#how to implement minecraft dungeons-esque face designs?

if you look at all the creatures and characters in minecraft dungeons you can tell they have depth with eyes or layers on the skin. how can i implement this properly? or is it just a specific art thing only in drawings

(and just to make sure, this isn't for the game, just a render and it made more sense to put it here since i'm using the limitations of the minecraft skin template)
