Hello! I'm super new to running a minecraft server and am trying to safely upgrade to the newest Java update without messing up my server configurations. I have already saved a backup just in case. When I go into the Minecraft Tools tab and then Minecraft Jar, I see the latest version of PaperMC (which is what I am running on the server). Do I just need to install the newest version and then select "Store existing files in an empty instance"? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

the empty instance creates a new instance with the new files selected and a new world
it's to m,ake swapping modpacks easier without the need to download everything and then reupload when wanting to return
Thank you for your reply! So what should I select if I just want to have the new minecraft version in my existing worlds and existing plugins?
overwrite should be an option with the option to keep the world IIRC
I do see the option to install the new JAR on top of the existing files, but it says it is not recommended
that's true for wanting to swap towards other packs but for updating it's fine
as you already figured taking a backup is a wise thing before updating though
Oh okay gotcha, yeah I'm just wanting to go from PaperMC 1.21.8 to PaperMC 1.21.10. I will go ahead with that option. Thanks!
just make sure the plugins etc are up to date and support the new version becuase you might lose features if that goes wrong
