A Barrett M82 or similar anti-material rifle could work well in Battlebit, if properly balanced. Here are some ideas:

  • can penetrate one breakable wall and hit occupants of light vehicles for reduced damage
  • similar damage to infantry as the other sniper rifles, increased damage against vehicles
  • partially damages breakable walls, multiple hits to break a small piece, like a pickaxe
  • slower bullet speed and higher bullet drop than other sniper rifles
  • slower cycling but automatic, as they're semi automatic (unless one of the bolt action models would be chosen)
  • only 5 rounds magazine available with no upgrades in size
  • no muzzle upgrades

It would fit a specific use (hitting entrenched enemies) while staying less effective than the typical sniper rifle in standard situations.

Anti-material rifles are essentially used whenever the armed force wants to hit a target behind a solid cover.

These are the ideas I mentioned above that relate to vehicles:

  • light vehicles (so excluding things like tanks) can block shots to the occupants with their structural elements. In this case, the rifle could penetrate the vehicle, hitting the occupant (with reduced damage caused by this interaction).
    For example, think about hitting the driver of a Gas Tiger on the side through the car door, instead of hoping it finds its way through the small side window; or hitting the occupants of the attack boat, which seems to have bulletproof glass otherwise.

  • most weapons can lightly hurt light vehicles, and sniper rifles can also minimally damage heavy armored vehicles. Instead of proposing huge unbalanced features, I envision to boost those values for an anti-materiel rifle, that would help damage vehicles without being too effective.
    For example, the M200 deals 15 damage to light vehicles and 5 to heavy ones; the anti-material rifles could deal something like 25/30 light and 10 heavy.
    It wouldn't replace the RPG or make it unfeasibly effective, but it would be easier to scare vehicles away for repairs, or finish off the burning ones.

I could see this being used to set fire to humvees. Make it so it can cause a fire at higher health instead of when it’s low. Would force someone to repair the humvee or soon ditch it before it explodes, while it still can take damage from other sources without exploding instantly.

Making such weapon worthwhile would require giving it not insignificant damage. 100-200 L vehicles damage per shot, or something like that. It just asks for people spamming helis from 500m away, especially Littlebird's that alredy die super quickly to small arms.

Give it a small degree of random spread so that it is infeasible to use as a sniper rifle.

100 damage means you're shooting down a little bird in like 3 shots 😅 and the main point of such a weapon would be hitting infantry behind breakable cover, which would also happen to be better than other snipers at damaging vehicles. It would make sense, I wouldn't exactly turn it into a light and fast RPG.

As for heavy vehicles, I didn't really shoot many shots against them with a sniper, but I recall the hit marker and a small number popping up 🤔

Red zone camping is an issue that isn’t exclusive to snipers tbh, and this wouldn’t even directly help those players. If anything it make it easier to cause damage to those people

Honestly, with how fast, chaotic and cover sparse this game is, its kind of given. And this will not change without making the game slower and less chaotic, with more cover
