# woeful jasper What's everyone's scariest experience whilst on the road?

A biker overtaking a car in the oncoming lane of a single lane 2 way country road and pulling back in with inches to spare, the rider was easily exceeding 100mph and the road was a 50, had he done it half a mile later he would’ve done it on a blind crest while I was approaching.

Although it wasn’t my fault as I was doing literally nothing wrong, knowing a biker could’ve become strawberry jam in my grille that would’ve haunted me until the day I die

# marble veldt I have to say looking at all these photos of your trucks and seeing you sleep ou...

Once you get a fixed truck assigned to you I recommend making it feel like home, put some decorations, floor mats etc. Especially when you're away from home for weeks you wanna feel at home. However be prepared to be treated like a lesser human being by many companies. (Ofcourse not all, some are extremely friendly). Get some trucking apps on your phone to look for nice spots to sleep.

Get proper equipment like gloves, shoes, clothes etc. Lots of companies require you to wear a hi vis and helmet + goggles

#

There's so much to prepare but that'd be considered spamming if I were to tell all of it

marble veldt
proper elbow
#

Wouldn't know about other countries

#

Nor would I of my own I didn't pay a penny

#

I got paid actually

#

I did a truck driver program at school. School associates with a organization that logistics company's can join, and fund that organization and get students that want to become a truck driver in return

#

I think it's somewhere between 3/4k here

#

But you can always discuss with a trucking company that they pay for it in full and in exchange youll drive for that company for a set number of years

lucid birch
#

and yes ive learned from it just a rookie mistake that couldve been avoided when i had some more experience.

if you fail you just take the test again or get 1 or 2 lessons and retake the test , you don’t pay 3k, a days training and a retest is like £300-£400

#

i did 4 days in a class 2, 3 days in an artic and then my test on day 7

tall sonnet
#

Don’t go with a school that takes you in a rigid first it’s a waste of time

#

7 days in artic > 3 days rigid and 4 days artic

tawny moth
#

probably true but i passed first time so idc what they put me in

#

I did pay 3k a few years ago so i don’t know what it will be like now but i imagine it hasn’t changed much

tawny moth
#

also don’t book through an agency, go directly though a driving school. I had friends go through agency’s and have nightmares

#

and don’t pay for any of this pass plus, safe pass ****

#

just if u fail, book a retest and go again

#

complete waste of money the pass plus stuff

tall sonnet
#

Tbf pass protection may not be a totally bad idea if you’re going straight from car to class 1, iirc it only costs around 300 and gives you 2 extra attempts (I think?)

#

At least with my school

tawny moth
#

I booked mine though an agency stupidly but i passed first time so it wasn’t a nightmare but i had 2 people on my course that had booked with the same agency and they failed a year previous and had to wait for a whole year to get training and retest dates

tawny moth
# tall sonnet 🤣 f that

i wanted to pass straight away when i turned 18 so contacted every school and agency and told them i could travel anywhere in the UK as long as they could get me in quickly and then they got me a school on london and i just went down for a week and stayed in a hotel

tall sonnet
#

Fair play didn’t even know u could do it through an agency tbh. I just booked direct with the school

marble veldt

#

Idk why so many are sugarcoating it, I guess people are different but the reality is you work long hours, and you won't make it home in human hours ever. If you do work a trucking job that has normal hours, it doesnt pay. If you work on the road, well you might as well say bye to anything outside work. You are hated by loads of people just because you're in a truck on the road, and no one respects you or shows appreciation

I'm just giving my perspective, it has its perks and there's a reason I'm 6 years deep at this point but I'm too lazy to go back to school and my brain is fried

formal minnow

U can have easy job doing supermarkets

Or do the hard stuff where u know its 12h days every day

blissful glade
#

I used to be super hyped earlier into my years, from van to C to CE and I was excited driving longer distance not realizing how much farther it would get me from more important things in life

#

Its not hard, it's just mindless from day to day. After some years everything becomes the same

#

I should have stayed driving vans

formal minnow
#

I drive further distance then most of our trucks lol

#

And nothing is stopping h from going back to a van lol

blissful glade

I'm gonna start aiming for a logistics coordinator later

formal minnow
#

Boring

#

Rather sit with a view all day

#

Then deal with drivers

blissful glade

Lol, yeah I used to think that too

Till more important things appeared in life than just sitting alone on the road everyday

#

I dunno man, I just wanted more from life so maybe I just see this as a dead end so I gotta improvise

#

It loses its magic eventually

lucid birch

lucid birch

blissful glade

#

For some this is all they will do, as long as ur happy

lucid birch
#

I would never spend thousands of euros on trucks

blissful glade
#

I just think people should also know the other side of the story as opposed to "it's awesome I love it" ya know? 😄

lucid birch
#

Its a work truck

blissful glade
#

It wasn't for me, I bought literally 2500 worth of indoor furnishings just to make the cab cooler, backwalls, ceiling etc

#

Not to mention all the lighting outside

formal minnow
#

if its a company i work on maybe 500 euro max

#

to some double burners / fogs etc

blissful glade
#

Lights are expensive as hell aswell

formal minnow
#

i know

blissful glade
#

A single double sided side light is 50 euros here

formal minnow
#

i got a lightbar on my car that was 700

formal minnow
#

thats cheap imo

#

for the fact that they should last the whole trucks life

#

and u can just swap bulbs if dead

#

even if i ever get my own truck on lights etc its maybe 4000 max

#

including worklights

#

and then some interior work lol

#

but if i got company i can just write them off as tax exspenses etc

blissful glade
#

Nah I mean the side lights idk what they're called in English, that u can put on ur trailer as an example

formal minnow
#

hella double burners?

blissful glade
#

1 is 50-55, and ud have 20 of those

formal minnow
#

u dont have to put 20 tho

#

plenty of people got like 5 each side

#

is it alot? yes perhaps

#

but if a company is building a truck and trailer and they allow u to add stuff

#

they are def paying to it aswell / writing it off in taxes

blissful glade
#

Scandi truck tuning involves lots of lighting

formal minnow
#

and only letting u pay what they didnt get back

#

yes but most of those trucks are also owner operator

#

so they def write it off on taxes

blissful glade
#

Not really

#

I mean yeah they are paid off on taxes, but they're still not free

#

And u spend thousands upon thousands on tuning the truck

formal minnow
#

ofc but if u drive the truck for 10-15 years

#

its worth it

#

your spending alot of time in it

blissful glade
#

Those trucks get replaced every 3-4 years

formal minnow
#

for alot of people its pride

#

depends on company

#

look at flower guys / container guys

#

theyre driving trucks for 20 years

#

because why not

#

emision zones? who cares

#

because they dont give a f

#

theyre going into emision zones they aint allowed in lol

#

u do

#

alot of flower / fruit driving to france

#

to the massive fruit / flower etc auction there

#

not much local when u do flowers

#

they are definetly driving everywhere lol

#

ive seen them on the edge of belgium and france

#

in germany etc

#

plenty of new ofc

#

but also plenty of old

#

yes rare to see other old

#

because thats all the flower people really drive

#

ur not here enough then kekw

proper elbow
#

How did this happen

#

I have 12 pallets on the delivery list, 10 on the cmr and 11 inside the trailer

formal minnow
#

office gets told its 12 by customer

#

customer tells them make it 10 cuz less pallets = cheaper

#

probably fits on 11

#

and didnt adjust on paper

#

one of their drivers lives in my village or closeby

#

as theres always one parked here

#

theres some very nice trucks parked here always

#

hopefully mine in there someday lol

#

i think alot of them also take the truck home

#

van right now but soon hopefully truck

#

needa talk to my lead but this man went on vacation once again

#

lol

#

cant do lzv till u have 5 years

#

5 years of driving ce experience

#

then u can go for license

#

uh if u have eu citizenship

#

u needa register here to be able to get license here

#

but if u already have license

#

for truck

#

and move here should be able to change it but depending where your from u may need to retake drive test

#

yeah

#

because otherwise everyone will just buy their license in poland

#

and convert it

#

tbf any can be a hct equipped tractor here

#

as ce tractor can haul 2 trailers

#

and rigid can haul a full size trailer with a dolly or just 2 normal drawbar ones

#

no real need for extra setup besides hitches on trailers / slide axles

radiant junco
#

Just for the sake of curiosity and probably seeing an error in yesterday's drive back home can you guys see people who are on the left side of the trailer near the rear or is that a blind spot in every truck?

formal minnow
#

depends on how your mirrors etc are setup i geuss

#

but yeah it is in the end still a blindspot depending in what position theyre driving etc on the road

#

im in a van way shorter and i sometimes almost push people off the road on accident

#

because they pull up beside me on highway dont pass fully and are just far enough left i cant see them in my mirror

radiant junco
#

Ah yeah then I got in the blind spot yesterday evening

formal minnow
#

it happens

radiant junco
#

Like I was in the left land going 110 and wanted to pass a truck that was taking the exit but then they saw that they were taking the wrong exit and proceeded to almost side swipe me

formal minnow
#

i mean

#

probably was a white plate with the letters: lv, ro , hu,pl or something

#

they dont care if they see you lol

#

roundabout right on the exit? nah lets cause a pileup

#

ive had them push me into the barrier almost where i could just stop in time

#

because they decide that the split (both go to the same highway)

radiant junco
#

Nah it was on the A58 exit Goes, Zierikzee, Rotterdam

formal minnow
#

isnt good enough so just force left over the merge point when theres a car there

#

they dont care either way

#

they reverse on highways etc cuz they missed a exit

#

wich takes longer then just turning around etc

#

thats why i got a dashcam

#

best bet im getting my moneys worth if one of em hits me

#

because ill chase em if they dont stop

#

if my car is totaled who cares if they hit it again

#

they gon be paying up

radiant junco
#

I also got a dashcam luckily but not in my private car

formal minnow
#

i do

#

but not in my workvan

#

idk its a good thing but also a bad thing

#

lol

radiant junco
#

I have 2 but I've got to get a small SD card for my 2nd one

formal minnow
#

unless i save

#

mine just keeps wiping

radiant junco
#

Yeah same here, but I use that one for work due to it also recording sound and the entire 2 days ish

formal minnow
#

sound dont matter

#

then they cant hear me text the one time i am on my phone for something

#

lol

radiant junco
#

I drive with people so that's a bit different then packages

formal minnow
#

right

#

well if i ever have a crash in my workvan

#

i hope it aint my fault lol

#

i keep plenty of distance but ive had some close calls having to brake hard due to other inconsiderate c's

#

as in im already breaking hard but no lets just shoot right infront of the van

#

because that lane seems to be moving faster (everything is stopping completely)

radiant junco
#

Yeah I almost split a postnl van in 2 due to their idiocracy during my early days

formal minnow
#

not much of a loss that would be

#

some ducttape and a handshake and hes on his way again

radiant junco
#

If I was alone in the van I would have done a halfassed attempt at breaking but I had a full van that evening

formal minnow
#

lol

#

if your coming from the rear always make sure u stop

#

if u then get hit from behind

#

its not your fault

#

specially the stupid cars that go "avoid"

#

when they dont need the space

#

meanwhile im comming in hot

radiant junco
#

Yeah but this guy came from the left at 20 whilst I was going 50

formal minnow
#

have been braking for atleast a 100 meters shifting back

#

but noo take the small spot i may need to not crush your car

#

stupid people

formal minnow
#

the most dangerous people on the road are the old people

#

and balkan truck drivers

radiant junco
#

Yeah I do but not to him apparently, heck even during my trial lesson I almost ended a bicyclists life due to them just crossing without a care

formal minnow
#

the amount of pl lv etc i see with a car infront because they sideswipe them

#

because they just go

#

instead of waiting the 10 secs where its obvious they get given room

#

is insane

formal minnow
#

like

#

i saw u

#

u dont have right of way

#

as soon as i start turning i aint stopping

#

because aint no way ill be able to see others comming then so if u keep going

#

well your gonna feel it

#

one way or the other

radiant junco
#

Yeah, but during that trial lesson I was in a I think 14 ton truck or something

#

So he was basically lucky I saw him and let off of the gas pedal

formal minnow
#

yeap

#

i get they risk infront of cars etc

#

but vans / trucks is dumb

#

because your not gona win

#

/ we wont see you

radiant junco
#

Yep

#

That way I also almost had hit a scooter guy who was in my blind spot during my last run for that day at work

formal minnow
#

what do u do

#

residential deliveries or smth?

radiant junco
#

I drive with elderly people so I come in a lot of cities/villages

formal minnow
#

so taxi van

radiant junco
#

Yeah, basically a shortened version of the postal vans

#

We do get the extended versions when one of our main vans is away for repairs or something

#

Or we just get a stupid Vito

formal minnow
#

haha

#

i just msged my planner to give me a chill ride friday

#

lets see if they listen lol

#

i dont want to start at 430/5 am again to be done at 7pm

radiant junco
#

Yeah that just sucks

formal minnow
#

yea

#

especially seeing a 5am start = 4 wakeup

radiant junco
#

Damn

#

But at least soon you'll get your C or CE license

formal minnow
#

i hope so yes

#

still gotta start but my boss is on vacation

radiant junco
#

And he's coming back soon or is he still away for another month?

formal minnow
#

idk just left today lol

radiant junco
#

Damn

formal minnow
#

alltough i can ask the proper proper boss

#

(owner)

#

when i see him

radiant junco
#

True you could ask him but you should figure it out when's the best time for it and who there is

formal minnow
#

perhaps

#

its annoying cuz no rigids are available rn

#

and i dont think the one who passed first has started ce yet

radiant junco
#

Yeah that's indeed annoying but best to wait for your chances to come just like what I'm waiting for

#

Gotta keep up with ma

formal minnow
radiant junco
formal minnow
#

nice

radiant junco
#

Like my current work and bosses can be seen as a period to find where you want to go to next so it's either going for your taxi pass and go work there or you're going to the trucking/postal services

#

And they only let you go when they think that you're ready and when you think yourself that you're ready for it

formal minnow
#

yea

#

my goal is to get license

#

and then save enough to start my own company lol

#

just want my name on a truck yknow

radiant junco
#

Ah sounds fun

#

I'm just waiting till I've saved up enough at Bidfood and the place after that so that I can at least get my own truck and still drive for them but I don't have to worry if I'm going to do dumb stuff with it

formal minnow
#

yea

#

i think my goal is to get my own truck

#

but only if i can secure just chartering for the company i work for

#

or someone else

radiant junco
#

Yeah that's the best way, just gotta hope that the price for a used one won't be too high

formal minnow
#

yea

#

just lease

#

when u start

#

thats what imma do

#

because if u buy used and it breaks u gotta cough up all the money

#

my goal is to expand

radiant junco
#

True that's indeed something, but I'll just wait and see how much I can save up during those periods might have enough money for a nice looking Freightliner or Scania T

formal minnow
#

and then buy a older truck as a "show truck" / my toy xD

formal minnow
#

i wouldnt start with that

#

just a normal truck

radiant junco
#

Yeah but it's something to save up for at least

formal minnow
#

yes

#

id love a 4series t cab

radiant junco
#

Yeah or a Scania 143

formal minnow
#

yes

radiant junco
#

Yeah they are kinda pricey to fix and get it up and running tbh

formal minnow
#

Yes

#

but id find whatever way to write off taxes on it lol

radiant junco
formal minnow
#

make it a mobile advertisement basicly

radiant junco
#

Yeah that would be fun

formal minnow
#

we can only dream 🙏

radiant junco
#

Yep or get a money tree, treat it like it wants to be treated and ear the cash from that

formal minnow
#

yep xD

#

if i was rich id just truck to truck

#

make some money to pay for the fuel n be happy tbf lol

radiant junco
#

Yeah, I would just mainly buy a real classic American dream and restore it completely with a few hints of European upgrades such as a stronger engine and synchronized gearbox

#

But can't do a lot with it

formal minnow
#

theres some driving around in daily use

#

theres a kenworth cabover i see occasionally

#

some petes

radiant junco
#

True but I was more thinking about something along the lines of a Mack Superliner or making a replica of the RubberDuck

formal minnow
radiant junco
#

It's fun and unique so there's no way some idiot would steal it especially since it's an automatic

formal minnow
#

i mean

#

chances are low ofc

#

but trucks that stand out even got stolen lol

radiant junco
#

Yeah but would love to see them try driving a manual one with a stick shift and un synchronized gear box

I have an interesting thing to talk about (to me at least). There’s a little bridge along the river Thames that joins a village to a B road, normally it’s very insignificant but it has a privately owned toll booth on it that’s been in continuous operation since the late 1800’s (bridge was built in 1769). While regular modern toll booths would charge you between £7-£10 in a car this bridge literally only asks you for 10 pence. It’s a really cute functional relic of ye olde britain and the people who work it are lovely. And they give you vintage tickets for receipts

#

Since I’m in my artic it’s 60p

formal minnow
#

Nice

#

Probably stays a toll bridge for historic stuff

sinful tiger
#

Nope, it’s actually to do with being a King George era approval that’s been held by Parliament

#

Basically the income from the tolls massively outweigh the maintenance, it’s a tax free return into its own upkeep

A new FMCSA rule restricts the use of all hand-held mobile devices by drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). This rulemaking restricts a CMV driver from holding a mobile device to make a call, or dialing by pressing more than a single button. CMV drivers who use a mobile phone while driving can only use a hands-free phone located in close ...

Can't believe these people got their license...

I was driving behind this truck for 30 minutes. He honked at every truck he overtook for whatever reason. After a while I decided to overtake him because I was faster uphill. When I had passed him he put on his high beams for more than half a minute before overtaking me back because his top speed is 2kph higher than mine. Honked again, and dropped to 80 as soon as he passed me, followed by taking the first exit...

Searched for his company on Google. Had 1 review and total from another driver and he described the exact same scenarios that dude had been doing.

#

Took the liberty of beeping out my reaction which was saying naughty things in 3 different languages.

#

Also put on his high beams to other drivers that were going the speed limit in the baustelles, like 70,60 etc.

#

Was one of those lanes where the truck literally don't fit in the lane

#

There's a autobahn in your baustelle

#

Can't find any sense in reading this lol but might just be me

#

I meant those baustelles with 1 lane for like < 2m width, where you'll be driving on the yellow line and be 10cm from the concrete barrier on the other side.

#

It's hard to let someone in front there?

#

I drive depending on the load. Always drive 90 when empty, often when loaded. Always drive the speed limit in baustelles because it's narrow, there's people working and there's speed camera's everywhere

#

Like I said usually kinda narrow, people working there often close to the barriers, and those pesky camera's

Hate those with a burning passion
