Kind of confused on how familiars work. What I understand from research is it seems you need to get fams to epic (by using them to level them up + fusing rares to 100) and then reveal the potential, hoping for things like drop rate, boss DMG, or healing?

If they don't end up useful you can extract them for more leveling uptime. You should not be revealing rare or common fams.

Does that more or less seem correct? Thanks!

Yes, you should start with rare tier fam card. If the epic fam cards have useless stats tier them up again to unique rank.

Some extra stuff: when starting out, open some rares and commons for 15% ied and normal drop. Once you got those and you are grinding in areas where you can actually get enough familiars to work on them before moving on, you'll want to go epic until you get a large drop fam. Stuff like large heal, att% and boss dmg are nice bonuses. Total dmg% and ied are fine too if they beat your current ones. After you get large drop you'll move on to uniques while still opening epics in case you get a good dmg familiar from that. Fyi, a normal drop epic can be 60% while rare is 50%. Large meso + drop is also 60%, so if you get one of those, just keep it until large drop.
