#A recon players take on the sniper issues

Hello everyone, I'm fifthbloodline.

I'm a recon main playing in the oceanic region. I've decided to outline my suggestions and my playstyle in the hopes that it will enlighten some players on why balancing sniper is so complicated both in solo and team play scenarios.
There are 3 playstyles for recon. Sniper, infiltrator and aggressor. I think each of these playstyles are valid and should be equally supported. I will have further context and info in the pinned comment.

  1. Tone down the opacity of the sniper trails and make it fade at a short distance. you can see the trail if shot at but cant see recons fighting on the other side of the map
  2. add halved spotted time and faster weapon swap to passives
  3. Drone: passively spot players when not in use (if you point the drone at a specific point and are within ~100m)
  4. make sway a sniper feature, meaning medium scopes too but a small amount just enough that it throws off long range shots without holding breath.
  5. add an infiltrator class of weapon (see BFV's commando carbine), fires subsonic ammo (<346m/s), extremely quiet, killing with a headshot within 150m. this gives the recon something else unique to use. see examples in comment below.
  6. make suppressors reduce your bullet velocity 5-10% (they're too strong rn)
  7. reduce the move speed penalty for the M200 (campers aren't moving anyway)
  8. reduce map "dead zones" areas with no cover especially near or between objectives
  9. make grass render in long range scopes, a target can be laying down thinking they're hidden, cant even aim because foliage blocks their sights but to the sniper they are easily visible.

let me outline imo what are the 3 playstyles for recon.

  • Sniper: support your team with intel through use of your drone and your scope, eliminate HVT's and suppress enemies from range.
  • infiltrator: get behind enemy lines, use your grapple, constructs and equipment to dig in and act as a respawn point for your team
  • Aggressor (bargain basement assault): get in nice and close, hunt HVTs, tanks and IFV's with C4, play the outskirts of the battle.

The only viable snipers are:
rem700: most agile
L96: excellent ammo economy with extended mags
M200: Duh, highest damage fastest velocity, shite movement. a campers dream.

Here are the issues. sniper rifles are extremely specialized tools, a sniper rifle and the recon drone are the only thing about the class so you really cant fault going anywhere else for DMR and battle rifles. they also rely on hitting headshots and finishing enemies to be viable, and in a game where you can spin 180 in a jump it's nearly impossible to hit someone who knows you are there.
let me make this clear, getting sniped is a punishment for being stupid, you only get killed if you stand still, run in a straight line or are in the open without cover.

this combined with every gun being able to kill you easily within <120m incentivizes sitting as far back as possible. Even taking the rem700, maxing out draw speed and equipping a fast pistol you are still rarely beating an AR even if you shoot first.

the sniper trails are a cool idea but counter productive, it severely nerfs the infiltrator playstyle and lights up recons whenever they take a shot.

Infiltrator weapon examples:

Tec Target Schneider XceedR
Black Collar Arms SBD
