more a sp...

He goes through the PBR settings after getting the car into Godot, and it looks quite simple to use them

There's also a tutorial from Blockbench themselves on making a low-poly truck that could help me learn to make other vehicles like different cars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbyCbA1c8BM

Let's learn how to create low-poly mesh models with pixel-art textures!

Something I want to have in my cars is realistic proportions, but with a low polycount, so it's still low poly while looking like how a real car would

GLTF is the best in my opinion as it supports the best feature set

#

You can always import into blender then export as GLTF to convert it

I think I might want to use pre-made car models at first for my Godot racing game to get it started, then I could try making my own later in Blockbench or Blender

Mena has three free cars on their Sketchfab page, as well as on their own website (mena-assets.com). They even have a 50% off sale going on the site

I just found a really nice Blender tutorial for making a low-poly car... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zkg7Ol2jEjs It's for Blender 2.8 though, and the latest version is 4.1...

They use the default cube and a reference image of the side view of a car to start out with, with a mirror modifier on the cube to make modeling the car easier, by mirroring the changes they do on one side to the other

#

I think with a bit more shape to the car body I could make a car that looks quite similar to one of Mena's cars, but with my own style 🙂 Maybe with some seethrough windows for making a simple interior?

#

So I might not even need Blockbench if I was just going to do that Blender tutorial instead 🤔

The UI isn't that different between the two

I think Blender might be better for adding details to low-poly car models to make them look more believable and realistic while still having a low polycount, since I don't know if Blockbench could do something similar or not
