BB_Map_Basra
[2x2 km map]

**Description: **
You will be involved in a epic fight on a group of island with a crushed container ship at middle of map.

Map locations and biome
City located in a Pacific Ocean. Map divided by north and south part. North part does contain military service like a radar and bunker. South part is constructed for tourism services like Airport and Hotel.

Starter tips
• The crushed ship itself does have good protection from sniper fight inside, but it become a bottle neck for ground forces, do not be shy to take a boat to deploy on a enemy part of island and change rules of war.
• Bunker itself is a huge structure, if you are getting lost , follow the EXIT signs.
• North Island does have a big mountain with vulcan, its a one of favorite spots for snipers, you can try to take a APC and destroy all the jungles on a mountain to make snipers feel less comfortable.

**History of updates:**
2022 Jan 21 - Release of map rework V4
2023 Dec 09 - Release of map rework V5

are you allowed to talk in these? if so id just like to say that your maps are good and all but remaking all the old maps in the same style makes them feel homogenized. which is sad as they all used to be so unique and different. A point can be made that the new ones play better but i miss the individuality personally and talking in game chat and in servers, a lot of people seem to feel the same.

#

i don't mean to be critical just a observation from a big fan of the game

It's not a bad map by any means but the differences in elevation were a big part of the old map's identity. In particular, the roads that went around the sides of the cliffs gave attackers abundant cover to pull interesting flanks off. Now that spotting is a thing, it's extremely easy to sit back with the drone instantly revealing anybody trying to cross into your half of the map.

What do you have against elevation? Even the sniper island is useless cause it is so flat. What a nonsensical change to what was one of the BEST maps in terms of gameplay, teamplay and coordination.

If by "best in teamplay" you mean full of great spots to for both sides to spawncamp one another, sure lol. It was also awful for driving around ground vehicles other than for driving up to the hill and camping C (which would also get hit by snipers from all islands around it).

The new map does feel too flat in certain parts, but it's not awful overall. A couple of steep hills that let snipers cover some limited but relevant angles should help get some of the old vibe back without replicating its failings.

In my opinion the redesigned Basra should've been its own new map, it's so different now and I liked the old one too

Feels like everything is so open any flank attempts quickly get shut down so it mostly ends up being a stalemate around the ship. And yeah, Vilaskis is right in the sense that snipers aren't the biggest threat here, but instead there's a combination of obstacles and structures that ensures that no matter which weapon you pick, you will stumble upon someone who outguns you in their preferred range.

I think the choice of making the broad side of the ship face each team's side wasn't a good one because of all the empty space left around it. On old Basra, the ship acted as a sort of bridge that would let your team push past the no man's land.

#

It's got the same syndrome as new Dusty and Zalfi Bay where basically no matter where you are on the map, if your gun has a long enough range, you're flanking SOMEONE, if not half the server

#

Note my use of 'flanking' here, i.e. killing someone from a completely unexpected angle (which feels bad for them). Flanking definitely has its place and clever use of it should be rewarded, but it's way too easy on a lot of maps right now

#

But I said yesterday before it was removed, there are definitely good changes on this map, such as the removal of the bunker

I meant the revision history (discord topics), to see what has changed. (include version number in topic title leave the old post for what it is.

Keeping the previous Basra release in rotation is another discussion, personally I don't think the current and previous release are that similar to warrant the same name (I hope you change your mind😇 ).
Because there is no "Basra V4" Discord topic I can't compare the satellite / mini map images to check how it was before.

# stone fractal I meant the revision history (discord topics), to see what has changed. (include...

there is no need to have a topics for old maps due they will be never ever updated or support new gamemodes.
It will only flood topics and spread my focus to maintain other maps/topics/data.

New map perform better for user experience than old one by data, player have more intense fight and sniper kill distance was reduced compare to old version, mean player can now pre-fire enemy sniper within 300 m range.

Just player need to learn how to move on map and keep play on new map to provide more data about new version of map to improve it.
Just it take time to resolve some other issues/places.

We must go forward, not backward or have anything that will hold you like a ancher and not allow game to evolve/improve.

Old maps may comeback only to community servers, due they can disable those maps in vote pool localy or as short time event on official servers.

IMO old Basra was one of the best maps in the rotation and i suppose is backed by players consistently voting for it in between matches. New Basra plays and feels completely different which is sad because the old one IMO had something to keep most play styles happy. As I understand it maps are being reworked in part to improve performance etc. but it does feel like the sniping play style is being hindered intentionally in this case and I hope this isnt a trend for future maps/reworks. Whether you agree with that playstyle or dont, it is still a fair chunk of the community that enjoy popping heads at a distance. It would be a shame to lose more players because they were fazed out...

Snipers are much more annoying on the new map in my opinion. All the added cover gives them so many more hiding places than before. In old Basra, you knew where they going to be and they were fairly easy to spot and act accordingly. Use smokes if you want to advance, or shoot them from an unexpected angle, or just take a vehicle and flank them. Some of these new map reworks just take a sledgehammer to any interesting features the map had and make them feel samey. All you'd have to do on old Basra is throw some palm trees and bushes on the beach for some added cover from the hills and give people more incentive to go to other parts of the map.

Similar to Salhan, once one side loses all the capture points, there is no chance to leave the main base.

Old Basra had a considerable open space in front of both main bases, allowing players to try to leave and reach other capture points. In the new Basra, there is no such opportunity.

Invasion 64vs64 is really not a good experience on the defending side...

The objectives are placed in a way where you have a frontline going (which is rather fragile but that's for later)
but it's only 2 objectives which make up that frontline and where the frontline is, are the people so the third objective which isn't on the frontline doesn't have any people on it which allows attackers to just sneak past everyone and backcap with no resistance whatsoever
now to another annoying part, the enemy/friendly territories
(this applies to the stages after the first one which actually has 3 objectives making up a line, but they are still bad to play on)

After losing the second stage you are completely screwed if you are on the C objective because on one side you have the enemy territory which pushes you to retreat, problem is that there is no space to retreat to except for water
i hopefully don't have to explain why these two factors alone are already really bad for a fun experience

Now to the problem which made defending in the first stage so bad didn't help the other stages either
the open forest areas which nearly lack any cover really mess with the gameplay and defense, especially when the buildings are all singular entities which don't allow to effectively shoot out of to defend, instead acting as a box to force you into just to be sniped or flanked
my problem with the forest areas is simply that there's no flow to them, no lanes and no positions to hold
it is not a viable option to try to defend the area behind a rock because there are so many enemies to all sides, even if you build up defenses

So to summarize

  • the enemy/friendly barriers lead to bad flow
  • the objectives are placed in bad spots
  • huge areas of the map are effectively barren when looking at them from a "tactics standpoint"

After playing New Basra numerous times, my constructive feedback is the map is currently not fun and not meeting the desired goals stated in the announcement, for the following reasons:

  • The map is extremely flat and has a number of rather dull chokepoints
  • The map doesn't really have any personality, is it an island, an atol, why is there a broken container ship in the middle?
  • There's a lot of useless space, whilst it's a large map the actual playable area is very limited
  • The features feel arbitrary and uninteresting
  • The container ship is just plain unfun to fight around
  • Due to the layout, snipers are actually more of a problem than on the old map
#
  • Areas in Yellow:
Entirely unplayed areas either because it's part of a safe zone or it contains nothing of value, feels like a lot of wasted space, why does each base need an entire island (the largest two on the map no less).
  • Areas in Purple:
The main chokepoint, it honestly feels like a painball arena and is very punishing to play in, the low water in areas prevents a lot of movement and it feels like you're just a duck in a shooting gallery, high-ground to the north and south make it more obnoxious to play in compared to the old ship, which you could have very good fights up and down. The airport isn't much better, the bollards and barriers only let you play peekaboo.
  • Areas in Green:
Actually fun and playable areas, these feel a little less arbitrary and you can have good fights, the primary issue is lack of direction as all sites are pretty much open from any angle. The north side of the map could do with a couple more buildings and the south side of the map between A and B could be a little more interesting. Also, not sure why each side needs two bridges, just put one wide bridge.
inland oasis
#

oh i forgot to mention, on conq 127vs127 those bridges are just a vehicles worst nightmare and still rather annoying for infantry

@opal sluice I don't want to shit on your hard work without offering suggestions, so here's some and a badly photoshopped map:

  • Lose the base islands as they don't really serve a purpose, just merge them in with with the neighboring islands and add some geometry to protect them a little bit.
  • Have one point either side of the main choke, this will force the fight to be more focused and might improve some of the gameplay around and inside the ship
  • Remove shallow water from the ship except for the edges, have the bow and the stern of the ship in deep water so you can't just walk around without being punished and have to fight through the ship. Also move some containers into better positions and make sure there's a way on each side to jump on top of the ship with a tall hesco block (teamwork makes the dream work!).
  • Rotate the airfield 90* and move the capture point further up, this stops the runway being a sniper gallery for the middle of the map and adds an interesting and defensible choke point up north.
  • Move the lighthouse and observatory closer to the middle of the map, but add cliffs so they can't just be directly captured from the shore. This is mostly to move them further away from the main spawn but also allows a better flow between points.
  • Move point C to the south island: This acts as a mirror to the airfield and actually makes this part of the map both useful and usable, industrialize the south coast a bit with docks and warehouses to add some interest.

I'm not saying this would fix all problems, but I think you'd end up with a much more interesting map with varying areas to fight in.

#

The flow would look something like this

cyan flame
#

Idk looks like blue has an advantage here. I rather see blue "having" or being "closer" to 4 Objectives, while red only has 2. The southern Point I would move entirely to the east (or maybe more centric) to be truly somewhat of a mirror to the airfield. Other than that it looks very nice - I love maps that are not strictly mirrored with objective placement.

again, the map is very rough, it's just an idea rather than any deep thought on balance

The whole premise of points being too distant and it becoming a walking simulator wasn't really old Basra's fault, it was more around the lack of vehicle spawns outside of the main base.

BF has 2-3 transport vehicles spawn in a forward base on average which is fine going up to 64 players, but with 250 you're just going to hit issues, that and vehicle controls are still kind of awful.

#

Battlefield style games, especially ones with as quick movement as BBR, need some distance between points otherwise it just feels like one amalgam

#

"walking sim" complaints aren't unfounded, but thats mostly from maps without usable road networks (I'm looking at you, muttholeisland)

#

Maps need to kind of tell a narrative too.

Basra would be something like "small settled atoll in the Pacific with a town and a harbor. When it became a strategic location an airstrip was added and the harbor turned into a port to facilitate a military outpost. The town was abandoned after terrorists/drunk captain ran a ship aground in the middle of the atoll causing an ecological disaster"

I personally find Objective C in the second phase of Invasion to fantastic. Naturally it's placed so far back and isolated that only a naval invasion or a transport helicopter dropoff will be enough to secure it. It's placement gives meaning to transport vehicles, coordination, reinforcements and teamwork.

placid hedge
#

Might as well say this now incase this ever gets reworked

The main issue went from “spawn camping is a problem and there’s too much action on the boat” to essentially everyone sniping on their sides of whatever points are capped and not attempting to push up because there’s no real incentive to. This is mainly due to the lack of cover and abundance of water that makes any form of positioning/movement to capture the other side more of a chore than it is to just get free hitmarkers/kills on the other side.

Combined this with it being way too large of a layout for domination (especially on 64 and 127) - for context it’s near the same size as the infyconq layout just without the helis, jeeps, and larger bases - easy to see why the current infantry servers aren’t running it.

Either the water needs to be lessened, or there needs to be more cover to encourage crossing to the other side. It makes building, fighting back, etc. a chore in a way that isn’t engaging for the attacker, and trivial for the defender

Just update old basra and make it less sniper friendly

More specifically discourage snipers from harrassing people at C point far less
