#Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

No, it's not that one
and I can't seem to remember which moment it played at but I'll find it
(To be honest with you I am not sure what you mean by "the" track because there is so much good music in this game)
Act 2 ||THE track I consider to be Renoir's fight near the peak of the monolith||
Not quite
That's the shorthand
He posted a cover of Austin Wintory's Journey on a random French gamedev forum he'd never been on before, and then the game director also happened to go to that forum that he had also never been on before
They had a deal worked out within hours
(Also worth noting that Alice Duport-Percier had significant compositional input on every piece of music she sings in)
Testard was really active on Soundcloud though, that's true
Just happens to not be specifically where he was found
According to the game director, just about every member of the team has a similar story
His co-writer was some kind of corporate stock broker or something
The fact this game even came out is astonishing and that it's so good in night every aspect of it is insane
Writing, on point
Art, on point
Music? Holy hell
Guillaume Broche (the game director) really doesn't love the "THIS IS HOW GAMES SHOULD BE MADE" discourse popping up around Expedition 33 because, in his words, it was a lot of luck and he's pretty sure he wouldn't be able to make it happen a second time the way he did
Also he really likes a lot of the games he's being used as a rhetorical weapon against
Yeah, It's a miracle this game exists but it's a lightning in a bottle, not every team has these strokes of luck to make this kinda product
Especially Final Fantasy. He jokes that he only cast Ben Starr because Ben Starr is a fellow Final Fantasy 8 Enjoyer
But he also likes 16 well enough that he put a Clive outfit for Ben's character in the game
(A legally distinct Clive outfit, no less. Full homage, not anything official)
I have stayed away from FF16 because I want to play it one day for myself
I need a better gpu
mine old 1060 doesn't even reach minimum requirements
Lune?
Act 2 all ||look at the lyrics for that song later :^)||
||It's the plot of Act 3, on god, no cap, straight up||
||Holy hell||
Act 2 ||Chromatic Rammusser|| ||I'm sorry, how many times does Chromatic Rammusser get to attack in a row?||
Answer ||Until you fill the break bar with counter attacks, IIRC||
Two more Blue Mage skills left
And then I think I put him away and maybe try to learn how Sciel works
Act 3 ||The Abyss||||He appears to be slightly faster on NG+ than on NG.||
Act 2 ||visage all|| ||uhh, what do you mean "that was Verso" Verso?||
Act 2 ||post visages|| ||bond deepens indeed
||
Act 2 gen ||I don't understand why Maelle keeps getting first turn, when Verso literally has First Strike equipped||
what are their speed stats?
First Strike should trump speed, right?
||Verso: 947, Maelle: 828||
so even if it didn't, speed wouldn't affect it
the only thing I can think of is if "Augmented First Strike"'s text is wrong
The text
but even then, it's not consistent. Sometimes she plays first, sometimes he does
Both have the same name so lets use: - LFS (Luminas First Strike) - AFS (Advantage First Strike) for first strike attack to enter battle with advantage I did some testing and if you want to use LFS on all characters then dont use AFS to start combat bcs LFS will be ignored. When using LFS without starting combat with AFS the characters will star...
Huh
Act 3 skills
||I just used Stendhal for the first time and it did 200K damage||
||What is this sorcery||
what
Now this unlocks a new strat
Gorilla Maelle
||Just feed her all the buffs and nuke things||
That do be the community's favorite strat
Indeed
Act 3 ||I went back to fight Chromatic Clair Obscur expedition 33 themselves and Stendhaled their ass to death, I struggled for like an hour to set the thing with Virtuous Stance and Sciel's double damage buff and some other stuff and it nuked the thing down to a smudge of HP on one hit||
These [Act 3] ||Flying Manor refights are extremely fun. I just spent about three hours getting my ass kicked by Dualliste (who I facerolled the first time) and it is about as much fun as I've had in this game||
||I generate enough Gradient that I was using Maelle's tier 1 gradient every turn to get her into Virtuose stance so she could Stendahl every time she was up for about 1.5mil/turn||
||I liked the Flying Manor a lot, one of my favorite endgame dungeons||
I am also finding that that infinite merchant grind seems mildly unneccessary. I have 200+ lumina and my core team is in the mid-80s and I'm not done with what there is to do before I'd have to hit that to go to level cap
I ran out of stuff on my high 80s and did find the grind to be necessary for that 99
I found that funny enemy that attacks like 20 times per turn
Which one lmao
||the creature||
Oh, heh
"You learned how to parry yet? you will."
156 times
I believe is the number
Act 3 ||I just Gommaged it||
||The first one||
Sacrilege
Act 3 ||The one in the Flying Manor has way more HP and I believe bounces more times before it hits its exhaustion||
||Strangely, it isn't even the highest damage Gradient move, though it is Void damage (and therefore not resisted by most enemies)||
Act 1 Ending ||
I am not okay||
Pat pat pat
Pre-orders are up for the monolith set: https://www.expedition33.com/monolith-set
Heads up, shipping to the US was $51, so it was $170 after shipping. Ymmv based on location
Also a friend I got into the game has since gotten some coworkers and friends into the game
skeptics will say it's fake
Act 2 ||I think the Volleyball Minigame is genuinely one of the most unfun, worst minigames I've ever played. It is so insanely awkward I am shocked they kept it in and playable like this||
We continue
A frigid take
The game director says people complaining on reddit about "awful" minigames "gives him life"
I think a certain measure of jank is intended
(I did have to turn my frame rate down for that by the way)
Bizarre that it affects that one minigame and apparently not much else
That's kind of bizarre he is proud of this? I feel like he is conflating the complaints as 'this is a hard, challenging minigame' versus 'this is fundamentally flawed and poorly designed'. Or this is a reference to the old RPGs minigames that were awful back in the day.
I found parrying easier once I turned my frame rate up
(and/or made it more consistent)
It is so weird how Act 2 Beginning ||When you run up against the edge of the raft, it turns your character away instead of keeping them forward. Like... Why lol||
Oh no
I don't think he's particularly proud of it
I think he thinks people complaining about dumb minigames is funny
The minigames are more clair than they are obscur
Yeah that's probably the better word.
if I completed the chocobo race in FFX I can complete this
I will get back to the volleyball
I have finished the other minigames
(I've only found the getting over it and the time race)
Yeah I liked the getting over it one
Act 2 ||Sirene|| ||Is the Lootbug on the intended path forward?||
||First time I've felt the lack of a in dungeon (mini)map||
||Yesn't. You should see it, but not follow the path behind it||
||I'm just using it as a reference point for this question||
I may need to do a lot of backtracking for 100%
||Lootbug -> Lost Boy / Manor Door room is the intended path, right?||
I got so lost on that place too
I'd have to check, but I do not think so
I'm not lost, strictly speaking, I just want to know where not to go so I can see all the side corridors
Oh you will know when you are at the boss there
Just like Himmel would want
IIRC throughout the game as a whole, there are generally lamps marking the True Path
yah, but that rule of thumb isn't serving me so well here
Personally, I abstracted things up a layer once I knew about that signposting, and generally found when approaching a crossroad, if I stop and think about which path looks most obvious from the intended approach, I can figure out the wrong path. That being said, I do remember that map having a massive loop, and a section I didn't explore until cleanup.
I think he did specifically say something along the lines “Yeah I really liked the jank minigames that barely worked in Final Fantasy that pissed people off, I wanted to make my own rage inducing mini-game.”
So I looked up what "petank" means
I wondered if it was "petit tank", as in a small bag of HP
I was wrong
Petank is French cornhole
What is that in British?
Oh yeah, I saw it's some kind of French game
Cornhole is a game about throwing a bag of corn at a hole in a board not very far away
Common game at like house parties, especially in less urban areas in the US
I kind of imagine the French would cringe at me calling it "French cornhole" but that probably means I'm right
Am I the only one who thought the volleyball mini game wasn’t even that bad?
that stuff from last night about First Strike is really turning into Bank Error In My Favour
Act 2 ||Sirene|| ||Maelle starting in Virtuous just shreds the dancers with her Free Shot, and she gets enough AP back from Kills and Marks to shoot everything in a single turn||
Act 2 ||There is a whole Verso/Gustave build for this||
With the Dualiso
Spend out on shooting, normal attack for a second turn, repeat
It's what I did for half the game
In my build, max
wait
so you shoot all your AP to zero
then base attack and get back 9?
Not as hard as you think with the right Luminas
I was figuring like, 4, max
isn't petanque bocha?
or whatever that's called in english?
the old person game where you want to roll a ball the closest to a point
like curling but with balls
Boules?
Bocci
Pétanque is a sport that falls into the category of boules sports.
Thanks wikipedia
(bocce is also one of them)
huh tyty
I had never heard those terms lmao
what's the neopets version called? I think that's the only time I've seen that game in english
Luminas
o I've seen 'lawn bowling' too
I know more or less what Petank means because there's a category of anime girl design called Pettanko (usually short women with no overt body proportions)
think Tatsumaki from one punch
Act 3 ||Flying Manor|| ||Well this Clea thing was suddenly very heavy||
I've found so many fun places! most of them say DANGER on the entrance!
Act 3 general ||Much of what is in act 3 would be main story in most other games, but it is just optional main story here||
||This is also like the seventh time I've thought to myself "man they never really did go back and explain x", only for them to then go back and explain x very soon||
I may need some guidance because I want to experience the story bits
||Go to camp, first||
I have been to the camp
I went to the huge tower too
Act 3 ||Maman's there, or at least a vestige of her, she told me to have fun and fight people||
Act 3 ||Have you done their sidequests then? You should have one for each of the non-Verso characters||
Act 3 ||I went and did the Esquie one, I need to go and do some of the others, I have to go to a floating island for another Axon I think and look for Lune's parents expedition||
I wouldn't have called it that
Well, except for the huge map marker
Ok, it took some backtracking but (Act 2) ||time to beat Sirene||
Kon, have you done Reacher yet?
||Kojima time is well after, right?||
Yes
Maybe?
I get the impression I'd probably know
I know it is on my map by that name
Act 3 ||Maelle's side quest ?||
Oh yeah
In that case, ||Reacher & Flying Manor full|| || Verso just can't catch a break, losing both of his sisters, like... back to back||
||Mhmm. That's part of why it feels so vital to me. Also explains why there are so many Nevrons and where they've all been coming from||
||Oh yeah, it's definitely got stuff to it. But no one sends you there, which is why I don't consider it main story stuff||
Act 2 ||Sirene all|| ||Lune what did you just do to her? Did you blow up? Did she?||
Act 2 ||Post Sirene & Visages|| ||None of these seem like good options||
The thing is, delivery can change the meaning of either
||specifically, based my understanding of her relationship with her parents, I assumed neither would be fine, regardless of delivery||
||I read the first one as a flat "how fun" ||
Act 2 ||Gestral Time Trial|| ||37.367 🥳 ||
OP
first time too
||I forgot to look at my rewards
||
||o h n o||
Act 2 Overworld ||Aww, they're just enjoying the view||
It's a date
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||"Teaching her Children to paint" Aah FFS. It was right there when Verso said his parents were artists||
||I'm still 60% on Maelle being the Paintress incarnated though. P=M is a new theory for me||
||Uh, P=Mum, not P=Maelle||
Hmm?
||Second apperance of the Paintress(?) inside the monolith||
||Oh, right, the vision/memory stuff||
Act 3 ||Endless Tower|| ||So how exactly endless is this tower? I'm on... 10.2? And I finally feel sufficiently stat checked to go do something else but I kind of wonder if 10.3 is the last one or if they go a lot further than that||
||11-3 is the last floor ||
Oh that does make sense lmao
Act 3 ||Axons in general|| ||I kinda wanna do a deep dive into the Axons and what it says about Renoir and his family that he portrays them this way.||
||Like… they feel somehow both unflattering and flattering at the same time, and it’s done in a way where I feel like it makes it clear that Renoir deeply loves them all.||
Maybe... finish the game first
||The Axons are low-key fascinating in a way I don't see a lot of people clock, and I want video essays on the subject!||
We need to do more
I did consider pitching a Splintercast...
You have enough staff for one at this point don't you?
I think just about
Especially if @shell minnow ever finishes the game
I mean
I hope there aren't video essays of this game yet
it's been out for not even a full month
there needs to be time for a full essay
a proper essay takes months if not years of familiarity
Brain bad lately :/
Understandable
Also there's a weird thing my head does where it goes "everyone is faster at playing than you and you're the furthest behind, there's no reason to play anymore"
been there done that with a few games
especially when trying to do game clubs with my friends lmao
Brain bad, indeed
The reason, if you need one, is to be on the now Argent-confirmed Splintercast
where are you up to Feather?
you might be lucky and I'm still behind you
I Stalked searched you. Yeah I'm still behind you. You're not the last!
TBH, I'm kinda surprised Jebus isn't all over this game. Though he is British, maybe that's why...
what does that say about me? 😔
I was doing Act 3 ||Frozen Hearts||
(seeing as I'm also british)
Very disappointed that the rest of the Staff isn't picking up the current official Staff game
It's okay, a large number of Brits have French ancestry, you're just listening to your noble roots
Don't past tense it!
ohhhh talking as if you weren't convinced because you felt the hype train leaving the station in front of you!!
Oh, I knew I was going to play it
I just got bullied into playing it sooner than planned!
||I got into Frozen Hearts and have been doing the first two enemies on a loop endlessly to get pictos into my characters and some levels||
If it's what I think it is, I tried ||Frozen Hearts|| ASAP in Act 2
and then I left because screw that noise
Yeah there's no real incentive to try and get ahead of the power curve in this game
I have successfully done some DANGER dungeons
not that one though
Act 3 ||Frozen Hearts|| ||The AUDACITY to try to call this outfit "Pelerin" like that isn't Clive Rosfield standing right in front of me, like shut upppppp ||
I have the final foot
I still need a bunch more
Not as many since [he] has been a permanent fixture on my teams
I ran around in this for a while
Did as you recommended
Credits
I am not easily given to tears but Sandfall earned them
So I popped on tonight to do some act 3 stuff. One thing led to another and I went down to the || Simon || fight.
|| Still around level 60 so I just skipped past everything in Renoir’s Drafts so I could check out the fight. Got to phase 2 a few times, but haven’t yet gotten a parry on a full attack sequence in phase 2 yet. I’ll get there though. Does it make sense for me to do this basically without having yet done all of the other act 3 content? Nope. But alas. Will resume the fight when I’m next on and see what kind of damage I do against phase 2 to see if I feel justified in trying to tackle it or come back to it later ||
^ ||I feel like it's way too early. Theoretically it's doable, I suppose, but P2 has like 5x the P1 health. The attacks are also trickier, so the room for error is much larger. I couldn't learn it well enough after like 5 hours and looked up a cheese guide (though I did see no-cheese no-parry/dodge video today). If you can do it, props to you, but I just ended up getting frustrated 😅||
^ || That’s very fair! That is more or less what I suspected would be the case. May still try it out for a while just to see how it goes but I imagine I’ll end up bouncing off at some point and going back to level appropriate fights ||
Alright, having spent some time digesting, some thoughts on the full game:
||I am more convinced than ever that Clair Obscur should be an anthology series. You could do a direct sequel to this, I think (Clea vs The Writers or another canvas or something) but I think the advantages of doing a sequel are tempered heavily by having to skirt around respecting both endings, and the fact that the canvas really is the game world, not the outside world||
||I am a little bummed that the Expeditioners ended up feeling a little secondary to the Dessendre family drama. Probably my biggest criticism of the game's story. Taking what we are told about the endings at face value, neither ending works out well for the Expeditioners (Verso ending obviously the canvas is destroyed, but taking it as more-or-less textual that Maelle intends to die here her ending also almost certainly results in the canvas' eventual destruction). I get that that is part of the tragedy of the whole thing, but it didn't feel like it was an angle that really got examined as much as it should have. I also think that just narratively Lune and Sciel started feeling sidelined by the act 3 plot. It is almost weird that Maelle chose to bring those two specifically back when she could potentially have brought at least Gustave back||
The game is extremely fun to play. I'm finding the challenge content late in the game extremely fun, and I think it is mostly pitched in such a way as the "OMG ASSET REUSE" crowd that often comes for games like say Elden Ring would seem kind of dumb for trying to levy that criticism here. Many of the challenge versions of existing enemies have altered animations, extended animations, or even outright new ones that make them feel very fresh relative to what came before. Very clever way to make the most of their limited resources and boy did they run with it. I've heard Guillaume Broche say he's been working on the combat longer than any other part of the project, and it really shows. Brilliant system
||If they go the anthology route, I think the things that are core to the identity of this game but not the plot and could be reinterpreted and repurposed in future games are as follows: gestrals, Esquie, Lumiere itself (as sort of an Ivalice, I can see "what happened to fantasy Paris/the Eiffel Tower this time" becoming a pitch thing for them, this also lets them keep the Lumiere track), the/a Manor (they work out of a building they call The Manor in Montpelier, which inspired the in-game manor), Lorien Testard and Alice Duport-Percier, some of the sillier enemies to especially include the Petank as a sort of loot goblin, and the general impressionist and surrealist inspired look. Maybe even the idea of Axons as these big superenemies with particular narrative significance||
||I think, on the subject of Maelle bringing only Lune and Sciel back, my impression was that she could bring those - and not Gustave - back because their chroma was right there, and pretty fresh.||
Act 3 ||That is a reasonable inference, but I kind of feel like it needed to be said if that is the case||
^ ||Maybe. There was a moment in one of the cinematics/cutscenes - I think when she and Verso escape from Renoir - where she grabs a hold of some chroma, has a reaction, and almost pockets it, which all always felt like a clear telegraphing that she is recognizing whose chroma that is, and is planning to use it to bring those people back. Also, later there is a comment about how the chroma in all the old expeditions is, well, old and Maelle can't do much with that, especially with her powers being this new to her. For myself, I think there's enough subtext to be knocking on the door of being text||
My mom asked me if I was listening to an Opera and I showed her the soundtrack
She really liked it
Approved
I did show the trailer to my dad and he loved the music too. He also seemed to kind of want to play but told me "I probably don't have the skill" to which I told him it's a matter of practice. (He has played only RTS his whole life on pc so anything that requires using a controller is pretty hard for him, though that's also still a matter of practice anyhow)
Story difficulty is there too, the skill required for that should be about enough to make it playable
Yeah... I mean I've seen try to play party children games with me and my brother and uh... yeah I do think it'd be difficult for him, but not terribly the game does scale in complexity rather slowly
and it is turn based even if it has the QTE
Either way I have my whole steam library shared with him so if he ever wanted to it's right there
You can turn on autosucceed for the QTE
huh, I will let him know that
I honestly thing it'd be good for him to get at least dodges though
Full game ||I agree with the Dessendre vs Expeditioners focus thing, and I think I'd like the series more as an anthology (though I'd be fine with a direct sequel if it didn't focus on the Dessendre, especially if it was from a Writer's pov for reasons that I think are obvious lmao). But the gestrals, the axons, manor, Lumiere and silly enemies I disagree heavily because like - those are Verso things (or well, Dessendre in general in the case of the axons lmao). Even the surrealism tbh. "In black, his sad eyes/Through gold, his laughter endures/In every colour a part of him"||
||I don't think it has to be the same Manor, or the same Axons, I think they can all be widely reinterpreted or dropped and then picked up again later||
Unrelated, full game ||Does anyone feel like they have a good grasp on how how the Fading Boy, Fading Woman, etc. fit within the lore of the world? Obviously we see the Fading Boy at the end, and it is literally the piece of Verso's soul that he put into his painting. Are the other Fading Boys we see... the same? Other pieces of his soul? Some other echoes of him? And even if soul can explain the Fading Boy, and maybe the Fading Woman / Clea (because she often played with with Verso in this Canvas), there's still the Fading Man / Renoir and Fading Woman / Aline. I feel like I can put together some wishy-washy "these are echoes of the painters" thing, but so much of this game has such good, solid explanations, I feel like there should be more here||
i thought they were yeah
They were...?
all ||the fading boys are the same||
Act 3 ||The Fading Boys in Falling Leaves and in the Workshop do not make sense if they are not Verso||
all ||No, I mean, I agree that they are all Verso. I was wondering if all of them are the same entity that travels/manifests around, or are they all separate... echoes, impressions of Verso. The one we saw at the very end wasn't very chatty, for example, unlike the rest||
||Ah, okay, yeah I definitely get the vibe they are their own specific echoes||
all ||my vibe was branches of the same tree, not touching, not connected except at the... root,base, whatever||
playing as slowly as I am is really making the lack of map truly obnoxious for me 😔
with the little amount of time I had to play I've managed to go around this area 4 times to find the exit and now I must go back to work
lovely 10/10
Which area?
||gestralt village|| like I went back in for whatever reason last time i played (i can't remember)
Lol
oh yeah, that place is a maze
||I did find the entrance, but I seem to recall being told there was a backdoor that had been opened for me... I ended up leaving through the entrance lol||
OH first bug!
not bad
^ || There is no backdoor. When you finish there you open a shortcut in the overworld so that you don't have to go through the Ancient Sanctuary every time. But the Village itself has only one entrance/exit||
aaah
Misremembering then
Or well, I know they told me that, I misremember going out
Damn i was typing that and a cynematic had started
It isn't super clear. I wouldn't have known what was going on if I hadn't found the back door on the overworld prior to doing the dungeon
I think I remember being confused for a minute too
Oh I had found that, I just didn't thikn that's what they meant. + 1 week break between playing...
You do have an overworld map
I recomend not taking a weeklong break, and instead allowing this game to consume your entire life
I am aware, but that's not going to help if i misinterpret what I've been told
Ah, Argent, thanks for the amazing advice I sadly cannot
a week long break wasn't quite intentional though
side not i just failed every QTE attack and got every parry right
what
skill...? issue?
truly
full game ||I've been enjoying Kala Elizabeth's videos on the game, if anyone is craving Content https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaKc7thzmTjbnFceeftf8soLDsY-d1wQ7 ||
also I believe that they've fixed up this because before in the overworld map I'd constantly be unable to run, every little bump would stop my running and now it's going smoothly
yeah they have though I think i had played those, well all the better
Same tags || I think they could definitely go this route, but it could also be really interesting to see a follow up centered heavily around the writers, potentially with a third game focused centrally around the writers’ and painters’ conflict.
Honestly there’s a lot they could do potentially. I think they have a world that is rich with possibilities. A game that has you bouncing in and out of different canvases could be really interesting too possibly.
I really want to know more about the writers though. The game I think does a great job at giving so much and telling its story while also leaving you absolutely ravenous for me. ||
Full game ||I’m guessing that if this does turn into a franchise it always remains focused on the painter side of things since “Clair Obscur” is an art term.||
Full game ||I think the clear route for spin-offs is a Super Mario 64 crossover, where a Descendre cousin goes to Italy to assassinate King Bowser and liberate the mighty Paintress, Princess Peach||
Outfits ||So half of the hair styles are just "steal her look", right? E.G. "Messy Bun" is Sciel's default||
Some are, yeah
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||Speaking of Bugs....||
Act 2 ||Expedition Log 70|| ||"Tomorrow is Here" but tomorrow didn't come for another 37 years
||
||Also, I find it interesting that these grapple points took "painstaking focus and skill", and yet Maelle was able to borrow some and just make a roof top parkour course||
||I'd need to double check the logs, but at some point there was a huge breakthrough in Grapple technology. Also Maelle already had easy access to all of the rooftops.||
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||It's Him. John Clair Obscur!||
||I'm not going to screenshot because I'm sure its been sent before||
It's a right of passage
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||Equipping the right drip gets me a +5%, right?||
it worked eventually 100% of the time
correct
Sorry for the ping but where did you find that Maelle suit
DLC I think
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||That looks like many cutscenes in sequence 👀 ||
alas it is 23:30
Silly, it's 19:30
Ah, but have you considered: Tomorrow is Sunday
countrtattack: my sleep schedule is bad enough already and needs fixing
Same
also: tomorrow is Sunday, and therefore playable
ok but seriously, do I have time tonight to see what's in there?
If you're trying to fix your sleep schedule, no
Soon
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||I want to poorly estimate the sequence around the corner there is at least an hourish||
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||There are break points, but you won't want to break.||
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||It's a question of "Can I log off between the boss fight that is surely coming, and the cutscenes"?||
Mmm
I vote save it for tomorrow
Agreed
mmm ok
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||I can't wait to waste all my playtime on the fight and have to log off anyway||
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith|| ||You have 2 fights left. You can break after the first one, but the second one rolls right into like 20-30 minutes of movies. Followed by a stopping point, following by another 20-30 minutes of movies||
okay I'll be a good boy and stop playing for the day
but thank you for the explanation Argent, this will help me plan my day
me playing the end of Death Stranding at 2AM 💀
Could be worse, could be me ranking in league at 4am
there's always a lower pit of hell
I was literally googling if the game was autosaving in the middle of the cutscenes
2 hours long 😭
The cutscenes alone are about an hour. The combat, of course, is skill dependent
It took me two days, like bare minimum 2-3 hours of trying
I just kept hitting that wall with my head because I was really underprepared for it
It wasn't the hardest fight in the game for me so far but it was up there. Definitely represents a spike in difficulty from the rest of the act
Hardest fight for me so far was probably [Act 3] ||Flying Manor|| ||Dualliste reprise||, strangely
||Had no issue with him the first time, killed him on the second or third pull||
Act 2 ||I killed Duallist first try surprisingly easy, I was even surprised how easy I beat that fight||
A Mass Effect enjoyer too
Full game ||I really want a game focused and from the POV of the Writers 🙏 ||
full game ||this is kind of why I don't really want a game about jumping between canvas, it'd feel too much like Mario 64 imo||
||They made one of those, but set in the modern era/near future. It's called Split Fiction. (I haven't played Split Fiction yet)||
||Yeah, I think there's a really fun universe where there's another game that's largely disconnected from this one - maybe we just hear about Aline and/or the Painters Council. And then maybe a third game that somehow weaves both. But part of this is my brain going "trilogy brrrr"||
Heh, I mean, kind of 😅
Full game ||what would be really funny is if Expedition 33 is the series name and Clair Obscur the subtitle for this one and they have to keep justifying the name for other games in the series
||
Veto
Full game, but also a book series ||the book series is Inkheart|| ||While I think it'd be neat if The Writers had some entirely distinct power set, I also think it'd be neat if they had an Inkheart sort-of situation going on, and had a generally similar power set to the Painters, but from a different direction (and naturally they saw each other as heretical perversions of their powers because of it)||
||I assume there's a sort of power-of-artistic-creation thing going on here. There's also something of an implicit idea that Verso is doing the "wrong" art in choosing music, and it makes me wonder if there's a Bard's college Musician category here too||
Full game ||Honestly, I kinda half-suspect the presumed Musicians are (at least seen as) relatively powerless, considering Sirene. I could 100% see Renoir implying that Aline changes the world with something that shouldn't be able to, amplifying it to its fullest, taking it beyond what it should be able to do||
Full game ||What makes you say that? Sirene is related to the most powerful of his kids||
The real dopamine hit of this game, even beyond a perfect parry chain, is watching the list of buffs cover the screen from all the Pictos getting proc'd
It's too much!
Full Game ||I'm probably not in the right frame of sobriety to get all the nuances I want across, so I'd prefer to take this up in the morning, but first off, Sirene (hopefully) isn't one of his kids, Sirene is his wife.||
||(assuming each person only gets one Axon)||
The ADHD energy of this is incredible

Its finally time, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is out and Jen (aka Maelle's actor) and Aliona (aka Aliona Plazanova - Marie, Estelle and Ulysse's actor) are playing Expedition 33.
There will be tears no doubt as we make our way through the prologue today and begin their full playthrough of Clair Obscur Expedition 33.

I believe they've already had Sophie's VA on
They've done one for Baldur's Gate as well
Yeah, well, that I am not watching until the 2030s
I have to sink my own 200 hours into that game first

wild
So
The QTEs
Some skills don't fully go off if you miss them
Some skills have riders that do not get applied if you miss them
A precious few have negative consequences if you miss them (Lune blows herself up with Hell, for example)
If a skill does not have any of the above conditions (and sometimes even if it does), what you get is a flat 20% damage
As far as I can tell there aren't any real exceptions in that there aren't any skills that get more or less than the 20% buff (unless as mentioned the skill doesn't fully actuate, like Lune's Thunderfall)
I deeply wish they were just numbers
Especially given they're occasionally wrong or misleading
Can't be subjectively "high" or "medium" when one ability does 7x base attack and another does 12x base attack
Mhmm
So one extreme hit can be smaller than 3 very highs
I also wish it was clearer about what, if anything, is attached to QTE success, though if it is anything it is usually at the bottom of the text
There's a few skills that fully fail if you miss the QTEs, but it doesn't say that anywhere
Lune's Hell does tell you that you'll blow yourself up if you fail, which is almost the sum total of acknowledgement of the QTEs in ability descriptors I can think of
That's the kind of stuff that I dock like 0.1 - 0.2 from my rating
It says "self-damage" but I've never not seen it do way more damage than Lune can take
I've never seen it do any damage at all 😎
It is spicy!
My Lune build involves rotating between Hell and Lightning Dance to make best use of Stains
For some reason, (Act 2) ||Verso's Perfection rating isn't going up, and idk why||
||I'm using Dualiso||
Hell also priming burn crits on Lightning Dance to make sure I get the most extra hits out of it
||It SHOULD be going up but it's not||
You are gonna need at least an act label on that
It's better to front but this works
Fair
What are you trying to do with him that it isn't working?
||I'm doing the Dualiso thing where I use all my AP on shots, basic attack, use all my AP on shots again, basic attack again||
It did go up when I used a skill
But not when I'm doing the shots
And idk why cuz I swear it was doing it on the shots before
How much it goes up is also reliant on how much damage gets done
It'd be embaressing if I missed that many shots
It doesn't seem to be going up, like, at all
Like it's not filling whatsoever
If the enemy gets healed off it or nullifies it won't fill
It's doing regular damage
Like, bad element matchup
It's a weakness in fact
I'll record it next chance I get
He's not in my active party, and I'm trying to beat a dude
It should work 🤔
Got the recording
I'll post it soon
Once it uploads to the XBox network
Lemme try on a regular enemy actually
Maybe it was weird cuz it was a boss
It IS doing it on the regular enemies
Let's try it on another boss
I think it doesn't gain on shields either if that is a relevant axis
It's not
It's almost uploaded
It might be just UI
It does look like your damage goes up during round 2
Yeah you're doing 190 base damage during the first round and then 297 base damage during the second
I think the gauge is just borked for whatever reason there
Strange
Oh you do have some riders in there throwing a wrench in that theory
Riders?
Ah
Oh yeah
I made the enemy Defenseless
Which would have boosted the damage
Empowering Attack + Exposing Attack
So I was Powerful and he was Defenseless
Yes
There is a chance that when he is reserve party his gauge doesn't fill at all
I see
Doesn't happen every time, apparently
This game is amazing!
We continue
Act 2 ||Inside the Monolith Big Boss|| ||Uhh... Revive Target? please?||
||Maelle's just gone||
||I find that sometimes visually I have no idea where my corpses are||
||Nah, this was Renoir casting Vanish||
Hm
^ ||He Gommages a party member and you can't bring them back||
I do believe that is an Expert-only mechanic
ahh, that explains it
Act 2 ||It is also a Gradient counter, not just a regular one, if you are parrying it||
TBC, I am not confused by what happened
right right - i used to fail it a significant portion of the time
I am just sad and surprised ||because I didn't encounter it in the first Renoir fight||
It does also happen there
Rarer move
(I am pleasantly surprised by how many rarer moves in boss fights there are in this game, moves that they seem content to have some/many players miss simply because they never show up)
Ah, I either countered that, or forgot about it 😅
I think I forgot about it, it feels very vaguely familiar
Similar to the ||Burgeon eating you|| move, only you don't get the player back with a stun
Act 3 all ||Simon also can do this, but only to downed characters. There's... some other boss I can't remember who will eat downed characters as well||
Several variations on PC removal
All mitigatable of course
act 2 ||I had to redo the first Renoir fight so often, and I feel like I got a completely different fight each time I tried, his moves were so varied and in different combinations/frequency||
Act 2 ||Renoir|| ||I have discovered a hack. If you die to the first half of the attack, he can't Gommage you with the second
||
I did end up doing that sometimes too
||Maybe this is why I don't remember the attack, I never parried it the first time||
As it turns out: https://www.reddit.com/r/expedition33/comments/1k6rl99/weve_made_a_bug_report_form_hi/
I am very confused ||I successfully Gradient Countered the Giant Beast Tail attack, but Verso (not the primary target) still took damage and died||
oh well, doesn't matter now ||Gustave's Revenge|| goes hard
Ok so (act 2 big spoilers) ||Verso=Lost Boy. Mom=Curator. I can't remember if we met both a lost girl and a lost woman||
||but one of those is Alicia, and maybe the other is Maelle?||
||Maelle could be the instantiation of either mum, Alicia, or a third TBH. I can't remember if we saw 2 daughters or not||
It's popcorn time, gang
||I thought Maelle was paintress, but now it's definitely that mum is paintress||
Act 2 ||monolith peak|| ||oh I'm a dumbdumb. Of course Dad=Curator||
||Maelle sure is confused about her face right now||
I'm going to stream my ass getting whooped
Act 2 ||Monolith Peak|| ||oh huh. She only gives off white flowers. I guess hat means it's Red for Renoir/Curator||
||TBC, I said this before the "Alicia, your face" line||
Act 2 ||Monolith Peak|| ||is this child abuse?||
Act 2 ||Monolith Peak|| ||I got to 10% on second phase
||
||on my first time there||
so close
Giving up for the night 😦
F
I also had to break here
Act 3 all ||Lune's companion quest boss, the big worm eats your downed party members and heals from it||
FFS
I wonder what glitches it uses
have at it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQsxoSCBxTc
I've seen several videos of people realizing they needed to sack the party so they could switch to the backup and get the foot
Can't slack off on the feet
I have an act 3 question
Act 3 ||I haven't gone back to Lumier to fight Renoir yet, as I've been doing side content, if I go there does that like end the game or is there big story after that moment||
act 3 answer ||fighting renoir in lumiere ends the game||
Bonus ||But you can load/continue from your last save and continue exploring||
Thanks gang
I'll keep roaming around until I find something that can tank more than two Stendhals at full power
where do I find that one optional boss
y'know
Guts from Berserk
Act 3 ||End of Renoir's Drafts||
||Dungeon in the middle of the sea in front of the Monolith||
Act 3 ||you'll need to unlock diving, if you haven't||
Act 3, but also sort of general gaming ||I do love that killing John Darksouls is becoming a common boss archetype in other games||
I've had my first game crash in 60 hours of game
Good track record considering this game seemingly pushes my cpu to 100% use
I am shocked you can play it
Me too
It's completely playable, the framerate is sometimes better but overall I think it's pushing 50-55fps constantly
doesn't look pretty tho
Act 3 ||Reacher|| ||I just had one of the saddest yet at the same time funniest text popups in this game, I fought Alicia and the game said "Alicia Burns" as I won the match because she died from Burn damage stacks||
||I know game, I know.||
||Now I feel sad about finding that funny...||
Act 3 ||Alicia is also weak to fire where Maelle is not||
Also
Act 3 ||I am starting to watch people's LPs, in some part because I want to see how early game foreshadowing hits, and I had forgotten that we get a tiny glimpse of Verso when Gustave and Lune first get teleported in the Manor to find Maelle. I never really thought about who left the directions to Noco's hut for them, but it was obviously him||
Unrelated, Act 3 concept art ||Interesting that this seems to suggest that there may have been a version of the Sunless Cliffs where you fight dark versions of your party, instead of 1v1-ing the mime boss https://www.artstation.com/artwork/AZKNGq ||
Act 3 ending ||in the fight against Verso, Verso is weak to fire too||
Act 3 ||Sirene's Dress|| ||Lune's mom fought that thing for FOUR DAYS STRAIGHT?what kind of beast was that woman, holy hell that's some anime badassery type thing||
||A badass like Lune doesn't come out of nowhere!||
Act 3 ||You can also hazily see someone, presumably Verso, pick up Maelle at the beach while Gustave is knocked on the ground||
Neato!
I was trying to pay attention there, but there's a lot going on
Act 3 ||Interesting that v1 Renoir is called "mirror Renoir V1" https://www.artstation.com/artwork/OvzZvv ||
||I wonder if that is/was internal terminology for the Painted characters||
||Yeah, maybe? Or an early idea, the Canvas is kind of a mirror universe||
Act 3 ||Sacred River|| ||Knowing Gestral culture this is probably very flirty and daring, like asking someone on a date.||
||I do love how, despite the faces being different, the vibe of this painting hasn't changed a bit||
^ ||Oh yeah, the characters', er... characters, are spot-on||
full game all ||eh I think Renoir and Cleo Maelle have a different vibe in this image tbh, Renoir especially||
full game all ||both painted and OG||
that's a way to start combat I guess
That's called being optimal
Act 3 ||Monoco friendship max|| ||These two are so gay it circles all the way back to being roommates.||
||Monoco is the little spoon||
I..... don't see anything preventing this from just being starting combat and having all three people just die lmao
I think Survivor might be keeping the right one alive
the other two do die though
also, full game ||damn, Une vie à t'aimer really is just, like the plot of the game, huh||
Mmm yeah
I suppose at that point why not just run The One though
cheaper?
Maybe The One doesn't work with the Last Stands?
If it works the same way as the blight status effect it should
Should also work with the SOSes
I don't know, man, I just work here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkjHa7Cz-Fs is a fun cover

His buddy set up a chat-gommage
Timed out everyone who'd been subbed for more than 33 months
That’s amazing
oh HYPE
Chris outdid himself with that overlay
this is making my day
something to ease the stress/anticipation of dnd FINALLY this weekend
oh great emote:
Oh, I bet someone will have done a 33 in the style of 💯
Probably also yellow, of course
Act 2 ||Monolith Peak|| ||THERE'S A THIRD PHASE??||
||this one is a lot more melancholy though. Opening with giving me shields is
||
||Paintress down 🥳 . We may never know what that 3rd phase was about||
IM doing the Act 1 ||gestralt hidden arena and the last guy is kind of annoying||
movie time
Break out the popcorn
And now the game truly begins
I mean, in a way. But in a way you can be done with it today 😅
I do wish they reset the health values for these cutscenes
You done did a hard battle, you should look a little worse for wear
I suck at parrying anything with more than one attack
This is really lame
But my fingers go into panic mode
whoops, that gave Maelle 2 entire levels
Act 2 ending ||oh storms, I guess the first thing Maelle has to paint is herself||
Getting called away to dinner just at that scene was the worst
Act 1 ||Esquie's Nest time|| ||I was going to go back and keep visiting unexplored areas but I've decided to do this first||
Act 2 ||Epilogue|| ||Damn, which dungeon is this painting?||
||Or I guess it's an axon?||
||That is Old Lumiere||
Act 2 ||Epilogue|| ||Ok, so I figured we were in a painting. But I thought it was more of a metaphyisical representation of one woman's grief over losing her family. Not actual magical powers, and "just" the loss of Verso||
I would probably label these as act 2 epilogue, to be on the safer side
Fair
Act 3 ||Do the Gestrals always come back to life because his parents would get new dogs when the old ones died?||
Act 3 ||We don't know that, but I assumed it was the same child logic that made Esquie the most powerful being ever - a simple desire for good things to last forever||
I forgot my 🤔
rude of you to leave us 🤔less
Act 3 Mechanics ||All three of Maelle's new skills look busted, I'm surprised to hear that Stendhal is the most meta||
^ ||They are busted, but Stendhal is your boss-killer, for obvious reasons, and the biggest challenges in the game are bosses and volleyball||
||Also, I am now reading https://www.wikiwand.com/en/articles/Stendhal for 100% unrelated reasons||
wtf is wikiwand
Wikipedia wrapper
Act 3 ||I kind of like that Maelle, who is known to have been fond of reading and sounds to me like she may have had some Writer tendencies, has a move named after an author||
Act 1 ||Esquie's nest||||I have been trying to figure out how to get onto the left hand side of this place and it was all just doing the stupid cinematic so the column would fall
||
same, Usha
||bamboozled by the giant talking marshmallow||
||on the other hand I figured Esquie would unlock those areas outside so this was a good call 😤 ||
Act 3 ||Personally I assumed that combined with "but they don't come back the same" was Gestrals as an idea developing as the kid comes to terms with death. (See also, Monoco the third)||
Act 3 ||Monoco the Third is what inspired my thought, yeah||
Act 1 ||Esquie is the best Mon Amie||
Overworld general Act 1 ||up to Esquie's Nest|| ||does the cleaned up terrain stay cleaned?||
It does not
Act 3 ||Stendhal is good because it is one of the baseline highest hitting moves in the game, before applying the Virtuose buff (or any other buffs, like Mark or Critical Burn), and then it is also Void damage which is never resisted||
||Even in non-boss encounters it is good for deleting a troublesome side enemy. Plus it deals an extreme amount of stagger damage as well, opening it up to follow-up||
||Additionally, with the Cheater Pictos (which you get from the big guy walking around in the ocean on the west half of the map kind of near Old Lumiere, and it causes you to go twice in a row), your second turn will clear the Defenseless debuff and give you an opportunity to get back into Virtuose stance for counterattacks and for your next turn||
And that's the Maelle "meta" in a nutshell
||Or just Stendhal again||
It is more damage per turn to take the time to get back into stance
And you don't spend the intervening time with Defenceless on
Ah, but only if there's another turn
The window of "Maelle doesn't end the fight" and "Maelle doesn't come up again in the turn order before someone else ends the fight" is a narrow enough one so as to not be worth building around
Act 1 ||I am glad fanartists are focusing on what matters - Maelle, feet, and Golgra https://www.instagram.com/p/DJKe9qZv5XP/ ||
I’ve been spending my nights hanging out with my husband watching him play through Clair Obscur 🖤 Such a beautiful emotional journey it’s been. I’m obsessed with everything about this game. I wanted to make so much fanart, maybe cosplays too 😝 But when I saw Golgra, I knew I had to draw her.
#clairobscur #expedition33 #fanart #clai...
Alright that's the [Act 1] ||Manor|| done
I only had to look up one door and that was because I just didn't see one hanging out in the open
I'm currently in Act 1 ||Abbest Cave 😠 ||
for some reason it takes me a little bit to get into the parry rhythm in this fight
and by the time I do I have 1 person left with 10 health lol
and then I get it almost perfectly
done this dance 3 times already
I found this to be one of the easier bosses, but it took me a few tries for the pattern to click
I suppose "rhythm" is more accurate
Yeah I dipped on that real early. Didn't actually come back for it until soon into act 3, where it was a little too easy but not way too easy
Damage differential is just way too high to try until at least toward the end of act 2, at least on expert
It's more like... 3 turns pass between my attacks and my attacks again
which makes some buffs or other unique stuff kinda usless
yeah, might be a little early for you
I will have you guys know, I died because I pressed rt instead of rb
someone can get a laugh there I guess
If you are concerned about wildly outstripping bosses like this one, a lot of the challenge content will recycle bosses (especially the chromatic ones) at a point where it is far harder to overlevel them than it is on the overworld
I'm good got it now
only got hit once 😤
Love being wrong!
you gave me the power
nothing like proving someone wrong 😈
the thing was obsessed with Maelle which was doing the highest counter damage which kind of helped
Lune got 3 levels out of that lol, well, that's it for today
no worse feeling than a boss attacking your weak counterattack characters
YEAH, I was marking it and then Act 1 ||Sciel would keep getting attacked which had a weapon that it'd resist and that'd eat up the counter damage and the mark, and you'd think "well dodge with her you idiot" but listen, my fingers don't obey me that much, I'm doing one thing or the other
||
yeah...
I'm so bad at parrying in every game
I'm surprised at myself in this one
though this game is kind of easy-ish
At least for now
I suppose I'm good at parrying in warframe
It does
It does
clearly noob
I lied, I'm firing up the game again 😔
Just 20 more minutes
good, good
You sure about that
Whoo boy that sure was a 17mil hit
delish
ended up being 25 minutes because this area ended up being much bigger than I thought
okay it was 30, fine
I had to explore enough that I'd know where I left it next time
Okay
I got Lune to 93 and Maelle to 92, and have completed every combat challenge except the last one, before grinding comes up as A Thing I Need To Do To Hit 99
Kind of remarkable actually
I have absolutely no feeling of how far along i am, which i suppose means I'm nowhere near the end of Arc 1
yeah, that's pretty close to where I was
Where are you, Usha?
In the story... Arc 1 ||I finished Esquie's Nest and need to go recover his ... pebbles up on the cliffs but I was clearing up the areas (aka collecting a bunch of music records)||
I have 2 more unexplored areas here before I go do what I'm supposed to do... but not today... not today... right?
Do you want to know where in Act 1 you are?
hmmm not particularly I think
coolio
I'm the type of person to compulsively check how many pages I've read in the last 3 minutes so it's probably good for me to not be able to tell.
all gucci
I don't know what to do with Lune gameplay wise
she's so far the only one I haven't been able to optimize
||weapon: Free stain on shot
Typhoon, The revive for 5 or 3 yellow, basic fire skill, and the two "4 stains for big damage" skills, and one free slot.
As many "on heal give buff" pictos as you can apply, and any that branch out from there. Any free shot pictos. double AP on parry because I run that on everyone. Enough bonus energy to get 8AP on first turn.
The goal is to play Typhoon first turn for +2AP to everyone and all the buffs every turn thereafter, then shoot for free stains and play Mayhem or preferably Genesis. I seem to get double Ice the most often, so the fire skill lets me sacrifice a turn to play Genesis next round||
Act 3 ||OH THAT'S WHY THEY ARE CALLED RECOATS I'M A MORON||
||I just got that with Nick saying that lmao||
||OH MY GOD||
Elemental Genesis is a trap
Hell and Lightning Dance are both stronger
EG has value for being multi-element
Idk, I feel like 3 elements of exactly the right colour happens a lot less than 3 diff + a light
Typhoon gives you a Light and an Ice stain already
Then I normally use an Earth ability for the third stain
And I'm using the Colim to keep myself in Light stains
What does Colim do again?
So normally on turn 2 (with cheater) I can do Hell and then Lightning Dance back to back
50% chance to generate a Light stain any time you consume a Stain
On turn two I am hitting my second EG 🙃
And then damage bonus for consuming Stains
Well notably I don't have cheater
Not that hard to get
And yet impossible for me to have had until today
Well, yeah, but act 3 is where buildcrafting actually matters
🙄
Any way nick, that's my build, do with it as you will
I like Mayhem build
free stain on aim weapon, some starting AP
- ap generation on marked and stuff
four free aim shots into Mayhem for anywhere between 10 and 50% of an enemy's HP pool depending on the enemy
I might swap out thermal transfer for a higher level skill. That's the one thing I have equipped that I didn't mention
I've done it, now at least it won't feel like Lune does nothing when she has to jump into the fight
my main team is still ||Sciel/Maelle/Monoco to stack up buffs on Maelle for Stendhal||
Oh hmm, I don't how good a primary support lune is on the off team.
I guess she's still damage 2/3 - 4/5 turns
I don't like support Lune
She has healing but nothing in the buffs department really
Act 3 ||I didn't know Maelle was Vergilpilled||
||I completely forgot she does indeed have a katana||
Heh
The game director is extremely Vergilpilled. In addition to amateur Sekiro speedrunning, he also has done amateur DMC speedrunning
I knew there had to be a judgement cut somewhere
this makes me want a devil may cry RPG
and then I realised that already exists
though that is more of a coincidence than anything, not based on DMC
it's based on resident evil
You can stick just about every buff on the heal off Typhoon
Plus giving everyone AP
And Typhoon is surprisingly spicy
I guessss
(The initial hit is garbage, it is the followups that are surprisingly spicy)
Act 3 general ||There's several of him around||
Great fight!
Act 3 ||So when is Gustave returning.||
||He just went to buy some cigarettes, sweetie, he'll be back soon!||
||New Game Plus at the very least
||
You know what I don't understand? Burn
Like, obviously I get that it's damage each turn, but I don't understand how it degrades, or how multiple applications interact with each other, or how the damage is determined
I do know that each individual stack lasts 3 turns by default (can be modified)
I think each application also is individually calculated based on who applied it and how hard they applied it before the full stack of burn damage comes off, but I also think it scales more than just additively
Like, if Maelle applies three burn stacks worth 10k damage each and then Lune applies three burn stacks worth 10k damage each I think you get more than 60k damage / turn from it
Testing for it is very hard, since many sources of Burn apply in waves even from a single move
Yeah, that's a part of it, it's tricky to test
Looks like the base calculation of a burn stack is [how much damage you would do if you just attacked]/2 • [multiplier], where multiplier is dependent on how many stacks there are, giving diminishing returns ([act 3] ||Maelle|| appears to also have an intrinsically stronger burn multiplier)
Applicator's defense stat also appears to reduce Burn stack damage and it is unclear if this is a bug
What a mess
I've been consistently unimpressed with Burn damage and being reduced by defense stat would definitely explain why
Act 3 ||There's also some weirdness with what happens when the character who applied the stacks dies. I know when I was doing Simon the first time, I was using Burn Verso and would have 650-700 burn stacks at the P3 transition that would be ticking for 0 damage afterward because Verso was dead.||
I wonder how something like Versatile affects it too
(After using Free Aim your base attack goes up by 50%)
So, for the rest of a Free Aim burst on a gunslinger build, do the burn stacks get spicier?
||Simon can remove the dead from the canvas, had that happened here? I can see that being a very specific part of the interaction||
||The Abyss||||He had been removed from the Canvas, but it feels like such a specific interaction for them to have hardcoded in for one optional fight. I might go have him put some stacks on a different enemy and then die the next time I play just to test it out though.||
Act 3 ||Abyss|| ||I doubt it is an interaction coded into the fight, my guess is that the damage is based off him and that the calculation doesn't know how to handle him being functionally no longer part of the fight. I expect you'd get a similar result if someone'd been eaten by the Burgeon, banished by Renoir, or if you called in your B team||
||That's fair, it might actually just be the backup team thing since the phase transition is just him removing the first party from the Canvas to force you to use the backups.||
I’m trying to think of when the last time I played a video game with an antagonist I found as compelling as ||Renoir||
I don’t know what level of spoilers I should tag that as. Start of Act 3 just to be safe I guess.
Like… okay maybe the Princess from Slay the Princess, but that’s a weird situation and I don’t know if I’d even call her an antagonist.
In general I’ve been feeling kinda underwhelmed by a lot of recent video game antagonists.
Like if you were to make a list of best antagonists in video games, I feel like you wouldn’t get many from the past decade.
It’d mostly be villains like Glados, Vaas, Andrew Ryan, Handsome Jack, etc.
Well I got through a lot of content in act 3 tonight
Did act 3 || lune, Maelle, and Monoco friendships, frozen heart, flying red forest, endless tower up to 10.1 ||
Act 3 || Endless tower || || They have some really cool fights in here ||
Act 3 ||I think that's more based on how burn is coded; I think that removing a character from the fight is basically adding a x0 multiplier to the damage||
it'd take me some time to remember the 2020s games but I could do it
Act 3 ||Or in someone's Canvas perhaps||
The thought did cross my mind
Wake up babe a final (act 3 spoilery) music video just dropped ||https://fixupx.com/lorien_testard/status/1927379610984947955 ||
Expedition 33 was released 33 days ago...
To celebrate, I’m very happy to share with you the last music video we recorded:
Maelle: https://youtu.be/PZ4DHDX-pQk
When we recorded it, I knew it would be the last time @CharlotteHpf would embody Maelle, for the final song of the soundtrack and the end of a huge chapter in our lives. That moment wi...
Well
That sucks
Maelle performance & motion actress: Charlotte Hoepffner
Composed by Lorien Testard ft. Alice Duport-Percier

Lyrics - Maelle:
Je t’aimerai toujours
Je rêverai encore
Pleurerai encore
Aimer, oublier et rêver
Pleurerai pour toi
Maelle a une vie...
There we go
That’s actually incredible
I think I might be too dumb to understand what's going on
I think I have over 100 hours in the game now across PS5 and PC after last night. Steam says 69 hours and the PS5 in game save had said 30-35 hours. Team is around level 80 on PC
Really solid video. Spoilers through the end of act 1: https://youtu.be/06ZJQjNFH4A?si=sFwn3qEv6hN6tRCS
Expedition 33 is a game made by the fictional French "people" and it might just be the best use of the video game medium I’ve ever seen. It starts strong, hits hard, and never lets go. But what exactly makes its opening act so unforgettable? Let’s break it down.

Interesting stuff about how scaling works for weapons. Something I’ll definitely be keeping in mind moving forward.

where do you get Lunes outfit in that?
Full game ||I just realized, "We Lost" is in 3/4 time... Is our fight with Simon a waltz?||
||Nah. Too fast. I'd describe it more as 6 than 3||
I need more levels, lots of dungeons still say DANGER
Just pretend you're DW and see how they feel
Oh I've already explored a lot of DANGER dungeons and gained a lot of resources from them
but some are
scary
Does nick actually know who DW is?

Time for more gaming
do y'all just open the game and be like "damn I could stay in the main menu with this song for a little while longer"
I just got the album to solve that problem
it's not like I can't go listen to it whenever I want
but it hits at that moment and it does a little lulling
This is not ideal way to play
Last time she looked at my cable like this i hadto use alot of tape, and the time before that she cut off internet
I have left my game on the title screen
Hmm i don't think today I'm in the mood to just die repeteadly 😔
I've got Preach's second VOD going and he's going on about a theory involving.... the French Foreign Legion?????
I went back to play Honkai Star Rail after being Clair Obscuring for a while and I was like
"Wait which button do I dodge and parry with?"
forgetting that despite both being turn based rpg honkai doesn't have a dodge or parry button
My goose is cooked
Man, there’s this line from after you clear ||The Endless Tower|| in Act 3 that is gonna really rattle around in my brain for a while.
“||The only thing you owe your parents is a live you enjoy.||”
yeah, that's a good one
Act 2 I guess ||https://x.com/gabbiecasso/status/1927330931389386975 ||
the gang
pros of having to wake up at 4am: can catch preach stream live
(stream, end of act 1) ||Preach being his usual completely sociopathic self about character deaths and being totally unfazed by Gustave's death is SO typical||
Act 3
||I revived Noco but he doesn't remember anything, and when I talk to him Monoco just starts sobbing because he misses his dad.||
||I find it really sweet that Noco was Monoco's master and caretaker, basically his dad despite it looking like the opposite||
Preach, Act 2 ||honestly the all SPS build is killing me. watching him unlock Verso and immediately dump all 66 stat points into agility did give me psychic damage||
i just parried with my left hand! that must be my luck for the entire day so might as well just cloes the game
how are you parrying on left?
or is this some KBM thing?
no no, it's very dumb
I just laid back to start playing and i left it right before a boss last night
and the fight started and i was mid removing a clip from my hair
and i forgot the boss attacks first
Usha invents a new grip
so i just tried really quickly to press rb with my left hand
and i got it right
i was clearly in a terrible mood to do this yesterday cause i got it first try today (did it 3 times yesterday)
this was uh... Act 1 ||Yellow Harvest|| ||Glaise or something like that?||
oh god what is this sequence of attacks ||chromatic orphelin|| 😭
||I keep getting killed by a spoon, this is unpleasant
||
i might need to change my builds here there are 6 turns going in between my attacks
||guys i fear the spoon now 😭 ||
This is usually my sign to leave and come back later
Checking out Preach’s day 1 stream vod. The theorizing in the prologue so far is hilarious
|| By a… what? I don’t remember a spoon enemy 👀 ||
||unless she means the frying pan||
changing my build did fix that haha
I'm too stubborn to leave
||this, the frying pan guy attacks you with a ladle, the thing says "attacks you with a spoon"
||
got it to 25% now, it's just the one ||spoon attack ive managed to parry once ever||
|| Oh the one with the frying pan on top of its head? ||
yeeeh
Prologue || I somehow missed the Life Enjoyers on both of my playthroughs ||
I love how he's always asking "does this mean anything in baguette/parlez vouz/etc"
Whew that took longer than I realized
but it was kind of satisfactory
Based on the extremely limited Preach content I've watched, I don't trust him to engage earnestly with the story and not clown on it 😔
I would definitely say that is a misread of him. He engages earnestly, but a lot of the Big Emotional Moments tend not to pull him along because that's just how he is
Probably try his Daily Preaches on this first since I think that'll give a more holistic look at where he's coming from for the streams
Act 1 ||Yellow Harvest|| ||So these 2 people stayed here for a whole year til their gommage, I thought the other people hadn't disappearede because they died of murder, but these 2 just stayed here as statues despite dying through gommage 🤔 ||
I don't remember exactly what you are talking about, but I wonder if there's a different explanation...
||expedition... 38? journal is written the day before the gommage (I think), perhaps there is another explanation and didn't actually survive til the gommage. However their corpses seem to just sorta exist there (unlike other corpses around)||
It is more of an observation than a conclussion I guess
||I can definitely think of some records that are left behind without statues that also mention being close to their gommage so I think maybe they just got ganked because they're hanging out in a dungeon?||
what
There are also a whole bunch of "give allies buffs on death" Pictos
So the strat there is to auto-death on two and then use all the last-one-alive Pictos on the last (usually Maelle)
lol
that's fantastic
my cat has decided the mouse is the place to nap and she keeps very slightly moving my camera
Not a way I prefer to play but it is very funny
I don't think I'll do that, I'm already doing glass canon parry life which is not a good choice with my serious skill issue
But it is fantastic that it exists
Mhmm
It is very all-or-nothing
Genuinely one of the triumphs of this game is the quantity of builds that legitimately work
Act 1 ||log 59||
This game sure has a lot of flavour
wow I'm done with that area, it was much bigger than I expected
I think i got 2 more areas here before going to main quest
||unlike that nevron||
Also my vibe on Preach writ large is that he does very earnestly appreciate a well-crafted story (and he's heaped nothing but praise on e33's story so far) but he also does not feel beholden at all to having the "right" reaction or playing up his response for the audience
Act 1 ending spoilers ||Like, some of the gameplay stuff and Gustave's journal made him suspect that Gustave was going to die, so when it happened, he wasn't particularly fazed by it. And... he does definitely get a little bit of enjoyment from his audience calling him a heartless monster. ||
Act 1 ||some camp stuff|| ||I had a building up feeling that the old guy and the masked woman are gustave and maelle. Like i thought it at the beach in a "lol would be funny if" but it's starting to burrow in
(I honestly have no clue what's going on at the moment) (please don't explain anything)||
well actually, what's going on here is–-

I do have a question actually
though entirely unrelated
actually 2 questions General I guess ||do camp cinematic scenes accumulate, should I be camping every now and then to get them? I don't see any reason to camp ever except when it forces me to so 🤔 ||
And then Act 1 areas (?) ||There's a place... red woods? It lets me put chroma on a place, I did that once, and now it's asking 10k chroma, is it going to ask for more after? I am not particularly keen on just dumping my chroma there for nothing so I'd rather accumulate it and dunk it in one go||
Answer ||Yes. It'll end up asking for a lot||
I guess ill skip that then
i don't think i even came across that place 🤔
wild
it's amazing how much there is to miss in this game
I'm starting to feel the need to dedicate my whole wake time to the game, frick
Hmmm... I'm just going to the stuff on the map
I'm physically unable to go forward without checking everything I can see
...i just checked back in because im at my next airport
apparently preach's found a boss he's stubborn-moding on for the past 2 hours
he had to succumb at some point
