I don't know the particulars of that story line (could even be fully created by them) but a lot of the maps take inspiration from major events either loosely or almost direct copies. Neon Tomb is certainly inspired by the Pulse Shooting (setting, inspiration for attack), while a map like Ides of March is more loosely inspired by events such as the JFK assassination and the Las Vegas Shooting, while other maps like Carriers of the Vine having direct references to the Waco Siege and Lethal Obsession having references to the Siege of Ruby Ridge in both of their settings
