Hello Scapers.

This GameJam alongside some combat stuff and other little bits I've been working on a design for a new piece of content, that looks to expand on the original rune essence mine.

The intent is to create a new area that resolves multiple pain points at once (In particular; access to essence, and low/mid-level crafting) but in a way that feels natural to the game.

It's not fully fleshed out into exacts but it means it's a good time to get your feedback on anything & everything to help it evolve.

This is necesssary imo. Combat being the best source of essences just feels weird, kind of like needing to use the wilderness for core runecrafting (before the addition of wand/staff imbuing)

I like this a lot subject to rates. definitely feels weird to have abyssal creatures being the only viable source of essence late. would suggest, given lack of non-essence rewards beyond non-meta sources of crafting xp, that targeted essence rates at BIS should be circa 35k essence/hr

I would, however, note that between events, this risks having the standard mining feedback loop before perfect juju - namely that the player is encouraged to be paying attention by stamina, but that the chance to make additional inputs isn't adequately rewarded by the current max stamina bonus, such that it's kind of boring because you're watching nothing really happen. the minor change I'd suggest as a consequence is to substantially increase (for this content only, at first) the benefit offered by maintaining maximum stamina. I'd suggest initially it should be in the region of a 40% buff.

The other minor cause for concern atm - a lot of the exciting part of this is the events, not least because they're giving very big buffs (I'd expect an FC to hop up around this assuming all events require presence on the world at the point the event ends, rather than when it starts). given what's happened with DSF events, would it be possible to design events such that event pass thresholds are calculated based on the number of players who participate in the event rather than the number of players who are present in the area on the world?

Unstable essence is converted into experience in stacks of ten every 0.6 seconds, and up to 60 stacks are converted in a single interaction.

Some more recent content was released without it's related elite outfit working, like BGH and the Fort
it's possible that the RC or Mine outfit wouldnt work at all to begin with, just like the master construction outfit doesnt work in Fort
A new outfit just for this could be the start of slots mattering outside of combat, I pitched cuz [Sponge was recently ranting about it a bit ](#design-chat message)

Theres a certain point where spells are so samey that if the rune consumption is change to be streamlined through the levels, the dmg scaling of the spell stops mattering so much
You could effectively condense 20 spells into 4 spells. And for Ancients you could make 16 spells into 8 spells only (aoe vs single target)

I wish I had more meaningful feedback to give beyond I love this entire pitch, but I don’t. I guess maybe my only concern is that while I love events to break up skilling I don’t want this to turn into a DSF case where it’s a community event thing that you pass of fail as a group. Community aspects improving it fine, but look I’ve failed enough jellyfish punching despite putting in lots of work cause others just weren’t interested. Which is fine but that’s kind of the problem, there is no like middle ground so that those of us that are interested in doing it can succeed or get any consolation without those that have no interest.

Also can we have Rues flying around in the area? If he is gonna be our RCing pet I’d like him to appear in more RCing areas.

    If I have level 105 Mining and I'm at the level 105 hotspot, will I exclusively receive essence slabs, or is there still a chance to get lower-tier materials like slivers, lumps, or chunks?

Feedback:
I believe receiving only the material matching the hotspot level (e.g., only slabs at level 105) is the cleanest and most rewarding approach. It reinforces the sense of progression and avoids cluttering inventories with lower-tier resources.

  1. Integration with the Existing Rune Essence Mine
    Suggestion:
    Have you considered making this an expansion of the current Rune Essence Mine? The idea of a surface-level mine for traditional rune essence and deeper layers for improved essence gathering and Exalted Essence would be a logical and immersive evolution. This also helps new players organically discover the deeper mechanics as they progress, offering a smooth transition

  1. Empowered Hotspots
    Feedback:
    Three minutes feels short for empowered hotspot durations. Increasing it to five minutes would better support planning and allow for more meaningful bursts of efficient Exalted Essence gathering. Maybe consider an unlock that achieves this effect, or adjust the base duration?

  1. Inventory & Processing Experience
    Question:
    Do shards stack? I’m assuming they do — and I think it’s important that they do for inventory management and overall system flow.

  1. Essence Processor and Multi-Step Conversion
    Clarification Question:
    As I understand it:
    • You mine slivers, lumps, chunks, or slabs
    • Break them into shards, granting Crafting XP
    • Then process shards into rune essence via the processor, granting more meaningful XP (Crafting or Runecrafting? It wasn’t explicitly stated in the post, but I’m assuming Runecrafting)
    • Alternatively, you can turn in raw materials (slivers, chunks, slabs, etc.) to an NPC for quick, reduced essence (but no XP)
    Is this accurate?

Feedback:
If so, this multi-step process is logical and thematically sound — it makes sense that raw stone would need to be refined into usable essence. However, rather than relying on what sounds like a purely mechanical processor, I think there’s an opportunity to add something more interactive and immersive that ties directly into the Runecrafting skill.

New Suggestion:
Instead of a traditional machine, perhaps the center of the room could feature a Runecrafting-style altar or magical focus — something arcane and elemental, or a mix of arcane and industrial.
Functionally, this altar/focus would allow you to convert shards into rune essence using your Runecrafting skill, with interactive options such as:

• Quick Convert: Instantly convert all essence shards into appropriate essence. Low interaction, reduced XP, and similar to how runes are generally crafted.

• Manual Channeling: Choose to actively siphon energy through Runecrafting, creating essence more slowly but gaining more Runecrafting XP and potentially producing exalted essence when using regular rune essence shards — or additional exalted essence when using exalted essence shards.

• Raw materials (slivers, lumps, slabs, etc.) can alternatively still be turned into the NPC for a reduced amount of essence and with no xp or additional benefits. This way you at least give an incentive to craft them into shards first if able and, rewarding players who engage with the intermediary step. It also makes more logical sense, as you're trading raw unrefined/ non-crafted materials for an end product.

  • Curious about where this new mine would be, there are limited locations that would make sense lore-wise, assuming it has to be somewhere the Stone of Jas was for a long period of time and be somewhat accessible - Fist of Guthix, maybe?

  • If there's a new abyssal familiar, we need the Abyssal guardian. It's a funny little guy.

If anything, I'd say throw various runespheres into the Runespan overflow event, they're annoying to go out of the way for in the runespan and they feel very much not worth the time within the runespan, and if they happen to progress this achievement, that'd be really neat.

Exalted essence, the greed in me wants to say it ought to be a large rune multiplier, that's the the best way to get my interest in doing this content long term.

XP feels kinda flooded as a reward space whilst the abyss/attuner exists at it currently does, given Mod Frosh has changes to base rates in the works, I don't think RC will need more XP?

Stackable/AFK does nothing for me unless it was to be outright better than normal abyss running, which it ought not to be, also it just kinda ends up being a competitor to runespan/proteans? I'd be happy if protean ess aren't the best option somehow by the normal gameplay offering better options, but like, is that an option?

So going over a few things.
Currently xp you have scaled as a placeholder is extremely strong at lower levels. 45 minning requirement for 55k xp an hour means you bypass the next 15 levels in a short span.

The exalted essence should be tradable if you are adding restrictions to them like no abyss usage. Herblore habitat has ecosystem that might be worth considering, where none of the in-between or starting steps are tradable, but the end result is.

Also might be worth having exalted being gained from non empowered nodes, at a low chance, to have players new to the activity get introduced to them earlier. That helps feed into discovery, curiosity, and experimenting.

While I always like the rune multiplier bonuses, I worry about how magic currently is most runes are already fairly cheap and generally low value. Increasing supply without magic seeing it's time in the sun come again and thus rune prices going up could see this sink runes into the bargain bin. Which is not automatically a bad thing, but would be a bit of a bummer to see profits in skilling go down. Time runes already ran into the problem of not enough consumption Vs supply.

This whole concept sounds great, but giving normal pure essence would make it less appealing as abyssal creatures already give so many per hour, this essence could give additional xp like 1.5-2x depending on the rate of gathering, and this is just a wish of mine, a way to "buy" runes through runecrafting, like "enchanting" the anima stones we have for X gp per, and now it gives (100) or something bonus runes, it wouldnt be profitable to do just reduces dailyscape for buying runes
and throw in a skilling boss, this is a perfect setting for an rc/div/agil type encounter to subdue a threat for rewards

Another idea: could the stuff gained from this mine be used to craft both flavours of the runecrafting multiplying anima stones? If the recipe includes pure essence, then it also solves the issue of pure essence obsolescence. This combined with necromancy runes (and abyss runecrafting) would keep it relevant.

Sorry for interrupting, just caught up on this gamejam idea. Commenting mostly on the fact of mining essence and turning them into shards;
Do you have any numbers in how many essence shards are expected to be gathered per hour? From slivers, lumps, chunks and slabs.

If we consider that the current max amount of essence gathered with cb is around 20k/h, at lvl 105 crafting/mining it should at least give 2000 shards/h with the current placeholder value of 1 shard -> 10ess, meaning you'd have to mine 133 slabs per hour. So one slab every 30 seconds. I'd like to see the numbers even higher tbh at that high level of mining/crafting but has there been any word on the balancing to be as appealing as putting on some cb gear and afking abyssal demons?

Really like the ideas, few notes.

  1. exalted essence should definitely be tradable and be good exp/rune production.

  2. I feel like exalted spots should be the "active node" like time sprites from arch rather than an occasional event.

  3. Anima springs sounds like it should give anima stones as a reward.

  4. Thieving for summoning secondaries I'm a fan of. A new essence carrier would be cool but also a RC familiar that does something else would also be cool i.e. give it a scroll effect that is like the time rune spell that was scrapped that refilled your pouches. Perhaps once every 2-3 mins it can draw essence from your bank.

  5. In terms of other rewards, perhaps a chance at finding a new type of gem, perhaps a "pristine essence fragment", that can be turned into 2 amulets. One to increase rune yield and another to increase exp gained.

Right now the only source for unlimited Mud Runes is killing the Dagannoth prime. There was a staff released as a part of treasure hunter that doesn't work for irons. And the elemental staff from Master clue scrolls.

Are you open to including some danger in this activity? A little more risk vs reward think say soul obelisks and how they quickly kill you. Not for the whole thing mind you but maybe a rare spawning essence vein replacing one of the others like tears of Guthix swapping tears or how Croesus front resources occasionally turn more rewarding. That hurts you or steals stuff from you or something in return for better/more essence.

Love the idea overall and I'd LOVE more lore/background ideas you have for this. Because conceptually it seems rich with lore opportunities. This feels like its worthy of being a reward to a really cool quest or other. Some points:

  • Exalted essence feels like it should be just consistent to gather in a way rather than happening every now and again. It can be active to gather rather than AFK, but as long as every world has an exalted spot up at all times.
  • With the random events a consideration if they give RC xp should be "is it better XP/hr to just chase these than do RC proper". Players will absolutely spend their time chasing these events if it provides a strong XP/hr. I'm thinking Menaphos rep as a good example here, where you spend your time chasing Obelisks as they appear. I am not against this at all (personally I love these community driven methods where you work with other players scouting worlds to chase events for big XP) but it should be considered as to whether or not this will be an option.
  • For the above, would you consider having one of them be an exalted essence reward as well? Just as another way to get it. "Exalted Essence Guardian" maybe?
  • Would also reccomend changing one of the world mining bonuses into a world RC bonus of some kind.
  • With exalted essence I feel like the goal should be "Expensive but fast" RC training. Current RC methods you get a ton of resources back in runes, while also getting the fastest XP rates for the skill. I'd be in favour of a method that doesnt give many runes back, and/or costs a large amount. But in return gives a significantly higher XP/hr method. Something that is a pure resource/money sink. (Maybe theres room to create a spirit shard like secondary for exalted essence as a pure GP sink)
  • Consider how exalted essence would work with Soul Altar due to its different mechanics.

Sweet, I think my preference be that it be injected into the events side of the activity rather than the core. Well actually I have two minds of this.

One it could be done like senntisten shadows or the Jang shi vampyre in the arc, forgot its name. Where there is a zone in this area that is continuously harmful to remain in and gets worse the longer you remain but is much more rewarding in some fashion. It could be that once you exit the zone you have to recover a bit before entering, could be you can enter and exit a limited number of times before cool down like your body reached its limit. Sorta like BGH having a cool down on its critters but perhaps not as severe?

The other way would be to just have a few risk vs reward random events.

The core of the idea i've little to add to, but the random events sound a little uninspired to me. I think there could be more done there, especially for rewards.
Rewards could definitely be better, instead of skill boost for X minutes. How about some teleports to certain runecrafting altars (could even be straight up the tablets that are already in game?
How about an event, where suddenly (for X amount of time) all you can mine/process is dark essence?
What about a (very) rare drop that acts as an add-on/upgrade for the runic attuner that improves its effects?

Edit: I'd also like to see it work well with the new materials for the upcoming invention update.

I am a big fan of these cross skill style methods, even more so if they can be used to either provide quality of life or fix an existing problem. Something that might be nice to see added to this is a way to eat excess talismans from the economy.

Essence Mining - Not much to comment on or add here, seems a good spread following on from rune essence at level 1 mining and pure essence at level 30 mining.

Essence Processing - Converting into shards would need to be beneficial to go for the highest level resource (if slivers only make 3 compared to slabs's 15 but are 5x quicker to gather it'll feel like the higher unlock isn't useful), then converted into essence. Biggest thing here would be balancing.

Exalted Essences - Imo should be untradeable but nice to add some variety, this area seems like the one that would best play into Frosch's runecrafting gamejam as there was a lot of feedback on removing the demonic skull/XP buff from the Abyss (so the Abyss would be more optional for the teleport/threads rather than feeling required to train outside the Runespan).

Random Events -
Essence Guardian might feel a bit annoying needing to pick up the talisman from a different area to start but otherwise the mechanic seems fine. The reward it'd be important that the type doesn't feel useless (eg. the type is mind runes so no one bothers as they're not worth enough?); maybe something like depending on your RC level it'd roll on a different table for what type it is so players new to the area aren't missing out from a soul guardian and higher level players don't feel their time is wasted on a mind guardian?

Runespan Overflow I narratively love as currently the Runespan feels too disconnected from the majority of the skill (both narratively and mechanically) despite spanning the entire range of levels. A mining buff after siphoning from essence creatures feels a little odd but could be that we're "energised" from the magic that leaked out?

Anima Springs I think I'd tie into also being Runespan related, both events have us siphon into the essence we've created there and end with a mining buff so I think work better as variants of the same thing? Runespan Overflow which can take the form of essence creatures entering or from rifts leaking anima through. Feel very similar already with similar rewards so imo make sense to tie together.

Evolving Outcrop could be very annoying as it interrupts the main training, forcing you to engage where the others are optional buffs, imo this is the weakest of the events.

Abyss Jail Break similar to Runespan Overflow I love tying in other parts of runecrafting. Would these creatures be aggressive as this is mainly a skilling activity? I'm not sure I like the bringing in combat to increase the time, however maybe tying it into rune guardians to fight for you so skillers that haven't brought any combat gear can create/awaken guardians to also increase time by having them fight the abyssal creatures?

As above, maybe some other event involving us making/using rune guardians to our benefit.
