After digging into why the SWAT AI is so scuffed, it’s pretty clear it’s not just a VOID Interactive problem some of it is baked into how UE5 handles AI systems. UE5 can be finicky as hell when you start pushing complex squad behaviors, especially with tightly coupled systems like behavior trees, perception, and navmesh all stepping on each other. At this point, I’m not holding my breath for a real fix. I’d like to see it, as would the rest of us, but that kind of overhaul it ACTUALLY needs, requires a pretty extensive rewrite of the games code. I think we’ll need to wait for the sequel to the game to see the changes we all would love to see…

FSMs are rigid and brittle when scaled to complex team coordination, while GOAP systems require clean world-state representation and well-defined action costs to function correctly.
