#fix legs going through obstacles when prone

I know other fps games have that issue as well but legs sticking out of obstacles when going prone is an issue.
A simple fix is to not allow prone to happen when the back of the player is too close to a thin obstacle.
I've spotted enemies in buildings or behind fences because of this and im sure someone has spotted me before for the same reason

Orrrrr, something like this

#

Instead of laying your stomach in the ground, make it lie down like this

But the issue should be resolved in some way, you can be even shot through the wall, not just spotted

you just kinda scoot forward, sit down like that and try it

If we could choose our stance like in arma 3 it would solve a lot of problems like thse

We had it to where your legs wouldn’t do that
It caused issues with people hiding in corners being invincible
Hence why it’s back to legs sticking out

#

Since EA release (little before that during playtest era if I recall correctly)

oak yacht
# trail surge how do you crawl lying like that?

In this game you can crawl while firing a weapon. You don’t use your arms to crawl. So I will argue the game logic would still be consistent if you were able to crawl around from that position, but as you moved forwards you’d shift back into a regular prone position

We have peek and gadgets to deal with corner campers. Also pings. Having legs stick out of obstacles as a feature just sounds dumb

In what sense are those things related

Why would any of that mean people would be invincible because their legs were invisible?

steady hull
oak yacht
#

I am not convinced of that

steady hull
#

oki fucked something up to where the damage would ignore the character in general if the characters legs were behind a wall
i mean the same even happened with heads

oak yacht
#

So that isn’t an issue any more

#

Right now you can’t shoot people through walls despite their legs being visible through them

steady hull
#

fixed it by making legs go thru the wall

oak yacht
#

While that doesn’t really make sense, that means at one point your legs could not go through walls?

#

Where did they go instead

steady hull
#

yes
but your character would be invincible

#

hence why your legs go thru now

oak yacht
#

If that’s what happened then that seems like a really lazy fix tbh

steady hull
#

your entire body was invincible even eye to eye looking at someone

oak yacht
#

Should have actually fixed the invincibility rather than making people stick through walls

#

Sounds like more of a temporary solution

steady hull
#

well you gotta find ways to optimize it without hurting performance
and thats one way

oak yacht
#

That doesn’t make sense either

#

If their legs did not go through the wall, why should there be invincibility applied under any conditions

#

Right now there is conditional invincibility but that could be removed altogether were it not for clipping

steady hull
#

do you read

#

Judging by how other games like Insurgency dealt with it, the most realistic request might be to have the game push the player away from the wall when they go prone so their legs don’t clip through. It has its own set of problems though… namely like going prone then feeling your character slide a little bit. NWI had a sizable dev team for a indy game but I guess it was just technically not feasible to make the game clip the legs without sinking a ton of dev time into it

oak yacht
#

Your explanation doesn’t sound accurate / make sense.

steady hull
#

when invincibility was a thing
if i pushed my legs up into a corner they would be invisible on the outside but your character would be invincible on any 1 on 1 gunfight

#

i mean the head one also existed xD

#

ahh here it is

oak yacht
steady hull
#

dont ask me
ask oki for that

#

im not oki
i dont know why he choose THAT way to fix it

oak yacht
#

The point is that having legs not clip does not mean there has to be janky invincibility, because it could be removed for the legs altogether in such a case

steady hull
#

besides optimization wise

#

well now your just ignoring the proof right in front of you

steady hull
oak yacht
#

Nothing you’ve linked contradicts my stance on this. Or really answers what I was asking

Understand what

light halo
#

He says that legs not going through walls was making the player immune to damage.
But like what does that mean? That they shouldnt fix legs going through walls because one of their ideas was bad?

#

Just because that approach failed it doesnt mean they shouldnt fix this

steady hull
#

game had no legs thru wall before
caused invincibility
removed due to causing invincibility on the full character

if the legs went thru the wall they would be invisible and invincible on the other side
so that passes down along the entire body on the other side (watch said video)
i dont know why oki brought it back besides only understandable reason for a performance (not checking ticks when legs go thru walls along those lines)

#

both are easier/optimized way of doing it
but caused issues

oak yacht
#

My point was that that problem no longer exists

#

The legs could be removed visually in the current state and it wouldn’t make a difference

steady hull
#

and yes it could make a difference with how many ticks its trying to read
either server side or client side

oak yacht
steady hull
#

maybe if your read what i said before it wouldnt have been a back and forth for 15+mins

oak yacht
#

So were you speaking as though we were at the time when it was changed originally?

#

I interpreted your things as being with respect to the suggestion’s viability in the present

steady hull
#

i gave a reason as to what they did to fix it
it didnt work so they went back to how it was
