I would like to suggest for ways to allow ships to dogfight and avoid missiles. Make the missiles more difficult to turn, so we salvage pilots can at least enjoy dogfighting in space.

I kind of wanted to suggest for a possibility to do something like that while driving up a wall.

  1. Missiles should have limited fuel, they're small and if you want them to go fast, that's a lot of fuel used up.
If you want them to maneuver then they have to go slow, part to conserve fuel but also to turn requires more fuel to stop going in the original direction.
Movie and game missiles are magic.

Real missiles travel 3000kph, or 1km per second. You should be able to see them fly towards you at the distances we use in ostranauts. Then you can easily maneuver so they miss, even with some retargeting.

Defences: point defence, obviously. Shoot them down is common. Minigun should be fine for dealing with them.

Flares or chaff, are usually not going to be too useful, the explosive range of a space missile should be big enough to hurt lots, particularly with shrapnel even if they detonate a medium distance away, and flares are short-range defences.

A sacrificial "ecm" drone missile though would be a better option, like chaff but acts as a new target for the missile and draws it far away from the ship.

And lastly, anti missile missiles. I read Peter Hamilton books where the missiles were nuclear, and the defences were nuclear missiles too. Blowd up and takes out every offensive missile coming at you in a big area of effect.

Missles should be the option for ships that flee / going somewhat straight.
