Battlefield 4 had this wonderful system where potential changes were tested on a sort of "beta" branch. These could be changes that made it into the game, or changes that never saw the light of day after being tested. I think it'd benefit the development of the game greatly to allow the community to help out more by testing weird, potentially game breaking updates in a community test environment (CTE). You could allow people to access this by switching versions on steam.
A lot of games have been using beta branch/experimental branch update testing lately - early access especially - so I don't see why it'd be a negative for the game. Also, more testers = more free work and "faster" updates for players who want to participate. So win-win.
