#Not treating the Major Update like a fortnite event
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
tldr: spread out the unreleased changes/content across multiple updates to make update hype last longer
I think someone is missing a bit of important information as to why it’s being done this way that I will gatekeep from them
i need me some yapping session sometimes but thats the point
all its gonna do is like what triple the playerbase for 3 weeks
just like a travis scott fornite event
then its gonna return to the good ol battlebit we know today
#bbr-news message third paragraph partially explains why everything is being done at once.
Waiting is hard and this long of a wait was definitely not the plan, as we've seen the plan change multiple times. Theres, a whole lot to unpack in this "suggestion" but in general, it doesnt work this way, and it hasnt been working this way. Future updates are slated to be monthly.
my first sentance is really about it, drop the things people are hyped about first like the new sound design and map remakes
so basically, because no deadlines
well from the devcast im pretty satisfied with all the progress
but im worried the major update will be underwhelming for the sustainability of the game
A partial change is not the plan, not the desired intent. They have chosen to release a huge update then move to a more normal cadence. #bbr-news message
nah the update wont flop
it would just surge the player base
for lets say
ideally 2 months
3 months
then its gonna prolly decline back again to the numbers we see today
yeah
big changes might alienate the current playerbase, and if no new players come, it will be for nothing
You have hit the crystal ball territory of prediction. Patience is key, doomposting is easy.
or it moight be really good and everything will be fine
the new players will come trust me, compared to battlefield 2042 this new major update will divert casual battefieldnplayers
in some margin
but the point of the suggestion
is sustainability
not the amount of content nor the bugs
to be sustainable yes u need content and a refined game
A good portion of earlier this year was spent setting themselves up to be financially sustainable for future development. The things you have pointed out as concerns are, already long accounted for in things they have publically shared
but content and a refined game does not mean a sustainable playerbase
true
Oki on a dev cast specifically has discussed the flow of content and modern "season" cadence that games use.
either way, I don't think this suggestion is possible,
from what I can tell, the dev process is just "merge everything into main branch and hope for the best"
Its technically possible, it is counter to the plan they have chosen. overhaul is coming out as one big 3.0 patch, there arent going to be steam updates or server wide pings until its ready. We on day 237, it aint changing courses now.
I don't think it is even technically possible at this point
well im sure by now the dev already acknowledge these things but it doesnt hurt to emphasize on it from a player side perspective who actually wants the game to be alive again
It is. The merge issue they had did not involve deleted files or lost conent, it is a matter of time spent cherry picking code changes back out. The decision was made to keep going all in.
Q: Why haven’t you released a hotfix for issues like the black screen bug? Is it true that the BBR source code was accidentally deleted?
A: While the BBR source code being deleted is false, it is true that our branching was messed up. we unintentionally pushed a changeset to PlasticSCM (the version control tool that we have been using since 2022) with additional updates where they were unfinished. We would have to spend time removing the features we implemented back to the build, which would further delay the update. We are fully aware of the impact of these bugs and in the future, we will prioritize fixing major issues before committing to long updates. #community-announcements message
I would imagine would probably be another 6 months (not including bugfixing/testing)
I.e., "probably don't want to do that" amount of time
ah yes the pessimistic vs the optimistic battlebit community debate
I dunno what the actual development is like (only the devs know that)
I am just comparing what I do know about their dev process to some opensource projects
and if its a banger it will breath new life into it
