I need to backup my world for safety before adding mods, which files should I save during backup? Saving all files just takes too long (for some reason a 800mb backup took 4 hours to complete) and I wanted to be able to mess with the mods without losing my map.

You would want to backup your world's main folder. This would be called "world" unless you set the Level Name to something different on the homepage or in the server properties file.
