#Squad Leader Voting System?

Okay so I didn’t really have a good name for this suggestion, but that’s what the text underneath is for, right?

It’s pretty well understood at this point that there’s a weird amount of people in this game who get placed in the position of Squad Leader and then do nothing with it either because they don’t know how, didn’t bother to learn, or more often than not, straight up don’t know that they’re the Squad Leader.

Instead, at the end of a game, maybe there can be a way to rate your SL. Something like just pushing 1-5 on your keyboard on the same screen as when you vote for the next map.

The idea being that, as time goes on and a person gets a higher or lower average score, they’ll be more or less likely to be placed as an SL at the start of a game. That way, people who want to play SL and are decent at it have a higher chance of getting picked to do it than the people who don’t want to, or aren’t good at it.

Could also incentivize people who aren’t good at SL to see what higher rated people do so they can improve and raise their own score.

EDIT: Somebody below mentioned a “opt in” option to be made SL and I think that sounds neat, so I’m throwing it in here. Credit to it goes to @dapper vault.

I like the idea, though leaving it to a vote and having more interactions in the between games section has some issues like:

  • ~25% of players even map vote, adding this will be likely way less voting
  • players can just 5 star vote their friends and then always be squad leader when not playing
"Okay so make it so friends can't vote" ok sure

A better way of going about it is to base it off of squad leader score, more active and better squad leaders are almost always top score. So base it off that and start tracking "Squad leader score per minute" SLSPM

# limber hamlet I mean nowadays you can just steal it by requesting orders, but ideally I’d like...

I’m an active SL when I get it, and I do this cause 90% of the time the person request spamming is some sniper/tank sitting in spawn, helicopter pilots (no, you don’t need lead for that unless you’re a dedicated heli squad we need relays), or a lone gunman that sprints into the open with no awareness and dies on repeat…. Instead of pushing into a point with my squad so we can take control of it and either fortify it or move on to the next objective.

Request spam is annoying. If the request fails after 1-2 attempts and you’re still not satisfied with the SL, just make a new squad at that point and others will load into it or join it.

But back to your suggestion: voting as a way to pick the starting SL is better than the current system (Russian roulette and hope a clueless player or troll doesn’t get it), so I’m not against it. Although as steve mentioned, people would need to be made aware of the system, and there would have to be checks in place to prevent misuse of the system (rating bombing/boosting) if this is to go through.

That being said, you can also just make a new squad at the starting and have peoole loading into the match join your squad if you’re quick enough.. (going back to the “make your own squad” point basically, fair. But I feel it should be mentioned regardless)

TL;DR for non-Essaying readers - voting is good on paper but ultimately ripe for abuse and that needs to be accounted for to make it feasible. Spamming request orders only annoys people. (make your own squad if requesting orders fails 2+ times) and generally if you want to SL, best way to do so is to make a squad at the start of the match so you’re basically guaranteed that role, with people joining your squad as they load in.

Oh, add to this suggestion an "sl opt in" function as well

I think you misunderstood the point I was trying to make. The only reason I’m doing that is because the person currently holding the spot is actively not do anything with the role. No marking objectives, no putting down beacons, etc, and the only reason they’re doing their job is because somebody is essentially pointing out that they aren’t.

That being said, it would be very easy to just prevent people you’re friends with from voting for you, or alternatively the game could simply do what Steve suggested otherwise and do it based off of average squad leader score per minute.

Though at the moment the way squad leaders earn points in that way is, to my understanding, only based on if your teammates capture and objective you mark to take. So there would have to be more ways for a SL to earn points besides just hoping your team does what you point at them.

Maybe 200 points or so for a squadmate spawning on a beacon you put down or the like.
